Now it's likely that Kim Jong Un will replace him. Not sure if he'll end up being a mad as father though.

The reports claim he has had plans as ludicrous as his father should he ever take over. The country will, unfortunately, remain under the same rule & hardly anything will change.

Maaaaaaaaatt Daaaaaaamon!

I'm not sure if this is good news or not, for all we know his son might be even more of a mad hatter than he was :scared:

That's what I originally assumed. I can't imagine change coming to the North any time soon, which is shame.

And yes, that song needed to be posted

**** him. It's too bad nothing will change. Castro stepped down, nothing changed. Saddam gets killed, nothing changed. This guy dies, nothing's gonna change.

Kim Jong Il is dead at 69.

In some ways, no news is good news when it comes to North Korea. Despite Kim Jong Il's efforts, I'm not sure that the transition plan to his successor will be "smooth" at all. If a power struggle ensues, there could be huge unstable regional implications.

What power struggle? It's already well known one of his sons will take over the country & they're all as nutty as their father was.

That is assuming things are stable enough for that to happen. There has been a decent amount of discussion about how his sons will handle it, plus the current global political climate has been changing.

I think it will be quite interesting to see what happens next.

Good riddance to an evil man. I hope that someone will seize this opportunity and bring down the regime once and for all.

I just hope they can get to a peaceful unification with the south. Those poor North Koreans deserve it.

CHOCO PIE FOR EVERYONE!

Fair point, but according to reports just late last year, Il apparently confirmed that his son, Kim Jong-Un would become the successor, as he was his father's "favorite".

That's not to say that is what will happen, but in a country where the family has remained in control for several, several years, it may be the likely outcome.

As nutty as he was, he is human, and any human deserves to rest in peace. It disgusts me when people celebrate the death of a human being, no matter what the person had done. It happened with Usama, and i'm hoping the same doesn't occur now with Il.

Seriously? The man wasn't as terrible as Usama, but I doubt there are any South Koreans who are feeling like you do right now.

Wow, I really wasn't expecting to hear this getting home from work.

Unite Korea shirts/stickers will blow up. Just wait. RIP.

Well, 2 things may happen-
A. His successor starts a war
or
B. He cools his jets, and North Korea stops being an issue

The passing of him means that communism is finally dead! Long live freedom and democracy! GOODBYE COMMUNISM! HELLO DEMOCRACY!
Actually, it's more than likely that he will be succeeded by his son, Kim Jong-un. Who is believed to be equally despotic.

I'm hoping you're being sarcastic... North Korea and communism are long from dead.

Apparently Kim Jong-il had a -38 handicap and once sank eleven hole-in-ones in a single game. Big loss for the golfing world.

What about C. None of the above.

To be honest I don't see how the nuclear threat from NK is still an issue to the US, since the biggest threat for the US is the overwhelming Chinese economy.

If something, I think that Kim Jong-Un will have more closed tides to the Chinese, and I hope he can bring some stability in the region by "heating down" the situation between the south and north.

I'd say war is unlikely. Kim Jong-un or whoever succeeds as leader of North Korea will likely make all the necessary noises to satisfy the hardliners, but they would also know that open warfare the minute they take over will only end badly for them. What few countries are willing to tolerate them now would only turn against them, and the North would be crushed like a bug. This could still happen if someone gets the idea that Kim Jong-il did not die of natural causes, but was instead assassinated. He's been dead for a little over 48 hours now, and we're only just beginning to hear about it (by contrast, we knew Qaddafi was dead within 48 minutes of him beng shot). The North Koreans have a reputation for secrecy, so they're obviously only telling us what they want us to know.

'‎State television announcer weeps while announcing Kim's death' - What. The. Hell. We're meant to feel sorry for these people who suffered under his rule, and yet one of their number goes and sheds tears for a psychopathic loser. She should be partying (I know I would be if our Federal 'leader' kicked the bucket).

Well, if you're not counting the continuing operation of the DPRK, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, and to a much-lesser extent China... Sure, Communism is on a slippery slope. All of that being said, Communism serves as a political ideology that is not completely independent of democratic ideals, regardless of what you may have learned in secondary school.

The big news is that, well, we don't really know what's going to happen. The news that Japan and S. Korea have been placed on alert is not entirely surprising, given that the likelihood that the military has taken over in the DPRK is quite high. China will be the major deciding factor, presumably, in what happens in the near-future.

Its the best opportunity of moving forward with reunification in more than a decade. We can only hope that it is a possibility.
