Scion FR-S Confirmed as GT5 Downloadable Content, Playable at Tokyo Auto Show

The new Toyota 86/Scion FR-S was announced yesterday with a new GT5 trailer at the Tokyo Auto Show, though there was still no actual confirmation the car would actually be featured in the game.

Fortunately, earlier today, Scion themselves put any fears to rest via Twitter:

The #ScionFRS will be available as downloadable content in the new #GT5 game!

They also shared the picture you see above, which shows the car is playable in a special demo version of the game. Exactly when the car will become available to download is still not known, though its being launched in the “real world” this spring.

Thanks to iCyCo and Abraxas for digging this up!

So ,another FT86,but they call it a scion, i hope theres more than 2 cars 1 that we already have from the lic & they better have more tracks , enough with the helmets and suits , paints are fine but we need more tracks and newer cars . fi forza can have 2011 cars then so can gt5 .

    1. MadmuppGT

I did feel something was missing, totally ruins the experience, Plus the fact I dont die when I crash… totally unrealistic, SORT IT PD! :P

    1. CJSpencer77

??? is this a comment from an earlier thread or are you honestly complaining that Racing games today dont come with added inertia?

    2. another_jakhole

Let’s just ignore this tool. He’s completely stupid and he’s only here to make dumb comments and only if they’re against anything GT. Too bad people like him have to exist to equal it out.

  2. Dominic Toretto

theres already 2 of them & BTW they look way kooler than this 1, & a 200hp car only means that fully tuned it’ll have about 400 to 450hp & it’ll feel sluggish as hell, just look at the caterham 7 in real life that car is freakn fast for such a crappy car & in the game is 1 of the worse cars ever & PLEASE for the rest of the DLC give us something that we all would want

    1. Magic Ayrton

But you can’t please everyone.. what I want is much better sound , premium RUF’s all models, change wheel size and width on all premiuml models. I think that is reasonable.. how about it Kaz a RUF car pack? and not rough as in your engine sounds!

    1. MadmuppGT

Its different names for different regions I believe, Japan may get the Toyota, Uk/Europe the Subaru and the USA Scion

  3. Elitekilla29

Its good that they are adding these type of cars to the game. Instead of GTRs. I like the gtr it just that they got too many of them.

  4. Jocke2002

Ye but omg what disapointed im gonna be if they dont drop 2 or a least 1 track! Comon one car!? I really hope theirs more to come =)

  5. Nerix

Why not adding a few more European cars? There are already hundreds of asian/japanese cars. That´s okay, I like to drive them as well, but a car pool that is a little bit more balanced would be nice. Especially as there are so many European GT-fans.

    I would like to have a BMW Z8, e.g. :)

  6. racer445

i would love to see bikes. they may keep that for gt6 tho, cant wait to try the new scion frs. there will be more tracks and cars heading in this update for what ive heard.

    1. TokoTurismo

You never know Kaz was thinking about adding them in GT5 one time but not to sure anymore. Maybe we’ll see in GT6 I hope.

    2. Magic Ayrton

I am definately waiting for a sound check on the next GT (6) and maybe even the dlc.. not buying into that when clearly no effort has been made to make it sound less weedy and synthetic..for me, that ruins the whole tangability of the game and detracts from the the realistic handlng and physics engine.

  7. kollosson

If the last DLC is anything to go by then we should be getting more than just one car, can’t see them just releasing one car.
We may get a couple of standard to premiums and some new cars chucked in, hopefully something current plus like last time a couple of new tracks ? Dont know if its been mentioned before but at the end of the new intro movie it looks to me that the red bull could be blasting along the test course track from GT4 ? could be getting that track ?

    1. Bom15

In Vettels challange you see the X2010 being delivered and driven on the runway at Red Bulls hangar. I’d like to drive around there myself. Way more interesting than Topgears Track. Imagine weaving in and out of the planes and the hangars.

  8. G35US

::::::: DOUBLE HIGH FIVE::::::: Yeah!!! we have motherfunkin snow racing!!! SNOW!!!!!!!!! Where else can you race a Range Rover Concept (Stormer [Now the Evoque]) on dirt or snow!?

  9. TakeshiSkunk

Oh my god I’m so sick of people whining about it being a japanese car.

