Gran Turismo 5 Weather, Track Editor Confirmed

Gran Turismo 5 June 21st, 2010 by Jordan

Jokes were made when our inside man, amar212, first mentioned a track editor coming to GT5 more than a year ago. Today, he gets the last laugh, as president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has confirmed “track creating and sharing”, “go-karting”, and a “weather system” is coming to the game in an interview posted directly on the official PlayStation UK website. Here’s the relevant portion of the article:

What can we look forward to when Gran Turismo 5 releases on PlayStation 3?
Gran Turismo 5 will offer gamers an experience more rich, more in-depth and more exciting than they might expect – even from a series as closely identified with innovation and invention as Gran Turismo. Not only will Gran Turismo 5 deliver an even more comprehensive set of cars and courses than gamers saw with previous iterations, it will also feature new game-enhacing graphical effects such as damage, night racing and weather.

These innovations are twinned with the option to join millions of like-minded individuals globally within the Gran Turismo community and to find a driving experience to suit, whether that is taking on the Top Gear test track, chucking cars around stunt arenas, go-karting, creating and sharing your own track or intense head-to-head races. Who, where and what to drive is completely down to the individual.

This time around Gran Turismo is likely not just to be the definitive driving experience but a definitive gaming experience full stop.

how do you guys think GT5 will stack up to RFactor and iRacing in terms of physics? with all this talk about features it seems the most important one is being over shadowed. I hope to god the physics are better than GT5TT otherwise all is lost for me. yes i can see how the cars react in the new vids but watching is not like playing it. so i guess we will just have to wait and see. GT 4ever!

It’s a simulator, so the physics will be correct to real life. (I assume)

I’m guessing KY is super pissed at this guy for putting impossible expectations in people’s heads with the vague mention of a track editor. There’s no way GT5 can live up to all the dreams this statement put in everyone’s heads. Even though I’m a natural skeptic, I still couldn’t help but think how awesome it would be to recreate parts of the PCH, or the Hana Highway in Maui.

In any case GT5 will be amazing, I’m sure PD will nail this.

i heard that we can add our own music to the game, like MLB the show, so that we can hear it on the menu and in game, but i dont quite see what you mean by music editor

This will take some time to process; quite overwhelming. Make.Believe. so the SONY saying goes.

200 premium cars never sounded more satisfying, as with the other 800 little gems(all you need is the outside of the car for photomode, expressive possibilities galore). And imagine the photomode possibilities with creating your own track!

I don’t even care about recreating a real track, leave that to PD to keep it official. All it needs to do is let us modify typography a bit, provide a wide variety of trees, customize the curbs and the rest is good puzzle pieces with some basic editing for infinite possibilities. Nothing PD can’t handle. Not to worry about AI either; ‘create AND share’, meaning only friends will be able to race on your track.

The only thing to worry about is how one could possibly commit to any one track to get their truly best time!

$5 says that if the track editor is for real, there will be people making nascar tracks that arent in the game, lol, trust me, i’m part of the community for a game called Nascar Racing 2003 season, deffinitely one of the best nascar games, way better than EA ever made, and they’ve made 1000′s of tracks, i just cant imagine what some of thoe guys could do on gt5 if its as elaborate as the one program someone made to be able to make tracks for nr2003, though i doubt it, nr2003 is a computer game, still though, i’m interested to find out about it, i just wish they’d give details and gameplay of it, that’ll happen in a month or two i bet if its real

I just really hope they have put hot hatches in the game. I know they already have a few; Focus ST, GTI, Type R.
Some SEATs and VXRs would be good? And maybe the new Audi S3?

I reckon they will have the new GOLF-R.
But oh well. Even if there isn’t, Im sure they’ll some AMGs for me to throw around the tracks. BRING ON THE C63!

mirors windos doors can break inntern extern damage

What I never really understood is where the rumours about “interior damage” came from and what does it exactly mean ?
Dashboards breaking, steering-wheels bending or what ?

    • June 23rd, 2010 at 12:31 am - #
      GasolineJunkie

The concept of “interior damage” is the reason why I believe that the statement – “Standard cars won’t have interiors” – doesn’t have anything to do with cockpit. Since the premium cars will have body panels falling off, I belive “interior” simply means behind any exterior panel. This can be under the hood, underneath the car, behind the fenders, bumpers, etc. To me, this makes much more sense than interior damage meaning dash, steering wheels, etc. like you said. This would also fit the whole reason why standard cars don’t have “interior damage” because they don’t have any panels falling off to show the “interior”

But at the end of the day, none of us KNOW for sure so we can only hope.

Nice work PD! Hopefully this proves to people that only a small % of premium cars was due to other dev time. Still wouldn’t mind all cockpit views though :P

Info is legit folks. Kaz’s latest tweets tell us he’s disappointed in this info being leaked so soon. I’m staying off this site for awhile as I want some surprises left.

Seems to depend on which translation you read. The same tweets has also been interpereted to say that kaz isn’t sure the stuff is going to be there and therefore is upset it was leaked so soon. Only time will tell.

“I didn’t promise anything about that in E3.”
“I can’t understand SCEE, why they do that.”

    MUD

    Back on the track editor,
How about an “import from Google maps” option.

    *Load up google maps,
    *Trace and outline your track.
    *Select start/finish line.
    *Click generate.

GT5 generates the track based on info from google maps,
then you just drag and drop some buildings and trees (or auto populate) and you can race around your own neighbourhood???

I think gt-forza was messing with you, MUD… I like the idea about Google Maps, but I don’t think the tech is caught up to the idea. It would be too inaccurate.

      MUD

      maybe I’m dreaming,

surely it can trace the streets and get a basic layout though? It would be much easier to recreate existing, real world tracks this way.

I reckon GT9 could have this feature when its released in 2030

    • June 22nd, 2010 at 10:37 pm - #
      wsoul

MUD: You could probably just get a basic layout, but it isn’t going to recreate the buildings and such around the roads. I don’t know, maybe I am just being pessimistic. If the tech was right, you might get something decent out of it. Nothing of track scanned quality though.

    • June 23rd, 2010 at 2:41 am - #
      Jonathon

      This would not work.

There is elevations in tracks which not be recorded.

Also, tracks are businesses. You cannot legally re-create them without their permission.

You can model stuff all you want, but you can’t sell it for profit, or in some cases distribute it at all, depending on the media used. Many vehicles, places, and such get modeled for MS flight sim, and by and large nobody cares has long has its given away free. Heck, some of it gets sold for profit without anyone caring either.
