The only PS3 games where hard drive speed usually makes a noticeable difference are the ones that load everything at the start (GTA IV for example). Something like GT5, which only loads relatively small amounts of data, probably wouldn't benefit that much even from an SSD, let alone a 7200 RPM HDD.

Like you said, it will make a difference, but maybe not as much as some people expect. Here is a good read on it.

Almost 10 seconds off the install time. About 10% increase in speed.

Again, about 10 seconds off install time. And about 8% increase in speed.

Almost 40 seconds off it's install time. Coming in at a nice 16% increase in speed.

This one had 4 seconds shaved off. Not as good, but still about 5% increase in speed.

All said. The installs averaged about a 9 - 10% increase in speed. Not bad really.

Now let's look at a file transfer. Although it still has the USB bottleneck of 480Mb/s and I am aware of this bottleneck. The results were different. I tested this with an external 7200rpm HDD.

188MB file transfer
5400rpm - 16.316
7200rpm - 14.882
That was 1.5 seconds off the transfer rate. Coming in at about 9% increase in speed. Again. This is not a bad increase in speed.


Moving along to game loading times. I used 2 Demos and 1 full game for this part.

Jericho level load
5400rpm - 17.417
7200rpm - 16.650
Shaved off almost a second. With almost 5% increase in speed.

Tony Hawk startup load
5400rpm - 18.285
7200rpm - 17.351
Same, almost one second off load time and about 5% increase in speed.

Now this last test I used Oblivion since it keeps a large amount of data on the HDD. This is a good way of seeing how games might act if future games incorporate the same abilities. I did 3 loading tests on this one.

Just over 2 seconds off loading time. Close to 10% increase.

2nd load (map change)
5400rpm - 10.244
7200rpm - 09.543
Almost a second off load time. But a 7% increase in speed.

3rd load (another map change)
5400rpm - 12.479
7200rpm - 10.110
That one was nice at almost 2.5 seconds off. And a wopping 19% increase in speed.

Personally, I use a 7.2k, but it really depends on what prices you see.

Yeah, but when you're talking only a one or two second difference, most people wouldn't even notice if they weren't timing it.

I don't mind the install. I'll probably do it just to alleviate the load on the Blu-ray drive, I've got room to spare (new 120GB Slim).

Well, maybe. It depends on how optimized the game is. If the install is optional, I'm guessing PD would have set the game up so the menus are all preloaded when you enter a section.

Meh, any fractions of a second saved on going from menu to menu will be totally wiped out by your time spent deciding what to do when you get there.

It's one of the things that is quite amusing about today's tech. Sure, my mates fully loaded PC loads MS Word a bit faster than my laptop. However, mine still takes less than a couple of seconds to open, so does it really matter?

Still, people will want something extra to boast about despite it actually having zero impact on quality of life or the game itself. If it halved the loading times, fair enough, but a second or two here or there...I have way more important things in life to worry about!

The time spent doing the initial hd install I will be doing the licence tests, my ps3 has gone ylod 4 times now so i'm just waiting to see what gt5 console bundles or hopefully a special edition like the blue one will be available before i upgrade to a 250slim.

They run hotter though, so it may void your warranty. Sony recommends only 5400 rpm disks.

I really hope there is an option to install the whole/most of the game on HD. Imagine you're racing a 24 hr race on the ring and the race track has to be dumped/loaded from/into limited RAM depending on where you are on it for that time. That's a lot of wear and tear on the blue ray drive.

I wonder if 10 GB is the biggest install option, or if there will be options for larger installations. I'd gladly dedicate 20+ GB to GT5.

I would like to upgrade to a 6GB/s and 7200RPM, only if it does something. if it does have a performance upgrade... I will undoubtly. If it does work out and overheating is the problem, would an intercooler help?

SSD is what I was thinking of picking up around GT5. Having looked at some comparisons though, I don't think I'll go through with it. The positives, marginal load time reduction(depending on game) don't outweigh the cons which are price and limited storage. I had a 60gb in my PS3 and it eventually became not enough, and I had zero music and movies on it.
Lemme know how it works out for you. I might change my mind.

Installing the whole thing to the HDD, that's not too much to ask at all - every 360 game can be installed so why not? However, it would need the disc in for validation purposes.

(assuming this is a single layer disc) so we would have to install 25gb's of data to our HDD's of course, for people who can spare that amount of space, then it is no problem, but for the older PS3's with smaller HDD's then this could be an issue, but it would be awesome as an option!

Well yeah, the option for anybody to install any anything is dependant on the amount of space they have. I'd happily welcome the option to install the full 25 or 50GB to the HDD
