Polyphony Takes Second Look at Mercedes SLS AMG

sls-second-look

Mercedes-Benz is running a special blog, hosted by “Matthew”, covering the launch of the company’s new SLS AMG at various events around the world. Of course, he was on hand at the Tokyo Game Show, and shared the experience with the video above. While there’s little that we haven’t already seen, things get a little more interesting when Polyphony Digital employees show up to take a second look at the SLS on display.

Presumably, they’re looking to refine the model in the game, and seemed particularly curious about the functionality of the headlights. They also observe the opening of the fuel door cover – something which will need to be simulated thanks to the new, fully animated pit crews who attach a fueling rig to the car. As we slowly learn more and more about the game, it will be interesting to see how Yamauchi’s team choose to implement these small details.

If I had to guess why PD team took a second look into SLS it would be that this car is going to be the main car on the game’s cover and intro. So they might just needed more info about the car to be animated with for example gas being pumped in the pitstops as the pitcrew finishes putting gas in the car and changing the wheels one of them would close the gas cap. I don’t know that is just my guess… :)

Cars in previous GT may have their headlights on during night, but I doubt Polygons…err..Polyphony, paid as much attention to details as to turning on the headlights in their photoshoots. Granted, they are probably doing so for something in the opening trailer of GT5 or something, as someone mentioned.

What we all should have noticed is that the lights from the cars’ headlights at the night track in GT1-4 had no effect on the environment. If we had the option to turn off, it wouldn’t make a difference, if you know what I mean. I’m hoping it’ll happen in GT5.

I dont think them photographing headlights confirms night racing because cars had there full beams on even in GT4 on dusk tracks such as Hong Kong. Im more interested in the attention given to the indicators (turn signals) which I guess will finally have a place in GT5 (maybe when entering the pits!). I do think though PD go slightly overboard with things which leaves fans waiting for years and years.

I think that so much attention based on the SLS must mean that this is the flagship car of GT5 and its very likely it will be on the final cover and used loads in promotional material. Its a nice car but I think Mclaren did a better job with the SLR.

Ive just had a thought about why they could be focusing on the indicators and fuel filler caps…

    Formula 1…

In F1, once a a car enters the pit lane and puts on the speed limiter, the fuel filler cap opens and the rear light starts to flash.

Maybe “Polygon” they are planning on having the indicators flash and the fuel filler cap open once the car enters the pit lane.

Something small, but I think would add alot of extra realism to GT.

  5. RADracing

Didn’t Kaz say something about the real SLS being introduce on the market pretty much at the same time at about March next year?

  6. Corey

RAD keep in mind this was at the Tokyo GAME Show, over a month ago. I would be willing to be it was just some last details of the car since the only (one or two) SLS’ were in the TGS stage and they’ve had the car to work on since June at least

  7. RADracing

Seems to me that if Polygon, haha is still doing detail work on the SLS for the game that it would be a last minute deal with MBenz and Sony to feature the car in the GT5 game. Maybe that was a big reason why they pushed back the release since Kaz said before that GT5 was going to be released soon after GTpsp but had a change of plan for March, 2010. You think MBenz paid Sony to feature the SLS AMG for the cover and the game?

  8. AndyC

I think that one of the posts above that mentioned it’s for the opening credits probably had it – might mean no night racing in the proper sense.
But then proper rally games have been doing this for some time so no reason why not I suppose…

  9. RAugie

the comment about the headlight functionality means only 1 thing
    NIGHT RACING!!!
maybe you will be able to control your driver in your garage to be able to walk from car to car and get into one of them to start races or something…

  10. oppylocky

those women are beautiful, I wish PD would model those chicks! Anyway, the guy doing the presentation is of a poor calibre. As i try to watch it it becomes very infuriating. still at least we got to see some delightful shots of the SLS.

  11. ICANT55

@ GT911, Sounds like you hit it on the head… especially with the whole NASCAR/JGTC thing i wouldn’t be surpised to see some kind of pace car Etc… as for the head lights …. Im getting the feeling that there working on some Night racing, that could also explain why we keep seeing he tokyo Rt246… whatever it is im sure it’s gonna (BETTER!!!) be good….

  12. Wolgib07

I am not worried about Gran Turismo shirt, because ones i’ve seen a dude with Gran Turismo 4 shirt on the street in Spain (while my holidays) and he didn’t seem to be a PD employer or anything, he looked more like a GT fan.

  13. jamaicangamer

ima guess the blinkers r extra button options mainly for ppl with racing wheels (yehhh mehhh)

…man dat guy wuz a FRUIT

  14. GT911

This is an example about how serious PD works, i guess that maybe the door handle could be for some animation of the Driver entering in the car or maybe a change of driver during endurance races jejejeje (nahhhh).

The blinkers maybe for a pace car, who knows i remember the Skyline Pace Car in GT4 that only appears in Driving Missions.

Patient my friends we are going to get the ultimate driving simulator, just for now enjoy another games until GT5 is released.

