Do you write stories?

I'd say I'd write, but barring the Hajime Racers mini-chapters I don't really write anything serious. I did have an idea for a short novel about immortality and reincarnation through science.

That could actually be interesting. I usually have ideas of stories about true meanings and try to challenge normal human thoughts.

Trying write a Walking Dead spin off but the ideas are overwhelming that i don't know how to put them in the story.

Trying write a Walking Dead spin off but the ideas are overwhelming that i don't know how to put them in the story.
I usually find it best to choose ideas to be cut from the Story, store it a sort of Idea bank and then use them later on a different project.

I have at the moment 30 Character ideas, and currently only using 7.

I'm going to break up the idea here into smaller parts so it isn't scrambled.
THOUGHTS?

===
Time frame and backstory

The story idea takes place somewhere between 2150 and 2170.
So, somewhere in between 2044 and 2048, there was a reactor meltdown in New England, and the following explosion wiped out most of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A group of scientists that went along the rescue teams had discovered that some survivors had somehow been made younger by ten or even twenty years, based on their proximity to the epicenter of the accident. Upon further investigation, they discovered a new super-heavy element (atomic weight estimated to be over 200).

===
The new element

What they discovered was remarkable. This new element was a stable atom with similar reactive properties to oxygen. It seemed to be able to bond with any atom or molecule without damaging the original molecule structure or function, DNA in particular. Analyzing the survivors revealed that they were exposed to doses of 100 to 200 milligrams of the element, and that these small dosages reversed their physical ages equal to the dose size (100 = 10 years, 200 = 20 years, etc.) by rolling back the centromeres that caused aging. However, the survivors had no recollection of what happened in those ten years of their past.

This provided critical information on how to use the element, and immortality and reincarnation were unlocked by humanity on December 14, 2065.

===
The immortality and reincarnation

The scientists unlocked these two long-desired traits through the new element. They started production of a 100 mg pill of the element that guaranteed another ten years of life at the cost of your memories of the past ten years of your life. This could be worked around by making a very detailed log of those years before taking the pill. If a person did not desire immortality in one body, they could opt for reincarnation. A small capsule with the element was implanted in the base of the brain, and recorded everything the person experienced. Upon death, the capsule would be removed and then implanted in a newborn infant. It would be activated after the first year of the infant's life, which would completely snuff out the existence of the infant and replace it with the person who desired to be reborn.

===
Consequence

Every person and their mother wanted the pills and capsules. The initial prices were utterly high, so only the rich could get either of them. It would lead up to a society where the rich were immortal and the poor suffered. The poor just wanted the pills so they could roll back their bodies or their children's bodies to prevent fatal disorders from killing them (the pill rolls back disorders and diseases too), and the greedy rich use it to live forever and make more money off the poor.

===
Story premise

The idea I initially had here was a small rebel group a la Robin Hood that stole supply trucks full of the pills and distribute them. Several of the rebels had the reincarnation capsules implanted, so it becomes a situation where the rebels have to decide if they want to die normally or be reborn to see the results of their sacrifices, etc.

The idea of the novel is to ask "If you could obtain immortality and reincarnation at any cost, is it really worth it?"

I made my first eBook sale yesterday! Someone on Amazon bought my first-ever book of any kind. Being able to have people check out my material makes me happy. Even more so when someone purchases your work. This is what most publishers who offer their work for sale want- support for your work.

More importantly to this discussion, because I am working on more content for my eBook series, the next one is a bit easier because I have found a template (or something like a template) I can work with based on previous material. Usually in sports, people say when you win one major event or one championship, winning again is easy. The reason is because now know what it takes to execute in a given situation. So I have made a good bit of gain working on another installment of my eBook series "Proof Positive." It seems easier for me now making a second installment because I am using most of the same text from the previous text file I created to use in the second. But of course, I am focusing on a different topic.

The use of a basic template also helps me to make other eBooks on other material now that I am comfortable with what I used to make the first eBook. I want to make other material. And still as of now, I am focusing mostly on nonfiction work. I won't test the waters of fiction or novels any time soon. Though it is outside of my character, part of me may want to challenge making something in adult-level literature. In other words, something in the adult content realm. But again- I am focusing on mostly nonfiction work.

[UPDATE] In case you're interested, you can learn more about my "Proof Positive" work by taking a look at this blog post of mine: http://johnscreativespace.blogspot.com/2015/12/proof-positive.html .

