Castrol Supra Shows GT5’s Improved AI Avoidance

In one of mimaximax’s recent videos, he (attempts) to show damage on the Nissan Motul GT-R. Unfortunately, despite the fact that it’s a race car, it doesn’t show anything more than a few scratches in this old demo that he’s using. While trying to damage the car, though, he inadvertently forces an AI-controlled Castrol Supra into a last-second avoidance maneuver. For a game which has long been criticized for its artificial intelligence, this is a positive step forward. Watch for the incident shortly after 2:15 in the video below. Thanks to TorqueHappenS08 for the tip!

    @Mongo

Have you ever sit (and drive) the super GT cars? Where and how do you know the limit of them? Many factors that can make the Super GT cars doing a fast reaction like that, like the vehicle’s weight, tire grip, driver’s reactions (in this case, AI’s reactions, etc.

  2. Mongo Power

Which was kinda what I was referring to… no matter how agile is the race car, there comes the point in which a car’s behavior at the limit shows… and that quick tug left AND tug right was a bit too perfect for the speed at which it was done. Im not saying he should’ve spun out, but a bit of over aggressive input would’ve SEEN a bit more realistic. It is after all the ral driving simulator

  3. Steady_Dave_2JZ

Hate to bring this up, and I still think the AI has dramatically improved, but:

About half way through the video (roughlt about 1:10) you see the GT-R passing all the car’s for the first time as it goes the wrong way round, and you can clearly see that he crashes into the Supra (You can see it through the drivers side window)

Now we are not aware of the circumstances as to why they crashed as it could have been unavoidable, at the end of the video the GT-R is pretty much still and it avoids it, however this time around it doesn’t and has direct impact, hence why at the end of the video the Supra is so far behind.

I’m pretty much 95% sure that the crash would have been un-avoidable this time round. end of the day the GT-R is flying round the track the wrong way.

Just thought it was worth pointing out!

  4. dearlybeloved

Just watched the video again and has anyone noticed that the NIssan was steering to the left and the AI at the very last second, steered to his right. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!

    Peace out.

  5. dearlybeloved

GT’s AI is going to improve there is no doubt in my mind. This is just one example of what PD going to give us. I have seen racing in the FIA GT, GT3, and the way that castrol supra moves out at the last minute, there was just something magical about within the context of the world of gran turismo. I would rather have effort put on AI on this complexity than ‘external damage’ and if there is one I am aware of….It takes a whole lot of complex coding to get AI to behave like this.

    Peace out!

  6. Steady_Dave_2JZ

    @ mongo.

Purpose built race cars are a lot more agile than you think.

If you search on youtube you will find numerous videos showing you this!

  7. Geo_212

    @Mongo Power
For goodness’ sakes, it’s an OLD DEMO! Stop criticising something that isn’t finished, that goes for everyone. When it’s released, complain all you want, but until then, don’t be hating on PD and Sony when it isn’t even complete.

  8. Mongo Power

    @ Will
Show me a Super GT vid in which the depicted scene happens…. Slicks play a factor, but what happens on the vid is a very extreme case… see any type of circuit racing and see for yourself that such a maneuver results in a slide, never a perfect “sticked” correction

  9. viejaloca

I know I complained about not having any news and that I didn’t like the gameplay videos, but THIS is the best news I heard in a long time! that avoidence with the Supra was crazy good! Great jkob PD and yeah I no longer care about damage anymore, thaey should just put it in GT6 so that there’s always something better.

  10. Will

    Mongo –

Keep in mind that you’re watching a purpose-built race car on slick tires. A street car would most likely lose it in this situation, but I doubt a Super GT car with a rear wing big enough to play beer pong on should have much trouble avoiding contact.

  11. Mongo Power

Full speed @ a straight and it dodges like if it was going 30 miles an hour? wheres the realism in that? the car didnt even slide one bit…. try to tug your steering wheel like that at 50 and see what happens

  12. Pedz

I laugh and pity all of the retards talking about damage in this. Can you not see that they have a basic model on which they test each aspect of the game to see if it is game worthy and to check for bugs…? This will decrease the time taken to find bugs dramatically as they know its only in one build of the game, and they don’t have to go through all the damage builds, physics builds, graphics builds etc.. to get to the problem..

