PlayStation Spain to Host National Gran Turismo Championship

Gran Turismo Sport 2 February 2, 2021 by

PlayStation Spain has organized an official national championship for Gran Turismo players resident in the country, which takes place later this month.

Going by the name of Campeonato Espana GT, the series is the first official national esports event for Gran Turismo Sport. The game has previously been the title of choice in other national events, notably the Japan National Sports Festival in 2019, 2020, and again in 2021, but this would mark the first PlayStation-organized championship at this level.

The competition will run across two stages. Firstly there’s a qualification period, which will allow players who live in Spain to set times in specific car/track combinations in live online rooms. Players will need to register through the official CEGT website before the qualifiers begin on February 4.

There’s three phases to the open qualification. First players will try to set their best times at Circuit Sainte-Croix A, during live 30-minute sessions. The fastest 14 across all the sessions will then take part in another half-hour live time trial at the combined Kyoto circuit (reverse layout). That will eliminate two drivers before another 30-minute session, this time at Alsace, to eliminate two more drivers. One final qualifying event will pick the six fastest times in a 30-minute run at Sardegna A. All sessions will use a specific Gr.3 vehicle.

These six final qualifiers will then take part in the full, 12-race championship alongside some of the biggest names in the Gran Turismo esports world. CEGT has selected Jose Brea, Coque Lopez, Alejandro Muhsen, Manuel Rodriguez, Nico Romero, and Jose Serrano to race in the series, with each previously representing their nation at GT Sport World Tour events.

All six races will be live-streamed by Marca and broadcast by sports TV channel Teledeporte (tdp). The schedule is as follows:

  • Round 1 – February 12 – Suzuka – 1830 UTC
  • Round 2 – February 19 – Interlagos – 1830 UTC
  • Round 3 – February 26 – Red Bull Ring – 1830 UTC
  • Round 4 – March 5 – Nurburgring – 1830 UTC
  • Round 5 – March 12 – Spa-Francorchamps – 1830 UTC
  • Round 6 – March 19 – Barcelona – 1830 UTC

Each round will feature two races, and pit strategy will be a component of both. There’s also a prize fund of €6,000, as well as a national title on offer.
