GT5 Signature Edition Competition: B-Spec Mode Only

Those of you who paid more than $200 for the Signature Edition of GT5 are probably eager to learn more about the exclusive competition you’re eligible to compete in (it’s still in stock at Amazon, GamePlay, and, of course, eBay). Other than this notice posted on Polyphony Digital’s website, there hasn’t been much said about the most expensive version of the game. What was said, however, was critically important.

In case you missed it, the Signature Edition competition – which could land you a real-life Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG – will be held entirely within GT5’s B-Spec mode. Yes, that’s correct: your chance to land a €177,310 super car will rest almost entirely on the virtual driver you’ve hopefully been training over the past several weeks. If not, you’d best start now to get an edge on the competition, which will be kicking off sometime before the end of the month. Stay tuned for all the details as they are released.

Thanks to all who sent this in!

Win the car. Sell SLS AMG in AUD for $400k, move to U.S. buy a Viper SRT-10 ACR, Nissan GT-R and SLS AMG with $380k USD…

  2. mc959

Thx Sony, i’m from Belgium and bought the SE 180€ but offcourse we can not participate to this competition. didn’t receive the card in the wallet.

Why???? i would love to know that…

  3. kekke2000

I understand PDs decision. They want to show off the new B-spec mode and want people to manage a racing team. It does not follow my opinion but thats how it is…

  4. XTRGT

Cool my B-Spec driver have LV.23 almost 24 and he has an Accurancy and Strenght almost on the max and he’s really fast driver for a B-Spec.

  5. Jump_Ace

Ouch, I didn’t know it was up to the B-spec drivers. I would wish you guys good luck, but now it’s just random as I’m sure most guys will have a driver level of at least 35 if not 40 for the comp. Who has the winning lottery ticket?

  6. Nato_777

To be honest if I had known that the comp was going to be B-Spec I might have bought it. I know from GT Academy that I’m good but not good enough to win an A-Spec comp, but with B-Spec I’m in with more of a chance. If you presevere with B-Spec your driver gets better and responds well to your commands. You learn when to push them and when to ease off to get the best out of their driving. However, I can certainly see why those who did buy the SE version would feel ripped off as there were expecting a time trial or some form of A-Spec racing.

    1. Lars

You could also get all “conspiracy theory” as well and point out that Bob’s performance or other AI performance vs. Bob could be manipulated remotely.

  7. neb

Wow, I feel ripped off hearing this, and I didn’t even get the signature edition. Hope the guys that did get the SE can deal with it, because that sure is a f-up in advertising. If they made that clear from the start, I don’t think SE would sell nearly as many copies.

  8. Michael

Who the hell even plays B-Spec mode. Most boring, useless game mode ever. Oh let’s sit and watch a screen for 20 minutes, and then do it again..and again….and again.

    1. LFNY

I play B-spec while browsing the internet or roaming the GTP marketplace. Its actually pretty cool if your are into that sort of thing.

    2. Apollo

LMAO. So, B-spec is “pretty cool” if you’re into doing something you actually like while your PS3 runs in the background? You sold that pretty well.

    3. Nato_777

Yeah, I mostly only ‘play’ B-Spec when I’m busy doing other stuff and then the only real reason I’m delevoping B-Spec drivers is for the endurance races where you need a team. It’s more of a chore than anything else unfortunately. I think it could be developed into a more interesting mode if it had more options, better & more varied commands and online racing with other peoples Bob’s.

    4. AGTFan

@ Nato: I sometimes ‘play’ it when I like to have a beer and watch some racing. But actually I might as well watch a real race.
The REAL reason people are playing Bspec is this comp. Most people with a life don’t have the time to level up their bob. I hope some fat 13yr old wins. That would show what kind of farce this competition is.

    1. Abu

Yeah, pretty critical detail to “forget”. Makes one wonder what else they “forgot” to mention. Perhaps you don’t get to keep the SLS, just touch it from the outside, before a Sony exec drives away in it..

  9. ralph89

You guys are complaining for a chance to win a supercar? Gt planet is getting riduculous with all this complains raining down like no tomorrow. Imo using B spec is just right for this expensive competition, I mean, let’s be honest. Would you rather win by punting everyone out of the track and get that super car like taking candy from a kid or play it fare and square to get it? If you picked the first choice, you’re an a hole for sure. So please stfu and let everyone who bought the sig edition get a chance to win. This is just not all about you, but it’s everyone who bought it.

