That will never happen unless the only way to score points is by winning. As long as 2nd place is rewarded points and it's not a ridiculous drop-off, consistency will win the championship 999 times out of 1000.
Way back in 2003, that's how Matt Kenseth won the championship. He only one once but racked up endless top ten finishes.

Guess which year the Chase system started?

Oh and there are examples before him. Pretty sure that Labonte in 1984 and 1996, Benny Parsons in 1973 and Alan Kulwicki in 1992 won all due to consistency and not getting the most wins. The Chase throws more of an advantage to winning but consistency is still key.

Didn't see the race but not surprised to read pages of mayhem (although it actually sounds worth it to watch the reair tonight). Not exactly thrilled that Brad won, but its not worth boiling my blood pressure over. He's got more at stake then I do so whatever.

Because Sr. Actually had talent

Let me guess, you're another one of those folk who think Austin just got handed that equipment and didn't work at all for it?

So basically its been ten years since the chase first started and so far, NASCAR has somehow managed to make the championship end up exactly like it did when Matt Kenseth won it?

I can only think of two years in the chase where wins made a difference.

The year Jimmie won most of the chase races, and the year Tony tied Carl in points but went crazy with the wins to earn the title.

Heck of a race! Brad K went out and won that one with Joey helping! I'm still not a fan of the chase, but that made Dega way more exciting

Brad earned a little of my respect back tonight. He kept clean, raced hard, got the job done, and even confessed up to his ridiculous actions from last week. "I'm not proud of what I did last week, but I'm proud of what we accomplished today" (slight paraphrase)

Cassil is leading a race. I repeat Cassil is leading a race
it's becoming a habit of his at plate tracks. Career best (on a plate track) was 11th, now 4th!

Bye Kvapil.
thanks Nostradamus! he finished 6th, equaling his career best... mind telling me who the Final 4 will be?

Booing from the spectators. Who do they think he is, Nico Rosberg?
it was my impression Nico is a likeable guy and has many fans worldwide, where was he booed? (don't reply if it's Silverstone :p)

Well I have him on my ignore list so no wonder :p
 at Keselowski's fans disliking each other! guys, there aren't that many of you to begin with lol!
I have a feeling you two have polish names/origins?

Ryan Newman for champion. Calling it now.
Without any wins. Giant middle finger at the new Chase system.
10 seasons after they implemented the system because of him (winning 7 races but losing the 2003 title to the more consistent Kenseth who won one), and whose best result this year is 3rd? yep, a huge middle finger haha.

__________

The 4 top cars this year (2, 4, 22 & 24) are still in... for those -like me- who like the old points system better or were just wondering, chasers in red:

1) Gordon 1115
2) Logano 1077
3) Keselowski 1043
4) Dale Jr. 1023
5) Harvick 1022
6) Kenseth 993
7) Newman 990
8) Johnson 967
9) Larson 967
10) Edwards 961
11) Hamlin 939 (counting the 75pts he got docked and Hornish's result at Fontana)
12) Kahne 901
13) Bowyer 885
14) Kyle Busch 881
15) Biffle 880

I'd love to see Kenseth or Newman take the title without winning a race, just to hear what excuses NASCAR can come up with.

The 88 would have done exactly that last year if this version of the chase had been in place then, if I remember rightly.

Spa and Monza.

Pretty sure he still wants to do Daytona, Indy and Le Mans all in the same year.

Raikkonen's best shot to win a Cup race is on a road course, so I'll think thats the only races he'll run. All he needs to do is run in the top 5, and anything can happen late in the race, leading to a win.

With no Ambrose or Montoya in the series, his chances of winning a road course race are actually pretty big right now. He could do it possibly on speed alone .

Even though it would be funny to see NASCAR's reaction to this, the problem is it wouldn't be just excuses. They'd most likely come up with some scheme even worse than the chase.

Actually, he still has AJ Allmendinger and if we remember at Watkins Glen, he managed to give Ambrose a hard time. There's also the fact that AJ has at least (I could be slightly wrong) 5 years worth of seat time in a cup car, whereas Raikkonen hardly has any.

Only drivers with wins get to compete in the final race for the championship regardless of points.

How do you figure?

There's 3 races left before Homestead and 4 drivers advance. If 3 different Chasers win, the last spot gets in on points, regardless of whether or not they have a win this season.

If Newman finishes 2nd these next 3 races, he's in.

It's a hypothetical situation if you happened to have read the posts....

And my response to it....

I fear Jeff will get cheated out of another one this year. :indiff:

Why would Bowyer suddenly take revenge for something that happened two years ago? Gordon was at least semi-justified for his actions. Sure he took it too far, but it got the message across nonetheless.

It died down awhile ago, best for everyone to keep it that way. Besides, Bowyer is already hated enough for the Richmond fiasco last year. Reviving something like this would secure his throne in the Underworld of NASCAR drivers.

I'm a Bowyer fan. Forget the 2013 Richmond crap. That doesn't matter to me. The fight? To me, its just emotions boiling over. It happens.

It's easy to get you riled up. I like Clint. I don't care for MWR. Clint may have lost his job is he didn't play dirty. The blame for that deal goes a lot deeper than Clint. Clint is the face. The 24 isn't the great guy everyone thinks he is. He is a PR dreamboy. NASCAR will bend over backwards for him. Semi justified does not mean justified. Probation till the end of the year for basically ruining someone's title shot by a beef. Kyle got parked. That was despicable by both.
