Oh dear! Luckily you didn't break anything - a mate of mine was not so lucky last year and was gimped over the whole Xmas period after going A over T in the snow.

I've just received an e-mail here at work advising that staff are allowed to leave work early if necessary. Nuts to living within walking distance of work! :ouch:

edit: The snow has been so bad here that the University where I work are making rooms available in student halls for staff who are stranded and unable to get home!

It's -10C here right now. When will this freezing fog dissipate? It's been around for three days now. Also, i'm lucky that I didn't slip on the ice outside my house yesterday.

The ice was terrible here too, esp. on Friday. I almost went A over T about three times - once out on the balcony at work, 8 storeys up :scared:

The snow here is beautiful, but very badly timed... the last time it snowed this heavily, it was pretty much overnight and hence people woke up to it, and were able to either stay at home or go to work without the car. This morning, it only really started snowing properly at about 9 am, and so now there will be a whole lot of people stuck at work instead of being stuck at home... And, the snow is as heavy as it was the last time, but this time it is falling on already icy surfaces... yay for living within walking distance of work!

Too me just over 3 hrs to walk 12 miles home from work :( but on the plus side i was able to take a short cut and walk down the middle of a 3 lane motorway which looked like this.

the council don't have any money to pay the gritter drivers over time so they aren't going out and work phoned to say don't bother coming in :D.

^ Do you have a total for how much snow you've received so far, because my brain can't comprehend shutting everything down with what it looks like you have.

Foggy and 1°F/-17°C

Aren't winter tyres compulsory in the US? Hardly anyone buys winter tyres in the UK.

We are not in the slightest prepared for any snow, the trains will die as soon as there's a cm of snow around.

well there was the slight issue of 1/4 of an inch of ice all over the roads too.

Yes but it's the wrong kind of snow for the trains

It's not surprising winter tyres aren't popular in the UK when our transport minister said this in the House of Commons "Winter tyres wear out very quickly on normal road surfaces and cause significant damage to those surfaces, so they would not be appropriate in the UK situation"

It hit -11°C last night, and Glasgow is forecast for -11 to -14°C tonight... the snow varies from place to place, but some places have had between 2-3 ft of snow in the space of one week (very unusual for the central belt). The big issue yesterday was not just the speed and amount of snow - it was the location and the timing too. It hit the central belt and the major arteries of the highway system (M8, M80) after rush hour had started, and making it nigh on impossible to treat the roads because the roads were too busy. Gridlock ensued, and hence it became a nightmare. Bear in mind that the snow fell on ground that was already covered in a layer of ice in most places, due to a thaw followed by a refreeze, resulting in sheet ice everywhere... now, after a fresh dumping of snow and a severe freeze last night, we have 3-4 inches of solid ice on the pavements in the city centre :scared:

On the contrary my dear fellow people have learned from last year.
My mum's boyfriend works in a garage and he was saying that by about October some sizes of snow tires were completely sold out. Even from the suppliers...
And as for the trains I think it mentioned on the news that they were managing to clear 2-3 tones of snow from the underside of the trains.

Add in the factor of a jackknifed lorry blocking the M8 and then another one closing the A71 (I think) it just equals pure chaos for people trying to get home from work last night.
It took my mum and her boyfriend 1 hour to do a 15 minute journey due to the lack of motorway and the sheet ice on the smaller roads.
Yesterday there were reports of 4 hour tailbacks on the M8 as well.
People were just getting out their cars and having a walk around on the motorway....
So yeah, one could say that it is fairly bad

Wow the British are frankly rubbish in the snow. How in the hell did your country conquer half the world if you can't even make it through some snow ?

This is purely in jest for those with a serious face on.

Think about it Joey....
The British Empire only really had hot places:
Australia, India, large chunks of Africa, somewhere in South America and some of the USA.
With the exception of Canada, all these place are fairly warm.
We didn't dare go near Russia because it is cold...
I'm pretty sure that's the reason anyway :D

Northeast America is horrid. But I guess that's why you guys lost :p

Aye. To be honest we are. We love complaining though. We've even had complaints at work that the heating is on too high

It's not all bad though... grabbed some pictures on my phone on way back from lunch about an hour ago...

Wow Glasgow looks so much better in the snow then Detroit does...well Detroit would have to look good in the first place .

Compulsory? Not by a long shot. A smart idea for about 25% of the country? Possibly. Or at least a good set of All Seasons.

Snow and chilly (notice I didn't say cold :p) causing that here just wouldn't happen. You know what we do when it's 0°F and snowing? Go to outdoor (American) football games. :p

This, however... I completely understand.

Isn't it just Quebec that requires them? I remember seeing something about that somewhere.

We had heavy snow for most of yesterday in Holland, so we're getting close to a foot of accumulation. I'm enjoying my snow tires. I haven't had any issues with getting stuck so far, even though my front end scrapes on some of the snow, my DSG is far from smooth and I still don't really have a clue what I'm doing.

It does look awesome indeed i am supposed to be through there gigging bout every night this week but the snow came and i cant get a train

Im bout 40miles down the road and the weather is

Bout 3ft of snow, tempratures that are freezing (-14 was recorded one night) and its literally brought my town and work to a standstill

Snowpocolypse V1.0 inbound, 1-2" tomorrow night, 2-4" Sunday, and then 1-3" on Sunday night...so all total we are looking at 4-9" of new snow by Monday morning. This is not the kind of white Xmas I want, all I want is white, sandy beaches. I knew I should have went to the Caribbean.

That's not bad. We had that in a day on Monday. Weather.com is giving us a lake effect warning of 8" here through Monday. Is that the same storm that will be hitting you?

And it's only 7:30pm. Looks like a chilly night is in store.

bout an hour since I had to rock it out...though I almost want to get a pic of the eclipse which hasn't moved since last night:lol:

It's 24C outside right now. 33C tomorrow. But mid December and still no real summer weather in sight. :(

And back into the low 20's next week and rain. This could be our coldest Christmas in years. :(
