Gran Turismo 5’s Weather Conditions Still in Limbo

polypohony-digital-studios-tour-8Kazunori Yamauchi’s latest interview with ComputerBild.de may not drop any bombshells, but it definitely warrants a closer look. Google’s automated translation is a bit rough, so I’ve picked out the high points for you:

– When asked why GT5 is taking so long, Yamauchi reiterates the game is “difficult to develop”, and “the dimensions of the game are huge, it is simply too great. It is so complex, so vast in its scale”.

– There is pressure from Sony to deliver a high quality game, and the team at Polyphony Digital understand the implications of their work – it has potential to move many PlayStation 3 consoles for the company.

Physics, sound, and online-features will be Gran Turismo 5‘s greatest contributions to the evolution of the GT series.

Once again, damage which has been seen so far is not indicative of the “final product”. He admits the game will not be able to portray more severe accidents, but they’re still working to make it as “realistic as possible”.

Yamauchi’s most interesting responses come when the interviewer inquires (and continues to press) on dynamic weather and time-of-day functionality…

polypohony-digital-studios-tour-7CBS: And speaking of new features – as it looks, with weather and time of day?
Yamauchi: If you look back at the history of racing games, there were different weather conditions, or day and night racing games already in the eighties. But when we 1997 “Gran Turismo” made, not great at first, we dealt with such features, they did not bother us particularly.
We are constantly experimenting with weather and lighting conditions, and such things. If we had, we might feel tomorrow integrate into the game. But whether this feature is present or not is not the decisive factor. It’s about whether this feature is the overall quality of the game actually increased or whether it reduces it. Just out is our attention.

CBS: You do not say whether these features in the game or not?
Yamauchi: We are experimenting with it. I want to stress again that the value of a game does not really depend on how many features are offered, all of which in the final game is available. That does not decide whether a game is good or not. What we focus really is the question of whether the game is good in its entirety or not. We have to proceed somewhat cautiously.

Dynamic weather and lighting conditions are easily two of Gran Turismo 5’s most-wanted features, yet each time they’re discussed, Yamauchi dances around the question, instead discussing how they may affect the overall quality of the game. This leads to speculation they may be having trouble simulating these conditions along with other visual features which cannot be compromised (frame rate, for example). It would be fascinating to learn more about what’s really going on here, though the true answer may never leave the halls of Polyphony Digital.

Funny to see how the damage went from “expect perfection” to “realistic as possible” , how long we have been waiting for the damage? first the excuse of “car makers doesnt want damage” , after “we are perfectionists, we are not doing damage until we can do it perfectly”
This game should have damage long ago, well atleast is finally comming.

rofajole, Kazunori Yamauchi is 42 and I don’t understand how you figure it is GT5 that aged him, between 37 and 42 there naturally should be a difference. There is one thing that is good here, with age experience and knowledge is greater. Meaning that I can only salute his age. For example the talented creator of Half-Life serries Gabe Newell is 46, Hideo Kojima is also 46, look how cool are the games they make, Warren Spector(Deus Ex creator) is 55. Age is a plus here. Then look at Dan Greenawalt(Forza 3 director), he is too young, too stupid, he is a businessman that lacks selfconfidence and cries for attention, I bet more so because Microsoft is tied around his neck and strangling, give him a bit of space and time and he’ll grow some selfrespect like all the other cool game creators.

3. rofajole

What I’m about to say has nothing to do with the news, but Kaz looks like he aged A LOT in the past 4 yrs or so. Looking at his pictures now and the interviews, and watching his old GT4/GTHD interviews, it’s scary on how his work put into GT5 aged him so much =/

4. Michael

Yes it will be the best racing game in the world due to its very good physics and very special graphics. But it will not have new features and I suppose it may feel a bit old for many many people.

5. yanfloist

No matter what happens when GT5 comes out, it will still be the best of the best racing game in the WORLD!!!! and for a very long time until GT6 comes out. Additional features can come later, die-heart fans won’t die if weather and sense of time isn’t added. Right?? Come on, Damage is more important than those two damn features. Live with it, and be glad that your not the one who’s spending your entire life making a video game. Have some respect for Kazunori Yamauchi and his team!!

6. Canadian STIG

I feel rather sympathetic and inspired by Kaz. No rest, and his pursuit for perfection still pushes him and his team to these unheard of limits. I sometimes feel that he himself raised the bar to high that he himself can not jump over it.

Heres hoping Kaz, that when GT5 comes out, you’ll still be awake to witness it’s success…

A lot or some of you don’t seem to understand what’s going on here. Of course adding dynamic weather can only make the game better. The problem is at the caliber GT5 is, the ps3 may or may not be ready to handle such processing power.

