Gran Turismo 5 Technical Analysis by Digital Foundry

You may recall the video performance analyses of the GT5 Time Trial demo and GT5 Prologue by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry. They’re back in action for GT5, and once again offer a technical evaluation that helps explain various challenges Polyphony Digital would have faced throughout the game’s development. They also go in-depth to uncover how the game performs differently in 3D, at various resolutions, in different on-screen situations, and even put it up against Gran Turismo 4 with surprising results…

Check out the full article here – I won’t go into all the details, but Digital Foundry considers GT5 a groundbreaking achievement and a significant step forward, despite a few highly pointed criticisms. Notably, the alpha effects – generated by smoke and water spray in the game – are particularly rough, and dynamic shadows on the day/night transitional circuits can be ugly. They also picked up on the inconsistent visual quality of the game’s standard cars, some of which can be “distressingly poor”. All of these critiques and many others, of course, have been mentioned ad nauseum in our forums, and it will be interesting to see if or how such issues are addressed in future updates.

What I was looking for in all of that was their opinion on whether or not I was better off manually setting my resolution to 720P instead of 1080P to cut down some of the jagginess. I didnt get that out of all that, did anyone else?

I love how they pretty much told PD and Kaz they released a S***y product.

  2. Paul Mc

Kaz has been busy on twitter today confirming mechanical damage for the December update.

I reckon lots of things might be added considering 8GBs is on your hard drive lots of stuff can be changed.

Jordan did we learn anything more from Kaz today he’s been replying a lot. Unfortunately my Japanese is non existent

    1. CML

Never seen this much desperation at downplaying a great franchise. From multiple accounts to flat out lies about so-called “GT fans” being disappointed with this game. The sales speak louder than fanboys. Sorry guys, the king is back and neither sh*t talking from other developers or bad press can do anything about it. lol

It must really get to these pathetic fanboys knowing that there is an exclusive franchise out there bigger than Halo. :)

  3. Someone

I actually had so many complaints when i first got the game and the deception was huge , but now i gave the game a second chance , and its starting to get more and more fun ,

However i really hope they let us
-Remove or change the HUD ,
-Let us test drive cars before buying ,
-Fast forward or rewind replays , and
    -Have a proper hood cam

  4. Walking Dead

The big question is, when did they really start testing the game consider the obvious errors with shadows and weather?

  5. XBL_Harrold

Yes, and it’s a shame for all the millions of people that bought this game want to return it. They should be given a demo.

  6. XBL_Harrold

I was kind of disappointed at first when I heard GT5 wouldn’t be available for the Xbox 360. But now im actually glad it didn’t. It has nothing against Forza Motorsport 3.
The damage is actually worse than in forza?

    1. Red_9

It has plenty on Forza 3. It has things like rally, NASCAR, offroad and night racing on Forza 3.

Damage and the standard car issue are the only two things Forza 3 bests GT5 at.

Though tbh there’s no reason why Forza 3 can’t be top sim. GT has been at the top for such a long time; another game with the right focus can certainly take the crown should they try hard enough.

The only problem is that Turn 10 are a bunch of arrogant pricks who still don’t realize how glitchy Forza 3 is.

    2. CML

“I was kind of disappointed at first when I heard GT5 wouldn’t be available for the Xbox 360.”

Wow… That first sentence alone makes you lose all credibility. Nothing to see here, people. Just another clueless 360 fanboy.

  7. G T Allegerita

The entire article is about people caring. Telling yourself that you’re such a big man must have lead you to believe that you speak the truth even though you have no idea what’s happening around you.

  8. Murcie

Never had any hitches. Sure, the shadows are, quite frankly, horrible, but I’ve noticed on Forza 3 that some of the shadows are jagged and pixellated as well. I run both games on a 23″ Full HD LCD LED monitor.

Haven’t had any frame drops or none of this “screen tearing” business. And the sounds are in my opinion brilliant, even on my cheapo Altec Lansing PC sound system. Love the sound of the Gallardo’s V10 on the IA-10 license test, sends chills up my spine.

    1. Shem

I didn’t find too much problem with the shadows. I’m playing 3ft from a 42″ HD LCD and I have to say that although I’m very pleased with the overall game, it seems most of the standard cars have been ported straight from GT4. Still, worth the wait if PD can sort out things like the HUD and some of the online options.

  9. Yaycandy69

im level 21 in the game but when does the nascar damage come in. im still only getting like little dents on the nascars when i crash them.

