Yamauchi Discusses Gran Turismo 5’s Delay

One of the more unpleasant surprises we’ve had waiting for Gran Turismo 5 was the unexpected postponement of the game’s March 2010 Japanese release. It was a quiet announcement, but set a somber tone at the beginning of the year for us eager fans. Since that time, we have not received any sort of information on exactly why that happened – until now. In an excellent interviewwith Dean Gibson of AutoExpress last weekend, Yamauchi-san clarified things a little bit:

“Actually, I think that March would’ve been too early. We could have produced the game in time to make that deadline, but the finished product wouldn’t have had everything that I wanted to include.”

Yamauchi also discusses why different manufacturers are in the game, and reiterates the fact that the ultimate release date is entirely up to Sony. For more, read the full interview here. Thanks to Dean for collaborating with me on this!

While it is great to finally receive clarification on the delay, I am still intrigued by the situation. Shortly after the delay was announced, I posted this analysis of the most likely reasons. As you may recall, Yamauchi and his translator did not hesitate to confirm the March date during this video interview with TechCrunch, which was filmed a mere four days before the postponement was announced by Sony. It would be very interesting to know what happened in those few short days which caused such a drastic change of plans…

Good question about the 3d tv,would we have 2 fork out the cash 4 a 3d tv in order 2 play gt5? I hope not, whats the point in 3d in a racing game anywho?

  2. jash

if they make gt5 3d can people with normal tvs play it with an hdmi cable without having all the line of the 2d showing

or does it mean that only people who have a new 3d tv can play it

-K.Y : “2 years hahaha, no no. dont worry much about that its gonna be sooner than expected”
    – Me : any hint about when?
K.Y: he laughed again and said soon.

    LOL@ that… Now this:
-Were there any cars you couldn’t get your hands on for GT5?
-We’re still rushing with GT5as we speak and will be doing so until the last possible moment, so we haven’t come to any conclusions on any of these just yet. There might be one or two cars which drop off if we run out of time.

OK, so it sounds to me like they are adding in more cars than they originally (in 2008) thought they were going to have in there. Could they be Porsches??

  4. Frozzy

You would expect Porsche in such a great game. Especially it seeing 911’s at the track alot of the time.

  5. Z06onGT5

Have u guys forgotten about the menu screen in gt5p under gt tv? It was taken off in Feb. If I recall and said expect a better version of it in gt5 due for release in 2010 now why wud they say that especially with no more updates known for prologue due @ this time right? I’ve been saying on here constantly jus wait for e3 and I’m not to sure about Christmas because the last gt game released around that time was gt2 Dec 28 1998 I think it was? Anywayz let’s jus b a lil more patient ppl…

  6. ---Stone---

I’ve always enjoyed racing RUFs in GT, but have always wanted like many, to drive Porsches in its ultimate representation(on a console anyways)…which would be in the Gran Turismo series.

I really hope that at least one of the set backs was the inclusion of some Porsche cars…and being held in the highest secrecy/confidentiallity as one of, or perhaps the biggest announcements at E3 for Gran Turismo… or something that we are going to find out when the game is finally released… a huge suprise.

I dont know what the hold up with Porsche is?… Im sure Sony and PD has thrown numbers around to obtain and add Porsche to the GT Franchise.

  7. cuco33

As much as I love RUF cars, I still want Porsches. Anyone think it’s possible for Porsche to be unveiled for GT5 at E3? Would be awesome. So many different models I’d want. I got my fix in other games but it wouldn’t be right to include Daihatsus, hybrids and electric cars and completely miss out on one of the biggest racing breed brands out there. Make it so Kaz/PD/Sony, make it so!

  8. Bernd

@Jope – RUF doesn’t tune Classic-Porsches, that’s right. We have to be content with recent models and someting like the “Yellow Bird” – no 917 in sight

  9. lsl

omg guys, can you read, have you even read the original article?

it has nothing to do with Kaz, it isn’t delayed because he wants his game to be perfect, it’s because SCE wants a later date, that’s all

interesting, that everybody hates a game, when it’s rushed, and being released few months before it’s actually done. And now it’s the other way, it’s delayed for months(years), and noone loves that either

    irony

anyway, i would have released the game, and patched it afterwards… it has a million content already, he just could add parts later (like AC2 DLC, but it could be free, cos it’s PS:D )

anyway, they at least could give us a fockin’ DATE

  10. Jope

    “RUF is Porsche, fyi.”