He’s saying that if adding weather is gonna affect the overall quality of the game to the point where it’s worst with it than without, then it probably won’t make it in the final game.

8. Jorge

I guess there is always a compromise between: driving – replays – damage – weather
Driving is all about making sure the engine physics match a real simulation – Which is what

GranTurismo is all about.. you drive, and you drive. I am IN for this.
Replays is the soul of the game, look at you driving and passing other cars, and how beautiful they look… this is what they call pornGT. I am IN for this.

Damage, well, yes it’s nice to see a crash/wreck… but I prefer NOT to have it, than have it like the bouncing cars of FORZA3… or if we have it, let’s have it with ELEGANCE. If you like damage go to the likes of GRID or SHIFT arcade type of games.

Weather, I think they have figure it out: GT4 had 1 event with rain, and 1 or 2 of the endurace race circuits had light effects, not completely night, but some darkness was introduced. If I have to give away my replays for weather, no way Jose.

9. Fusion

As long as the racing is smooth and compelling, it doesnt matter if there is damage, weather or great backgrounds. Unless your pissing around, the background dont make didly squat to your racing line. We have been ok with no damage for the last 10 years, and true racers know that hiting restart of a race is gay.

@ Michael

I own a GeForce 7900GS Overclocked (600mhz core but 20pipelines) at similar raw performance like the one inside PS3 (550mhz and 24pipelines I think), And I noticed about a 25%~ penalty using HDR.

By the way, the HDR issues seen in GT5p, reminds me the same artifacts that I noticed in the PC Geforce 7, it has some artifacts with shadows.

P.S: I apologise for my poor English :p

Project Gotham Racing 4 got a wheather and night system
The most prominent addition to PGR4 is advanced weather effects that affect the look of the game and the physics of the cars on the track. The weather can change from sun to rain to snow to hail within a single race. A system logged on to Xbox Live will download weather data from The Weather Channel, allowing users to set in-game conditions to mirror current weather in their respective cities.

The game simulates ten types of weather, including clear days, clouds, light to stormy rain, fog, snow and even ice. In user-created races, weather is fully customisable along with all the other race variations. In the game’s expanded and improved career mode, weather is predetermined, which adds an extra obstacle for players to overcome.[10]
Bizarre Creations has released two videos showing the weather effects; one of the rain effects in St. Petersburg and one showing the snow in the Nürburgring.

12. Michael

GTR 1 came out a long time ago and it had very believable weather features. I am sure PS3 is capable of that and second of all HDR lighting is not taking much resources at all, maybe shadows to but when there is rain outside there can be no shadows, or HDR lighting(even if it requires a lot of power). So they can implement weather just perfectly, I suppose PS3 isn’t that weak that it can’t draw GTR1 weather like conditions. PS3 uses a Geforce 7 videochip and if you had that videocard for the PC you should know that HDR has almost no impact on performance, 1-2 fps maybe.
I am thinking somehow that Kazunori Yamauchi takes care of his pocket more than what gamers want. He might keep weather conditions for GT6 so that these new features will vastly reason customers to buy GT6. Just like Microsoft does and all the other businessmen in computer entertainment world.

i made an optimized translation for anyone interested:

Disappointment for the “Gran Turismo (GT 5)” fans: The much-anticipated PS3 debut of the brilliant racing game series no longer appears in 2009. At a press conference held at the Tokyo Game Show GT-father Kaz Yamauchi announced the release date: march 2010 – in Japan! When the game will appear in Germany, he left open. When visiting the developer Polyphony Digital studios in Tokyo, our news team got new infos about “GT 5” (there are over 950 vehicles, more than 20 places and over 70 track variations) and spoke to studio head Yamauchi on the issue date.

COMPUTER BILD SPIELE (CBS): There are now almost 150 people working on “Gran Turismo 5″ and yet the game is not finished, why?
Kazunori Yamauchi:”GT 5” is difficult to develop.

CBS: Why?
Yamauchi:The dimensions of the game are huge, it is simply too great. It is so complex, so vast in its scale.

CBS: Is “GT5” too ambicious? Are you too ambitious?
Yamauchi: We must reach a certain standard. The benchmark for a “Gran Turismo” is now very high.

CBS: Isn’t there a great danger that the people who want don’t want to wait anymore go out and look for other racing games?
Yamauchi: That may be true, but there is nothing that would let us develop the game faster. It’s not like we’re slowing down at the end. We do our best.I didn’t have a single day of rest this year, but the game is still not finished.

CBS: “Gran Turismo” is one of the most important games for the Playstation brand. Isn’t Kaz Hirai (CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment) knocking on your front door every day with the request to finish the game? And finally, to sell more PS3 consoles?
Yamauchi: He is not always here, but we really have pressure. And we do the whole thing not just for him, in my eyes it’s more of a liability to the company Sony, which has encouraged me and helped me to this life.

