Gran Turismo 5 “Major Advancement” Coming at TGS

Kazunori-Yamauchi-gamescom

Mere seconds after the throngs of GT fans gobbled up the news off the GamesCom show floor, eyes began to turn to the upcoming Tokyo Game Show for the next flood of Gran Turismo 5 info from Polyphony Digital. Today, we can tell you that excitement is not misplaced, as Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed a “major advancement” is coming to the show later this month. From his latest interview with G4TV:

G4: What are your plans for Tokyo Game Show?

Yamauchi: At E3, we showed a concept video and this time at Games-Com, we have a playable demo with damage, and I think you can expect a similar major advancement at TGS.

The full interview is definitely worth the read, though the interviewer seems pretty hung up on GT PSP’s development time. Mark your calendars – TGS begins September 24 – and we’ll have full coverage of everything GT at the show, right here on GTPlanet.

Thanks to Alexandre for the heads-up!

If the release date is revealed at TGS, I’ll s*** my pants in excitement. I’ve been waiting for YEARS to even get a ps3, have one now, and STILL have to wait.

  2. The Masfer

Major advancement will be either weather, day and night cycle or release date.

All would be good though anything else is just a bonus.

  3. aleksandar SRB

PORSCHE NOT COMING IN GRAN TURISMO 5!!!!! We will have RUF so it”s ok… I just want Mclaren F1 LM and Spa circuit!!!!! :)

  4. Manny12

Its going to be the addition of porsche! :D

Nah, maybe weather changes or a day night cycle. Whatever it is i no it’s going to be exciting!!!!!!

  5. aleksandar SRB

    @ Canadian STIG
Don”t worry we will have cockpit view all car, in prologue have cockpit view so relax and be cool… I would like to drive Viper STR-10 or Viper ACR on Laguna Seca licence test because Viper GTS is little old car…

  6. Canadian STIG

    @ aleksandar

I’m with you! The Viper GTS Laguna Seca license was brilliant! The only bonus I want are the cockpit views, again thats just me. I’m sure this game’ll still be exceptional.
    PSN ID: oooSTIGooo

  7. aleksandar SRB

I think that game will be awesome. If we just get same game as prologue with 1000 cars and 80 circuit I”ll be happy!!!! Other thinks like damage, weather changes , day night race are just bonus for me!!! I wont to play traditional GTmode and my favorite licence test with Dodge Viper on Laguna seca…

I am getting less and less confident about what is going to come out of GT5… I really get the feeling that KY was just plodding along at his own pace with a sort of “We are PD, we do what we want when we want” and was attacking all fronts at once figuring he would get there when he got there. Then suddnely Sony said “Get that friggin game out!” and now KY has to rush. He has a dozen aspects 70% complete and he can’t say much because he is rushing each one and whateve can be done decently will make the cut and what can’t won’t.

    So something like:

NASCAR tracks: Well we got 60% fully done, the rest will take 4 more months if we totally rush it, 7 month if we take our time and do it right. Result KY says rush it.

Damage: We are 70% there but only on the cars we used to test our damage model on, it’s gonna take 3 more montsh to do just race cars and 10 more months to do them all. Result KY says do race car.

Day night racing: We are 50% of the way there, we think we know where we need to go and we can try to hit 3 months but if we hit snags, who knows how long. Result: KY says you have 3 months, if it looks decent by then we go with it, if not, it gets cut.

That sort of thing (I just made up time frames and subjects to illustrate the point). That’s why he can’t be more specific, that’s why there are so few details, and that’s why I am so worried…

  9. Driver

yeah all the 1000 cars with full cockpitvieuw headtracking and full damage and hopefully the extra`s weather day night cycle Full tuning intern extern visual

  10. Sam__ NY48

All I hope is that GT5 has damage and cockpit views for every car. and oh ya Watkins Glen International, the greatest American Road Course.

I got this info from a Polish website and I translated to english. Thanks to Google!

Limited to the console of Gran Turismo PSP, PS3 Slim Sets Future

… But the most interesting item is a kit designed to hit the stores December 4 – will be 75 thousand PS3s of Gran Turismo 5 sold at a price $ 339. Recall that this is so far the only concrete date, which appears in connection with that title. Sony officially reported only that GT5 will be released later this year, shortly after the PSP version, while the whole world.

