Ferrari 312 P Available In Forza 6

FM6-1971-Ferrari-2-Ferrari-Automobili-312-P

Earlier today, Turn 10 shared an interesting image on the company’s Facebook page. The car featured in the Forza 6 Photomode shot is the 1971 Ferrari 312 P, an endurance racer that was last seen in Forza Motorsport 5. Naturally, this stirred up some questions. With the January Car Pack just released, where did the Ferrari fit in? Would other missing FM5 cars return? And, possibly the most important: how could players get their hands on it?

Community Manager Brian Ekberg cleared up two of those questions in a video stream on Twitch a few hours later. The #2 Ferrari Automobili 312 P (to give its full name) will be gifted out to players that compete in the Can-Am Connection weekly League series. Not all players, however: only the top half of finishing racers at the end of each week, in each division, will receive the car. Yes, this makes it possible to own numerous copies.

This marks the return of a contentious Forza series feature: Unicorns. Last seen in the XBox 360 era, unicorns were hard-to-win cars that typically required some sort of community involvement from the player. These could include: taking part in races against T10 members; beating certain celebrity rival times; winning official Photomode competitions; etc. While this rewards persistent players, others found the limited access frustrating.

While this is the only way for FM6 players to access the new car this month, Ekberg did mention that things can and will change in the future. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Absolutely hate unicorns, but it’s not hard to get top 50%. Few hours of full rooms can bet you a lot of points even finishing mid pack.

Who dreams up these Dumber than Dumb promotions..
We are Drivers. All we want to do is driver the cars.
either release them in a manner so that they can be driven by all of the game owners, or don’t release them at all.

      @Northstar

It worked and it was nice back then because those games were offline only. I could win the special car from events whenever I felt like or whenever I had the time to get around and do it.

Now if I can’t keep myself on top 50% because I don’t have enough time to play for whatever the reason or if I just can’t pull out a good score because I’m not competitive enough to keep up with online players (I know is easy to reach 50% for you or me, but it really isn’t for everyone) then too bad, no Ferrari for me.

Or even if I only get around to buy the game next year, again too bad, the car will likely never be obtainable again.

What I’m trying to say is that it worked in GT1-4 because there was no time schedules or other real players involved, it was really just you and the game, and you could make things on the time you felt like or the time you had available.

I agree that the GT system was better, I was merely stating that “unicorn” type cars have existed in GT in the past.

I don’t like this way to give contents…
If you make it available to all people that partecipate to the online series and if you just give to the best ones a special livery each race (every race of the series 1 livery so in a 5 races series you give out the car to everyone who partecipates and 5 different special liveries) you can everyone who enters the car and the best ones that can drive it with style…
Something similar to GT Academy that you grant the cars to each one that enters the series…
In this way you will make happy all your fan base and not alienate them (knowing i am not the fastest driver i would never ever enter this series but instead sell out my copy and buy another racing game)…
    I find less offensive a paid DLC…

Great to see more le mans car in the racing games, especially from the `70s. But i dont like this system to gain them. Project cars have done very well (all avalible, to everybody). You have already buyed the game, so why you cant play wiht them? I ve suffering this from the GT series long ago.

It would be better to randomly distribute it to 50% of the players who compete in the series, rather than the top half. That would give everyone an equal chance to obtain it, and it wouldn’t alienate those who doesn’t have enough skill to be in the top. In fact, that way you could probably lower the “drop rate” to to 25% or something like that and keep players participating in these competitions for a longer period of time.

It also wouldn’t encourage players to cheat or drive dirty to get the reward.

    1. Kyle P.

From my experience, those that drive dirty in the leagues are penalized for it. I’d have to check exactly how the points are handed out, but yeah, contacts and dirty laps do hurt totals.

I can see doing this sort of thing with a cool livery or something, but to hold back a car, especially an iconic one like this, and give it only to the fastest players? Going to be a lot of disappointed casual Forza fans pretty soon. Hopefully it’s only early access and it becomes generally available after a brief period of time.

    1. RodolphoPNeto

Oh there will be, for sure. Fans get disappointed about everything… i thought the unicorn cars were incredible, and the challenges were fantastic, although incredibly simple and easy (imo). But people always complained. It’s too hard, the car sucks, this is outrageous and i refuse to do it, and so on… i feel like fans are becoming more and more annoying and convinced that if it’s not exactly the way they think it’s good, it’s disappointing, like you put it… i can only imagine the pressure for the next GT lol

    2. SavageEvil

Actually unicorn cars were annoying, some of them were so annoying like the M3 GTR, online rooms turned into M3 only rooms. Seems like in Forza 6 the Ferrari 712LM is the new M3, I see that car on the grid at least 3 of them, pretty sure I’ve been in more rooms and race with them than not.
There is such a thing as limited time, and if I bought a game with cars and paid for all the cars. I should not have to spend oodles of time to get cars. I say make it a livery or something I can live without. The car itself is worth more to me than a livery. GT did something like this but in GT you can still buy the car if you cannot win it. Options are a good thing, especially when you are pressed for time and want to spend your time having fun racing and not trying to get high enough to make it into a rank where you may or may not reach to get a car you paid for that should be made available in more than one way. It’s a tad unfair, as all the other cars are free to purchase if you have the money, why have one car you can’t acquire the way you did the 99%?