I doubt RUF do any classic Porsche models. For that, they’ll need the real license.

  11. Jope

“If I were Microsoft, I’d be figuring out how I could get the next gen hardware out in October ‘10 for $299.”

Interesting per se, but I’ll never ever buy another Microsoft console, if they stick to proprietary peripherals only.

  12. NBH

Unless the improvements are major I don’t understand this rush to get every single thing on the game disc. It’s like they have forgotten about dlc. If it takes them so long to model a premium car then release the game and continue with the modelling then release it as dlc. When Porsche becomes available, model the cars and release as dlc. Then all that work will go towards GT6. The constant additions could be endless and you have to draw a line somewhere so I expect the added bits to be big ie proper weather for a start.

  13. idlestation

@DYE_STICKY I completely agree with you.. after reading that interview I’m just all smiles. I don’t care about the delays and such.

I think Yamauchi-san only has the best in mind for GT5. After delivering the masterful previous versions of Gran Turismo, give the guy a little respect and have some faith in him.

PS I still hate sony 3D tvs..

  14. Bernd

What’s the matter with all you “I want Porsche-guys”? RUF is Porsche, fyi. They may not have the badge, but they have more HP than stock. Of course, I’d want to see the Carrera GT or the 917 in the game, but come on, we get tons of other epic cars, don’t we ?!

  15. CanAm1968

@blackjack – I never got a PSP so I dont know whether GT was epic for it or not. All I am saying is that when gt2 came out.. it was so much better than GT1. When GT3 came out.. while it didnt have near the cars and tracks GT2 had, the graphics and other features made it so much better. When GT4 came out, it blew away GT3. I think with GT5 Prologue being released a few years ago, GT5 is going to be the best GT ever…and should be one of the best video games ever…making it (imo) EPIC!

  16. LinPark

Wasn’t it about 8 months ago that this same guy said GT 5 is ready and we could release it whenever we want? And that was before they stopped working on it (even though it was finished) and put all their efforts behind GT PSP. How could March ’10 be too early if the game was already finished? Really fed up here – I noticed in one of the recent WRS threads that SpecIII was released Oct ’08 which is almost 18 months ago. I would much rather have heard a story like this – “Well, with the economy doing so poorly and all around the globe, we decided to shelve the product until people could actually afford it.” Instead, the honest truth is that Sony is holding this back to help sell more consoles this Christmas – real nice, stick it to the people who have been supporting you for the last 3 years! If I were Microsoft, I’d be figuring out how I could get the next gen hardware out in October ’10 for $299.

  17. Devedander

“i mean come on… to hell with any dlc right?”

I wouldn’t be surprised if this was indeed the plan to create DLC and make more $$$ that way.

  18. blackjack

“@ Canam1968 – This is good news because I know from the previous GTs, he will not release something that isnt polished and perfected. It will be epic when its done!!!!!!”

I’m not so sure, how many people can say that GT PSP was polished and perfected with EPIC all over it? It wont be long (in GT5 waiting time) before Kaz will have to start working on the next round of GT Academy surely?

  19. ---Stone---

i read the interview from the link above and this question/answer stands out.

The question: Were there any cars you couldn’t get your hands on for GT5?

Kaz: We’re still rushing with GT5 as we speak and will be doing so until the last possible moment, so we haven’t come to any conclusions on any of these just yet. There might be one or two cars which drop off if we run out of time
    ……………………………………………………………..

“If we run out of time”??

lol Kaz, can you file an extention to have more time to add those one or two cars? We all certainly would understand a 6month delay to have those one or two more cars added. i mean come on… to hell with any dlc right?

  20. Daniel

Forget about a summer release date. Sony wouldn’t ever let that slide…if this is their big title for the ps3 (cause final fantasy is cross platform now), they’ll hold off until christmas at the earliest. You can quote me on that.

  21. RAugie

5+ years in the making, this game better be the greatest video game ever created.

I hope my expectations are not too high….

  22. ---Stone---

    interesting post fail @ me…

and continuing from what I have started…

Did Kaz have a misunderstanding when Sony said ps2/10 yr life cycle… thinking it was “Sony has giving me a 10 year development and completion cycle to work on GT5… because I feel thoroughly rushed with 6 years coming up on working on GT5”

    and post 1 2 3

  23. ---Stone---

Maybe Sony should back off Kaz/PD and let Kaz release the master piece when Kaz is completely and absolutely satisfied with GT5

  24. DYE_STICKY

Wow hubble just took a look at that link and that is one sweet story kaz is my HERO take your time am not even mad anymore.