If you aren’t excited about this car you have no business calling yourself an auto enthusiast. I’m sure it’s mostly a bunch of children that think the only interesting cars are Ferraris and Veyrons and whatever overhyped billion dollar letdown is being built this month to post some record breaking number and fail miserably in every other category.

Look at the current market, there are so few enthusiast cars available that it’s sickening. Back in the 80s, 90s, even early 00s, there were tons of fantastic AFFORDABLE and PRACTICAL cars that were still sporty and built to appeal to DRIVERS. Since Honda dropped the S2000, the only car I can really think of that might fall into this forgotten enthusiast FR class is Genesis Coupe, and that’s really pushing the upper boundary of that classification. Even the S2000 was lacking in practicality, being a 2 seat convertible.

I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of important cars that I’ll remember after posting and then get called out on, but whatever. The point is that this car is the first step Toyota has taken in a LONG TIME towards remembering the car enthusiast fanbase they built up so well in the past. The 86/BRZ/FR-S is an extremely significant car and belongs in this game far more than any supercar. This is exactly the sort of car GT has always focused on and obviously where the interests of its developers (and most long-time fans of the series) lies. There’s more to driving than just looking at big numbers on your speedometer.

    1. TokoTurismo

      HIGH FIVE TOO!
I’ve wanted for the right time to say this for a long time but nows the time.
I myself doesn’t know why complainers are so dissapointed over something that is special to the game.
      Just because it lacks:

“Ohh, Gran Turismo 5 lacks sense of speed and it’s so dull and BOOOring.”

“Ohh, Gran Turismo 5 lacks a design system feature and customization which make it even more BOOOring.”

“Ohh, Gran Turismo 5 has to many japanese cars and lacks super cars like Ferraris and Bugattis.”

“Ohh, Gran Turismo 5 is a unfinished game and GT6 will take hmm let me see, 10 YEARS to maaaake.”

“Ohh, Gran Turismo 5’s DLCs is sooo lame and only has japanese cars coming in it.”

“Ohh, why can’t Gran Turismo 5 be more like Forza Motorsport 4 which has better engine sounds and cars despite it not having an old Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper but who cares they’re too slow and BOOOring and not as realistic as For-za Mo-torsport FOOOOUR.”

“Ohh, why isn’t Gran Turismo 5 upgrading standerd cars into premium, 850 half ass blah blah BLAAAAH!”

“Mooom, why did you get me Gran Turismo 5 instead of For-za Mo-torsport FOOOOUR, it’s so BOOOring and DUUUMN.”

“Hey guuuys, did you know For-za Mo-torsport FOOOOUR is the new king desite it not having night racing, off road racing which belongs in Dirt 3, and any other missing features For-za Mo-torsport FOOOOUR lacks but it was rated 9.5 by IGN higher then GT5 and you all should so get it. It kicks GT5’s ass sooooo haaaard. Eat that GT FAAAAANS.

“Gran Turismo this, Gran Turismo THAAAAT”

JUST STOP, IT’S DRING ME CRAZY! X(

    2. G35US

:::::: DOUBLE HIGH FIVE::::::: Yeah!!! we have motherfunkin snow racing!!! SNOW!!!!!!!!! Where else can you race a Range Rover Concept (Stormer [Now the Evoque]) on dirt or snow!?

    3. VspecZR1GT2RS89

      ++++1000

Spoken like a true enthuiast! People need to respect car and trucks of all types, espically if the company are making a legend icon again i.e. Toyota and Subaru FR-S/86/BRZ and Ford with the GT a few years back and even when Pontaic remade the GTO, people didn’t give praise and respected this legend, except true enthuiasts. So if you are not a enthuiast, please take your :censored: elsewhere.