Nice work so far. While the moral dilemma is not new and will remain as an undertone, the scenario calls for plotting, action, and character fleshing-out. You can do it; don't think of the final objective - of money or fame (even if you churn out a best-seller ready for publishing right away) - what matters is you hold the finished product in your hand.
Then it all starts with that first reader - whether friend, agent, or submissions editor.
I'll be looking forward to reading that story one day. ;)

Congrats, @JohnBM01 - you've proved that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. 👍

Recently, I found out how to make templates for LibreOffice. I made a template so I could make future installments of my eBook series a bit easier. I may make other templates for other eBook projects I may work on. I am still working on the second installment of my eBook series. Once it is released, my eBook series I am working on will legitimately be a series.

My status as an author is I am a self-published independent (or "indie") author. I still use Kindle Direct Publishing and Draft2Digital to try to get my work published online.

My second-ever eBook went live on Thursday, December 18, 2015. It continued my self-help series called "Proof Positive"; and because it is in the same series, the self-help material is now a legit series by virtue of making another installment within the series. I was able to get a good leap into this second installment because I had pre-typed a lot of what I initially had planned for the eBook before seriously overhauling it with much more content. When I was done with it, I found it had many more words than the first installment I made for my series. There were about 14K words in my first eBook, and my second eBook was nearing 20K words (19,803 to be exact)! I put in a lot of effort talking about as many different things as possible. Amazon Kindle estimated my second eBook as being 79 pages long. My previous eBook was noted being 50 pages long.

So by making this second eBook and having my work as part of a series, I feel even more accomplished than when I made just my first eBook. I can keep working on my material and keep trying to enhance my material. I am still considering making other eBooks on other topics. Only thing is that I haven't gotten around to those other topics.

So are you publishing a series of books? Looks more like you're publishing and selling separately individual chapters. At three dollars a pop.

I don't have the full patience to combine everything into one large book. And I also felt like making my work into a series. I have some topics planned that I would prefer be in their own separate installment in the series. This is my first real books of any kind, so I am still learning a lot as I go along. I am already working on my third installment of the series.

[UPDATE] The length of the material I've made for Amazon are what are considered as "Kindle Singles." These are works of 5K to 30K words between about $2.99 USD and $9.99 USD. This range is most suitable for me. I just don't have the patience or skill for making a properly long book. I still prefer my current work to be in individual installments.

As soon as you get paid for anything you write writing is then your profession - or at least one of them. Sure, you can mend shoes for a living, too, but that would only make you a professional writer who also repairs shoes.
Making a million bucks doesn't make one more of a writer than the guy who was paid $10.00 to draft a resume - it just makes the former more of a financially successful writer.
I would like to ask you, though, do you ever work with an editor?
Unless one has had some very lengthy journalistic training, writers tend to make mistakes - if only a dropped comma. We're not talking a submissions editor but just someone with enough linguistic savvy to point out slips in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and so on - and will help you 'polish' what you write.
Professional editors will actually charge a fee (obviously :) ) but that depending on the length of your work.
Quite often the credibility of an unedited writer is undermined because of a dropped word or careless construction.

Depends what you are writing, and where, of course.
Here, in this forum, we tend to write rather more casually to prevent stilted or too formal discussion, and we make many slips and they are glossed over, but if you are writing a piece that is attacking a very serious subject then the expressiveness calls for a different presentation.

The How-to-for-Dummies series was a great example in breaking the mold (when it came to serious instruction) but the structure of the language used and the presentation of ideas professional enough to be taken seriously.

Also - a million copies sold begins with that first sale. Competition is fierce not because the competition is fierce - but because there is so much out there not everybody gets to see everything right away. Patience - and keep going. 👍

Okay, writers - final quiz for the year - what is the OEDs Word of the Year?

Actually . . . that's a trick question.

http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2015/11/word-of-the-year-2015-emoji/

Well, damn you, Google. There's no ignorance left with you around.

The other 'legal' words (yup, 'they' is now popularly legitimate again in that context):

ad blocker, noun: A piece of software designed to prevent advertisements from appearing on a web page.

Brexit, noun: A term for the potential or hypothetical departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union, from British + exit.

Dark Web, noun: The part of the World Wide Web that is only accessible by means of special software, allowing users and website operators to remain anonymous or untraceable.

on fleek, adjectival phrase: Extremely good, attractive, or stylish.

lumbersexual, noun: A young urban man who cultivates an appearance and style of dress (typified by a beard and check shirt) suggestive of a rugged outdoor lifestyle.

refugee, noun: A person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.

sharing economy, noun: An economic system in which assets or services are shared between private individuals, either for free or for a fee, typically by means of the Internet.

they (singular), pronoun: Used to refer to a person of unspecified sex.

