And if you take out the corporate tickets that are given to the event's various sponsor employees and relatives, I'm betting there's actually even less people than we think at these events.

That was quite a good article!

What do you think about a push-to-pass button for NASCAR? Maybe they could get flames to shoot out of the roof when it was pushed?
Passing isn't the problem, passing the leader has been the problem. If you look at the stats there was a lot of passing last year, the two problems being that there wasn't much passing the leader and that TV doesn't typically cover much of it, only focusing on the leader

Well then make the leader's spoiler go down an inch or so. Somehow they need more fireworks.

Another idea is three heats with a grid inversion after the 1st heat.

We'll see how it goes from here on out since they're not at Daytona. There were 42 lead changes on Sunday between 18 drivers, and I think that was a record for lead changes at Daytona. Previous was somewhere around 29 I think.

Who is "we"?
Australians. Last year V8 Supercars had a race format where they raced for sixty kilometres before a half-time break of fifteen minutes for repairs and servicing, and then the final sixty kilometres of the race began with a rolling start.

We also used to have a qualifying format for an endurance race where all the regular drivers qualified the car, and then all of the guest drivers qualified. The regular drivers raced one another for non-championship points, as did the guest drivers. These non-championship points were then added together to decide the grid for the main race.

Fortunately, both systems have been dropped.

The only other available date for the Grand Prix clashed with a major college football game in Austin, and it was felt that the city's tourism infrastructure would not be able to handle it.

If Formula 1 loses audiences to NASCAR - and if NASCAR loses audiences to Formula 1 - then they are just going to have to bite the bullet.

The record for lead changes at Daytona was 74 in the 2011 Daytona 500. As for the rest of the season, you just have to read the NASCAR 2013 thread to get my opinion on how it will turn out.

I got the records mixed up then. My mistake. That's what I get for half listening to FOX commentary while doing other things that night.

My favorite lolFOX moment (outside of FOX News reporting that Jimmie Johnson won his 2nd straight Daytona 500 and 3rd overall after the replay ended) was that Danica finished 8th in her "only Daytona 500 start".
Well, to be fair, it was her only Daytona start where she wasn't in a wreck before she got through the tri-oval. Also only Daytona 500 start where FOX didn't cover her walking into the portajohn after Montoya destroyed turn 3.

To a huge surprise, the 18 car does not have M&Ms but instead Skittles this week.

Also, love the paint scheme on Matt's car (except for that hideous yellow fade on the back).

Really? are they both owned by Mars?

Yep, both are owned by Mars Incorporated. Its a surprise to me because Mars has traditionally been more aggressive on their advertising for both of their chocolate brands (Snickers and M&Ms respectfully).

Meanwhile, Knockout qualifying is about to begin. This is going to be the most interesting Cup qualifying session in quite sometime.

I can't remember the last time I watched qualifying outside of the Daytona 500.

Edit: Fox really needs to add a countdown to the display.

TV coverage is horrible, first round just ended on TV but in reality we're in the middle of 2nd round right now. That's why they didn't have a clock.