So stop moaning about the damage being shit, because in this build there is clearly none! It is there to show off the AI, and the AI only. Also a bloody damn good job by them for AI.

  13. dearlybeloved

No one uses rolling starts….what about the alms series or the Gran-Am series? plus I just can’t get enough of the way the AI veers out of the way! this is just perfect. it has got my hopes up for the final build of the game. If there is one thing that I am aware of, it is this, to get AI to sentient levels, it would require a massive, massive amout of processing power probably on a parrallel to the most powerful graphics engines.

    Peace out!

  14. Hernan

Funny that some people here are complaining about other talking about damage because that what mimaximax was showing and not the AI in this video, some of you guys completely missed that point, the AI evading was just a lucky pick.

  15. NoName

Music sux! I no declare a moratorium on ALL music in these vids! :)
It is a very cool video and the game is looking great! hurry KY! stop teasing us!

  16. Joylord

I’m not really phased by the AI it is nice and brilliant that PD has added this feature but it would be nice to have race features such as yellow flags and lights that indicate that you need to take precautions as there is an accident or a hazed ahead.

But then again you have idiots that like to drive the wrong way so I don’t blame PD.

  17. wiretap

Have to say, very very impressed with that! The way that Supra reacts was awesome.

    @CeeJay
Totally agree, please please please and PLEASE get rid of rolling starts. Pretty much no race series uses rolling starts other than Nascar,

on a totally separate and not even related in the slighest way to this post lol, I’ll not be playing any GT5 as my blu-ray has packed in because of the 3.21 update!

Anyone know any good sites to order blur-ray drives from?

Jordan, sorry for going off topic there.

  18. Geo_212

    @pasigiri
That’s EXACTLY why I want damage myself. If I accidentally brake late and lose control to crash into a wall, I should total my car like in DiRT 2 and have to use the flashback mode. And if I get shunted into a barrier at lower speeds, I want my engine to take damage and for my wheels to take damage as well. “Driving” simulator isn’t really what I’m looking for, I’m looking for a “racing” simulator, and if they add proper damage, this will be the best racing simulator in the history of the world. ‘Nuff said.

  19. ok

wow that AI really impressed me … its almost human like that kind of swerving when you drive towards a horrible crasher

  20. pasigiri

what song is that play in the background? I like it.

Nice!!!! I hope the AI learns from the players driving habits and uses that information to make the races much more challenging.

I really don’t care about damage. GT is a DRIVING SIMULATOR, not a CRASH SIMULATOR. If you want realistic damage so bad, consider your words carefully. Most crashes in racing ends up resulting in a long pit time or a “done for the day”. I think the people wanting “realistic” damage don’t know what they are asking for. I think what they really want is to be able to totally destroy a car and still be able to win a race like in NFS. But that’s NOT realistic, and I’m sure they would cry that the minute they see it. Include no damage and they say “it’s not a realistic racing game because there is no damage”. PD will never win this delima. But looking at GT as a DRIVING SIMULATOR and it makes more since to not need damage. Well at least that’s how I feel.

  21. ozakiito

    hey guys what about the
    TOP SECRET RACER…
i thought the magazine was out today in the uk…
    any1 bought it!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????????????????????

  22. GTracerRens

OKay, the opponents avoid you, but they still don’t overtake… I hope they do in the full game. :)

  23. Strikey182

In the news about AI yet people whinge about damage in the blatently old demo!
If the people who whinge had actually done some research they would know that Kaz has said “Right now we are adding a brand new real-time deformation engine that will process according to the speed and angle of impact.” SO THEY ARE WORKING ON IT. Be patient, they can’t just make it instantly, it takes time!

