What do you expect the Power Pack DLC will cost?

One for example, buy parts for a car. You get to see power/weight ratio. But not in settings page. So if you’re tuning cars to match, you’re jumping between different areas just to get that info.

Oh yeah, this one really gets me.

Especially given the way that Custom Races are set out. Potentially the best feature in the game, and it's more hamstrung than a Premier League footballer.

I always thinking if the championchips counts as a race or does each race in that championchip count as one of those 50 events. Its not quite clear yet. If each championchip counts as one event that would mean an insane amount of content. If it dosent the championchips is proaply very short if the dlc going to cover 20 different categorys for 50 events.

But regardless this is going to make gt7 a completly different beast

You’re not understanding what I’m saying… you keep trying to link DLC to the free content updates when they’re different things.

Spec 3 = free content for everyone.
Power Pack = optional PS5-only DLC.

Development still occurs whether 0 DLC’s or a thousand DLC’s are sold.

Don’t put words in my mouth when you can’t put two and two together.

Edit: You don’t own the game(self admitted), you haven’t bought into the update cycle/content delivery you’re criticising, you’re still insisting the paid PS5 DLC is secretly funding the free PS4 update.

That’s not how the game works, and it’s not how development works. You’re connecting dots that aren’t connected.
I feel like this was already explained pretty well, but in the end Spec 3 is going to cost PD money, an the Power Pack is going to generate money. I feel like I'm quite literally putting two and two together.

And again, "Paid DLC funds ongoing development", direct quote. Development includes content no matter how you spin it. If there's some scenario where this DLC doesn't sell well (unlikely), then get ready to pay for content directly.

And lastly, I've owned the PS4 version for months now. That may have been an acurate statement in May, but it's not May anymore.

You’re still not putting two and two together, you’re adding unrelated numbers and insisting it makes a pattern.

Spec 3 is shipping to PS4 players who cannot buy the DLC. That alone proves the DLC isn’t funding the update.

“Paid DLC funds ongoing development” = long-term studio revenue, this is true but it also gets sponsorships, endorsement deals etc, set budgets every year from SIE to pay for the lights to be turned on, not just reliant on DLC revenue. It does not mean every DLC is secretly paying for every free update. If money was the end goal it would of been available to more platforms and or non optional. That’s your misunderstanding, not my statement. Trying to switch the argument from no free dlc to oh need money to switch the lights on just shows you moving goal posts by being vague to try win an argument.

You owning the PS4 version now doesn’t change how wrong the conclusion is.

There's been two occasions this series has cut things down to the bare minimum content wise (GT3 and GT Sport).

Both times, rally has survived what were drastic culls. PD absolutely see it as core series content (not that you'd know that from the physics, admittedly!) and aren't ever cutting it.
Needs a major overhaul if they decide to keep it around.

There's that misconception again, that if you just throw money at PD they'll be able to scan cars & circuits quicker or obtain unicorn brand licences.

It reminds me of people who try and negotiate how long their food will take to cook by offering to pay more.
I'd be willing to bet if the sale of DLC goes well, Sony would be willing to spend more money on X product. Whether it's a track or a car brand, but only if they see the value it would return.

Fresh ideas.. from 2020. I think Kaz has long ago argumented these choises as "handicaps" to even out the driver performance in different views. Yes I know it sounds weird, but its PDI.

Maybe they could just finally give us settings for views, mirrors etc as any other racing game has. (Almost wrote "sims" there, but that would have started an unnecessary debate..😅)
This shows that Kaz has beyond aged out of the industry. This is the kind of stubbornness that doesn't just come from old age. It's indicative of something else. I just don't know what.

Ongoing development includes content.

It's the other side of an earler argument: while the content updates are "free", one way or another we're paying for them. PS4 users don't have the opportunity to pay, but also subsiquently lose out on features. We keep talking about how expensive new content is, they had to offset 2 new F1 tracks and a GT3 car somehow. Ultimately I'm just pointing out that the 'Free' content stuff is a bit of a mirage.
Not this again.

Far from it.

