I tried this out for a while at a game shop. The DS@ was very hard to use with the game, but it was actually pretty fun. I expected it to be horrible.

As for the AI and difficulty, I just jumped into an unknown track for about 10 laps (imola), I wasnt fast enough to see how the game was when you are running up front with the other cars. I bet this is where the game dissapoints. GP4 has the advantage here.

As for physics, graphics and everything else, they were pretty good from what I remember.

Yeah - it's definitely the pick of the PS2 grand prix games. The AI's pretty impressive - it blocks and tries feint moves, and if you're on the pace won't generally try silly moves in wrong places - I had one of the McLarens following me at Albert Park actually drop back a couple of car lengths, and when I wasn't looking he got a really got run on my coming out of the last right hander on to Pit Straight and got enough speed up to get me before the right-left first corner.

It looks pretty good, although they've been a bit sneaky how they've done it - the cars are very generic until they're quite close to you, it's not until you're within 5 or 6 car lengths that you can actually make out what car it is. When they're close, they look fantastic. Scenery's pretty good too.

So - is it better than GP3 on a good PC updated to 2003 cars and tracks?

Ahhh....no. No it isn't.
