Video of Gran Turismo 5’s Online Spectator Mode

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB1UyZAV1Vo

This clip’s been making the rounds over the weekend, and for good reason – it shows what appears to be GT5’s online “spectator mode” which allows you to watch an online race in progress. It’s actually video from one of the GT Academy 2010 National Finals, where a special networked demo version of the game was used to pit finalists against each other. The segment you see above was actually buried in this YouTube clip posted in February, and was subsequently overlooked until it was edited and re-posted by our own CoolColJ last Friday.

Take a look at more screenshot’s of the game’s online race menus here in these screenshots.

Never mind the spectator mode (as good as the feature is) the race its self was very entertaining to watch. :)

On another note its interesting to see peoples comments about slipstreaming in the game. In reality there are quite a few different factors that determine the effectiveness of it. I wont bore people with the science, but something like an F1 car is far greater effected than say a typical American muscle car, the maths however theoretically shouldn’t be too difficult to work out mathematically. What is odd is that many games tend to have the effect of slipstream a bit out of proportion one way or another. Without knowing the exact stats of the cars here its difficult to see just how far off GT5 was in that demo. There may have even been some other leader handicap system in place to make the races closer (like the slow car boost in the old GT games) I guess the only way to know for sure is to wait till the full game comes out and we will have our answer.

  2. sr20detblacktopdrift

I can’t wait for the online drift battles. 1 vs 1 and the whole team is counting on you to perform…don’t mess up! There will be some awesome replays in the near future.

  3. David

Jesus, why the hell cant people buy tripods, they cost like 20 bucks! Even when I have filmed things by hand its NEVER shaky, make an effort!

  4. KopparbergDave (PSN, add me for GT5! :)

Loving the feedback from Loxstokk, I LOVED the subtle depth and realism the GT Academy Demo physics had, I’m very relieved to know the finished game is sticking with that (in Pro mode).

Looking forward to this, though as Mitsifumi-San was saying, the slipstreaming is a bit over the top in the GT games and I hope it’s something they address, as is the fact that in GT you always seem to be faster than any AI opponents in the same car. I seriously hope the computer AI is improved, but I’m looking forward to decent and fair online racing (please add me on PSN anyone wanting fair racing!) which should make the quality of the AI a non-issue.

  5. pS3GUY

this game is shaping up to be the best game, wait, by looking at the demos, im pretty sure it already is

  6. Johan

I wonder what we will see at gamecon and Tokyo game show?? maybe about karting?? or maybe trackbuilding-thing??

  7. I want an Esprit S4

I hope there is a good telemetry system implemented in gt5. I really like knowing where i’m losing time in different sectors of a track. Maybe they could also allow players to compare telemetry data if they wanted to.

  8. Grant U. Rismo

What they really need now is a decent livery editor to compliment this. This way when people join in they can immediately know what racing league they are watching just by seeing the decals on the cars.

  9. Kanji

So, are those GT decals on the side of the car part of the actual paint scheme or is it perhaps something one could apply on the car in the rumored customization mode? I’d assume it’s the former, but it’s just a crude black cube and doesn’t look like any sort of sponsored vehicle or any real reason for it to be there other than if it was applied.

Maybe I’m thinking about this too much, ’cause I really want there to be a customization feature.

    1. funrun

Those were the logos for GT Academy during the February Finals created by PD for this competition. I wouldn’t consider that any hint towards the customization features, although I hope there will be some sort of customizing feature.

  10. Slick

Man it’s going to be so cool watching others race :). I just hope there’s not any major lagging, or idiot drivers.

I’ve just got back from the beta rooms event in Birmingham. Played gt5 in 3D. The 3G effect was very subtle on the example I saw. The physics were excellent. There was beginner, intermediate and pro. Pro seemed v similar to gt academy demo. Extremely difficult on the narrow roads of the nurburgring. Intermidate was a great compromise of difficulty and feel. Beginner was similar to prologue standard. Graphics were excellent but we already know this. Toscana was beautiful, especially to day to night transitions and the way the headlights pick up different sign posts etc. Handling was slippy as you’d expect, nothing unusual for a rally racing game. There were however variations in the road surface, going from sand up gravel to some harder stuff ( not quite Tarmac). Damage was a lot more dramatic than I’ve seen on previous videos circling the web. Saw some people mash their cars up pretty good. Polyphony can now say they have the best damage physics on a console driving sim. Didn’t notice anydamage affecting the car handling. Thing that most impressed me? Probably the feel given by the new physics. Probably the best I’ve experienced from a driving game. Pretty close to real driving, and that is a massive complement. Spoke to a Sony guy about a uk release date, he said the “20th of November or around there”. Sorry if my writing is poor, I’m typing this on my phone.