    3. RodolphoPNeto

@SavageEvil – Thank you for making my point. So unicorns are annoying because there are a lot of them on the grid, and it’s ALSO unfair that you can’t buy them like the rest. Wow.

    4. SavageEvil

@RodolphoPNeto You’re missing the point, Unicorn cars some of them were literally too good so they were always in the grid because of the abilities, like the NSX-R and M3 GTR. Thank goodness Forza 6 has a much bigger grid and the M3 GTR is no longer the beast, that honor belongs to Ferrari BB 712LM( I think that’s it designation) either way they are spam now, because it’s stats are pretty good and it fits into S class nicely.

Speaking of fans getting disappointed, what part of I paid for all the cars including the car packs didn’t you get? I should be able to purchase the car sooner or later. I have no problems with having it as a gift, but if that’s the only way to get it then of course I have every right to be upset. I paid for content but at the same time the bar to receive the content is different. How is that fair. I’m not saying I’m not a good driver perish the thought but this is for folks who bought a game and want to experience it how they wish. Forza 6 all cars are unlocked from the get go, only bar is credits which to me is fair. Special races, placing in a certain strata of racers to get said car makes this unfair. So I hope I cleared up the misunderstanding for you :)! Cheers.

Being a student and having multiple consoles and little time, it can get daunting and upsetting that I have to devote more time to placing high enough to receive a car which I should also be able to purchase. GT does it much better, you can go the race way or you can buy it, your choice but you get the car and are able to drive it at your leisure. Challenges are for those who wish to take them, forcing everyone to do them isn’t what you would call a good fair trade.

Also this adds to the whole elitism junk that pervades online gaming when folks who are better at certain games and love to lord it over others.

    5. RodolphoPNeto

@SavageEvil, they’re just prize cars available to everyone since these TTs are rather easy after a few tries, and that’s it. You’re over analyzing it. I just can’t understand someone being so upset and frustrated over this, we’re very different people. And that’s fine :) Cheers.

    6. ImaRobot

they are only going to be available to 50% of the players, per event. Everyone can enter, but not everyone wins.

    7. ImaRobot

      Triple post, sorry.

Its a grid of 24, that you’ll also need xbox live to take part in it. That’ll suck for those who don’t have live, or even have a stable connection for online gaming. Here’s to hoping they make it more readily available in the future.

    8. Kyle P.

@SavageEvil – Strictly speaking, you (and I, and every FM6 player) didn’t pay for this car, so it’s not owed to us. Back in the 360 games, I’ll admit I found the concept of Unicorns frustrating, since they were on the disc, and usually required out-of-game actions by the player to earn them. I was able to score all of them in FM4 though, and over half in FH1, just by taking part in the Rivals events (and racing against the devs once).

It’s sort of like the unique prizes that existed in racing games years ago. GT3/4 had cars you could only win in races (and GT5, but really only the special X2010). Of course, that was in the days of offline-only, so you weren’t reliant on other players lack of skill to win the cars. This seems like a gift to the hardcore players, as they’ll be the ones with XBL, taking part in Leagues, and doing well enough in them.

As mentioned though, it does create an imbalance, as some players will just not be able to access the car no matter what they do. I can understand the argument from either side, and it’ll be interesting to see what happens to the 312 P after this month’s exclusivity.

  7. Samus

I’ve never liked the idea of exclusive/Unicorn cars in these games unless they’re just a special variation of a model otherwise freely available. That obviously isn’t the case here, which is a shame. Why spend time and money modelling a unique car and then restrict who can use it by something other than $?

    1. Akira AC

Low flux in online player-base, or to make use of an already existing Unicorn model to be fitted into FM6 rewards system.

I personally like it, it’s an actual reward that you can get from a challenge which involves skill rather than … money. Based on a ranking system will force people to get online and practice more to be more competitive.

    2. SavageEvil

@Akira AC, all this is going to do is increase the amount of unscrupulous driving, even in league races you can still drive clean and when the chance arises can pull dirty moves on others if need be. Here we go with the elitism nonsense all over again. Sigh!