    4. HKS racer

Still prefer some new tracks instead of this new “sporty” 86. You all call drivers, enthusiast, well we have 1000 cars, and only 27 tracks: Spa, Kart Space, Fuji Speedway, Suzuka Circuit, Daytona, Tsukuba, la Sarthe, Nürburgring Nordschleife, Indianapolis Motorspeedway, Monza, Top Gear, Laguna Seca, High Speed Ring, Cape Ring, Autumn Ring, Deep Forest, Grand Valley, Eiger Nordwand, Trial Mountain, London, Rome, Madrid, Tokyo R246, Cotè d’Azur, Special Stage 5, Special Stage 7. No, I wont count the night and day/reverese/no chicane/tiny variation as a new track, it’s still the same place. Then there are the unused dirt snow circuits and some weird custom track.
So, about DLC instead of making new cars they should give us more and more tracks as downloadable content. 5 $ for Spa was a good deal, I gladly buy other tracks, what about Silverstone, Mount Panorama, Imola, Brands Hatch, Road America and so on…

Oh and before I forget, why on Earth PD didn’t include Twing Ring Motegi in GT5??? Such an iconic JAPANESE track!! It’s kinda shockin you can find it in FM4 and not in GT5.. So yes, we need more tracks instead of the “new sporty Toyota 86”. WTF.

    5. TokoTurismo

      @mobiletone
Hahaha, are you kindding me? The very first thing in the setting I’ve change even in the demo of FM4 was change the handling into “simulation”. In the demo I liked it alot because the cars actually handled pretty well. Now that I’d gotten the full version, the cars for no reason started steering way to fast for me to control and were way to slippery on the road. I don’t know what happed but I liked it in the demo. I won’t even want to use it for drifting because the cars will steer to fast. If you know any way to control the cars in “simulation”, please tell. If it’s the sensitivity in control settings I know that already.

    6. mobiletone

@ TokoTurismo – i found the steering too flat at first and had to up my wheels sensitivity, i use a 200′ Logitech wheel on maximum setting and deadzone set to 0′ playing with a joypad i was all over the place. have you tried altering your sus/tyre settings? i found that makes a big difference to the feel of the car, my Sierra was very backendy until i removed the low profile wheels i’d fitted, feels spot on realistic now.

planning on getting the Datel 270 wheel in a couple of weeks time.

    7. TokoTurismo

Yep, did those too. :) I do use a controller too, so that’s maybe why. I understood everything you’d told me today, so I’m still gonna tweaking with the settings until I find the right one. Thank you for reply back though. ;)

    8. HKS racer

Anyway TokoTursimo this is GTplanet, if you wonna talk about FM4 there is a proper section in the forum, and there’s even Forzaplanet.net

    9. Bom15

@ G35US I’ll think u’ll find that the Range Stormer was the concept for the Range Rover sport. The concept for Evoque was called the LRX.

    1. mobiletone

*runs off to drive around Tsukuba in a Ford Sierra RS500 painted to match my own car*

Ah, the joys of owning both consoles.:) Forza has a more western oriented selection of cars.

I have owned and played GT since the very first and TBH they have dropped the ball a whole
      lot on GT5.

      Sorry guys but F4>GT5>GT4>F3>GT3

    2. TokoTurismo

Ever since I’ve gotten the “Tenth achievement”, I’ve just stopped playing FM4 for some odd reason. Now I’m like playing GT5 like a storm and lovin it. XD Woohoo! My yellow super Mini Cooper 1.3i was a blast in the Mini Challenge event. Love that car. :)

  10. G35US

Why are people complaining about cars so much? GT4 never had the capability of updates and DLC or seasonal events. What are people comparing it to?? We have over 1000 cars, we have continuous seasonal events, we have DLC available. We have more than enough. There are no other games that offer the quality GT has with continuous updates. GT is always at racing events, auto shows, etc. I never hear about Forza, or any other racing games at these events, have their own race cars, or create virtual cars when its introduced in the real world. GT5 is intense. There is only one way GT5 will go. UP! It will stop when it has maxed out and needs to save content for GT6… around 2013. Sit back, relax, and have the ride of your life.

    1. TokoTurismo

Oh my gosh you made me shine when you wrote that. I feel so alive now from your comment. :D Everything that erverybody wants will be in GT6. ;) I feel something really big is coming our way on that year.

    2. TokoTurismo

Nahhh, the standard cars are better in “used cars”. I’ve been buying each of them that came in, great to be a car collector. ^_^

  11. Bigtheo

I love how even in the gran turismo offical station things in the picture they’re using the Logitech Driving Force GT and not the thrustmaster wheel.

