GT Sport Alfa Romeo 4C at Brands Hatch Gameplay Emerges From Russia

As we wander through the Gran Turismo Sport wilderness that is the lack of official gameplay, we can take solace that the game is still being showcased around the world during this quiet period — this time in Russia.

The above gameplay comes from GTPlanet member ‘Rage Racer‘, who attended Russia’s biggest video and computer game Expo, known as ‘IgroMir’. As with a lot of this footage, we see the player taking on the Brands Hatch circuit and the car of choice this time around is the beautiful Alfa Romeo 4C racer. There’s no distinguishable audio in the clip unfortunately (par for the course for off-screen gameplay) but we do get to see some more of what GT Sport offered at the show.

Gran-Turismo-Sport_2016_08-17-16_061

The footage itself seems pretty standard to what we’ve seen from other uploaders but there are a few interesting tid-bits as noted by GTPlanet user ‘hankolerd’. Firstly, driver head movement is observable as the player goes around the corners of the legendary British circuit. This is certainly a nice touch to increase the immersion a bit.

Secondly, the in-game car navigation display has smartly been used to show the rear-view of the car in live-time. Having this display clearly in view at all times makes the cockpit view a lot more useful than other camera options. As this is a Polyphony-designed creation, hopefully other similar models include this neat little feature.

Finally, as the player veers off-track we see a bit more of GT Sport’s behaviour characteristics when going into the grass. Accidents can happen in virtual racing just as much (if not more than) the real world, so how the game deals with off-track excursions is important to players.

Whilst not highlighting anything truly groundbreaking, it’s good to see what could possibly be a further evolution of GT Sport in the hands of event goers worldwide. Hopefully we’ll get some new information on the game soon as we still have new features to discover and a new release date to anticipate.

Excellent to see someone who can actually drive and is a real sim racer unlike all the noobs using bumper, chase, or hood camera.

    1. ArR29

I don’t think people who use bumper cam are “noobs”, it has better fov than onboard so I can understand why people prefer using it. Onboard cam is much more immersive though.

    2. GrumpyGrumps

There are certainly players who use bumper, chase, or hood cameras that are faster than many people who use the cockpit view. If that were me, being called a ‘noob’ wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. Being different and being wrong are not the same thing. I know, I looked them up in the dictionary. ;-)

^ besides that, cockpit view isn’t necessarily more realistic than bumper or hood view (at least as long as it’s not VR), because (in reality) our sight focuses on the road rather than the cockpit, and because we can move our head in reality, which gives us much more visual inputs than a virtual cockpit allows to have.

Further, in GT I’ve always thought that the cockpit gives me a worse experience than the bumper cam. I’ve no idea why, but I always feel like too much information is lost. It’s an issue I don’t have with other racing sims.

However, when we look at professional simulators, doesn’t it seem obvious a virtual cockpit projected on a 2D panel can’t be more realistic than other views?

In the strictest sense of the word, realism in a gaming context involves duplicating reality. Since we drive from the cockpit in real life, by default it’s the most “realistic” view in any video game. Doesn’t mean it’s the best, doesn’t mean it gives the best overall vision of the game, doesn’t mean it’s anyone’s particular personal preference. But it is the most realistic.

The cockpit view in GT was terrible. FOV was way too high and there was no way to adjust your viewpoint to move the pillars around that block your view or just to move closer to the front windshield/dash.

This game has been the same sense GT5P, like honestly I want someone to explain to me the major differences in GT5P and GT7Sport because I don’t see it. I wasted my money on that garbage excuse for a $60 game Gran Turismo 6 in hopes for that nostalgic feeling Gran Turismo 4 gave me as a kid.

    1. TomBrady

      Easy.

      GTS has 150 cars, GT5p had 70
GTS has 20 locations not including variations, GT5p had 6
GTS has a fully featured online mode, and even has a safety rating system, GT5p only had “quick race” modes
GTS has damage, and night driving/weather, GT5p didn’t.
GTS has superior physics to GT6, GT5p was years behind GT6 physics wise (based on opinions of GTS from respected people in the sim community)
      GTS is 1920 by 1080, GT5p was 1280 by 1080
GTS has a fully fledged career mode, GT5p did not

GTS isn’t even remotely comparable to a prologue. It’s more comparable to the odd number GT’s AKA first real GT’s on each new console. Even 5, if you don’t count the standard cars or DLC really wasn’t that far ahead of GTS. It had 200 cars not including standards, and only 20-something track locations.

But considering you’re ridiculous comments about GT6, despite it being completely superior to GT4 in nearly every single way, you’ll probably still have something to complain about with GT Sport so don’t buy it, buy it, who cares.

Eitherway, GTS is far beyond a simple prologue.

    1. Johnnypenso

You are absolutely wrong about that. I, like many others, are in wait and see mode. Some of us have switched to pc and don’t have a PS4 so the game will have to be awfully good for us to shell out $400+ for the system+game or $800+ for the system+wheel+game.

    2. celtiscorpion73

I agree with Johnnypenso. I still don’t have a PS4 either and until I see some really good reviews here, I’m not shelling out the cash for another PD failure.

    3. TomBrady

No I’m sure there will be some lunatics that still find a way to whine and complain about things that have only improved over the years, albeit not by a huge amount but then turn around and say they miss GT4 or GT2 which was not only inferior in the most important ways (physics/gameplay), but also is worse in the ways that cause people to crap on the more recent GT’s (sound, AI, career mode, online, etc.)

That’s what happened with GT5 and GT6, that’s probably what will happen with GTS. Some people let nostalgia get the better of them and can’t let it go.

