I'm a Gordon fan but I'm not mad at Newman, he did what had to be done. I'm mad at NASCAR for creating this stupid format. Get used to it I guess since this is working exactly as NASCAR wants with drivers making ridiculous moves and no punishment for it. (Except for Newman not having any wins and still being in the chase ).

That was a pretty nasty move by Newman. This year's chase is worse than ever. I don't really care for a series where a driver can literally win every single race of the season except for the last one and not be champion. Just purely idiotic.
The 2007 New England Patriots probably also think the Super Bowl is unfair.

Also, did I miss the Sprint Cup season where one driver won the first 35 races in the season?

If a mod sees this, can you please ban me for 10 days or so? It's in my best interest to not look at this thread right now.

Why do we still compare NASCAR and the NFL?

He was merely pointing out how it is still possible, not that it ever will.

Because NASCAR is now using an elimination-style playoffs, just like stick-and-ball sports. Sometimes the best teams get eliminated early. It's just part of the deal.

Great move by Newman. He did what he had to do.

Too bad for Gordon though.
Absolutely this. I'm dead certain that if Gordon was in Newman's position, he'd probably do the same thing. Hell, as a Jr. fan, I'm sure that Jr. would have done something that would make people go up in arms. Here's the kicker- as everyone knows, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are two of the most popular drivers. Would we be hearing this immense criticism if it was one of those two that did what Newman did? Would we hear it if Gordon did this and Newman got bounced for it? Probably not.

This. NASCAR should just get rid of the chase all together.
This^ all of this.

And fake?
But do I care? Of course not. Sure, it's a bit annoying to see your favorite driver get "cheated" out of a possible championship, but hey, if it makes the sport as a whole more exciting, then I'll take it. Also I'd rather see a 4-man battle for the championship rather than seeing one person 100 points ahead of everyone else and not making the final race any interesting whatsoever.

Denny Hamlin is in a very dangerous mindset right now. This could definitely be the year.

Yup. At least this year, the champion will be a new man.

GET IT?

Well, its not exactly the way I wanted Newman to be in but unfortunately this is the kind of situation NASCAR has created just for their pathetic ratings with this stupid gimmick. Chances are I'm done with Cup after this unless they get rid of the chase.

I'm already done, won't even bother keeping up with the news for next weekend. V8's are on, and we all know how much better those are. NASCAR could have had another 7 time champ, instead they screwed up the sport trying to rake in ratings which we all know didn't work considering all the empty seats at the races every weekend. This series needs a COMPLETE overhaul, the cars, the tracks, the schedule.....everything. Without that, they won't be around much longer.

Who knows, Junior might have been a champion by now too if the Chase didn't exist. This whole system was made to promote winning, but half of the winningest drivers this year won't race for the cup. While they made this to promote winning, one of the drivers competing for the cup (Newman) has no wins at all. Great job, NASCAR, great job. I'd frankly rather watch the Nationwide race next week even though that championship is already decided.

You know, you can almost say Hamlin and Newman have done everything needed to make it to where they are. Newman never got a break in 35 weeks to get there, everyone else has. If anyone is worthy on some level, it has to be him and what he has done weekly to keep himself close enough.

Sure winning means something but you can NEVER take out someone who is around a top 10 weekly and no DNF type races. I wouldn't call a champion someone who win 10-15 races and DNF as man or finishes 35 or worse after stuffing it in a wall, blowing up, etc.

Jeff should be there but that's the nature of the beast. I was hoping he would win 5 and next year call it his last year.

For me, I want to see either Newman or Hamlin win the championship. Newman for not having a single win throughout the year, and Hamlin for missing out on an entire race (Spring Martinsville, albeit due to an eye injury).

I never would've ever thought that a driver with no wins at all in a season would be so close to winning the championship in that same season.

Really astonished people are OK with Newman's dirty pass. If he did that to anybody besides a 20 year old rookie he would have been in a fist fight on pit lane.

But its OK because it was for the championship? Its never OK to drive dirty. Newman just showed me hes the type of guy who will do anything to win or come out on top. Just hope you arent one of his victims.

@Earth; That's how NASCAR has been over the past few years, and even in Earnhardt's time. Probably the one motorsport where dirty moves are allowed without major repercussions.