  25. JayKayEm

The Autoexpress interview quotes Kaz saying

‘GT5 will have a few historic models in it’

Few? A few? I hope its a darn sight more than a few!!!!!!!!

All your american muscle cars carried over from GT4 are more than a ‘few’ for a start.

Why are these interviews translated by a chimp?

  26. Rukgt5

Think it might be a good idea for PD/Sony to give us fans some solid information which is translated properly. E3 is not far away but I realy think we have been understanding with somebody’s quest for perfection, when it sounds like the final product may be not that perfect after all with the latest interview cock-up.

PD/SONY we are not asking to give us the game for free we just want to know goodies we will be spending many a hour with. : )

  27. Sam

@John Marine, “constant delays”? you people really make me laugh, for the last freaking time, GT5 had only one single official delay, and it was only for Japan, The EU and NA version never had any official release dates at all.

this is not Splinter cell convinced or Alan wake (which both games had over 4 delays and over 5 years in development.

  28. cuco33

I think about the only positive from all of this is that GT6 shouldn’t take all this amount of time to release… of course we’re still waiting on GT5. Looking forward to any and all info out of E3 regarding GT5. Only thing is I don’t think it will be any sort of ‘bomb drop’ effect like they might want…. personally, if Porsche was unveiled… I’d be a kid in a candy store

  29. Berlino Bear

Perhaps its delayed as the whole development team are busy playing Bad Company 2 like me.

GT5 can take as long as it wants for all I care now. BFBC2 is ace and I can have quick fix on Prologue when I need to relax.

  30. rkk01

Waiting for the Porsche licence then… says so in the interview :-)

“March would’ve been too early. We could have produced the game…but the finished product wouldn’t have had everything that I wanted to include

“Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo and Mercedes SLS. These are pretty exciting models – are there any more cars that are still to come?”

“Yes, we’re holding back more exciting models for when the game is released.”

“Porsche is definitely at the top of my wish list”

  31. Gran Turismo Vet

“It’s interesting that he says “the finished product wouldn’t have had everything that I wanted to include.” – implying that if the game HAD been released by now, features would have been omittited.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – I’m glad for the delay! ^^”

The only thing they would`ve omitted is 3D and some other crap nobody cares about! Sony shits all over the fans when it comes down to profit.

  32. wakenabeb

Maybe they finally got the Porsche license in that 4 day gap and decided to model all those before the launch.

  33. S3 Racer

@Hubbe: Kaz: we can release the game whenever we want…

I simply don’t listen anymore to Kaz. Sony and PD should have a PR- Press manager just for GT (who actually speaks English so nobody gets lost in translation. Kaz has no idea because Sony has a word too, and Sony can’t say a lot alone also because Kaz dictates where they are going.
I wait for E3 and hope they will reveal something there.

Sony promised its investors (investor meeting march 2010) that Gt will launch in 2010. I hope that because i can’t see a company lieing on their investors about such a big franchise.

At least E3 is approching and with it all our hopes. Hope that they will not go up in fumes

  34. Dim

As somebody said above, at some point you have to draw a line and release the game because there will ALWAYS be new things to add and improve.

Come on Kaz…. 5 years and still adding???

A friend of mine joked to me that GT5 will be out together with PS4 and I laughed at him, but not anymore…

At least we’ll get F1 2010 by September – really looking forward to this game.

  35. dbarrade

Jordan, I noticed you are personally thanked at the end of the interview, did you provide the questions by any chance?

I wonder if that whole flying car bug is a ploy to buy more time from Sony for Kaz and PD… March… “look there’s no way we can release it now, everytime you go 140km/h the car performs a wheelie.”

    Later that year…

“OK guys, we’ve finished everything we wanted to do, can someone change that + sign in the downforce equation to a – sign and fix the wheelie bug.”

  36. Tha_Rza

With the fifa worldcup comming up this summer, along with the first 3D broadcasts, it seems unlikely that Sony will release GT5 during that period. If we are lucky Xmas 2010. However wouldn’t be surprised to hear Marts 2011 or xmas 2011 :)
The release of 3D TVs must be the reason why we are not playing the game now..
At a very minimum they should give us a release date! (and stick to it)

  37. badbruddah

If it’s coming out before holiday this year, they have to come out swinging at E3. That’s 4~5 months before the game would come out. If there’s no release date announcement at E3, we’re in trouble.