  12. R35 SKYLIN3

I think they should add sone real world race series cars like gt2, gt1… The mc12s, saleen s7s etc it’s a bit disappointing the game is so Japanese influenced…. Although I guess the fees for licensing and all that crap need to be considered

  13. MetaRidleyScott

The main problem is that all of the dlc (including this new one) have been variations of existing cars. We want NEW cars not new paint schemes. A year on and we’re still to get a premium Veyron. Absurd is an understatement.

    1. ktmracer1162

Why would you want a premium veyron to change rims ? There’s nothing you can possibly do to it to make it better

  14. SaintSaiya

This proves there will never be dlc with new cars, cars that havent been in gt5, only modified existing ones, I love gt5 but watching forzas 4 dlc trailers it makes me
    sad about gt5 :(

  15. ChicoMaloXD

I’m more interested on the BRZ.
I know same car XD but it’s the one I like best. I want the Road Version and the Super GT Version.

  16. Elitekilla29

Great! Cant wait for these cars to come out. And for the first time, it isnt a gtr skyline. we got enough of those.

  17. dragonitti

They announced it would be in the Game as DLC during yesterdays reveal of the car. Now the question is just “when?” Would be awesome to get a Touring or the option to RM it.

  18. HuskyGT

This is the closest that we’ve been to real “new content.”

It’s just a shame it will come in Scion form. I wanted the original JDM version. The Toyota 86.

But it’s good, because this way it feels more like a new car, instead of an upgrade of a car that’s already in the game. It will be funny to see Scion between the other premium dealerships though.

    1. another_jakhole

      standard?

wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I can’t believe he thinks that’s supposed to be funny in an ironic way.

  19. NJ72

i find it funny that the recent post ‘New Gran Turismo 5 DLC Approximately “Every Two Months”’ has a picture of the Toyota FT 86 concept lol

  20. DrTrouserPlank

A few cars is ok, but this game doesn’t need more cars. The thousand odd that are in there offer just about every weight, power and handling combination that there is.

The game desperately needs more tracks. Either real-world, or failing that remakes of the old classics.

    1. lebes14

I disagree to a very high degree. It needs more cars of specific classes for better racing. I’d kill for modern dtm or fia GT

  21. TheROADKRAKEN

(that was supposed to be a reply too a comment, thanks noScript!) Anyhow, why is Toyota hyping the Scion version in Tokyo??? It’s like if Chevy had an Ampera at the L.A. show instead of the Volt.

    1. Magic Ayrton

@ Roarofbender.. such a child… stop calling other people names when it’s you that clearly needs to grow up. I am not buying more junk that’s all, if you sit there buying all junk dlc then that’s what we will all get, forever!

  22. 88FoxBodyFan

It’s hilarious how the comments for every news story on this site always degenerate into a “I want this, I don’t want that” wishlist. How old are you people, 5?

    1. TokoTurismo

      @88FoxBodyFan
AWW, is the whiny boy jealous because we like the car and you don’t? Boohoo… HAHAHA! No need to get so jealous, we all know you’re just gonna get it anyways, so no big deal. Hahaha, hahahaha…

    2. 88FoxBodyFan

@Toko Actually, I quite like the car. If you would learn to read, you would see I’m not the complaining, just making an observation. I have not and I will not ever complain about any additional content PD wants to give/ sell me.

  23. RoarOfZonda

It’s as if there wasn’t enough Japanese cars in this game?
PLease.. please… pleeeeeeease give us more European and American cars.. please. I beg of you…

    1. deadcat777

Agree with you, we had enough of asian car. All the european and american cars are consider old. They seriously need to add new european and american cars in.

    2. GT5 X1

Its a japanese game, thats why we get Japanese cars. If it was American, there would have been lots of American cars. Just get over it!

    3. lancia delta hf

@gt5 x1, it isnt a japanese game, its a game made by a japanese company for the world market, if gt customers take on board your wisdom then you canguarentee the gt franchise will lose millions of customers next time out

  24. blauster654

I cant get excited over this. Please give us some non asian cars and Seattle. A Koenigsegg or two would be nice…or maybe a ford Capri.:)

    1. Bom15

it has to be a proper capri. The RS3100 Cologne will do nicely. Or even the wild Zakspeed Silohuette race car thing. I would also like A MG Metro 6R4. Grp.B monster with the engine that eventually went into the XJ220. And the Last grp.B car to win British Rally before Grp.B got banned. And the Audi Quattro S1 would be appreciated to.