  10. desmalta

For the short amount of time that I’ve played I’ve noticed the shadows on the replays are horrible. Do I care? NO. I watch the replay to see how my line into and out of the corners is. Is there stuff that needs work? Yup, and I don’t care. I’m having the time of my life playing this awesome game. Anything that they do to improve it will make it even better. Stop bitching about the minor problems and enjoy the game you bitched about not having for 5 years.

    1. Madman Apex

desmalta… i agree. even when i play GTR-EVO on my computer i turn down the quality of the shadows.
my only major complaint is in the cockpit-view, nobody drives around a corner looking straight ahead. nobody. GT5 needs an option to set the “look to apex” amount like in GTR-EVO. i think im spoiled now. i drive using the bumper cam. GT series still kicks ass

    2. Drecklite

Every game has its faults. I have been waiting all this time for GT5. I am enjoying it and will continue to do so for the next few years. It is a great game.

    3. Benny44

Awesome game with a few MINOR issues. Just read the gamespot review, which only gave it an 8 but it had what I think was the best quote to sum up the game: “It’s unfortunate that much of what makes Gran Turismo 5 so great is under the hood rather than on display for everyone to see, but a powerful engine trumps a perfect paintjob every time”. At least most people on here realize what is really important in a racing game.

    4. thisisajoke

But what you’re failing to realize is..

Gran turismo tuning is the most unrealistic “tuning engine” ever used in a car game since Wangan midnight…
A 3sgte that tops out at 400hp seriously, yet throw in a skyline and there’s your 80909329043horses.

I don’t play racing sims with upgrades to compare stock car A vs stock car B that’s silly because the accuracy of the game isn’t close enough to use it as information. so when the tuning aspect of it is garbage you’ve dropped it’s usefulness and credibility

  11. Gulyo

The sounds are still unacceptably low quality !!!
Can not they heeeeaaarrr that ??????????????????
Dear PD, please hire an expert sound mixer engineer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You CAN NOT make good engine sound, you can not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Unbelievable, really !!!!!

    1. G T Allegerita

I don’t know if you have a 7.1 dolby surround set but if you use the 7.1 setting and put it in large theatre mode I believe that some cars sound very good then. I need to experiment more with this because some Ferrari’s didnt sound brutal enough but in the amateur 70’s sportscar challenge, everything that drove past me sounded like an untamed monster roaming through hell. It was uncomfortably impressive.

    2. Filipo

      @G T Allegerita
So we have to spend close to thousands of dollars in order to get only some of the cars to sound better?

No thanks. PD should have just fixed the sound from the start, or if not completely fix, at least put a noticable effort.

    3. Gulyo

I got GOOD sound system : big Jamo speakers and Onkyo reciever 5.1 …
But doesn’t matter how good is your system : GT sounds are ARTIFICIAL !!!
Hear Forza, Dirt, Shift etc sounds … all of them VERY good and you can identify the car just from the sound itself ! In GT5 you can not. It’s a shame, really …

    4. Madman Apex

if im not mistaken, and im sure someone can correct me if i am, but didnt PD gather up all the cars for GT4 and record all the exhaust sounds and all the engine sounds at 1000rpm intervals?!? arent the only sounds that PD “make” are the sounds in the menus when you ‘select’ ‘enter’ and ‘exit’?

    5. J. Hayden-Kart Racer

you guys are being pretty harsh.. i thought the engine sounds were awesome! dont forget how hard of a task it is to get 1031 cars to sound really good. if you wanted them perfect be my guest and wait for another few years and let them fix it! lol.

    6. Obli

Some engine sounds quite good, some awful… not heard anything amazing yet Overall, engine sounds are still generally poor.

    7. Mig

wow… really? ….. really people? you guys have to hear my cars cause i have some absolute monsters and some beautiful purr’ing machines… im starting to think i got a different game cause its just not adding up to what you perfectionists are saying….seriouly the 1st time i drove my fully worked Mustang i almost…. exploded

    8. J. Hayden-Kart Racer

i agree with you mig. i think all my cars sound great. even my stock honda civic (although sounds like a dying animal) sounds realistic lol. but seriously, the car sounds are a huge improvement from the last games, and again how can anyone expect anyone to make 1031 cars to sound perfect?

    9. Lilee

I dunno what OP is talking about. The sound is very good to me. A civic sounds like a civic. The Cobra 427 sounds like a cobra 427. Even a mini with a straightcut gearbox, sounds like a mini with a straight cut gearbox…

Maybe you are too used to hearing artifically produced car sounds in other games and to hear the reproduction of the real thing is foreign to your ears?

