Stranger Things’ David Harbour Set to Star in Gran Turismo Movie

The first piece of casting information about the upcoming Gran Turismo Movie has been revealed, with David Harbour set for a surprise starring role.

Hollywood Reporter was first to break the news of Harbour’s casting, stating that the actor would play the role of a retired racing driver who mentors the movie’s lead character, although we don’t yet know what the character will be called.

That will be, as we’ve already heard, a teenage gamer who wins a competition staged by Nissan to become a real racing driver — in a story that parallels Jann Mardenborough’s 2011 win in GT Academy and rise through the racing ranks. Sony Pictures has yet to reveal who will be case in this main role.

Harbour is an extremely well-known face courtesy of a number of recent roles. He’s played local police chief Jim Hopper through all four seasons of Netflix’s Stranger Things, took the title role in the reboot Hellboy movie, and was Alexei Shostakov (or Red Guardian) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow film.

Indeed he’s set for a busy 2023, reprising the roles of both Hopper in Stranger Things S5 and Red Guardian in the upcoming ensemble MCU Thunderbolts movie — as well as the unnamed character in Gran Turismo.

It’s quite a casting coup for the Gran Turismo movie, although with Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) directing the film and Jason Hall (American Sniper) writing, Harbour’s is unlikely to be the last big name attached to the project. It also appears that Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi will be serving as executive producer.

Gran Turismo is set for its premier on August 11, 2023, and we’ll bring you all the news as we get it.
