“Balance of Performance” Restrictions Coming to GT6 Quick Match Events

Gran Turismo 6

Polyphony Digital has announced some changes are coming to Gran Turismo 6 “Quick Match” events, with re-organized categories and performance adjustments.

BoP, or “Balance of Performance” restrictions will be applied to cars competing in GT3-class events, in an effort to make the racing more competitive and to make the field of cars more diverse.

First, adjustments will be made to the events made in the image of the popular GT3 category races. The tire limitation will be raised from Hard tires to Soft tires, and the application of Skid Recovery Force has also been revised, making it more controllable for both beginners and experts. Also, a Gran Turismo original racing car, the “Corvette Z06 (C6) LM Race Car” has been added to the lineup, a popular and great looking car with even greater handling.

The first BoP-restricted GT3 Quick Match event will be held at Laguna Seca in the game. The announcement confirms that additional BoP restrictions will also be coming for LMP1 and Group C car categories in the future.

Am I the only one who does not understand what heists have to do with quick match races or Gran Turismo in general?

  2. graveltrap

The wording is a little confusing, “the application of Skid Force Recovery has also been revised” means that SRF has been forced off for the GT3 event :) or it had last night…

  3. Cobra_H1

how about balancing performance for modified cars?

I’m sick and tired of my American cars all losing in the corners (understandable) and losing hard on the straights

  4. warpkez

I thought QM was no longer supported. Have not been able to connect to any of the servers for quite some time, prior to that the stability was so bad it was pointless to even try.

It was pointless to begin with thanks to the great variety of Richard Craniums.

  5. Keithdoom

I don’t know if this has been mentioned. Why doesn’t the AI adjust its gear ratio? At least for Daytona, and that huge oval thing. I wonder if they tested “Like The Wind” before release and noticed 85% of the competition falling out.

    1. Tenacious D

I think what you mean is a more sensible field of cars rather than a hodge podge of different types, and bots that race rather than give up when you get a two second lead on them for any length of time. On that, I fully agree, and have been asking for this in GT6 off and on for a while. It definitely needs to be a factor in GT7.

    2. Johnnypenso

I thought the hodgepodge of cars was a defining feature of GT, one of the things that sets it apart and makes it unique. A “more sensible field” makes it just like every other game and I thought that was what you wanted to avoid. Seems your desires for the game change from post to post as it suits your cause.

    3. Tenacious D

No, Johnny, the hodge podges didn’t start happening until GT5 and 6 with their fields of up to 16 cars, which I could give you a pass on if they’re your first exposure to Gran Turismo. But I’m pretty sure it isn’t.

Now, this board is supposedly here to celebrate and instill dialog about this series and the developer, but I have a memo for you: posts like yours aren’t doing that. So this is the last unnecessarily snarky post of yours I’m going to respond to.

Those regs won’t work. The Nissan will be far too slow and the BMW Z4 will be far too quick, and so will the Corvette. To even them out, the Nissan it needs to be the most powerful out of all of them. I have perfectly balanced these cars for my racing group and they are all within 0.7 seconds of each other at Silverstone. Looking at those BoP’s they’ll be so mismatched and it won’t be any better… They need these regs (or close to) to make it even.

    BMW M3 GT2
    -Power – 484 bhp
    -Weight – 1,245 kg

    BMW Z4 GT3
    -Power – 474 bhp
    -Weight – 1,190 kg

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 LM Race Car
    -Power – 481 bhp
    -Weight – 1,245 kg

    Mercedes-Benz SLS GT3
    -Power – 500 bhp
    -Weight – 1,350 kg

    Audi R8 LMS Ultra
    -Power – 486 bhp
    Weight – 1,250 kg

    Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3
    -Power – 542 bhp
    -Weight – 1,350 kg

Anyone is free to use these regs. They’re accurate to real life specs of these cars. Some more than others though. I can vouch that they are very even cars. Especially PD, use these regs.

I also disagree with the SRF. They shouldn’t add that to any race as it doesn’t just help slower drivers be faster, it also makes faster drivers even faster.

Do PD actually make any effort with this stuff or do they just throw some crap at a blackboard and see what sticks?

It’s a shame because the Quick Match idea is a very good one for the casual player, but it’s implemented so badly. They’ll get it right eventually though, laws of chance dictate they will.

    1. SavageEvil

Did you actually test out PD’s BoP before making a grand claim that they won’t work just because? I think it’s better to prove their way is wrong before claiming so, not preaching to you just saying.

  7. OpticZero

While they are at it, how about they fix the penalty system to discourage on-track violence. I’ve been in a bunch of competitive races during a Quick Match; however, the clean ones are few and far between.

    1. Radracing

Quick match races for two laps. How do they expect clean races when everybody is scrambling to get ahead from the very first corner and making desperate moves just to be in the top 3 in a 16 grid car race. :-(

It’s seems the 2 lap races are too short for racers to keep it clean since the only way to get to the front in two laps is to be aggressive and this leads everyone to drive dirty. Also the penalty system is flawed since getting the car behind to hit you provokes a timed penalty witch leads too brake checking and when the AI for penalty fails it leads to ghost passing the car ahead which does not give much incentive for rookie drivers try and make clean passes. I get that it’s hard to get this right and if done realisticly it would just end in a lot of DNF’s.