CBS: Is it true that you no don’t test other racing games and that you draw your inspiration solely from real racing?
Yamauchi: Almost true, but our people will buy a lot of the newest racing games, try them out, and discuss the features and differences between our games. And as far as I know, it’s usually so that the other developers take us as an example. So we get rather less inspiration from them for the creation of our games. I think that’s important thing is to really drive the car and take part in races – so thats the way I refer a lot of inspiration.

CBS: Why is it so important to accommodate a variety of online options in a modern racing game?
Yamauchi: The original games were played simultaneously by a crowd of people, like soccer or baseball. And what is obviously happening here, is communication between all of these people. Video games have only been there relatively recently and are a rather rare format in which one man plays the game for himself. I believe that the games with online connection, simply return to their original shape. You meet with your friends on a course and show your car, drives a time race and then come back to your friends for a little conversation – these are normal things that you would do in real life too, and so far this wasn’t possible in “Gran Turismo “, but now it is. That makes a big difference. I think it is more about the natural progress of things, I would not even describe it as a great new feature.

CBS: The damage model does not feel very realistic, why?
Yamauchi: The main reason is probably that the game is still in development. What we are currently showing, is not the final product.

CBS: We may expect realistic accidents?
Yamauchi:It depends a bit on how far you go.I have seen real accidents, where cars were squeezed to 30cm (12 inches, my american friends) high, we can not go that far. But we want to make it as realistic as possible.

CBS: And speaking of new features – as it looks, with weather and time of day?
Yamauchi: If you look back at the history of racing games, there were different weather conditions, or day and night racing games in the eighties already. But when we released “Gran Turismo” in ’97, we didn’t care for such features, they did not bother us particularly. We are constantly experimenting with weather and lighting conditions, and such things. If we had, we could integrate it into the game by tomorrow. But whether this feature is present or not is not the decisive factor. It’s about whether this feature actually increases the overall quality of the game or whether it reduces it. And there lies the main part of our attention.

CBS: So you don’t want to tell whether these features are in the game or not?
Yamauchi: We are experimenting with it. I want to stress again that the value of a game does not really depend on how many features are offered and what will be available in the final game. That does not decide whether a game is good or not. Worauf wir uns wirklich konzentrieren, ist die Frage, ob das Spiel in seiner Gesamtheit gut ist oder nicht. What we really focus on is the question of whether the game is good in its entirety or not. We have to proceed somewhat cautiously.

CBS: If you were not into motorsport like you are now, what kind of games you would like to design?
Yamauchi: Before the first “Gran Turismo”, I had brought about a hundred proposals for a variety of video games, from adventures to puzzles to RPG games and from pretty much any genre. But if I had to choose one off of racing games … Recently, I began to think that I would like to make a game that deals with the issue of life and death in the life of a man. Their meaning …

CBS: Why are the Polyphony Studios housing so many bycicles?
Yamauchi: Well, everyone in the company loves bycicles.

CBS: They’re just standing around like that?
Yamauchi: They are also driven. At the moment, there is a huge cycling-hype in Japan , road bikes and mountain bikes are very popular.

CBS: Then we can expect a tour-de-France game from you?
Yamauchi:Yes, that would be something that I would like to make and to have Lance Armstrong in here …

Hey,
Go look a the top of the page and look where Kaz stands in front of a schuedle.

can someone count the weeks? Is that for the Gt release. Is there something written in japenese that is interesting?

“GT” the world

15. johnny

They’ve rushed GT in the past. If they release it too early, they’ll end up with the GT2 98.2% complete bug, entire garage getting erased after a Machine Test but, or the double engine 1800hp Hill Climb Escudo bug. GT3 was delayed by well over a year, but was the best reviewed and bug free. GT4 was rushed with a last minute cut of all multiplayer and huge framerate drops on the night track. We don’t want that to happen again.

GT5 was promised for 2008 with damage, weather and better AI in that on-stage slideshow. I thought I’d be playing the Top Gear track in 2009. Now, there’s no way they’ll get damage done on 700+ cars by March, if Kaz is still defining the experience.

I just want better physics and no rush job. I’m fine if they just release another Prologue but with the Top Gear track, better physics, cockpits and damage for as many cars as they have done. It pains me, but if I’m honest: GT5 with damage and cockpits for 700+ cars (and now weather) is at least a year and a half away.

16. Corey

Johnny all the cars feel like jello anyway. Forza is a rushed game that hasn’t been put much thought into. Why does a demo look better than FM3?

I’ll believe the improved sound when I hear it.

Me too. I really, really hope PD significantly improves the sound effects before they even consider weather, perfect damage, etc.