Anyway, this looks promising! The best game AI i have come across has been on GRID, everyone is pushing for the win and they all make mistakes varying from locking up to spinning to actually flipping and it made the racing truly unpredictable, if GT could get its AI to this level, it would make it the ultimate game (if somehow it wasn’t already ;) )

  24. DrTrouserPlank

This isn’t anything new, certainly not from other videos we’ve seen. The problem with GT’s AI isn’t that it won’t avoid you, it’s that it is very inconsistent or selective about when it does this. It never has, as some people suggest, stuck rigidly to it’s racing line especially in this sort of situation.

  25. Beethoven

Astonishing! That reaction was the most realistic thing I’ve seen ever, in any racing sim. And I’ve played them all. Other sims have had some collision avoidance, yes, but not to this level. A last minute swerve. Sensational!

  26. GB

Personally, i dont see that AI as being that outstanding. So the car swerves last minute. A real driver would have adjusted the line long before the last second, and thats what the AI should mimic, rather than ploughing on full speed into an oncoming car THEN swerving.

Not that i’m saying this AI isn’t better than the previous GT incarnations.

  27. RedBaron

Luke: Shutting up the complainers is better than having better AI in the game? This attitude stinks of fanboyism to me.

  28. Sam__NY

    @djcorrosive

That’s impossible as this is only a demo. Also, in replay mode it becomes split screen, which is obviously not happening in the video.

  29. FORZA_SUCKS

    E3 June 15-17 2010
ill bet my PS3 AND MY G27…
that we will know a release date at E3 2010
and it will b release this year…

  30. djcorrosive

One thing that MIGHT be the case is

This was in 2 player mode and the second player shifted away from the skyline.

    “Possibility”

Thought i hope that is not the case.

  31. azzaj

I think that as the ps3 is gpu and ram limited rather than lacking balls in the cpu department that some of that spare processing will be used for things such as ai, now if they can work out a way to use some more of that power to muck with the engine samples in real time whilst keeping the samples in ram to a minimum we might have some decent car sounds too……

Would be nice if the sound for the players car was virtual modelled. I’m sure one day they will come up with such a beast where any mod you make will change the engine note, introduce backfires on overrun and with some exhaust mods that horrible drony overrun that seems popular with some groups of people.

Saying all that id still like to play this this year so please just update it manually.

And really i’m disgusted that we can’t download those demos ourselves, we have been waiting an eternity. Even just link the download to an update of prologue and let the punters have some fun………

    We pay your wages remember.

  32. zevehcj

Why do people complain about the damage all the time? This is obviously an old build of the game. Come on guys use a little common sense next time.

  33. Fritter

That was probably better than what I could do lol
Hopefully this will mean I won’t get punted when I brake a little too early… god I hate when that happens.

  34. TOLL~Scibba~HRT

wowwwwww the graphics look amazing very good polyphony digital but one problem with the damage the GTR race car you should not be able to drive it anymore i mean hit the wall over 200km the side of the doors should be squashed, broken steel wheel will be bent the tyres should be rubbing on the guard and tyres should be smoking like hall.

  35. mantis

Loving the AI improvement, but I think EVERYONE who has owned a GT game has driven round the wrong side of the track and smacked into the oncoming opponents, for the fun of it :P Dont deny it!

  36. CanAm1968

This isnt really news per se….but it IS nice to see a tiny preview in what we can expect….once it FINALLY releases. Unfortunately, I dont think we are going to get any “real” news until June when the gaming industry meets. With Kaz saying “we can release it whenever we want” I am still perplexed why it isnt getting released soon…especially given the fact that their are thousands of people holding out on buying a ps3 until GT5 is released. With the economy what it is these days….youd think theyd want to capitalize on this game. I guess what I really wish is just some real news and some honest answers on how much progress PD has made towards the release date and what that date really is. Now its even got retailers coming up with some date so that they can take pre-orders. I wonder how many pre-orders are out there from like say….two years ago…lol

  37. scooter1265

Looks nice. Can’t wait. I want to drive a NASCAR race on Nurburgring and see the damage on that.
    That
    will
    be
    EPIC!

