GT Sport Daily Races: Old School Gran Turismo Cool (and Some Race Cars)

Gran Turismo Sport 1102 April 29, 2019 by

Polyphony Digital has mixed up the selection somewhat for this week’s Daily Races, with an unusual race format we’ve not seen before.

You won’t find it in Race C, the endurance event with tire and fuel use, though. That’s a standard-fare Gr.2 event at Fuji Speedway. The 13-lap race gives you a mix of available tire grades — Racing Hard and Racing Medium — and your choice of any of the six Super GT cars you have lurking in your garage. That said, if you want to win you’re most likely looking at the three 2016 cars rather than their older siblings.

Race B is a familiar setup too. This visits the most recent newly added circuit, Autopolis, with Gr.4 cars. Again it’s a garage car selection, so you can drive anything you’ve got to hand.

The new format event is in Race A. On the face of it, there’s not a lot of difference to the usual Race A style — it’s N300 cars at Suzuka’s East short course. What’s odd is that even though it’s a provided vehicle, there’s no set N300 car to use. Instead it’s a selection of Japanese “Gentleman’s Agreement” classics: Nissan R32, R33 and R34 Skyline GT-Rs; the Toyota MR2 ’97 and Supra RZ ’97; Honda’s NSX Type R ’92; the Mazda FD RX-7 Spirit R; the Subaru Impreza 22B; and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 4. This week also sees the 18th birthday of Gran Turismo 3, and that’s probably not a coincidence.

There’s one further surprise in store for you too. If you’ve been getting used to driving with the stability control (ASM) and counter-steer (CSA) driving aids, it’s time to adjust. Polyphony has taken the training wheels off and disabled these assists in all races.

All three races will run through to Monday, May 6.