18. Agathon

“- Physics, sound, and online-features will be Gran Turismo 5’s greatest contributions to the evolution of the GT series.” Sound’s very good to me, and im really looking forward to test the new physics as it is extremely important for my racing experience, improved sound would be great and a better online part is all goooood…

If the game ships with weather effects and day night cycle fine… would be fun to try that out, but if not i wont have any problems with that, id rather see the game around march than see PD try to cram every single user request in the game, and anything that hurt the framerate will have to wait for PS4…

If up to me id rather not have the new damage model, its a gimmick that im sure will not add to my racing experience, some kind of damage effect on the car sure but it dosent have to be visual it could just affect the handling and performance of the car.

19. johnny

Hate on Forza all day, but let’s be real here: Chassis stiffness, unsprung weight, tire deformation, tire gas heat, tire springyness, 360htz update rate, mclaren f1 developed aero model = better physics. I’d take cutting edge physics (and better AI) over weather any day.

20. Beseiden

Hello fellow “racers”,

In my opinion, the weather feature is important for a even more intense simulation, and every time i think about it i remember in GT5P the map in the main menu with the circuit location and current weather conditions. Why not to link the real weather with the game, that way no need to randomize it (unless the system is offline), and giving aeven more “real” touch to the experience.

Just a idea i wanted to share.

Be well, John Spartan! :D

21. meSHUMI

it better have weather and day/night cycles…if it doesn’t then, we have to ask ourselves how different is GT5 from GT4?what new features have they added that would make me drop $60 for this game, instead of playing GT4 again?? all i know is supercar challenge had dynamic weather, and the physics were the most realistic i have ever seen. all i ask for is a game that can do what supercar challenge can do, with the dynamic weather and the awesome physics but with more cars……please pholyphony get the physics and the weather right…i want to be able to take a rear wheel drive car into a turn….stab the gas..and expect my back end to slide out and spin the car…..not like gt4 where all that happened was the engine hit the revv limiter…so unrealistic….what does a guy have to do to spin his car?…for people lookin to play a great racing game with almost perfect physics…play ferrari challenge or supercar challenge…
hopefully gt5 can match the physics…

22. Big Ron

Impelemtate weather effects is hard stuff for the developer. it is not easy to create a weather system, that looks realistic. And GT5 looks such amazing, you have to imagine, how good the rain have to look like.

GT5 is not limited to 60 fps. I think it hardly reaches the 60 fps, no room for more frames. and if you have a rain system in GT5, you can be sure, you will have 10 frames lower minimum.

and that is the same situation for the night system. to get all those light to work at a good performance is very hard to create.

Would be cool to get those features, but they ar not a must have.

But it would be good to have tracks like Tsukuba of GT4, which was in a wet condition. Nice for cool photo shootings.

23. Corey

Why did Forza add tire deformation? Because they think they could do it. But they don’t have active parts wtf

Kaz KNOWS he can do it, and with the option to turn it all off would add to the game, and raise the bar.

I mean seriously though, how are we going to do Top Gear laps without the wet? Or damp? C’mon. And please put in the Chevy and Suzuki

24. aleksandar SRB

Day night cycle is good for endurance races in other races it would be unrealistic. Image that you drive five lap race and day change in night??!??! Unrealistic stuff… Weather is much more important for me!!!!! Please PD add this in full game!!!! I will be satisfied if we got day night cycle just on Nirburgring and circuit de la satre….
Sorry for my english am from Serbia

25. Alex

I think adding the Dynamic weather change, and night / day cycle would enchance the driving simulation, and add another part to the game, that overall would increase the driving simulation experience: “The complete game of it’s time” ..

I think the reason for the holding back on adding the features is because the game has been in development for so long, I bet Sona are pushing PD, to have a release, so they can continue their pusuit of PS3 Sales, and continue the hype of PS3 Exclusive next gen.
And also, the waiting has been long enough.

Maybe, just maybe. And i don’t know if this is possible.

Add the Dynamic weather / Rain, Night / day cycle at a later point as a download into the game?
or maybe, the PS3 can’t handle the added features, and PD, will need to wait until GT6, so they can handle the increased demand on the PS3 hardware, and development the game better.

All speculation from my part.
I just wanna play GT5!!

26. Zenith

Did he say SOUND IMPROVEMENT?

Honestly I think we should be happy polyphony takes the time to do everything perfectly. It’s what seperates them from Turn 10 and other console developers

27. RacingFreak

@ Fritter

I’m one of those people who was very excited to read the “physics, sound, and online features” sentence in that interview. I’ve been a pretty big sound critic throughout the forums, and I truly hope that the sound really is revamped to what I think it will be for GT5. GT5p is better than any other game in the series as far as sound goes, and I’ve noticed other people saying that it even sounds good on the PSP (but I can’t comment because I don’t have one)….so yes, this is good news to hear from my perspective.

