Genesis Reveals Vision Gran Turismo Concept and GT Championship Racers

Genesis has unveiled a trio of new racing car concepts designed in collaboration with Gran Turismo, destined to take their places in the racing game series in the near future.

The Korean marque, part of the Hyundai Motor Group alongside Kia and electric sub-brand Ioniq, unveiled the three cars during a special event at the Monterey Car Week.

Each of the three models slots into existing vehicle brackets from Gran Turismo Sport, with a Vision Gran Turismo car — itself split into three separate designs — alongside Gr.4 and Gr.3 race cars. Sibling vehicles, under the Hyundai brand, already exist in GT Sport, so it’s unclear if these cars will replace them or appear as new cars under the Genesis brand.

The first of the three, and the only car physically present at the event is the G70 GR4. It’s based on the Genesis G70 sports sedan, facelifted late last year to coincide with the brand’s re-introduction to the European market.

In its regular form, the G70 four-door is available with the Hyundai Lambda V6 engine, shared with the Kia Stinger, producing 365hp and in both rear- and four-wheel drive versions. That means either version could slot into the Gr.4 class pretty easily, with the class open to any drivetrain type.

Sitting above the G70 GR4 is the mysteriously named “X GR3”. That was presented only in digital form in the on-track renders you see here, and it presents something of a puzzle.

It’s a two-door coupe, which is a model Genesis doesn’t currently produce. However it bears strong resemblance to the larger G80 luxury sedan at the front, and Genesis has registered trademarks in the USA for a vehicle called the GT80. That suggests the X GR3 previews this GT80 model, a replacement for the older Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

The original Hyundai Genesis Coupe also used the Lambda V6, but a 3.8-liter version, as does the new G80. We don’t yet know what will power the GT80, but it’s likely to be the same as the regular G80, which means the 420hp 5.0 Tau V8 is also possible, though it will be boosted to around 600hp for the Gr.3 car.

Both of the cars feature an unusual rose gold and black livery in these preview images, and the Gr.3 car also has mismatched wheels — with a classic DTM-style aero wheel at the front axle and an open seven-spoke wheel at the rear. This is a visual throwback to the Hyundai Genesis Coupe Gr.3 car in GT Sport, which has red front wheels and black rears.

One final vehicle in the special event is a Vision Gran Turismo car. This wasn’t presented as a fully realized vehicle, but previewed as three “potential” designs for the final product.

Described as “an elite racing vehicle”, the Genesis VGT was shown in three forms: Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie. Notably, the prototype names also included “GR1”, which suggests the car is destined for the in-game Gr.1 category. That’s a pretty broad church which covers top-level Le Mans racers from the 1980s up to the most recent LMP1-H cars before the switch to hypercars, but also a high performance road car-based racer in the Bugatti VGT Gr.1.

It’s not clear whether Genesis will select just one of these models to become the final Vision Gran Turismo car, or whether all three will appear in Gran Turismo at some point.

Also unknown is which Gran Turismo title will see the Genesis models make their debut. With Gran Turismo 7 pushed back a year, the 2022 FIA GT Online Championships will likely run on Gran Turismo Sport once again. That could mean we see the G70 and X models in Sport, but we’ll bring you more information as we get it.

Hyundai shouldn’t even be included in this game. Not even a performance car ! Hope this brand is not included in GT7.

Would really like Genesis to come out or decide to come back with the coupe…not everyone likes 4 door cars. I love my Genesis Coupe 3.8

See, this is something I sincerely love about the VGT program – you sometimes have stuff like this happening, where a brand will join without any warning. Plus, as someone who’s dad owns a G80, I’m pretty hyped to see Genesis potentially join the Manufacturers Series since it seems like they’ll have a Gr.3 and Gr.4 car to compete with.

I wonder if there will also be a Gr.N version added too. It’s interesting that only race models have been announced to come to GT at some point. Given that there’s both a Gr.3 & Gr.4, I assume that Genesis’ intentions are to become a new Manufacturer Series entry seperate from Hyundai.

The big question as always though is whether it will come to GTS or be put on hold until GT7. “Apparently” (take with a large grain of salt) there’s a rumour going around that one of the cars might be released next week. Regardless of if/when, I’d really like to see the Gr.3 & Gr.4 in GTS since we haven’t had any new racecars for a long time. Perhaps the Gr.1 gets held back for GT7 like the Lamborghini VGT. Who knows…

I think it could easily be solved by having most races limit the eligible cars to a certain group within the group, y’know? Like how there were some Daily Races in GTS that limited players to the Group C cars within Gr.1.

It can also be solved by creating sub-groups for each class.
        For example
        Gr.1 (Group C, LMP1, LMP1-H, VGT)
Gr.3 (FIA GT1, LM GTE, GT3, VGT, Gr.3 fictional, Concept)

In that case they could simply create more groups (which they should’ve done from day 1) .

I would love for Genesis to become it’s own brand in GT. It would be like exactly like Lexus and Toyota. But goddamn the Gr. 3 car looks so good