Sounds pretty interesting right? December 4 PS3 Slim with GT5! That means that its coming out on that day or even earlier! Awesome

I read all these snippets about GT5 and the raving on about damage etc, and mostly I consider it noise.
But somewhere up above there’s mention of night driving with projected headlights etc.

Now that would be ace. esp if there’s the WRC and night stages…

  13. obi_one

just found this on a polish website about new PS3 bundles it says that a 75K ps3 gt5 bundles are coming on december 4 for 339$ each and they took that news from play3-live site :

“Natomiast na stronie Play3-live pojawił się wpis, w którym ujawnione zostały zestawy PlayStation 3 Slim z grami, które ukazać się mają jeszcze w tym roku. Nie jest to jednak oficjalne oświadczenie pochodzące od Sony. Według źródła serwisu, spodziewać możemy się zestawów z Need For Speed: Shift, Uncharted 2, PES 2010, Tekken 6, Assassin’s Creed 2. Jednak najbardziej interesującą pozycją jest zestaw mający trafić do sklepów 4 grudnia – będzie to 75 tys. “slimów” z Gran Turismo 5 sprzedawanych w cenie 339 dolarów.”

  14. Berlino Bear

To my good friend Caribbeantopdriver, you have me over a barrel there. I cant wait for weather cycles. I was telling the wife all about last night. She was enraptured. She would like to know if the sun visors can filp down and have a mirror thats linked to the PSEye. Have you heard any roumors about that? That would add to the realism and fun.

  15. ralph89

A lot of pointless comment in here. You guys should read “Sifu’s” comment, # 12. That tops them all. This shows how ignorant a lot of Forza fanatics are (Not all) attacking this site and talking bulls^#$. He’s probably got the same I.Q. level as that youtuber PS3 fanatic naming Forza 3 Flopza plastic or w/e. We all know this idiots don’t care about cars, they only cares about which system they own and insult everyone who don’t own the same system as them, retards.

  16. caribbeantopdriver

Dear berlino, your sarcasm holds no water with me. now why r you gonna drop a silly comment like cops running you down on gt5 for? i know if weather cycles can be turn on or off you would always have them on.

  17. Crispy

And yes I realise the contradiction in me saying I can’t wait to play it and then saying I’m prepared to wait til it gets released, but you get what I mean, lol

  18. Crispy

I couldn’t agree with you more Overdriver!! I have absolute faith that Kaz and PD will deliver a game that will leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling in my groinal area when I play it!! I’m not expecting it have all the features that alot of people think it should have as it’s just not possible for the PS3 to process full on realistic weather, day/night cycling, ultra realistic damage and all the other stuff that’s expected by some! I’m sure the PS3 is gonna be pushed to it’s limits as it is!! And I can’t wait to get my hands on it…whenever that may be (I can wait)it’s gonna be fantastic!!

  19. overdriver

@ Crispy: finally someone saying something that’s non senseless… if you look above i said mostly the same things, if i were jordan i would kick 90% of poster’s asses here!

C’mon people, it’s GRAN TURISMO! don’t be such bitches, complaining about a thing you’ll probably suck dick at when it comes out.

  20. bcb

no magicalgin…it was not an encyclopedia, it was a driving game developed for people who enjoy the beauty in cars and enjoy driving aspect of it…not a damn arcade pos like burnout and shit…Polyphony’s games encompass more than anyone else what it is like with motorsports…both aspects of art and driving…i say release what you want to Kaz..it’s your company’s art…i don’t see people telling artist what they should change about their work..just appreciate it for what it is…

  21. Magicalgin

Seems like alot of you forgot what GT actually was to begin with. A car encyclopedia, not a race encyclopedia.

  22. Crispy

I could’ve sworn GTPlanet was a GT fan site…alll I’ve seen is people slating GT5 without having seen the final product and one complete buffoon telling us all how Kaz is a terrible games creator!!! Seriously, if your going to put a comment on here as pointless as the examples I’ve put, please do feel free to keep your opinions to yourself!! Personally I’d like to give a massive thanks to Jordan for sharing the info (no matter how small) with us, although I’m sure looking at alot of comments here, he wonders why he bothers!!

  23. Sam__ NY48

Why’s everyone waiting for PD to announce weather cycles. We already saw weather cycles in 3 trailers already.