  38. P37Mac

I wonder if all this time in the UK with GT Academy is going to translate into more British tracks and marques? Sending an R500 around Thruxton or an Atom to Sneterton would be some serious superleggera fun!

  39. maxpontiac

Of course it’s Sony. Why wouldnt Sony want GT5 for Christmas? Something has to compete with the next Halo game. It makes sense.

    Keep the faith GT fans!

  40. Skillcoil

You may regret if they released GT5 now due to missing stuff that were promised and lots of awkward bugs O_o

Really I quit waiting for GT5 for a while and now when I look at my calender … ooo 21st of April 2010 …that was too fast !

So I recommend you to ignore GT5 for now and give it some more days then look at your calender and its somewhere in Q4 :D

  41. Chris

Possibly Sony wanted it out March, and Yamauchi-san reluctantly agreed (as it is whatever Sony wants) but maybe he finally got through to Sony and got his way with a delay. Just thinking…

  42. Brand

If the finished product wouldn’t have included everything that he wanted, then the game isn’t finished. It’s as simple as that.

If the game was finished, the game would be out. Apparently, however many years they have been working on the game is not enough, which is absurd.

There is no point in blaming Sony if the game isn’t complete. That is straight from the horses mouth.

  43. bbcnascar2

He should have gave us the game in march then updated it later but sony wants to push there 3D tv’s…Hey sony I just purchased a 60″ Sony HDTV 3 years ago…..I need GT5 not a 3DTV

  44. Devedander

Great, now we have another level of buck passing available… it’s Sony’s fault.

I really have to wonder if that really means what it sounds like in that it seems much more reasonable that Sony has final veto power but they base their actions off KY’s desire.

I hope it’s a this year release too but credibility with statements from PD is pretty shot for me at this point.

Oh and radomer, he has never been happy with what was in a game after release, he said himself he immediately starts addressing the things he wasn’t happen about once a game comes out… so by that rational we the delay is caused by waiting for something that will never come.

  45. CanAm1968

Its finally nice to hear from Kaz after a lengthy silence.

The good news: I am encouraged to hear GT5 still isnt ready because its not up to his expectations yet. This is good news because I know from the previous GTs, he will not release something that isnt polished and perfected. It will be epic when its done!!!!!!

The bad bews: Oh god…more time to wait with no end in sight because there is no release date yet. The worst news is he isnt even in control of when its released….Sony is! :::::banging head into monitor::::::: we all will be very lucky to get an official release date at G3 and there is absolutely no guarantee its going to be this year. I think everyone needs to do alot of praying up to E3! Thank god the new F1 game will be here later in the year :)

  46. FerrariThug

If the games release date isn’t out by E3 I will never buy this game *hoping Sony is reading this*

  47. Mickle Pickle

Just a confirmation of what we already know and have been suspected… No real news here…

The only news we need to know is the release date….. NOT the date that they will announce the release date…

The game was due last Month… not yesterday Ferhound.

Oh well… i have better things to do anyways…
While waiting for the Sony green light, Kaz-san is killing time by tweeking his game a little more toward perfection…. all the better for us…

  48. FishforRent

Thanks Jordan! I Needed something from the man himself. Apparently, even the great Kaz has a boss as well.

  49. Geoff

“the finished product wouldn’t have had everything that I wanted to include.”

That is pretty much always going to be the case though. I would love to see FIA GT1 (gt1world.com) and ALMS over Nascar and I’m sure Kaz wants every series to be included but at some point you have to draw a line and ship something. Sounds like Christmas 2010 if we are lucky…

  50. newbielives

Why does GT not have Porsche, I thought it was a licensing issue in GT4 with EA but even Forza3 has Porsche

  51. randomer199

It’s interesting that he says “the finished product wouldn’t have had everything that I wanted to include.” – implying that if the game HAD been released by now, features would have been omittited.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – I’m glad for the delay! ^^

  52. John Marine

Well, it’s very understandable. That’s why I’m not as hateful when there are constant delays. I’m not going to hate on Gran Turismo games just because they take seemingly forever. But remember one thing- any Gran Turismo will NEVER be “Duke Nukem Forever.” So it’s a great article.

    I still don’t have a PS3, so I can wait.