@ Luke

Totally agree with you there. I’ve said multiple times that the tones seem to be in place for most of the cars…but it’s missing that rawness. Now I’m not expecting a Suzuki Swift to sound as powerful as a Dodge Viper, but there has been something missing with a lot of the cars, regardless of whether the tone is correct for the cars…it just needs LIFE. If they can make it sound like how I feel when I drive in a car, I’ll be very pleased, as G-froces don’t exist in my living room. Having said that though, even if the sounds in GT5 are identical to GT5:p, I can still live with it, but I’ll be wondering “what it could’ve been”

As for weather….honestly I would love to see it….but I don’t think it’s going to affect my perception of the game’s overall experience too much….more or less just something extra in my book….however, as some have mentioned, I think AT LEAST day/night cycles should be put in as it shouldn’t be as hard as weather…..just my 2 cents.

28. gtkiller

I would be happy with different times of day when re visiting tracks. That alone would satisfy me. They did something like that in “Metropolis Street Racer” on Dreamcast. For those that didn’t play the game, you would enter in your time zone and depending on when you played it would reflect those lighting conditions on the track. It didn’t represent them with totally accuracy but was close enough to get the idea across. At least it would makes the tracks feel fresh every time you re-played them. With weather they could possibly do the same thing. Sometimes the track conditions are dry and other times it’s raining. Just having some different variations can make them less boring.

29. jay gatsby

Night / day changes are possible, but rain will just be crazy since it will really affect the driving physics. The way the wind moves the water on the car, the way it drops on the pavement, traction control…I bet it’s a lot to do if they want to include this feature, because these guys won’t do it if the feature is not perfect.

weather conditions will be absolutely awsome, but I just don’t think it will happen…I will be pretty happy as long as you can really tune your car in the game…

30. Whatbrown

Seriously, did anyone read the part about better sound? That is 10 times more important than dynamic weather and day/night cycles in my opinion.

That is an extremely positive bit of news. Let’s not focus on the negative and the little details.

31. GT911

First stop complaining, the people here should relaxe, Kaz has more knowledge about what the engine of the game is capable or not capable to do, so stop saying the Formula game in 1991 had weather conditions because thats not the point, if Kaz want to add the feature he can do it, the problem here if is that feature will affect several things like the reflection on the body of the cars, maybe the drops over the windshield would not react to the wind…, so PD has to consider many diferent things, because he will not add the weather effects if they reduced some other things and them the people here will say the rain effect is crap and blah blah blah…, i laugh when i read people here giving advise without realize that Kaz knows more than we can imagine.

I guess the day/night is more ease to add because is just move the light fount to another place (in this case the sun), so when the day is close to finish, just put some lights in the track, but with weather depends on wich feature could been affected, like shadowing, the reflection of trees, buildings, other cars in the body… so how knows… at least we know that Xavier Ocampos saw a video featuring a night race.

32. Luke

“And for weather: It’s a racing sim. and in reality 99% of races are in the day.”

Exactly the same with night races. In the end it`s only really noticeable in the endurance races. No must have for me, but especially day/night cycle would be nice.

But what really bothered me in the GT series is the sound, music is horrible, but i have it turned of in races anyway, the sound of the cars is pretty realistic, you can hear what kind of engine you are driving, or even what car you are in. But there is not enough life in those sounds, they have to be a bit louder, more …. RAW, especially in cockpit view. I`m very pleased to read that sound is one of the most improved things. imo NFS Shift has great car sounds, they sound raw and aggressive, like they want to eat you alive ;)

33. S3 Racer

People! Stop saying it’s easy to develop that and that. So create your own game if it’s soo damn easy. It has a damn reason if he doesn’t wanna add them.

He want’s reality!! And not simply adding a stupid add’on . MANY VARIABLES. (@ razor car reflection is waht makes gt look like that!)
And for weather: It’s a racing sim. and in reality 99% of races are in the day.

Read the post again where kaz talks about rain and day cycles.
and he is the developper not u. He decides. not u . u buy the game or not. He doesn’t care of the one . and the others will buy it

34. The Masfer

By the way has anyone noticed that the new Argos chrismas catalog in the uk has gt advertised at 4th December is anyone going to tell them that they got it wrong

35. The Masfer

If weather is added the graphics will be destroyed and gran turismo will start to look like forza because the frame rate will be terrible

36. Turbo_3800

If they do add weather, I wouldn’t care if it looks like the rain/snow effect from Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 I’ll be content with that lmao. But seriously for me this feature isn’t really a must have right now, long as this game is in my hands soon that can be a later update. For day/night they should take cues from Test Drive LeMans even though it was a ps2 game it had good transition. The race cars had certain parts and paint on them that glowed at night, the tracks had lit up indicators on blind corners and I bet PD could make that a hell of alot better for GT5…BUT who knows

37. Aaron Jaggan (pranl)

i remembered in gt3 they reduced the number of cars on the track in the rain track and it still had frame rate issues.