  38. G-Ram

I’ve been watching all these videos lately and I have to say I’ve been impressed with how the AI has behaved. I’ve seen lots of posts of people complaining about the AI, but I noticed that aside from a couple scrapes here and there, they’ve been driving well. No longer does the AI look like it’s programmed to ride a rail throughout the course… on all these videos I’ve noticed the AI all taking different lines through the corners which shows ‘independent thinking’ on their part. But this… this is just amazing! I am so psyched for this game.

  39. dearlybeloved

Oh My God! that was so cool to see. In the world of Gran Turismo that was just brilliant because the speed on that straight was upwards of 120mph and definitely a last second reaction. If this is what PD have been delaying the game for then…..this games is gonna be a monster!

    Peace out.

  40. eric

With the addition of online racing, I don’t feel an awesome AI is needed as much as it was in the earlier games.

  41. tyl0r_r

the AI’s swerve was absolutely a last second reaction, even if they were riding an adjusted line.

Really cool, and a good sign.

  42. ASparks24

Now that’s what I’m talking about! I have considered GT’s AI to be by far the absolute worst component of almost every game so far so this gives me some serious hope that it’s been much improved. I’m even more excited about GT5 now, if that’s possible :)

  43. Pedz

@Geoff. It was not a feature in GT4, but generally there will be set classes for races and most likely there will be a “supercar cup” or whatever they want to call it, with all your lambo’s and ferraris etc in it. Also it may use the same style as GT5P for arcade racing (you choose the AI level, this changes the cars they use).

  44. Geoff

Can we set the field for the AI cars we race against? Was this an option in GT4? Would be awesome to have excellent AI (I never thought GT5P was horrible but could be better) and have a race against a McLaren F1, SLR, some Ferraris, Lambos, ZR1, Viper, etc.

  45. maxpontiac

Came in expecting members to completely get off topic of the AI doing something special…

…and found some complaints about damage.

Seriously Jordan, have a MOD police this section and remove the troll-like-off-topic posts!

  46. Hernan

    The “damage” is horrible.

The AI evading was nice, i hope they keep fixing the AI, even with this is still bad as the cars doesnt race againts each other, they just drive around and the player is the one passing them. The AI is one of the areas where GT is far behind and i hope that finally change.

  47. Forenza

Oh it looks epic! For GT…that kind of AI response is just amazing. Still waiting for a release date lol

  48. Devedander

“One small step.. for man….one giant…leap…for… Polyphony Digitals artificial inteligence…”

    FTFY.

Remember awareness of on track dangers isn’t new to the racing game world, mostly it’s new to the GT world.

  49. Devedander

I want to see more examples of this and in more cases to make sure it’s the norm and not the exception, but it’s good to see and it’s about time!

Still have concerns over how the game handles normal conditions and not extreme… also of note, avoiding the head on collision was good, but the stream of cars while he was sideways seemed to not pay much head. He wasn’t directly in their way and it’s reasnoable to expect he wouldn’t just jump in front of them, but still it seemed they were awfully fast and close to a potential barrier mid track.

  50. Canadian STIG

This reminds me of the moon landing….”One small step.. for man….one giant…leap…for…artificial inteligence…”

  51. emponator

Also the Calsonic skyline chooses a different drivingline to avoid collision and it wasn’t a last second evasion. It actually seemed to see the situation from far away, and act accordingly.

  52. deadboy1975

just one word – wow! (for the avoidance driving)

hopefully the damage model we are seeing here, is an old edition.

but I really, really hope that type of AI ability makes it into the game.

I’m really looking forward to some near human races against the AI.

  53. Pedz

Yayy finally PD get the idea that their AI needs drastic improvements. Now if we can only see the start being more exciting, it’ll be perfect! (I’m talking about the fact the gap between the cars is a good 100m before the lights go.. So the last place person in a 16 player race is 1.6km away ^^).

  54. Bernd

The cars look awesome, and I really don’t need damage, as long as they include a really harsh penalty-system. Bring it on PD/SONY !!!

  55. zepheadGT3

Wow, nice reactions from the AI… maybe it might finally be possible to have some fun duels with the AI in GT5! and graphics look good as always.

  56. Luke

I hope some of the “Oh AI is still bullshit in all those game vids from a unfinished game” dudes will finally shut up.