GT is the result of important choices within the production triangle. You have TIME, QUALITY, and MONEY. Often people say "pick two" but it's more about balance. You balance based on priority. With GT, they place QUALITY at the top. A high quality experience, for as many people as possible.

People on this forum talk about the minutia of choices (like "can I move the mirror"). It's simply not on the radar. That TIME will be spent on other features that have the most impact for the most people.

Also, and this is an important component to any discussion with products from Japan, since the 1990 Nikkei collapse Japan has been in recovery mode with limited investment. We talk about inflation since the pandemic, but Japan's consumer prices have been in a relative flatline since 1998. In other words, the 1990 Nikkei collapse (and it preceding bubble) was so bad that Japan still hasn't recovered. MONEY becomes tighter with each passing year, which is why the Japanese try to get as much mileage out of assets a they can (hence why GT has so many cars that are reused/reworked since GT5). This is also why Nintendo uses last gen hardware for their most current consoles. Look at Japanese products across the board, innovation has been replaced by repurposing. They've been coasting for decades through necessity. (BTW, I attached the SPI charts for Japan, the US, and the UK so you can see the stark contrast)

And yet, Sony and PD still deliver one of the best all around driving games in history.

I feel like everyone keeps forgetting how far along we are with GT7 - It's 3.5 years. The gap between GT7 and GT8 looks like it will be the longest gap between titles in the history of the franchise. The Power Pack is very much in place to fill the gap. People think there will be more "paid content". I disagree. I believe we will see more Power Pack content. I expect that future updates will expand upon the Power Pack, essentially making it GT 7.5. Rather than making more paid content, they'll drive more people to the Power Pack.

I appreciate the knowledge. There is a lot to love about the game and series. I've played them all a ton. But to not have a FOV adjustment, and some other QoL "features", which is primarily what my post was about - well, I don't think that has anything to do with Japan's economy, past or present. It's such a simple thing.

And beyond not having some "simple" features, there are also many examples of inconsistencies on how existing features are used through the game, like the typing UI which does NOT provide the same functionnalities all through the game

I've been playing Battlefield 6 lately. On console. There is quite a fair amount of customization with the game - FoV, HUD. Sony games lately put a lot of thought into accessibility - take a look at The Last of Us games, for instance. But that's not something PD cares an iota about, it seems.

I don't understand, and I don't think I ever will, no matter how many NHK videos I watch, why GT has never bothered with such things. Especially when Kaz's reasoning for the mirror issue is a matter of balance. Has no one at the team tried to change his mind? Is that even allowed?

I once read here that Kaz doesn't play other racing games. Have you ever heard of a musician who doesn't listen to music? A painter who doesn't look at others' artwork?

*Edited "NHL" to NHK.

Well, as a returning player to GT, past experience informed me that I was buying into an "author's" game, with all the good and bad that can come with it. So far it has been a very accessible and good-to-great experience but with some head scratching design decisions that strictly speaking do not have a direct impact on the gameplay itself: mainly the economy and availability of cars locked by arbitrary settings (which would be easily fixable).

Very glad for some of the features the DLC is introducing, very disappointed I can't buy it because I only have a PS4.

You'd be surprised. The game has had some of these features in the past, and they've been dropped because of broad apathy. Remember when we had three screen support? Super cool but used by almost no one.

Some features are useful to some people, while other features are useful to most people. For instance, FOV adjustment, in nearly 30 years of playing this game I never once cared to change the FOV.

If you have a game play programmer with a laundry list of items to work on, the items that are most in demand and that will be used by the majority of the users, will be at the top of the list. Why don't the hire another programmer or two? THAT is where the economy part comes in. They will try to get the most bang out of every penny that they have. They'll keep the team as lean as possible to maintain the utmost quality with the least amount of cost.

Apples and oranges. EA gives Battlefield several global studios and it still took them YEARS to get BF6 right. EA sell software only. Sony is trying to sell the hardware, and GT is part of that.

I don't blame him. I've tried these "other racing games" and have come away disappointed by all of them.

the #1 and #2 best selling racing games are Mario Kart and Need For Speed. GT is #3. I don't want GT to become like MK or NFS, and as a controller player, I ABSOLUTLEY do not want it to become like many of the other sim racers, which are absolutely HORRENDOUS experiences.