38. Comet

Polyphony Digital should hire a team of over 150 people provided from Sony… and have them work on different teams like weather, damage, modeling, tracks, etc.
The deadline is coming, and March isn’t too far… I’m just getting a little bit worried that the time constraint may affect the game’s overall quality and lack of the much wanted features. :(
PLEASE, work hard for this game P.D.!!!

39. Luke

Why are you all talking about performance issues ? There are many games out there with combined weather effects and day/night cycle (GTA4). So PD can do it too, or even better without dangering the 60fps magic. Remember Grand Prix from Microprose ? Released 1991 with dynamic weather effects.
And in the interview he said they are constantly experimenting with weather and lightning, and he said if the feels like it, he can implement the feature immediately tomorrow. And he still has 5 months to develop.

btw. i remember a Initial D GT3 drift video, where a yellow Evo IV drifts through Tokyo on a rainy night.

40. Fritter

Everyone’s complaining about maybe having no weather, but only a couple people said anything about game’s sound being better. What happened to all of the ‘sound is GT’s biggest weakness’ threads?

Kaz – “It’s about whether this feature is the overall quality of the game actually increased or whether it reduces it. Just out is our attention.”

Kaz, this will only increase the quality!

43. derek hickey

Weather and a livery editor = best race game of all time

and another thing is it 20 track locations (which is shit) or 20 locations on a world map ie. usa, uk (which sounds better)

44. Sam__NY

Adding night racing wouldn’t be much of a challenge for PD, but adding weather effects is like redesigning the entire game. PD, being the perfectionists they are, would have to do everything from making trees blow in the wind to the clouds covering the sun, even programing the rain to flow to the lower points on the track. It’s much harder than you think.

45. David Macphail

Weather effects and proper day/night time cycles should come in racing games as standard. However if it doesn’t i’ll still happily buy GT5. Weather effects or not, it’s still the best, most authetic driving experience to be had short of actually getting into a car yourself.

46. Raghu

I kinda wish he’d let us know more about “being able to customize almost every aspect of the vehicle.” Maybe some screenshots or something.

47. Black Chamber

@Webbo – You said: “I don’t even understand why he’s even questioning putting this in the game, it’s the highest wanted feature in the game.”

100% agreed!

Rain and night racing only serve to make GT5 EVEN BETTER!

48. Black Chamber

Anyone that knows me here, knows that I am a major proponent for rain and night racing in GT5 – specifically rain and weather effects.

Gran Turismo 5 would be a better game if it included rain and night racing – or even time of day effects. How would adding these features take away from the realism and fun that the Gran Turismo series is famous for? Why would Yamauchi-san even make a statement mentioning the possibility of rain not making GT5 even better?

If nothing else, it would give GT fans something new to do with GT5 – to race in the rain in a Gran Turismo game – and at night.

Polyphony Digital should be focusing ALL of their attention on rain, night racing and damage in the time leading up to the game’s March 2010 release. That and possibly more vehicle brands [Koenigsegg, Gumpert, etc.]

49. S3 Racer

Day cycles not needing performance.?!?!?
Don’t talk if you don’t now. heared of dynamic lighting. Takes out a hell of performance. and all the dynamic light is more intense in dark enviromment 8night) than during day. and the hole dynamic light need to be reflected i real time from the car’s paint. that huge dude!
And we are not getting on again with the skidmarks, Has been treated more than enough. You got ur opinion the others got theirs.

50. S3 Racer

“look for how we playedd gt5p with only 5 circuits”

look for how long we played gt5p with only 5 circuits

SRY

51. S3 Racer

@ rajan
lol just like you predicted , some winers just afterwards. LOL

Guys let’s face the facts :
1- THE GAME IS STILL UNDER DEVELOPEMENT (MOST IMPORTANT), so it’s too soon in fact to criticize or say it will be perfect, we just don’t know for sure.

2- everybody here (at least i assume) is a gt fan boy more or less meaning you played other gt games. GT3 did u miss weather. NO.. GT4 missing damage.. No. So give it time and try it yourself… after that u can talk….