    4. GrumpyGrumps

I’d tend to agree with this sentiment for the subset of players who already have a PS4. Would I buy a PS4 just to be able to play this game? Not a chance, even if it’s amazing. Will I buy this game since I already have a PS4? Immediately, and without hesitation.

What kind of game would cause me to buy a whole system just so I could play it? I don’t think there is one at the moment. While I’m admittedly jealous of all the mods that PC users have access too, but I wouldn’t go there for those alone. On the other hand, there might come a time when the Xbox One price point and the appeal of FH3 converge to render me powerless…=)

That interior camera is very nice, just a pity about every other angles! The hood cam is what I use most but Gran Turismo has always had the worst ones of any racing game! They can’t seem to decide between roof or bonnet, just do both! That chase camera, being so far away, feels like you’re driving an RC car. How does PD think this is okay?!

    1. TomBrady

because anyone using chase cam deserves to be punished. That’s Kunos philosophy with Assetto Corsa, and that’s how it should be in any simulator. This is a simulator, if you want chase cam, go play NFS.

    2. Ben Rogue

@TomBrady My biggest issue is with the hood cam.. Btw, that’s not the attitude to have. Maybe instead of PD being stuck in the mindset of “our way is best even if no one likes it” should change

“Secondly, the in-game car navigation display has smartly been used to show the rear-view of the car in live-time. Having this display clearly in view at all times makes the cockpit view a lot more useful than other camera options”

Not exactly sure what that’s a big deal when it was done in GT5 and GT6 with certain cars (Mainly, Super GT).

    1. TomBrady

Good driving man. Props for using cockpit view too like a real sim racer.

How many AI difficulties are there?

    2. Rage Racer

3 difficulties: Beginner, Intermediate and Professional. I tried Professional too, but it didn’t feel seriously different.

  5. Haitauer

I believe the AI level in these gameshow rigs must be very low. just to give some action for the occasional test driver.

things i noticed. The on screen steering wheel seems to follow movement very accurately and sharply. also the dashboard rear view screen is a cool detail and really adds to immersion.

    1. Ben Rogue

That is simply because the car has the digital rear view in real life. These were present in previous GT games also.

    1. Kovu

That’s what I thought as well, seeing how easily the player wins places. Looks like we’ll get the usual chase-the-rabbit-AI-races.

Then again, GT Sport aims for online racing… so it probably wouldn’t matter anyways.

However… I actually fell in love with Assetto Corsa for its ‘ridiculously hard’ difficulty levels of the AI. The AI-drivers may not be the smartest, but they make offline racing much more fun than in GT.

    2. Johnnypenso

What concerns me is the AI behaviour in certain situations especially after the cars are a bit sorted. At 0:40 he runs into the back of another car in the short Cooper straight, then easily pulls out and passes him. At 1:30 he starts battling with the Vette and it seems to be holding it’s own, the Vette even retaking the position after exiting Clark, but then mysteriously drops a boat anchor on the Brabham straight at 1:45 and lets the player waltz through unchallenged. Another bump and pass on Cooper at 2:11. An easy peasy pass for the lead at 2:32 after which, the AI is suddenly possessed by the spirit of Jimmy Clark and finds 5 or 6 seconds of pace and is able to keep up with the player. Classic rubber banding there.

Maybe the AI is set on easy…let’s hope so for the sake of anyone wishing a semi-realistic offline racing experience.

      @Kovu
      @John
      @TX

There’s a thing you guys might not have known about called “Difficulty levels”
and this AI may be set on the lowest for public accessibility

    4. TX Executioner

It’s the same old single file follow the leader type racing GT has always given us. He runs into the back of the Mclaren because instead of pulling out of line to actually attempt a pass, the AI jumped out of the gas to stay in line. Like I said, not a lot of I in their A.

    5. ALB123

I was coming to write something similar, Johnnypenso. Hopefully there are multiple AI settings, like Easy, Medium, High or however they want to do it. The person in the video went from worst to first in around 1.5 laps. And to be honest, the person in this video drove terribly. If there are AI settings, this would have to be Easy, I would hope.

    6. Johnnypenso

There are 3 we know of and this one was on intermediate, so it should be difficult for average drivers. He makes many, many mistakes and isn’t anywhere close to the potential of the car and wins in 2 laps anyway so intermediate is more like beginner in this case. In my old karting days we’d call this a “powder puff” race…lol.

    7. Kovu

      @The Chosen One

I’m aware of that (and I’m not trolling against GTS [I’m a Gran Turismo player from the very first day, and I’m actually looking forward to every iteration of the game]). However, this video demonstrates what will await us once GTS hits the stores. There’s two things I’m usually worried about the most in Gran Turismo: sounds and AI. And the video simply shows that there’s almost no improvement on the AI drivers. The player in the video isn’t really doing a good job (his car swings off, he doesn’t stay on the track), yet he easily manages to overtake the whole field in less than 2 laps.

What conclude from this is the following: offline races won’t have a qualifying. The AI is too easy, but PD compensates it by stretching the grid (to increase difficulty) – and that again can only be done without a standing start. Ergo, once again we’ll have the typical chase-the-rabbit races (which I’d prefer not to have).

  6. mikronimo

It seems like the guy had some qualification, before start the race, seen that he starts as 12th on 20 position… well, if it is confirmed, maybe, maybe, this time we can have a proper approach to a race in GT.

  7. rikiflsh_99

today i pre-ordered gt sport at gamestop…the shop assistant told me that gts will be released in february…let’s see if there will be confirmed…

    1. Johnnypenso

It’s well known in the gaming world that game shop assistants are the first to know the release dates of AAA games like Gran Turismo.
