So what do you guys think?? I am in love. I havent even gotten to try the multiplayer yet, but the single player is awesome so far.

Well there be a demo for this on PSN? I would really like to try it out first!

As long as has mouthwateringly good visuals and does the PS3 justice then im happy! :)

Yes there is supposed to be a demo out thursday. Trust me, it has mouthwateringly good visuals and does the ps3 justice. And it supports 1080p at 60fps.

Niiice! looking forward to the demo :)👍... wow and full HD @ 60FPS!

Yeah .. I played for a few hours and man .. CoD4 is awesome. I gotta get used to FPS on consoles now though.

So after reading a number of reviews I'm still unclear if the online modes support teammate voice chat or not? And if not, how is coordination accomplished in the team based modes?

Yea CoD4's voice chat is very good. Almost everyone uses a headset. It is the most satisfying online game I have ever played. The upgrade system, the perks, it all just works so well. Its truly an amazing game.

I've been playing it for a while tonight..... It's got a fun factor for sure.

So this "auto-aim" feature, is it offline mode only or can it be used online? If it can be used online is there a way for a host to disable it for any specific game?

Related question - as I am most definitely a noob to this series (and really haven't played too many FPS's either), what would the veterans recommend for skill development in single player - auto-aim off or on?

Man, now i really want a ps3.
but i know that the exams in December will go down the drain if i buy one now.

Ive heard that there is a PSN demo coming, afew GTP'ers have confirmed that but I haven't seen anything official...

IS THERE REALLY A DEMO COMING? so I can try it... love it and then go strait out and buy it!... I really need to play it a bit first eventhough its a sure buy.

Surely if would have been announced by now if there was one??!!

It reminds be of the first two Call of Duty games. What was up with COD3, what a waste!

Graphics are pretty good, reminds me a little of Ghost Recon but with a Call of Duty feel. Someone told be this was going to be shooter of the year...., yeah, don't think so but it is fun.

Can anyone compare and contrast CoD4's online modes versus SOCOM?

Basically I have a buddy who's played a bunch of SOCOM and is concerned that CoD's online experience is going to be annoying in comparison. It seems he is mostly concerned that the online mode is geared towards the dedicated player vs the casual player. I guess in SOCOM everyone has access to all the weapons/modifiers and only the difference is one's initial choice to loadout. As I haven't played either I really don't have much to add for him, but I thought some of you guys might know better and be able to help me help him. :)

Well CoD4's online system is amazing. The upgrade system is sooo good. It just works very well. Not to mention the Create a class and perks. You really have to play it to realize how great it is.

@Pako, why do you think this game isnt a contender for Shooter of the year? It certainly is for game of the year. Other than Halo 3 of course.

I just haven't seen or experienced anything that really WOW'ed me. Seems like Call of Duty with a GRAW theme. Environmental interaction is pretty weak compared to games that have been on the market for a while. Although the Character models are nice, the environment seems too.....'rounded', meaning too smooth and clay like. Realistic textures seem to be missing. I've only got about 4 hours into it, but that's my first reaction. Nothing to concrete, just nothing that really caught me off guard as 'That was AWESOME!!!'.

Does it have split-screen online for the PS3?

NO, one of my frustrations. The reason I bought it for the PS3 and not the PC is the multiplayer aspect. You can only do a 1-4 player split screen deathmatch etc... LAN play may be different, online is single player only. :grumpy:

For those interested, GameTrailers has posted several new videos for COD4, including a nicely done 9-min video review of the game:
  • Review HD
Infinity Ward's first shooter set in present day is a looker, but is it a keeper as well?
As far as a score they gave COD4:
  • 8.0 Story
  • 9.4 Design
  • 9.1 Gameplay
  • 9.8 Presentation
  • 9.4 Overall

In addition, here are some other recent videos for COD4 that might interest others:

And more spoof reviews from "colorful" World Leaders:

Bummer.

I have most of the SOCOM games and this is my first Call of Duty game, you can definately tell the difference in online type, in Socom you go around looking for different settings, for example a snipers only. In CoD4, it is more like everything. If he doesnt like to earn level ups to get guns opposed to SOCOM, where you only unlock special weapons from finishing the game on different difficulties, in CoD4 you level up as you play and it goes by pretty quickly and the weapons are decent at the beginning.

Had my first, "Well that was different...." moment. Had an AI peaking out through a closed door. Once he knew I was in the hallway, he hid behind the door flailing his gun around down the hallway hoping to hit something.

It was kind of neat.

Thanks for the input, I'll definitely forward it to him. 👍

As for me, I couldn't resist given all the stellar reviews and decided to take the plunge. Although I know Warhawk is a fantastic online game, I really like having an offline, SP mode to sharpen my teeth on.

