Sony Demos Gran Turismo 5 on 4K TV with SimulView at CES

Gran Turismo 5 January 10th, 2013 by Jordan

The annual Consumer Electronics Show is in full swing in Las Vegas this week, and Sony is using Gran Turismo 5 to show off the capabilities of their upcoming $24,999 84” 4K Ultra HD TV.

As if running at 4K resolution, or 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, wasn’t enough, the system is also taking advantage of the game’s “SimulView” feature, which lets two different players look at the screen simultaneously while seeing a different image.

This now marks the third time a Gran Turismo game has been shown running at 4K resolution; the first being back in 2008, and the second being just a few months ago in Japan.

Im more impressived with the curved OLED 4k HD screen, now that would be great for a cockpit and the projectors than can shot a picture a few feet away to upto 80″. There were plenty of 3D tvs there but l focus was on the unoffical 4k theme which is like looking through a window.

Most of you guys don’t realise that 4K TV’s are the future.
HDTV’s have been around since the late 80′s and were commercially sold in 1998; that’s nearly as old as DVD’s. Prices of those HDTV’s in 1998 were the same price as this TV, with everyone was saying the same thing they are now “No way anyone will buy a TV for £20,000″
It takes time for the prices to drop, every new piece of technology has to start sometime, like it or not.

Now, if there was a way to link 2 PS3s and 2 copies of GT5 to the same TV… (drools at the possibility of full 1080p and AA.)

This demo though, interesting. Like the the R8/SLS hybrid shown.

Very interesting to see in what PDis maturing its next project. 4K output, with a brand new multiplayer mode thanks to the simulview. With the announcement of the new Playstation due this year, it’s very likely the next GT will be a launch title for this next system. Hopefully they’ll be on time for the next launch window. With such attempts, it seems Kaz has learned from the GT5 launch failure (delayed too many times), and is polishing it’s next title. Well, that’s how I think it’ll be. Pure speculation here.

I don’t need this. I need all standard cars converted into premium cars and new premium cars plus TC cars also all cars used on Nurburgring 24h races.

Even if the price was lowered, I still wouldn’t get it. I don’t see a point in owning one, I think the flat screens that I have are perfectly fine. Its just a flashy toy with stickers that have “WOW OMG WTF BBQ” printed on them and are attached via duct tape. Almost like SR3.

They’ve made it so that when you’re playing couch multiplayer each player has equal screen space. Kind of handy if you’ve got a PlayStation/regular Sony TV with SimulView and a friend comes over and wants to play. Granted, you could just use split-screen, but it would be harder to see.

Now really which one of you that you are saying “i better buy a car” really believes that Sony with this product …and actually not just Sony but every and any other company that releases “exotic” ultra-expensive products…. (e.x. Pagani, Bang & Olufsen, Vacheron, Hermes etc etc ) targets You/Me the average Joe as customer?
and on the other hand….. “i better buy a car/house/space shuttle”……aaand? your point is? and who cares? Sony,Hermes, Pagani etc dont care for sure.

-Also have in mind that all companies (especially the ones that are in the tech business) “have and must” release various extreme things not just to show off for marketing purposes and that they are at the top of the game, but also to push R&D department.

i´m totaly with you. But just think, who of us thought 10 to 15 years ago we would have a 50 inch flatscreen on our walls. Back at those days they also sold them for that kind of money.
So in 10 years to come…
I´ll be sitting in my racingseat in front of a 84 inch tv(or bigger) playing GT6.
I´m looking forward to that :)

People have short memories. Remember when HDTV’s were thousands of dollars? Now they are hundereds. If this new technology has any merit the same thing will happen. As for the 84″ TV, do you expect them to show off this new technology at CES on a 40″ TV? Give Sony credit for trying something new. I think the bigger story at CES is the demise of 3-D. Alot of people wasted alot of money (with the help of the manufactures) on TV’s with very little content. Beta anyone? Like I said “people have short memories”.

Everybody, please calm down! I know that the price for this TV is outrageous, but new gadgets ALWAYS cost more when first introduced, and then prices come down as mass production kicks in and demand decreases. 25 grand is a lot for a TV, but consider the fact that if you bought one, you’d be one of the very, very few on planet earth to own one. Rare things tend to cost more, but as I said, in a few years prices WILL come down just as they did with HD and 3D TVs.

I, for one, commend Sony for introducing this next-gen TV technology. And the Gran Turismo series being the magnificent product that it is, is an excellent way to showcase this new super HD TV.

25 grand and we can see the ghost image?

the ghost image is because simulview is running, if you were there and wearing the 3d glasses you would not see it.

      Still not acceptable @ $25,000

      KFM

This has nothing to do with acceptability, SimulView is showing two images, and each set of 3D glasses will filter out one of the images. That’s like saying it’s unacceptable that a 3D TV shows two different images when you take a picture of it.

This is sort of a “halo” product at the moment. Companies sometimes release these to show how cutting-edge their technology is as well as to put more pressure on their R&D departments to come out with new technologies faster. Trust me, in five years, this TV will be on sale at Walmart for $500.

Better of buy a car then a TV for that price, Stupid Sony

the person who is going to buy that Tv has a $200000 car, so the tv is not the equivalent of a car to that person

I can see the benefits of SimulView but I just hate the idea of having to wear glasses to watch TV or play video games.

4K resolution sounds like a feast for the eyes, though.

I could buy a used BMW for that. And still have some spare change for something else.

…I’m okay with my old 2006 32 inch Sony.

Why in the world would anyone want such a large TV? Isn’t 30″ enough? I mean, an 84″ Television isn’t very practical at all, imagine playing an SD PS1 game on that. Pixelville anyone?

Also, for 25k I could buy roughly 845 copies of GT5 at an average price of $30 a copy.

100”+ TV’s have been in the market for some years now,, why not a 4K 82”?

      2012GT325

1st, the price for this TV will come down as soon as mass production kicks in. 2nd, 30″ TV is very small in today’s world. I play GT5 in my 55 inch HDTV and I will be upgrading to a 65-70 inch TV next year or so. Not only have prices come down on big TVs, but there’s just nothing like playing games/movies on a big screen.

P.S. When I used to manage a movie theater, I once connected a PS3 to the cinema’s projector and played games on the really, really big screen. That’s an experience I will never forget.

Im sure the difference is minimal considering the textures are the same. That TV is more of a novelty imo…. a very expensive one.