    10. researchALLwars

its not about making 1000+ cars sound ‘perfect’.

its about APPROACHING the quality of exhaust notes from any other game in the genre.

The g*d d*mn big motors still sound like kitchen appliances. WHERE is the throaty grumble at idle and raucus roar under throttle??? It’s not a quantum physics equation that must be overcome. This aspect of the programming should be downright easy to get right.

13 years of poorboy motor sounds. D*mnit I love Gran Turismo, why can’t PD see their own obvious warts?

    11. Mig

what i think some people have to realise is cars you hear on the street or even cars at motor shows simply are not constanly revving at 7000rpm-10,000rpm+ what you would hear on the street is cars a rpm from less then 3000rpm to about 7000rpm totally different sounds and i think gt5 got it right besides my mustang i was talking about earlier sounds like an absolute demon on idle

    12. Skiddy

I can really tell the diference in the engine sounds. Especially when you upgrade the exhaust. Also when you drive around many cars, each of them has distinct sound, you can’t miss it.

    13. BWX

If you want good sound get a good home theater. GT5 sounds great to me. 7.1 1000 watt system hooked up via HDMI 7.1 MPCM. Set to “Large Theater” and crank it up. It doesn’t sound all fake and over produced, it sounds REAL- and real is good. If you are listening to tiny crappy TV speakers, or a crappy home theater, quit complaining and go buy a good subwoofer.

  12. JustCause

I dont care what anybody says about GT5 but I am very impressed with the way they reduced the jaggies so much between prologue and GT5.The game looks absolutely fantastic.

  13. Jay

I found Digital Foundry’s technical analysis to be fair and to the point and that’s how it should be.

At least they saw though, that even with all the flaws that GT5 has, it still was a technical achievement.

  14. Mike

sometimes when I start a online race, the car is facing the others. Yes, the car is standing in the wrong direction. This game… is a big blitch

  15. Jack

Agree about the “alpha effects”. I was following some cars in the rain last night, with the high beams on, and it looked like I was behind the Millennium Falcon lol.

  16. CanAm1968

I love seeing the standard cars in the game as some are really bada$$. Sure, I don’t get the premium car cockpit view but I too grew up on GT1-4 and used the nose cam through those. That doesnt matter when you watch the replays though. At least audioly, you get to hear them correctly!

Even though I like the new addition of the weather effects….I never really enjoy driving in the rain and snow in real life, ya know? Nothing beats a crisp sunny day! I agree that driving at night on LeMans (aka Circuit de LaSarthe) can be a bit fuzzy. That could definitely be cleaned up and I hope it is in future updates.

  17. GT5_delayHATER!

I Love the standards and will always protect them from the haters, but hey, thinking more carefully, I can understand the haters, Kaz said they was tweeking the GT5 the last time they´ve delayed it, ok, but to deliver that kind of graphics? Hmmmmm…. I thought Kaz was a perfectionist but it´s clear that some cars was poorly made. =/

    1. MintBerryCrunch

Being a perfectionist and creating perfection are 2 different things.
They are limited in disk space, and even more limited by the consoles power. No matter how you look at it, what they managed to do with 5 year old technology is absolutely amazing.
Some people don’t seem to understand that there are limits, no matter how good the developers are.

  18. Russiansize

It’ll take some time to fix all kind of problems! As Kaz said, there’ll be everyweek/months updates. So all we have to do – is just waiting!

    1. shigllgetcha

i cant see them fixing anything. when he talked about patches he was talking about the online portion of the game at the same time so its not clear that he has any intention to fix anything outside the online modes

    2. chump

      @shigllgetcha
GT Prologue released patches that included new cars, modifications to physics etc. I don’t see why they wouldn’t for GT5

    3. Skiddy

ShadowBug is a known issue. If they could fix it, they would by now. I would just like them to patch general bugs and glitches (game freezing and such)

    4. Mig

mine hasnt frozen and i have put a lot of hours in (dam my zonda R is fast!) they said in a update notice that due to server loads some offline parts of the game may pause as your stats and race log is uploaded to the struggling servers

  19. Paul Mc

Screen tearing is quite noticeable which is a shame but it doesn’t take away from the overall experience. Regarding shadows its a general problem with the PS3 even games like Uncharted 2 have poor shadows. I’m happy overall I just wish it was a bit faster with the loading

    1. J. Hayden-Kart Racer

yea the loading does take a while and pretty soon im goin to download that ‘thing’ to make it load faster. if any knows how much it helps

    2. Benny44

J.Hayden, you haven’t loaded it yet? Trust me its worth it. When I first got the game, I couldn’t wait to play it, so I didn’t bother. An hour later, I installed it and it almost doubled the loading speed. Still a little slow, but much better.

