Wasn't initially planning to do tonight's Nations race, considering how much of a minefield Tokyo Expressway is. However, I eventually decided to bite the bullet after finding competitive pace in practice lobbies and time trials.
Entered with the Hyundai, which in addition to its straight-line speed turns out to feel exceptionally quick through high speed curves. Qualifying was my best so far this season - managed to set a lap good enough for 2nd on the grid, and would've been even faster if it weren't for traffic at the end of the third sector. Other than that, a relatively incident-free session from my end.
For the race, I went for a one-stop strategy with two sets of Mediums. Like at Bathurst, my intention was to conserve as much fuel as possible to jump others during pitstops, and to put in extra (in the end almost two laps' worth) to get some fast pace on the straights in the second half. Having initially conceded 2nd on the run to Turn 1, I was promptly rammed into the wall by a rapidly-approaching Mazda, picking up damage to the front and rear. This, combined with faster pace from my competitors, resulted in me dropping down to 6th by the time I came in for my stop.
Progress in the second half was limited, not least due to a combination of non-stoppers, limited overtaking opportunities and a few tiny errors of my own. Eventually, I ended up in a battle for 8th between another Mazda and one of the Group C Nissans; on the last lap, I managed to draw alongside said Nissan upon getting a strong run out of the final hairpin. While I lost the straight-line battle, both of us passed a slow-moving Mazda as we entered the tunnel, gifting me 9th place and a respectable score of 1016 points.
Overall, out of the races I've had at this particular variant of Tokyo Expressway, this had to be one of the tamest. Even with the Turn 1 incident, I did not receive a single penalty, and my steady decline throughout the race itself was tempered by a few clean passes and battles. While I wasn't able to make the most of the Hyundai's pace in the same way I did in qualifying - or indeed, as much as the polesitter - it felt much better to drive with motion controls than the left stick, and I look forward to using it more often with this set-up. To top it off, after the race I received an apology from the Mazda driver who punted me on the first lap. After watching my own recording of the race, it turned out that he had tried to make up several places going into Turn 1, and appeared to have completely misjudged his braking point in doing so...
Still, six top-10s from seven starts... I'm on a roll!