I would like to ask you, though, do you ever work with an editor?

Yes- myself (meaning I have none). I usually try to work with as few resources as possible, simply because I usually can't afford certain things. I seen that some editors can charge for prices starting at about maybe as much as a video game. Part of me has always been the "if you want it done right, do it yourself" type. Since I am doing a self-help deal with my eBooks (but have plans to create material outside of self-help), I feel it is very important to make as few mistakes as possible while also being as professional as possible. That's why I've paced my material the way I have online. I feel there is a certain value to my work though I am currently a relative unknown for the most part.

Only ones who know of me are probably those who follow my blogs, YouTube channel, or somehow found my Weebly site. Other than that, I am a relative unknown to a lot of people. So I don't get as much people following my work. I still unfortunately have only one sale of my material. But again... I'm just starting basically.

'On fleek' is in the dictionary now? What a time to be alive.

Some interesting words in there - as well as old ones with some contemporary tweaking. Recognise any?
I had to edit at least one word out.
Taking into consideration that every word here stands for a particular concept, then learning some of these words will give writers of English all over the world additional fodder for thought and detailed pictures for imagination.

More here if anyone wants to dive in deeper:

^Uh, Antiky-bluh what?

I've been lazy about my novel idea. :lol: I'll do a little blurb if you fellow writers want to see it.

Hmmm...That list. There's seem to be a rise of "Filipino words" on the net lately. Maybe because of social media.

If I had that many Filipinos around me IRL I would actually have some food around. Music, too. :)

How about banished words? And banished phrases?

Words getting hate: 'So', 'Vape', and 'Manspreading.'
Phrases that are 'frowned upon'? 'Secret sauce', 'Break the Internet' and a few others.

Manspreading?

MANSPREADING
A word that is familiar to those in bigger cities, where seats on the bus or subway are sometimes difficult to find.

“Men don't need another disgusting-sounding word thrown into the vocabulary to describe something they do…You're just taking too much room on this train seat, be a little more polite...” – Carrie Hansen, Caledonia, Mich.

“The term itself is stupid, and the campaign and petition written by men's rights activists claiming that men need to take up more space due to their anatomy, and that anti-manspreading campaigns are ‘male-bashing,’ are ridiculous. The problem is with people taking up too much space on the subway or any public mode of transportation. – Beth, Anchorage, Alaska

Better learn what not to use if you want to practise freedom of speech effectively. :lol:

Edit: I just edited out a 'so'. :D

I actually want to try an original story instead, think it would be more beneficial. Though I've taking several inspirations (primarily Anime) for the story. This is my premise of the story:

Several years after our own timeline when a nuclear war breaks out, most of the northern hemisphere is wiped clean from human existence, with the Southern Hemisphere barely surviving. Fast track a few years and civilization starts to rebuild itself with a massive Peace Treaty and support for all the Southern Countries as the Northern Countries are barely habitable due to all the nuclear radiation, new beasts start to form there making it impossible for human life to go back. However, it was rumored that 8 special artefacts have been discovered forming from Rocks by the radiation in the Northern Country areas by explorers who went to explore the Northern Countries anyway despite the warnings. However it is only a rumor since the only thing that came back from their exploration was a piece of paper in a bag.

The Southern Countries start to form one empire blaming multiple leaders on the War that occurred with their base of operations happening in Australia. It worked well with the ruler being My Lady Emery as she treated her people fairly and had a lot of honour in the lands, however it changed when she gave birth to Quadruplets (all males). She started to created priorities putting her four children over the other people so much that she decided to build 4 smaller kingdoms for her children to someday rule, this wasn't taken kindly by the citizens but since they had no power over her, she went on a crusade on anyone who was against her and destroyed towns and locations deemed unworthy or undeserving for her children to rule over and inflicted rules to try to garner respect for her children and killed anyone who didn't garner does rules, this started a rebellion army with their small base in South Africa but the number of people was enough to start a conflict between the 2 parties calling in the break of another war.