    3. BWX

I have noticed NO TEARING at all. I play about 4 feet from a 52″ Sharp Aqos LCD HDTV connected to PS3 with HDMI. Set to run 1080p. I see no tearing ever, and yes I know exactly what it is.. I’ve seen it on PC games over the last 12 years or so. I’m starting to think that certain TVs show more of it, or different combinations of TVs and resolutions and ways of connecting them have a lot to do with if you see tearing or how bad it is.

  20. Topsu

All in all, I was very happy with the grpahics. Especially the framerate, the drops don’t bother me at all, they are not that noticeable.

  21. thisisajoke

So i wasn’t just talking out of my arse when i said “drive in the rain and it looks AWFUL most of the time when you tail a car”

    imagine that..

    Btw…FPS comedy proven

    1. Red_9

This is the only game in existence that would get this kind of treatment. No other game would you see that they would actually go into the technology under the hood to find MORE things to criticize about the game.

No one cares about jaggies in COD games, but we get to GT5 and all of a sudden we’re analyzing the technology.

Critics are being far too harsh on this game. FFXIII was in development for almost as long, and even THAT didn’t meet with such cynical critiques.

    2. thisisajoke

Call of Duty had 6 installments in the time this game had 1…

And No one gives a rats ass about FFXIII, Final fantasy has been a garbage franchise for years….There’s no need to give cynical critiques to games that only cater to a niche market of gamers that would buy it even if it looked like pong.

  22. DMC_S2000

Part of myself believe that this GT5 is “incomplete”, I originally wanted this game to be released in 2011, but I also know that Sony will be in trouble in announcing delays because it could be massive money loss for them….

I really hope patches for AI, Screen Tearing, and some graphics detail tweaking would be released to fix the game…

  23. John Marine

I blogged about the notion of whether people take GT5’s car list to have 200+ cars or 200+ cars… with 800+ leftovers. I still don’t have a PS3 or GT5, so I am mostly going on what I see in pictures. I am actually starting to feel more uneasy about a few issues regarding GT5, and Standard vs. Premium is one of them. The game looks pretty impressive to me based on what I’ve seen in videos and pictures. This technical analysis is still a highly interesting read regardless.

  24. BigMackAttack

I really dont think theres anything wrong with standards. Its adds variety to the competition, depth to the collecting, and MORE CARS TO DRIVE! I mean i love the cockpit view, I dont know how i would drive my go kart with out it.But im fine with chase, its how i played GT1-4 and GTPSP, and its still enjoyable. Some do look bad, but those are usually the POS that no one buys/uses anyway. The countach looks premium quality, and my Doge Ram and Impreza look fine. They have “damage” just as good a premiums, as i saw in the Sport Truck races. Seriously, some people complain WAYYYYYYYYYY to much.

    1. VEYRON STANDARD? WTF

people do complain way too much but some of the points in this article are true. The problem is people take these issues and blow them out of porportion. A lot of the reviews for this game are doing exactly that and it’s rediculous. There are so many incredible new things, big and small, and I can’t see how little issues can take away from what this game is. The positives vastly outweigh the negatives.

  25. Rusty*

Yeah I think it is great for fans to understand the huge complexity in making a game as realistic as GT5. It helps us all to appreciate the huge collabaration of the PD team players to bring this fantastic Sim to our screens!
Thanks to the boys who put this together! :D
    R*

    1. G T Allegerita

It proves that GT5 isn’t full hd by far. So we who were discussing it ad nauseum were right! If someone had mentioned it to Kaz months ago we wouldn’t have had to wait till these guys proved it and maybe we would have had the game in full hd now. Missed opportunity for gtplanet if you ask me.

    2. d3br34k5

We’ve all known that GT5p was rendered at 1280×1080 since the game was launched.

We all knew that GT5 would be rendered in the same manner.

The fact that GT5 isn’t ‘full HD’ isn’t news to anyone who’s been paying attention.

    3. G T Allegerita

Then why do they clearly state in this article “So we’re not seeing anything like native 1080p resolution here”?No, all Kaz ever said was it would be in 1080p. Making everybody think it would be full hd because to normal people there’s only one meaning for 1080p and that is 1920×1080 pixels and not 1×1080 or 1200×1080 or whatever crap they’re trying to feed us.

    4. G T Allegerita

The entire article is about people caring. Telling yourself that you’re such a big man must have lead you to believe that you speak the truth even though you have no idea what’s happening around you.