    1. Stibbz

Hi, ralph, this place is known worldwide for it’s whingers/whiners & moaners lmao, it’s nothing new, goes with the territory lol

    2. Devedander

      Misrepresent the sutuation much?

Whining at a chance to win a car? How about legitimately shocked considering they PAID to have this chance to win the car.

    3. DOUQA

When an ‘In game competition’ was announced I assumed that it would be a TT not the horrificaly tedious B-Spec mode. The fact that you have to do b-spec to win certain cars is a joke and this…..

And if the only 2 options you can see are:

      A. Punting people off the track
      or
      B. B-spec mode

then what does that say about the way you drive?

    4. occasionalracer

You can be sure that the final contestants moves would have been watched like hawk for any foul play, whether shortcutting or diving into the inside of a turn and forcing that person wide. Same rules as GT Academy should have been applied, but instead we get to watch what the CPU dreams up to be real racing. Not cool at all…

  10. Topsu

I almost hope someone will lose their SLS because some horrible mistake/stupid move the awful AI in this game might make.

  11. tyl0r_r

PD continues their tradition of bizarre and nonsensical choices in relation to all things Gran Turismo 5. So dumb.

  12. Stune

I’m thoroughly disappointed with this. I was looking forward to an exciting competition with with an intense final and many close races.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about the fact that someone who quite probably has low levels or skill in the game is going to win a car worth more than £100,000 based on a AI driver which got lucky. If we wanted to do gambling, cansinos or horseracing might be a better option. This competition was the main reason i purchased the sig edition as well :(

  13. Owen.C

I read about this last week and couldn’t be bothered to do B-Spec. I’m just going to wait until B-Spec can be done online, I can’t enter the competition anyway.

  14. Billy

it’s not fair , i want try to join the competition but i just buy the collector edition because i can’t found the signature edition in my country

  15. Reaperman

So once again it would have paid to assume the worst from PD–and then have gone back and strained to imagine even worse. Jeez.

  16. JB

I have just sent an email to Sony Australia as I was one of the dumb ones that did by the SE edition how ever this information about the competition was not post up until after the game had been released.
Very, very misleading Sony! I think that most people as I was had the understanding that if you payed $300 that you went in the draw to win ?
Yes Lotto odds, but if you did win nice. I would not have purchased the SE if I had been told before the release that it was going to be based on B spec, there is still next to no details about this competition and how it will run.

They have on;y had 5-6 years and 3-4 failed released dates to work it all out ?

    1. Kingchesh

      @jb
Mate I brought the signature edition just for the comp because I done well on gt academy. I was expecting a time trial , and was a bit pissed to find out about b spec mode . But if you start levelling up your drivers you start to get into this mode. You got better odds than the lotto then , but I can see why you are annoyed

    2. JB

Spoke to Sony today and they said there stance is that it was marketed as a competition not a chance to win or a draw. I asked where I could find the terms and condition for this competition as stated on the website aug the 4 that they will be released shortly and he said they are still not available as the competition has not started, well that makes it okay to mislead people than. Reported to the ACCC.
I should have known better then to trust Sony when they say it will be released shortly……does that mean 5 or 6 years.

  17. GTP_Rotang007

This is actually a very very fair way to do this. Think about it, Only a handful of people are good, Majority of them will come from this site I am sure.
But in B-spec its a complete level playing field. I think that is the best way to do a Competition for such an amazing prize. I am wishing I had of bought it now.

    1. An1mal_69

      Too right..what a crock.

I’d guess you can’t use your current driver, you’ll have to start with a new one for the comp as it would be unfair for someone who bought a SE the day before the comp opens.

Still pants tho..might eBay my voucher

  18. GMW

My B-spec Bob is starting to drive like a Pro! He pulled some amazing driving this weekend with a tuned up Cobra! He messed up somewhere in the middle when he overcooked the corner but managed to fight his way back up to the top with a spectacular final overtaking maneuver on the very last corner before the final stretch. I actually enjoyed watching that race as I kept giving him instructions and realized sometimes I need to tell him to slow down once he is in the lead till his mood calms down a bit.