Despite being Quadruplets they all had different views on life and personalities and were eventually separated because of it which ruined Emery's plans in the process. Kian was very loyal to Emery and wanted to everything in his power to help her so he became head general of the current army until the rebellion would be destroyed where he would be a king. Bennett wanted to impress Emery a lot but was deemed to weak to be a king so Emery kicked him out from being "her son" reducing the future kingdoms to 3. This caused Bennett to go through a lot of mental issues until he discovered the rebellion, he took charge of it after serious training and proving himself after the fails before hand but his mental issues still remain on his mind and now wants to kill his mother out of revenge alone and has no consideration for what the rebellion truly stands for. Dominic displayed a rebellious side ever since he was born, he refused to do a lot of the higher up customs and just wanted to focus on enjoying himself and nothing to care about, though still wished that both sides remained equal deep down in his heart, at the age of 5, Dominic's rebellious side got to much for Emery so she decided to kill him but his father stopped her and sent Dominic away to the Northern Hemisphere where he'll be more safer with the beasts than with Emery, the father was executed after this act. Theo was originally someone who always had an interest in what others said and wish for a life where everyone can just be themselves and express who their are without worries, after Dominic's sent off, Emery though the same would happen to Theo so he took him to a horrific concentration camp custom designed for him until Theo was traumatized so badly that he lost all of who he was, he became and emotionless robot who only knew how to kill and would only obey Kian and Emery out of fear due to the traumatizing experience he had.

So that is the summary I want to work with, though a question is which one of the quadruplets should I go with as the MC, or maybe I should go with all 4 with each telling their sides of the story

or maybe I should go with all 4 with each telling their sides of the story

...I've been trying to write a tale with multiple protagonists but believe you me, it is a lot more trickier than it sounds. One of the earliest issues I've run into, was to create believable environments for all these characters and their subsequent development in their personalities without them all sounding copy pasted.

I've been thinking about writing each story threads individually and then bring them together at some point, so I've mapped out the general plot lines in order to do just that - but then it became such a monster I had to put the whole thing in the back burner.

Not sure how someone like, say, GRRM does it, but wish I knew the trick...

I'm thinking more of the lines of having each Chapter focus on a different character depending on who has the spotlight in the timeline (for example Chapter 1, could be Dominic at the Northern Hemisphere while Chapter 2 would be about Kian's role in the army and what he has to do next) and if it needs to feature more than 1 of the protagonist then, the one with the biggest role gets the POV role for that chapter.

An early idea of how I would play this out:

Sharing POV would have to start early though for Kian, Theo and Bennett due to their locations which mean their stories start off with tension, showing off the dangers of the Southern Hemisphere has become while Dominics story would start off more laid back and more informational about life in the Northern Hemipsher, the beasts that live there as well as the 8 mysterious artefacts. Eventually the stories will separate with Bennett learning the life of the Rebellion and knowing what the fight truly means. Theo goes to the Northern Hemisphere to track down the artefacts that were now officially hinted due to Dominic's actions, which shows a more observant side with weirded out monologue showing his traumatize state and eventually encounters Dominic, which will be Dominic's first experience of his past life since he was force to leave and tries to cope with what is happening especially when back in the days, Theo was the only person who could relate and be with Dominic and his rebellious attitude but also he has concern for his new life that he now has. Kian would probably continue hunting down rebellious civilians and eventually gets obsessed with Power, turning into his mother and goes against her and kills her, becoming the new ruler and becomes the man behind the strings of Theo and the army.

I ain't saying it'll be easy, it will be a challenge but I am willing to take that challenge and try it :P

Finally, finally I might get around to finishing a short. I've sat down and gone through some basic plot points and structure and churned out a few chapter.

Before when I was writing I could get really into it but stalled towards the end never really knowing how to finish. This time I think I've nailed it but don't want to be over confident.

I'm going to keep it as many words as it needs to be. I don't want to fluff it up to make it longer and I don't want it to be too bare so that it's dull but I'm feeling it'll be quite a bit shorter than I'm hoping.

I do not write many stories, although I occasionally think of a scenario in my head that would seem to be a good book.

I do like to write these things (I do not know what to call them) that I would hope to be in a textbook of literature someday though. You know, those ideas you think about through the day out of random sometimes. They make you feel intelligent. And maybe you (as the writer) are the only one who understands it? Here is one I just thought of today:

My heart is broken upon the fall of something spoken - like girrafes and horses, and silence.

I'm going to break up the idea here into smaller parts so it isn't scrambled.
THOUGHTS?

===

===

===

===

===

This is genius. I wonder how much you could sell this idea for to major companies producing TV Shows. No, seriously. This is genius. More a movie instead of a TV Show though. I would totally read a book like this though. And I do not read a lot of books.. :bowdown:

It has been two months since I released my first two eBooks. I haven't made anything really since. I am a one-man creative studio. Often times, I go from trying to author books to make music or art or whatever. I haven't given up on the story front, though. I may eventually return to try to make more stories or some other literary material.

I would rather not let this go to the high end producers - as crazy as that sounds - because I want it to be my own original work.

Edit: Do any of you wanna give me a hand with composing this? I'm suddenly feeling way over my head on this.
