I still don't understand how we are supposedly sucking so much power from the grids. Whenever it reaches these often sickening temperatures the majority of people with common sense turn off immediately all lights, televisions and any other AC-powered sources that produce reasonable heat. We would normally have about 5 -10 lights on anywhere in the house right about now, including a few of the 7 televisions, and yet we currently have no lights on nor televisions and it says we are using a huge amount of power? Surely a single air conditioner does not use more power than 5 lights and 2 televisions running simultaneously?

Our Government and electricity companies are too scroogy to provide suitable infrastructure for rare events like this. So they tell us to stop using the air cond unless we really have to. That obviously didnt work so now they are shutting down power to suburbs at random for 30mins at a time.

My suburb was not effected.
And it better not be either at least not while I am at home. They can cut the power at Marion for a bit tomorrow for all I care, we won't open the doors with out power, too much of a security risk.

We do? Oh wait I probably don't come under the banner of people with common sense.

In the home, yes. Unless it is a necessity or a very significant convenience such as a microwave, dishwasher or washing machine, all non-essentials such as televisions, game consoles and lights are usually best turned off.

Most aircons require 15amp power sockets for 3200watts +, normal power sockets are rated to 10amps.

5 lights are no more than 100 watts each (equal 500watts) then 2 TV's would be a couple hundred watts each at most which means less than 1000watts all up.

Most A/C and most electrical heaters are very heavy on energy.

Though evaporative air conditioners (they use water not a refrigerant) are cheaper, use less energy but generally less effective.

Energy-whores of all consumer electricals then? Thanks for the information, we used to have an evaporative air-con, they are rated at 2000 watts or so are they not?

Yeah, refrigerant based A/C requires a fairly large electric motor to drive the refrigerant pump, aswell as a fan to draw the air through cooling element then blow it out the front.

Evaporative just requires a large fan to circulate the air through water then through your house, and the power consumption depends on the unit size but I would expect most would use under 2kw's though (I could be wrong)

So, are you all supposed to get some more through the weekend as well?

Y'all FoolKiller. ;) Dang, I think the Alabama twang is starting to get to me... Anyway let me look at Noaa and see what's going on this weekend...
As for the pics... all I can say is wow... I'm glad for you that the tree didn't fall on your car! Randy

We got the same system that Ranhammer and Foolkiller got. Not much ice, but between 6 and 8 inches of snow overall.

Well they did it, they shut our suburbs power off for approx 45mins :(

I could have sworn that just a minute ago it said we were at -11°F. Now it's -6. KEEP GOING!

Actually, it looks like we just might. It's supposed to get up to 28 on Friday. I can finally get all the recyclable goods out of my garage and not freeze to death doing it!

They have shut off quite a lot of suburbs today with "Load Shedding" being the reason. ATM, Marion is now off for approx 1 Hour.

Luckily in the city where i work, I have yet to be affected.

I still feel sorry for you in SA, VIC. 32C here today, beautiful.:D

Yeah, but you have to live in Sydney :sly:.

47C (116F).

This is the longest and biggest heatwave in the history of Melbourne though, coming up to 4 days now over 43C, it's just unheard of. Generally we get a pretty nice low to mid 30s continuously with the occasional day dipping into the 40s, or rarely into the mid 40s.

Soon there will be T-Shirts with "I survived the 2009 Adelaide Heatwave"

Yeah, and I love living in Sydney right now, well 50 minutes from Sydney.:D

I am not liking you very much ATM. :)

Don't worry Melbourne will get it too, they generally get our weather a day later.