Sure that guy is a tool and doesn’t know the name of polyphony digital but at least the part where you see them taking pictures and looking at some of the details is cool, the rest is just lame :P

That guy puts you off the second you start watching so I’d recommend watching this on mute, much… much better :P

PS: I’d do every one of those girls too bcb :P

  16. Tume

Okay, the presenter isn’t very good, but that doesn’t mean we have to tell lame gay jokes. They are not funny, and they make us look like idiots…

  17. TurboTeam

    @ Mickle Pickle

1st: you are right, the guy is gay-turismo
2nd: You are wrong. They are not toying with us, whe are toying with our selves…

  18. Mickle Pickle

It’s too much fun reading you girls making fun of this gay… (my bad: finger slip) >>> guy
the worst is that i agree with most of your comments :D aha

but seriously… they are building up this tension…

They know we are waiting eagerly, so they just feed us with S*&t….

they could very well find someone knowledgeable on games, if not at least expert on the GT scene, to cover this event…
.. but no! they’d rather go to the happiest place in town and pulled him out to make him a presenter on a subject he could not careless, unless of course to be at a gathering where boys are predominants :S

MB and PD are revealing only half of nothing to waste all of our time.

The fact is that They dont want to reveal anything… so they just present meaningless ‘entertainment’.

i would rather have them keep quiet instead of present this sort of video… They are wasting their time in lieu of working, and they are toying with us…

  19. JS

who is this guy? he cant do anything right and he’s getting paid to do this. Hire me! I can do a far better job than this tool and i’ll do it for less than he’s getting! lol

  20. Sam__NY

The guy cant drive, he looks half plastic, and he cant even read. I wanna see more of this guy! Infact he sorta reminds me of an espn Nascar announcer.

  21. ComputerGameMonkey

All racing game developers take images of all functionality of the car whether they implement it or not. It’s just good practice to get the reference while you have the car at your disposal.

And I would like a pointer to where this miracle software is that creates your mesh just from photos. We’ll all be out of a job if that was for real.

  22. GT Modus 5

Yes, please do the “traduct”, and provide link. Dan will be here later so he’ll sort it. Simples. This article has be posted up on N4G, the sespool of internet gaming sites, so expect the blind rabid fangirls to start spewing hate shortly.

  23. Rens

This guy is worse than Bruno without even trying to be.
And Polygon? OMG how hard is it to remember a name.
I hope he doesn’t forget his boyfriends name.

  24. S3 Racer

    HEy Moderators,

Got a new German article here dating from today. If requested i can help do the traduct. If interest . ask for link.

  25. Spion

That presenter is really wierd. He reminds me of the robots in I,Robot.

    Awesome car though.
Compare that to Forza’s showpiece car: a v10 audi. Forza… the Audi of racing games. How very average.

  26. Michael

I see Polyphony Digital is using cameras which is just perfect. Turn 10 guys were using some kind of scanner traces in one of their “making of” videos which is fine too, but tedious. Actually one might assume they did that video just to show off when in fact they are using cameras as well.

Nowadays there is such powerfull software hence expensive that there is no need for the artist to model any real object from scratch, or from a picture by looking at it. He just shoots the real object with a camera from all the different angles, then using this advanced software he gets the perfect 3d model of that object in his computer. That’s why I always thought Polyphony Digital is a bit unfair to us with long time of GT5 development, or maybe they are working on the physics model for 5 years? Or maybe I am missing something?

  27. tameem

    @ 1:40
meanwhile the show is over for today and everyone has left the building EVERYONE ;) well not really, the guys from POLYGON are still here

    BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
i fell off my chair and started rolling on floor laughing when when i watched this bit

P.S watch this part it gets hilarious after several times the way he shakes his head and whinks.

  28. jedaye

Does the special attention to headlights mean that night racing is pretty much confirmed. Why else would PD pay special attention to the lights?

  29. IronM@sk

@SonofUgly: Yes, it looks nice, but you need to STFU now. It will be released when it is released. Sick of hearing the same shit on every blog post.

@Zenith: My best guess is based on what Yamauchi said about the SLS in an earlier clip and the box art for GT5. If he wants this car for the box art then there is a good chance it will feature heavily in the GT5 intro movie, hence the attention to detail on the smaller parts. This may not transfer into the game itself (door handles why?). Maybe the filler cap for pit stops, but again more likely just for the intro movie.

Having said that, @StogyBear, I doubt we will see indicators in-game (really, purpose?), again more likely just for the intro movie.

  30. Mickle Pickle

This is news without being real news… what’s there to learn about???

I am starting to get impatient … i guess i Got only GT5P to chew on for now…
should i walk to the dark side and get myself a Xbox FM3 bundle??

but just thinking about that Turn 10 Dan G, it makes me want to puke…
What a turn off!!… there! i will be strong and will NOT buy the bundle…

i will just continue practicing on Prologue :D

  31. Zenith

I’m wondering what thy could possibly be doing with all those miniscule details in te car. The lights could be for night driving, MAYBE it’s feasible for the gascap to come up.

But really the door handle and blinkers? Polyphony really is serious about their models.

The guy in the vid is a complete tool. I love it how he fakes a crappy Japanese accent “they on only in daytime”

  32. Bram87

Nice on site view, but man; he sucks at driving! And Polygon??? You suck! Nice car though and he had the keys, so that makes him ok again…

  33. Alex Raymond

Oh, I’d love to have one of those GT shirts.
Nevertheless, seems that Yamauchi is definitely placing the SLS as the star of the game.