My initial thoughts (hopefully the scattered shot nature of these isn't too hard to follow):
* The manual does truly suck. No other way to put it 👎
* The graphics are quite nice and the framerate, so far, has been consistently fast. I can only assume those who claim it is 60fps are right as I don't have the means to prove yay or nay. Regardless of the specific frame rate #, it sure ain't choppy ;) And it does look great, but seeing as it seems to be 720p native it'd more than likely look better on a fixed pixel display. I've noticed with other material, like movie trailers that 720p scaling to my 960i CRT just does not look quite as clean as 1080P scaling down to 960i. No complaints here, I love my TV, just making an observation.
* My 3rd attempt at the training mode netted me a 38sec completion time (a good time is probably like 25sec). So yes I went ahead and took the suggestion that the recruit/noob difficulty would be an appropriate place for me to start. :D Yeah it is gonna take me some time to get used to the controls, much less become adept at them. But hey, that's why learning is fun right?
* The general atmosphere is very well done. Sound effects are crisp and well localized, as are voices. The first time I heard a fast mover scream across my head I got shivers, pretty dang cool anytime something can force that reaction. The only issue I had in the first mission was hearing the captain's orders over all the ambient sound effects. I may have to double check and make sure my receiver's output levels to the speakers is still calibrated evenly. Then again maybe that's exactly what they intended, the inherent confusion associated with the chaos of battle.
* The auto disappearing HUD is kinda annoying. After shooting your way through enemies for a good 30 seconds I don't always remember to immediately check the remaiing round count in the gun. Then when I do think about it I look to the HUD but it has disappeared. Then instead of paying attention to whom I'm following, where they are going and where threats might pop up from I'm considering if I should reload for the heck of it or switch weapons twice real quick to get the HUD to pop up, orrrr... THEN "blamo" enemy gun fire and I'm all out of sorts. I'm guess reloading is something I'll just naturally acquire with experience, but right now I'm not very efficient at it.
* Although I'm no FPS hound, I do really dig the immersiveness of this game. I guess for FPS I pretty much need a realistic setting to draw me in and make me give a rat's behind. Fortunately this game seems to have that in spades :D
* INTENSE are the battles. Probably upwards of 30 troops on screen active in the battle with bullets, RPG's and grenades flying every which direction, the feeling of imminent danger, the fear of mistaking a team mate for the enemy when strafing (not only ethically, but killing friendlies = respawn) and the afore mentioned helos and jets criss-crossing overhead. INTENSE I say again.
* I'll be staying away from the online mode for awhile. There's some killaz out there and I ain't one of'em, yet.

(PS I did turn off the auto aim assist, so at least I'm not leaning on that crutch ;))

See, the game is truly a great one. I have found no problem with textures, and every level seems to have the detail. And I have had a few "wow" moments. The first one was when infiltrating that cargo ship, we went into the barracks and found some guys sleeping. The squad leader didnt hesitate at all to kill them before they woke up. Thats just something that Ive never seen in video games. Thats realistic. The second one is after the nuke goes off. You guys will see if you haven't gotten to that part yet.

I cannot stress enough how fun and addictive the multiplayer is. Its just so good. The only complaint I have about it is how long it takes to join a game. But once you do, you can stay in there as long as the host keeps the game up. One of my favorite setups so far is the "Saw" gun, with the deeper wall penetration perk. That gun is already great at shooting guys through walls, but with that perk, you can just unload on an entire room, and youre pretty much guaranteed to hit someone.

I've been playing it....well most of the evening. Yeah, it's pretty fun. The sniper level was really cool, I think my favorite so far. Off to bed now.

Well GameSpot has put together a CoD4 "Primer". Although pretty bare bones at this point it is still worth checking out given the pathetic nature of the included game manual. IMHO probably the most useful information are more detailed explanations of, and recommendations on, the game's multiplayer perks.

Anyway here's the link GS CoD4 Primer.

Well, CoD4. I have it and it certainly looks good and plays very well. But God, I do wish they'd shut up in the single player game. It is so irritating to hear the same phrases again and again and again. I know where they are because they're shooting at me! "Pick up the Javelin to take out the Tanks!". I know, shut up! I don't need to be hand-held to get through the level. It really irks me.

The sound effects are good though and it's very, very smooth. However some of the sounds are from earlier CoD games such as the tinkling sound of grenades thrown at you (which are far too accurate).
I would have liked to customise my controls, but generally they're okay.

I have no idea what's going on in the story but I'm only at the last level in Act I. Not that I care really, it seems a fairly reactionary piece of gung-ho nonsense.
I would like to see more stealthy levels later on.

Not tried multiplayer yet but I'm sure it'll be a blast.