    1. Micdog

That’s great feedback, thanks alot dude :D
Love the way that surface varition sounds, looking good for November. Can’t wait

  12. hellseek

If u look closely its has: Save Replay with purple pink O
maybe spectator mode may be the same. Watch the raw video Jordan posted a link to up top.

  13. 3-2-1_contact

I hope that in the Spectator Mode you can change camera view just like in Replay Mode. Now that would be sweet!

    1. Magic Ayrton

It would be SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! Let’s hope we get some info from that Birmingham event real soon now.

    1. Magic Ayrton

Why wouldn’t you want to spectate?? Not to mention for Marshalling reasons, but you could set up a track days for mates etc.. and while you take a break you could watch how your friends drive.. not to mention countless other ideas you could come up with… it adds diversity.. also you can monitor their laptimes..

  14. ElieTheBear

wooooOOowW first gran turismo 5(gt academy contest) video with GOOD drivers (some best gran turismo players of the world) all theese demos should be tested by theese talented people lol .. ! I like the blue one … losing speed in the track but always there behind others in the straight last line to take advantage of air resistance lol .. ! he is fats but must lose speed in one particular part that others dont do !! so kool to watch a close race like this !

  15. dood

What’s the point of watching in the stands? Dude youre in a video game have a good camera shot everytime. this ain’t the sims.

  16. Paulo

I can’t stress enough how amazingly well PD delivers replays. Camera angles are so perfect and well thought out, not to mention that angles are different for 3 laps before they repeat. It just makes you want to watch replays all the time.

  17. Prancing_Horse

Now that’s what I call good driving. There’s no way in hell online racing is gonna be like that in GT5. It’s gonna be full of rear-ender idiots and t-bone a-holes

    1. Crispy

You should join in with some of our GTP race events, on Prologue. Alot of our races are like that…fast, clean and competitive!

  18. Louie_Schumii

Nice to see the blue car give the white one a “corrective” nudge (instead of a race ending one) at 3’37 in the video.

    1. idlestation

ah just went back to see that part, its pretty cool, and I like how quickly they both got it under control.

  19. mitsifumi-san

    Hi!! Fan – GT,

First I tell it this game and ALL SIM I am love. This presentation is of good!! The concern I have are grave.

The effect of SLIPSTREAM is becoming the ridiculous time. It is of the value too much!!! An anger is feeling.

I am doing and saying in the way of realistic physic of SLIPSTREAM. This cannot! A real is your subtlety time.

Tell me – is your anger also also felt in SLIPSTREAM effect?

    Regers,
    Mitsi -_-

    1. danielwhite74

I think what he’s saying is that the effects of slipstreaming are too strong. This problem has plagued the Gran Turismo series for years. In Gran Turismo 4, you could gain over ten miles per hour by slipstreaming another vehicle.

    2. Bernd

Well, the slipstream is the same for everyone in the game (except the leading car of course). Watched F1 today, slipstream is indeed a big advantage. But I don’t know, how much mph or km/h you can gain in RL, maybe 5 ?

    3. Ha

It’s pretty easy to translate guys, be a little more tolerant!
It does effect everyone the same but that is no excuse for a poorly implemented feature! The main problem with the exaggerated slipstream is that it will ruin any chance of NASCAR being interesting. This is something that will annoy a lot of fans of GT and will also do NASCAR a great disservice.

  20. Mr Latte

Its having nice community features like this that will help make the game really good online. I like the idea of things like “sector times” and “total laptimes” being displayed which the TT previous screenshots showed.