I always come back to this forum because I play THIS GAME. I see lurkers who like other games come to this forum, and they're here because no one is talking about those other games. Look at the number of messages about the Gran Turismo series compared to any of the others!! Gran Turismo has 7.8 MILLION messages. Console and PC gaming is second with 646,000. That's less than 10%. So, I am going to hazard to guess, that they're making good choices. I question them often as well, but the proof is in the longevity.

It was also entirely your idea to bring up something I said 6 months ago. In all honesty I don't think anything I've said here required owning GT7 to say it, but the constant need to discredit what I'm saying instead of responding with any real substance, and the fact that you're so hype you have to go back and edit all of your responses speaks for itself. I'm just talking about a video game, nothing to get mad about here.

I think GT8 is a lot closer than you think. I'm sure they have fulfilled a nice reserve of cars through the years and we'll be done getting new tracks after Spec 3. GT8 will be nothing more than a complete campaign/UI improvement over GT7 and include a fair amount of cars to boot. There's no reason to keep milking GT7 when you can provide the complete integrated experience on PS5, and provide some late stage sales.

That just goes to show how great of a community @Jordan and the crew have facilitated here. Heck, forzaplanet.net redirects to gtplanet lol. The only viable discussion forum for the leading games IS GTP. But the people who enjoy this game are more passionate in general.

Besides, how would it look if it made the social media that he plays Forza on his XBOX?

Game developers quite often give credit to other studios, other publishers. Phil Spencer does it all the time.

I'm not knowledgeable to speculate but I will anyway.

I've played a fair amount of Japanese games in my time. I find it interesting how Sega studios, for example, reuse assets over the years to maximize efficiency. So I'll give PD some credit for creating all sorts of new assets for GT7, while also reusing a lot of assets. And not innovating on cockpit or bumper or bonnet cam - at all. I guess it's to save money.

But I do wonder, does it really cost more to make a game in Japan than it does to make the same game in, say, California? Labour is far cheaper in Japan, I would think.

SIE is the umbrella company, right? Polyphony is under them, same as Naughty Dog. If someone could make it clearer to me how little old PD is struggling to add a time delta thing to the VR headset, I'd appreciate it because I still don't completely get it, even after Voodoo's attempts to break it down for me.

With this example, I mean, have you seen how Sony have been treating the VR2 in the last year?

You could tell me there's an edict from above not to spend another yen on anything to do with VR and I'd believe it.

First of PS5 is five years old all the "why not PS4" just get over it and look how much did you pay for your mobile phone and how long are you using it.

Second I did complain myself over PD/Kaz being out of touch and so on.
But after playing most racing/sim games in last two years and the lack of quality and polish in them I'll gladly pay for the dlc (not to mention all those free updates)!

You’re still trying to turn a general statement about PD revenue into proof of a direct funding link that doesn’t exist. Pointing out that you originally hadn’t bought the game wasn’t “discrediting” you it was highlighting that you were making claims on which you hadn’t experienced. You’ve since corrected that, fine. It still doesn’t fix the flaw in your argument. That argument is that free updates aren’t free and the DLC is funding the free updates.

Yes, companies need money.
No, that doesn’t mean this DLC paid for this update.

You’re connecting two unrelated things because they launched on the same day, I’m done with you before you’re the cause of another thread to be locked due to your ridiculous application of logic.

Im not convinced any of the updates were free in the first place. They talk about how long it takes to scan cars and tracks. I think in a way it was all content that was started but just not finished in time for release. It makes sense to release that as “free”.

We all bought the game. If the game didn’t have the updates it would have fallen quite short of what a lot of people expected from it.

Not sure DLC is funding any “free” content. But as I said that free content could very well have just been held back in the first place.

To me it makes no sense to release a game and then continue to work on after the fact. Why not throw it all at the game and then release it and move on? I might be missing something there but to sell a product and then have to continually cater to your customers in a way doing warranty work continually seems odd. Better off just doing the job right in the first place no?