Don’t get me wrong. it would be hellish to have a game that actually can do all that realisticly.
But we are still in 2009, and not 2015. The computerpower of the ps3 is not layout for that much calculation. Too many variables. Writing a algorithm for dynamic weather takes alot of ram power. Don’t think of the ps3 as a supercomputer, it isn’t. I try every racing game, whether it’s a big seller or not. And needless to say GT stands out.
Look at all the games having damage, weather, skidmarks and all the fancy looking stuff. Does it really brighten your day if the physics of the car and car reflection are bullish? If it doesn’t support our beloved G25?? I Would say no,

Summary (surly i forget something)
GTR (sim’bin series) : +great physics, +full g25 support (modable), +great circuits, +nice featurettes (weather), -not enough cars, -bad visual damage, -not polished enough graphics

Supercar/ferrari challange: +nice physics, +nice circuit modelation, -no clutch, -not enough cars, -chucky and unpolished graphics, – no wheel settings, – ffb to strong
and wanna be simulator but doesn’t support clutch (I recieved mine yesterday, and so bad no clutch is supported)

Old NFS (before underground) +graphics, +for the time good physics, -arcardish

Underground-undercover +graphics, -too arcardish

Shift +graphics, damage,… -wanna be sim with no chance to ever go there, -g25 support with no proper settings,… -bad physics (there are even mods out to imrpove it, which makes it’s point of it’s own)….

At least
Forza: +great graphics, +nice physics, +wanna be sim, -50€ to play online? -no g25 support
-no HId controllers -too cocky developpers that need to be hit in the face for saying shit about KAz and gt (RESPECT BIATcH)
I was really thinking yesterday about going buy a elite forza pack. Then i looked a it on the internet, no g25 support (never) , only mircoshit wheel or fanatec which for what it is, is too expensive.

In conclusion, i hope u understand my point. Better proper physics with a proper wheel, nice car graphics (Gt has the best car reflection till date), than having little tweaks wich look nice but won’t make thhe pleasure of driving it last longer. look for how we playedd gt5p with only 5 circuits. No other game can compete with that. And that’s due to the amazing physics. Wait and see it will be awesome, thanks to proper car handling wich will you let forget the little flaws, it will be a game you will play for years and put a new benchmark for auomotive games. But my hand in fire for that.

sorry for the lenght at least you have passed 5 min waiting which is 5 min less waiting on Gt LOL

52. ItsHim

Weather and day/night cycles are a nice feature to have, although Kaz is absolutely right to question if it serves the gameplay.

As much fun as it was to race Le Sarthe in the night in Grid, it’s maybe not as appealing to most players to have very limited vision and look for the tiniest clues as to where the brake and turn-in points are for more than just a couple of minutes (as the day/night cycle is heavily accelerated in Grid). Best thing for me always was the relief to see the dawn and having survived the night without mayor havoc.

As to rainy weather, they’d have to model it very carefully. A wet track is not wet throughout, you’d get wetter and dryer parts and thus affecting handling severely on a corner to corner basis. Throw in some in depth tuning and chances are that the sheer possibilities of different setups are too much to tackle. Complexity is a good thing, but if pushed too far it takes more away than it can offer. Hardcore fans always look for the most challenging of experiences, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

I’d like to stress that Kaz actually said in the interview that they could add this feature “tomorrow” if they had to. So if nothing’s been lost in translation, it’s already finished and they probably had and have their doubts whether it would work out and enrich the experience. But I can see it as being “fun” on city courses.

Good to have yet another source that confirms damage, and thus collisions, are further looked into – bouncy rubber ball cars are not that much fun and it would add a challenge to race clean and concentrated.

I only hope they paid a lot of attention and detail to multiplayer – it’s a must have feature, but I’d be more than happy if they got a little surprise, extra, bonus in store for us.

Again, nothing really “new”, but it keeps people occupied and fills the blanks on a “news” site.

53. Luke

I don`t really care that much about weather, would be great, but it`s not a must have for me.
Night races on the other hand would be awesome as the war between heaven and hell. Not just because of the endurance races. Take the right track, right car, night time and you have the perfect Initial D experience ;)

54. adam

@ GMW: You seriously think GT5 will be released in ‘March if not earlier’ for UK/USA? What, after all of these delays and waiting around? Like I said on the forum… I’m expecting GT5 to come to the UK around June time. That way, I won’t be disappointed (again) if the UK/USA release date is even a few months after the Japan one.

55. Webbo

I don’t even understand why he’s even questioning putting this in the game, it’s the highest wanted feature in the game.

56. Gejost
- Physics, sound, and online-features will be Gran Turismo 5’s greatest contributions to the evolution of the GT series.
Finally, GT evolves into the right direction! Multiplayer is the future, they can’t stay behind.

57. Gregz0r

The 1998 & 2002 PC F1 sims ‘GP3’ and ‘GP4’ had dynamic rain, where a race could start dry, get gradually wet, then dry again, with a real drying line on the track, where it would be trecherous if you got offline.
It could be possible, but the performance hit would be huge, as the game already pushes the limits of the PS3, without the extra reflections and particle spray needed.