However, since I never bought the signature version so I’m not in it.

I’ve got to say, I’m enjoying GT5 the most of all GTs so far!!!

  19. madaz75

    God dammit..
My B-Spec J.Kawasaki while a quick driver.. Lacks the ‘nerve’ to work in a crowd.
Back up driver M.Martin, he’s well… Let’s just say he’s still got training wheels.

    1. Brandon

This made me LoL. Great wording man.

I wish I could be in the comp. My B-Spec driver is actually pretty damn kickass.

  20. KilzoneStrife

I bet their going to make it endurance races all through until the finals. Then 24hr endurance, nurburgring, weather , day/night.

  21. Paul Mc

Jordan is there any more information relating to the prize. Surely Mercedes are not going to hand over an SLS to someone who cannot afford insurance/tax or somewhere to store the car. I have the signature edition but I’m not bothering to enter.

    1. JohnAndBuddy

Hey Paul Mc, if your not entering could i have your code to enter then. i would love a chance to get my hands on that amazing vehicle. and i like the idea of having it b-spec mode only also. please let me have it if yor not gona use it. thanks

  22. G

well it does kind of make the winner more random, and I guess it means the winner will be someone who is truely dedicated to GT5, I mean you could be a good driver on any game, but only when youre truely into GT5 will you have a good Bspec driver… its genius, only the truely dedicated fans get to win it.

    1. ExtremeGT5

What? No… only the people who have no life are sitting there all day long watching someone drive a car. Only the AFC(away from controller) people can win.

  23. paytonlow

B-Spec…you god to kidding me, are they really serious?!

Anyhow, I’m just passing through as I don’t have the SE version.

Good luck with those who bought SE version, and you guys better read those posts about B-Spec and get leveling as fast as possible.

  24. twinspark24

Haha, this would be nice. The only chance for my Bob to win is to give him a car with at least 200bhp more than competirors’
    With equal cars…there won’t be a single overtake :D

  25. MaruchanSoup

MY CHANCE OF WINNING RESTS ON THE HANDS OF BOB?!

Well.. here’s hoping i have the smartest Bob of the bunch

    1. jacoja06

I’m actually really glad about this. If it were up to my driving skills, I’d have no chance at all.

My driver, ‘X.Wang’ will need to start training. He is currently level 1. :(

    2. PaTrond

      I don’t trust him either…

Well. Seems it is a bit like The Stig Farm Top Gear is doing. I think I’ve finally found a smart one! xD
      …But he’s named S. Ferrari, so Mercedes won’t like him. = (

    3. hempy

ill win it with P.Gay, my B-spec driver ive power leveled him. get your lvl 22 in one of the 2 driver races and watch the huge xp go to the little guy.

    1. Jordan

It’s a pre-release mock-up published on the official GT site and doesn’t represent the menu implemented in the final version of the game.

    2. INSTG8R

Yep I really like the look of that B-Spec screen. Alot more useful in my opinion. Wonder why they went and changed it?

    3. LFNY

      @INSTG8R

Alot of the information is the same, besides the 2D horizontal view (which is redundant)

Biggest difference is we have full screen, which is much more useful than than having the 2D view

    4. blaaah

      @LFNY
The screen is different with different information and functions. GT5 doesn’t show any tyre information or wear indicators in the timing screen, and it doesn’t have those 3 option buttons above the heat meter.

    1. occasionalracer

Maybe the rest of the units will sell now cause a lot of people knew their skill is not quite good enough to get to the top. It’s a little disappointing though, it would have been nice to see that car going to a really good driver and maybe C-class for 2nd and 3rd.

    2. VEYRON STANDARD? WTF

they might as well hold a raffle. b spec is cool for when you have other stuff to do and want to win cars and money but it isn’t exactly the most engaging thing. usually you have to use a car at least twice as fast as the rest just to get the stupid driver to make passes. he’s a timid little bastard

    3. Lsasqwach

Of course that’s normal for your bspec to be in 8th on the 2nd to last lap. Wish my drivers had atleast some sense of reality.

    4. Lsasqwach

Of course that’s normal for your bspec to be in 8th on the 2nd to last lap. Wish my drivers had atleast some sense of reality. Whoever starts in first is going to win…..