    1. lancia delta hf

there are already 2 versions of it in the game all be it concepts, i dont understand why there are so many excited people, give us some 2011 european cars damnit

    1. NJ72

technically he just wants two of the same car XD just with a different badge on each!

I sure as hell hope they put a boxer engine in the scooby version though

  25. hardvibes

They better put LOTS OF NEW CARS in the next DLC. Not just the Toyota 86.
No more RM skylines, camaros, evos, sti etc….
    PLEASE

  26. Magic Ayrton

If that’s the shape of the future.. I’m not buying any more dlc.. plain and simple.. how about getting something we actually want?.. like a realistic engine note and a Ferrari Testarossa for example… oh and new RUF models.

I am not meaning to sound bitter… just saying..

    1. Diamond1586

@magic ayrton how do you know no one wants that car and everybody want a testarossa? Maybe there are other people on the world too.

    2. SavageEvil

No one wants a testarossa, that car is one of Ferrari’s worst creations to date. I’ll take the F50 over anything they have in their armada of cars. But I would prefer Vector M12 and the Weigert W8 and how about the Venturi Atlantique 400 and 600LM cars. So many awesome old cars that need to be brought back, Jaguar XJR 15, weird but nice and the all business Lotus Elise GT1…the boss baby.

    3. TokoTurismo

      @Magic Ayrton
Whoa relax buddy, it’s a pretty cool car none the less. Everything you’ve ever wanted will be in GT6. No worries, join us buying DLC in GT5 my friend, you’ll love it. ;) Trust us, PD, and even Kaz.

    4. Bom15

I agree with you about the old missing cars GT used to have. I would love to have the Shelby Cobra Daytona again. But seriously the F50? In my opinion the ugliest car Ferrari ever made? The car they said was an F1 car for the road. Seriously? Well that Failed. Caparo T1 or the Atom V8 any day please. The 1980’s Testarossa wasn’t exactly a brilliant car. Theres not many Ferraris after the 1970’s that where great cars. Looking or performance. I like the 288 GTO & Evo varient, 575GTC Evo and the F355 modern era. 458 & F40 already in game. But thats about it. Personnally I’d prefer some older Ferrari’s like a 1962 250 GTO, 1965 250GT California spider, 1969 312P, 1964 250 LM, 1958 250 Testa Rossa to name a few. But this just proves that everyone has different opinions. Theres never gonna be a game that satisfies everyones tastes.

    1. Eric W

I want PD to do away with oil changes and car washing! It’s a waist of time, it was fun in the beginning but really it’s a nuisance to maintain 500 to 1000 cars.

Having to rebuild the engine 5K to 10K is plenty.

    2. TokoTurismo

They should turn GT Auto into a tuning garage, where you’re viewing your car and choosing hundreds of parts for them.

  27. TokoTurismo

I like this car, can’t to drive it for sure. :) The track on the left screen, what is that? I hope it’s one of the classic GT tracks.

  28. caasimun_18

How many variations are there? This is gonna be another GTR isn’t it >.> But isn’t scion and subaru both owned by toyota anyway? All they were doing is testing names out…or there is a manufacturer conflict going on here

    1. Scuderia Paul

Scion is owned Toyota but Subaru is not. Toyota own 16.5% of Fuji Heavy Industries, of which Subaru is a subsidiary, so they are in partnership as opposed to being owned by them.

    2. GTP_Versatile

Subaru and Toyota are not Sister brands. As of now, there are only 3 variations of the Scitoyobaru

      (Scion – Toyota – Subaru)

    3. posimosh

Toyota makes scion. Toyota also makes Lexus . This the new scion could be some sort of (probably) low budget version of the lfa although MAJOR consessions would have to be made. However, toyota does not make the gtr in the variety that you are speaking of as it is made by Nissan. While gt5 has an embarrassment of “riches” with regards to Japanese sport coupe flavors, I would welcome more gtr classed race cars, chances are slim that this will happen as the “gtr” class was ended in the early 2000s