58. GMW

I think I would rather they release in March 2010 (or earlier if that is possible) with whatever they have up their sleeve than delay any further. Whatever doesn’t make it can be for DLC or GT6.

At this point I’m aching badly to play GT. I have even contemplated playing GT4 again on my PS3 from scratch since I lost it’s saves. However, I believe that might drain me before GT5 arrives and I would end up not enjoying/playing GT5 as much.

Every driving game I’m playing I find myself comparing it to GT5 based on what I know from playing GT5:P. So I’m already getting tired of NFS shift will soon move on to Forza 3 to tide me a little longer on the HD driving gaming front.

GT PSP might keep also me going to Christmas, but I only play it in bits and not long stretches at a go. One of the main reasons I keep on playing is I want to buy a select number of vehicles in it that I can immediately transfer to GT5 as soon as it launches, and have them unlocked from the get go in GT5.

59. Mad Mike

I really don’t care about weather conditions but I want a full visual customization like in Forza 3.Not just spoilers & rims

and day/night cycle

60. Razor

Night racing would require even less performance than normal day driving. Rain, on the other hand, could increase performance hit. Skidmarks – should not. PD – just do it.

61. Imari

Rajan, that’s just called good reporting. It’s something that people want to know about, and in the past PD has been coy about giving a straight answer. Good reporters press their subjects until they get a response, positive or negative.

I think this has been one of the best interviews I’ve seen in a while. The reporter asked good questions and got good answers about things that people want to know about.

62. jedaye

day/night cycles should be possible even without droping something else (eg framerate). It’s pretty much just changing the colour of the sky and turning lights on. Right?

But I would understand if dynamic weather was not possible because it requires a lot of calulations. Thing like tyre condtion and surfuce grip etc

63. JamesMay

FPS drops ? Pfff, the game is limited to 60 fps. I bet if they would run it without the limiter, it would be much higher, and there would be a lot of hardware power to spare.

64. shy

if weather effect will just cause another delay or hit on the performance of the game, then i dont need weather effects.

65. GMW

No dynamic weather will be a bit sad but it won’t ruin the experience I expect from GT5. Though I do hope they can simulate the passage of time from day to night or at least have some night driving as well. I also with they have point to point racing in ‘real’ roads rather than only in race tracks as that brings back some very fond memories of Need for Speed 1’s point to point road races!!

66. Dom

I think we won’t see rain in the game and the reason is that PD did not care about it as much as it’s fans do. It’s the same with damage. He said in that one interview, that the were working on damage now for 3 month. Too bad they are working on GT5 now for 5 years…
Actually, it shows the lack of openness that made GT strong (by focusing on certain aspects), but also vulnerable in the year 2010.
In many ways, GT5 will be no major advancement for the series and most likely a letdown for most fans, but then it will still be GT5 and we will love it for several reasons.

67. rajan

the interviewer seems to be looking for holes to pick through in the came, this is what the games industry has come to? picking holes in a game and when a feature is missing heavily critisize it based on that one feature being missing? sounds exactly like the type of tactic employed by certain other developers and publishers ‘buy our game because it has one more feature that the other and just because of that the other game sucks *cheesy-winning-microsoft smile* lets not forget how many magasines and websites will happily except a payout from the rival developer/publisher in question to give a bad rating and pick holes in the rival game.

I guarantee this comment will be followed by the usual noobs saying ‘this games sucks because [you cant customize/drift/its not easy/drive like an arse and still win} like in needforspeed’ or ‘this game sucks because [i cant see damage/im not patient so i bought forza instead/the weather doesnt change every 2mins like in gta/one car that i wanted is missing even though the rest are there/im stupid enough to believe microsofts buddies]

68. Mustang750R

seeing how PD works I assume they’re really concerned by how that would extend the development time because they would have to take into account how the water reacts when it strikes the vehicle and how that waters moves on the vehicle at different speeds and how the the tires would look as if soak in rain and then if you throw in night time you have to consider temperature change and lighting on every object. Now imagine how long it could take to make it more believable if combined, night races with rain.

69. Corbin

I think some of the reason why (if they are) having problems is bc we all know PD to be perfectionist, and if its not perfect, then their not going to do it. Would be very great to have the option to pick what kinda of weather you want or set to randomize depending on length of race.

70. Corey

I think it would add GT5 to a whole other level of games to include both of those features. Sure it could do without, but finally receiving the game and thinking “what if” would kill me.

71. boob

I think night time will be be sufficient because the cockpit view just makes it all that more exciting. In a lot of other racing sims, people comment how they rarely use rain.