Lets hope such replays can indeed be saved and even edited if so we can expect to see some fantastic race edits on sites like You Tube.

    Heres a question:
We know videos can be uploaded to Youtube so is a video editor tool unlikely? I wonder if they will also allow the user to add in a music track from the PS3 HDD to their video?

Well within the next month we should now a lot more….

  21. Hentis

Some great driving going on there. I not e in the video that you can save the replay. Now I wonder if this can be saved as well for “classic” online matches?
Really looking forward to this and cant wait till Gamescon in 18 days time :)

  22. mink

looks like a tv braodcast of a pay-tv service to me.

i can chose which car to follow and stuff. That ! i Like :)

  23. zdenko

    LOL
Just so you know, this is actually from the Australian GT Acedemy Finals which I was in. Very old footage from way back in February.
I actually recognised it at first from the drinks in front of the T.V. as one of them was mine.
Don’t expect this to be a final realease as it was quite buggy.
And just so you know how it worked, one PS3 was setup for the “Spectator Mode”. This had a net connection to PSN. It aslo hosted the other machines, which there were 4 of. These 4 communicated to each other on the LAN.

  24. Ferrari

    Nice!

but when they said Spectator Mode I was kinda thinking you could watch it from the stands :P

but this is still awesome nevertheless

  25. sidsid118

it is always strange watching a replay like that of a video game and not see an overtaking move consist of a full speed rear ender, or a t-bone. there has to be some serious anti-idiot penalties when the game is released, and i dont mean private games either!

on topic, that replay mode or spectator mode will really pay off on the endurance races, someone can watch and be ready to jump in when needed.

    1. P37Mac

Yeah that was very entertaining and close racing, especialy on the corner at the end of the burn/straight.

  26. G-Ram

This is awesome to be able to watch live racing ALL THE TIME… since Speed channel is pretty much useless these days.

I am 98% certain that my PS3 will never be turned off ever. If I’m not racing then I’m gonna have a live race on to watch whenever I am cleaning or working on something other than playing.

    1. context

I was actually thinking of something pretty similar when there was that video of a Lexus ISF that had the real life lap time transferred into GT5. My idea was to get a F1 race, Le Mans, or whatever and use the same computers and have the information uploaded in real time into gran turismo so you could either watch or race their ghosts even. I doubt this would ever happen but it would be really cool to go in every car or follow the exact car you want to follow instead of having the camera guy on somebody who doesn’t matter.

  27. context

I remember commenting about this exact thing and posting the times of when it actually started when this video was released and posted on this website back in February.

    1. context

Haha I was looking through my post on the forum and couldn’t find it I thought I was about to look really stupid. I need to remember new page comments are separate from forum comments.

  28. GT VIRUS

This feature just got introduced over on iRacing, and it’s fantastic fun to watch racers, particually lower level crash feasts :P

    1. Ha

Well they certainly didn’t copy GT…
Besides the iRacing implementation is much better than this looks, you can free roam the camera all over the track, allowing you to ‘sit’ exactly where you would in real life when you go to a track!

    1. Eggman

Oooh oooh…your first…well done, I wish more than anything in the world that I could be first to post a comment. Shame you can’t spell ‘first’, or ‘yes’ for that matter!! …FAIL…!!

    2. boohamdan

      Take it easy guys..
The desire for the first place is in all of us GT fans, some ,however, take it to the next level :P

    3. tvensky

LOL, you NOW GOT 45,OOO credits for 1st place, with Professional physics on GTplanet.com! Yor time is (-2:00). Congratulations! :)

    4. Team_MoFF-No2

Lets just say, that you were the first, to make a stupid reply.. I’m probably No2 LOL.. Stop it!! great video Thanks Jordan, you lovely News man… hehe No I’m already married, but he is Cool, and he is doing us all a big huge help, we don’t need to spend hours on the net, to find some small or big News on GT5, he provides if there is something to show, with a big help from all us.. Uhhh look Cake :O)

    5. GT'ireland

fantastic news, your first! Thats really made me experience joy-joy feelings in all those around me,who cares

    6. Nato_777

It’s nice to have your name at the top of the list, but I’ll try to save that for the GT5 online rankings lists.