    2. Johnnypenso

I tried QM on one night but regardless of how good the racing is, 2 lap races just screams ARCADE. Ridiculous that 15 years into the franchise PD thinks we want 2 lap races online. They really have no clue what the fanbase wants, they are living in their own little world.

    3. o9lifted

Give us 5 laps, no or light penalty and heavy damage!

On the other hand, this QM race is a nice moneymaker lol 60-80k in 3 min!

    4. SavageEvil

Does the term Quick mean anything to folks any more? There is a reason it’s such a little amount of laps 5 Laps is rarely quick at all depending on the course length. 2 Laps is quick and no one said it would be clean, usually in long races the biggest battles happen in a final few laps with the leaders same thing here. Quick and to the point, not a long draw out enduro. You want longer races, you know exactly where to find them. PD quick races might not be for everyone but it is what a “Quick Race” literally is. Jump in for a few minutes of play that’s the idea and if you notice the “Quick Races” with SRF available is the most populated, you can wager why. So longer races wouldn’t be ideal in “Quick Race” at all, you have a separate online for that as well.
Not sure about penalties but they should add in light damage to discourage overly aggressive drivers from screwing up a relatively short race.

    5. Tenacious D

With QM races being so short, I’m hoping this is an indication that we’ll be getting an Event Maker soonish. There needs to be one in order for us to host online racing series, including championships. And I’m insistent that this be an offline single player feature as well. PD, make it so!

    6. Johnnypenso

We all know what “quick” means, but 2 laps is a joke regardless of the semantics. And “quick” doesn’t necessarily have to refer only to the length of race, it can also be the quickness of the turnaround between races, making things “quicker” by not having everyone wait around 10 minutes between races. The only shorter race is a single lap. Even a simple online survey over the past 4 years would tell PD that typical online races are 1 lap on the Nurb, 2 on LeMans, 3-5 on mid-sized tracks and often a couple more on Tsukuba. I raced in hundreds of lobbies the last 4 years and those are definitely typical stats.

  8. TomBrady

Oh great they completely ruined it.

The improvements quick match needed was voice chat, reduction of disconnections, and improvements in matchmaking not racing soft tire and SRF

If you need SRF and racing soft tires to drive these cars you should just go back to playing NFS. Unbelievable.

    1. RACECAR

Nice job on the broad sweeping generalization there. Grow the hell up, not everyone has a wheel or is that skilled.

    2. Chameleon9000

@RACECAR i agree, although i don’t like RS tires, because more often than not they make the car more difficult to drive, but oh well!

    3. HKS racer

What TomBrady really means is: “It’s not fair PD penalize decent skilled players that want to compete and have FUN with decent/realistic tyres.”

      I completely agree.

Just create different match making events for different skilled people to each his own!
GT5 Prologue had amateur lobbies and “pro” lobbies. Nobody can prevent people to play the game regardless the skill, but… BUT it’s not fair being forced using too grippy tyres and fake aids.

  9. ALB123

Can we PLEASE get a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 as well? Of course, I would gladly take the road-going Huracan, but we need the racing version as well.

  10. Radracing

Quick match races for two laps. How do they expect clean races when everybody is scrambling to get ahead from the very first corner and making desperate moves just to be in the top 3 in a 16 grid car race. :-(

  11. Blood*Specter

The C6 and C7 R Vette’s ruled FIA GT for a while. They never got any love in GT5 or GT6
Better late than never. No if PD will just fix the car category selection in the game……………
WHAT HAPPENED TO TOURING CARS? You can’t select them to race anymore. What’s up with that?

Why cant we select cars to race by the year they were made? Can you open it up for street car race selection, like by make and model and not just make?

  12. Blood*Specter

Yes, I hope this means we will start to see FIA influence. I also hope it will mean we get the remainder of the FIA GT car lineup, multiple liveries and more of the courses used in FIA GT3 series racing.

The Rolex series cars would really be nice as far as balanced racing is concerned.
Then give us Road America and Watkins Glen to roam about on.

    Let’s Roll PD!

  13. ForceMotion

Good news, i hope for more liveries or more recent GT3 cars tho to make the grid more diverse than it is now!

  14. catamount39

I like this! And they’re finally accepting that Z06 Corvette LM as a GT3!

Course would be nice if it shared sounds with the ZR1 Corvette LM racer/Carmaro TC… :P

    1. SavageEvil

All they are doing is making the cars closer to one another in performance levels, no rubber band there just leveling the playing field. SRF being on is just to allow everyone to play it, I do believe that they’ll have a professional category which disables SRF. Have you been in Quick Race at all? Regional Quick Races are usually on professional setting, only worldwide stuff has SRF.
Rubberbanding is application of boost, which I do not thing this includes at all

    2. Louie_Schumii

^ Boost is present when you go from 16th to 1st in the space of 3 laps when cars are supposedly equal in performance. Long ways to go for this game mode.

    1. graveltrap

It’s seeming to work ok so far, having fun anyway! SRF is actually forced off for this event right now :). Shame the lap count is so low, races are done and dusted in less than 3 minutes its all over far to quickly IMO, 2 more laps at leat would be welcome and still fit with the quick match concept!
