Yup, going for the first time. My first GP, my first real experience of Formula 1. Going for all 3 days, totally looking forward to it.
I've only been to Silverstone once before for a driving experience, so this will be the first race I've watched there too.

F1 is one of my four trips to Silverstone this year :P
Where is everybody sat? Me and my dad have done Stowe for the past 4 years and will contiunie to do so for many years, best place to watch them come form Maggott/Becketts/Chapel and then the Hangar Straight/Stowe and then watch them drive away through Vale/Club.

Best thing to do on the Friday? Walk around the track during the F1 practice sessions, make sure you see the cars at Copse, Maggott/Becketts and up close on the Hangar Straight as a minimum.

I'll be in the new stands at Club. I already planned on walking the track on Friday because I've heard stand tickets give you access to any stand during Friday practice and I want to watch the cars take Copse, Maggotts, Becketts and blast down the Hangar straight. Usually when I go to Oulton I do a bit of a walk around the track and watch several races from different points, while you do miss a bit of action, I like to get a feel for the circuit and how each driver/car is reacting to it. It feels like I've got my value for money that way, I can watch it on TV if I want to see all the action, the benefit of being at the circuit is that you can see with your own eyes the different braking points etc. I also love to wander the paddock at Oulton, sadly this isn't so easy at a GP.

It will be interesting to see what the re-profiled Abbey is like and how it will work as the new turn 1.

It going with two other friends from Thursday to Monday. Tis gonna be EPIC. People keep saying I should take earplugs, but if I have to be deafened it should either be by Beethoven or by 24 V8s!

Yup i'm going, this will be my fourth time in the last five years, I only missed last year's grand prix. I'll be sitting in the club grandstand so i'll be able to see them come out of Stowe and watch them go all the way in to Abbey. And personally I've never worn earplugs, but it's definately the best way to go deaf! :sly:

I'll be at Becketts.

In the grandstand or the general area? I had a general admission ticket there a few years ago and I sat just at the entrance in to Becketts, there was no overtaking action but I never got bored of watching the cars fly in to the first right hander.

God no... went in '06, never again. However, I wish you all the best of fun, some beautiful weather, and some good on track action...

Does anyone how much some of the cheapest tickets cost? I live about an hour away from Silverstone and would really like to go there.

Race day tickets from £131 upwards
Weekend tickets from £152 upwards
Friday tickets from £56 upwards

My money would go on the friday only, all the benefits, the least of the inconveniences. You get to experience the sound of an F1 car, which IMO is the only reason to go, and it means you can go home and enjoy all the action on TV, with sensibly priced quality food and drink.. rather than wedged in on uncomforable seats, with no clue whats going on, eating manky £5 burgers and warm £4 lager...

Google is your friend.

Although, it's really expensive (IMO) for what it is, you can get better racing for half the price.

Grandstands. Hopefully I'll be able to see the new start/finish straight from it!

Had 3 day general admission last year and was at becketts, gone for Stowe in a grandstand this year - not going to miss having to get up horrendously early to get a decent spot on the sunday (the worst part of general admission)! Arriving on the Thursday then camping at silverstone's own camp site for the whole weekend until Monday. Apparently camping facilities will be much improved this year. Also hoping that arriving earlier means we're camped closer to the circuit, as it was a bit of a trek last year. Ordered my flag pole for the campsite today :)

As long as the campsite toilets are surrounded by stone walls, instead of plastic ones, them I'm good. :D

There was a skip near us which people seemed to be doing their business behind.

Not just number ones either...

It wasn't pleasant!

Stand tickets do indeed get you access to any grandstand on the Friday, as did GA tickets last year (which I assume will be the same this year)

I was sent free earplugs with my tickets last year (had to buy from a 3rd party) - we didn't use them, nor should you!

As a side note, if all is the same as last year you are quite ok to take in your own alcohol and sandwiches. Bag full of pre-mixed vodka red bulls (or at least asda's own make red bull) made for a day with incredibly little monetary outlay.

I think this is a bit overly negative really, there is more to it than simply experiencing the sound.
And find me a major sports event (or any event) where you get fancy food for cheap...I've never been to a concert, football match, race meeting or whatever where the food and drink has been especially nice unless its VIP hospitality. Quite simply I always try to avoid having to buy things at these events and nearly always take a sandwich. Eventually you do sometimes give in when it comes to ice cream and alcohol though.

I have gone to Oulton Park all these years simply because there is so much to see and do, you just have to have the interest to find it. The sound of motorsport is only one element that makes it so great to go and watch, there are so many things you don't appreciate simply watching on TV. Even at the GP at Silverstone where paddock access is not really available, there should be still a lot to see.

As for toilets, etc, well, I've heard bad things with regards to Silverstone so I hope that is improved.

True (no glass bottles IIRC), what I meant by that is, if it is a beautiful day, being sat at home with fresh, cool, beverages in the fridge, and a BBQ in the garden etc. etc. would be the better option in my opinion.

It is the only thing IMO that makes F1 any different to a race ticket for a different series.

It does vary, but the highest prices I've seen have been at Silverstone. The circuit sets prices for the food vendors within the circuit and frankly I think they take the ****, although possibly not considering what the Circuit charges for a 'pitch'. Not strictly a circuit, but I went to Santa Pod two weeks ago to watch some drag racing and the selection and price trounced pretty much everywhere else I've been.

Oulton Park is a lovely track to visit, and it pretty much got me hooked on going to BTCC races.

My point is that what F1 offers (at three times the cost) over a BTCC weekend for instance, is simply not enough -- infact, it's nothing, and it comes not only at a financial cost... but because F1 is such a big event there, the sheer weight of numbers have a hugely negative impact on most things (not least the traffic, the toilets, queues etc. etc). The only thing that was better about F1 at Silverstone, that I experienced, was the sound - in every other way it was a less enjoyable weekend for me than BTCC, LMES/ILMC or Britcar 24.. which says a lot as for the 24hr last year I slept outside, in the rain, on the rubble at Vale.

It used to be the case that F1 testing at Silverstone gave you three days of on track action and paddock access for £10, that was a no brainer and I have fond memories of that....

As for toilets, etc, well, I've heard bad things with regards to Silverstone so I hope that is improved.

Toilets at Silverstone are fine, probably above average for a UK cicuit, but like I say, with 130,000 people all using them they get pretty bad.

Nicest toilet I've seen at a circuit was the new ones they've built at Knockhill... faux granite and marble from memory...

... I know it sounds negative, but when I was an F1 fan it was hard enough to justify, and these days where my tastes have widened, F1 just doesn't cut the mustard for me ---- having said all that, I might get a Friday ticket and camp over on the Friday night. See some F1 cars before it get's too busy... then enjoy the atmosphere camping in the evening.

Ah, I see what you mean now. I just felt you were being overly negative in describing the overall experience - but you are spot on comparing it to smaller national events. Again, I feel this happens elsewhere too, you get a lot more for your money going to see a less popular band in a small venue, just as you get a lot more for your money seeing less popular motorsports.
But you still get something for seeing something massively popular, its not just the sound but its the atmosphere of being at such an event and the very sensation of seeing with your own eyes Vettel or whoever smash a pole lap. I don't agree with telling people to avoid Saturday and Sunday - this is what you are really paying for! I want to see and hear the whole weekend in person, this is why I am paying such an inflated fee over a simple BTCC weekend, because its not something that happens very often and because of the greater significance of the event.

The food and drink at Oulton Park is rediculous too, its almost entirely down to them having to pay for the privledge of selling on site (though that doesn't excuse the terrible quality).

While I obviously haven't experienced the GP yet, I can at least relate it to my experiences of concerts/gigs - while seeing Iron Maiden meant I had to sit miles away from the band, in a very hot sweaty room, with varying degrees of sound quality it was still well worth seeing. Just as it was well worth seeing some of the smaller gigs I've been to too, in comparison Blaze Bayley I could stand right in the band's faces, hear the songs perfectly and not suffer other people's sweat (just my own!).
The same applies here, I go to Oulton for different reasons to going to the GP.

Generally speaking though, smaller, cheaper, less popular events are always going to be a far better experience and value for money.

Yes, and I do think that any motorsport fan should do it at least once, I think I just get more out of the smaller events.

I may have had a bad experience to be fair, I have a friend that enjoyed the '07 GP from the BRDC clubhouse and had a very good time,...