-The GT5 concept trailer- top gear test track at dawn (or foggy).

-GT by Citroen Debut Trailer- one night time shot of the GT by Citroen coming over a hill, and a group of Citroens racing at Daytona in the evening.

-E3 2007- the Nissan Fairlady Z, also at night in one shot.

    dont worry people

  24. bcb

bunch of little sissy bed wetters…make a damn game if you think you can do it better…until then stop complaining…and i swear if i hear another gd comment about reverse lights….racing isnt about going in reverse you twits…

  25. AJ_is_Sik

I dont see anyone complaining trying to put effort or the time to become a game developer and try to put the things you say u want and the game.

Im no developer, but its sounds way harder trying to develop all the things people want in GT5 than actually saying it.

Guys can we just appreciate what GT5: The Gran daddy of all racing games, has to offer before jumping to conclusions based on what you saw at Gamescon or what you heard.

TGS will probably show weather effects. Just be patient.

  26. Berlino Bear

It might be that if you go over 70mph the Police are told and they send you a real life speeding ticket. That would fun. It happens in real life driving, so it must be fun when added to a game. ;-)

  27. caribbeantopdriver

where is berino????? i told ya sumthing big is coming…. wait till tgs. probably what the guy above me mentioned.

  28. speedthrill

He sais he’s going to show smth similar in advancement: Trailer (lots off talks off what will be in after it. Alot was about the damage)—> demo playable with the beginning off damage (again alot off talk, kazunori just sits around and listens and reads alot, even asks us the fans about how good the damage should be) —-> Wel i say alot will be shown there on TGS: info like this damage reworked a bit more, weather, tracks, new trailer,…, more cars, a new playable demo?

Think about it. From a little tiny trailer to a nice demo without smth off info inbetween… TGS will blow us away for sure!

  29. Canadian STIG

I hope Mr.Yamauchi’s smile is one of pride and confidence as well as complete satisfaction with what he and his team have done with GT5. That would be reassurance for me.

  30. lars

i dont want a demo, i want to wait for the full game. and what would that major announcement be?? something simular like wrc and nascar? or weather cycle and day and night cycle?

  31. Sam__ NY48

I read the entire interview with KY. the final question

G4- will you announce a release date at the TGS.

KY-(basically said)- our plans and goals our always changing so we cant be certain on a specific release date yet.

    darn

  32. Juniordee

I think it’d be a great time to release a playable demo via PSN. TGS is sept 24, and that’s a thursday (weekly PSN store update). Timing would be perfect.

  33. overdriver

It has to be a pain in the ass being jordan putting so much effort in bringing us information, maintaining in order the site and forums, posting a lot of info and then seeing a bunch of whiners demanding and complaining about everything….

    C’mon people! it’s freakin’ GRAN TURISMO 5!

don’t forget that ps3 is not a supermachine… impossible to have wet cloudy foggy races at night with realistic cosmetic and mechanical damage on 16 cars with their respective set of lights, lighted dashboard, full modeled interiors, with improved IA and all the insane list of things all of you ask in the game, while maintaining 1000 perfectly modeled cars, lots of tracks, lots of modes, lots of options, and so on…..

This is a fan site, seems all of you forgot that… :)

  34. bcb

stop with the reverse lights…do you want turn signals too? how about emergency flashers?…the only thing they should do is make it possible to flash your lights/turn lights on and off…reverse lights are stupid…

  35. Turboteam

Again, bla bla bla…. And saying nothing…if tamagochi was on MY payroll, he didn’t get anything this month, just like us…

  36. Azzer

Why on every GT game are there no reverse lights??? I know it isn’t a big deal but it’s supposed 2 be so realistic, they don,t even do reverse lights??!!!!

  37. Tenacious D

I didn’t expect any GT5 news at Games-Com, so that was very nice. Since TGS is Polyphony’s playground, I expect some substantial information, and at least a stronger hint of a 2009 release.

  38. Robert

Well its all straight from the horses mouth so who cares what it is, it can only be good right ?

i somehow doubt that gt modes will be like psp challenges though given that the gt mode is the major thing in the game

  39. Wilhelm

listen to you guys beg for dust. This smug man has got you content to wish for mere revealing of “features”. I outright demand at the very least… A rELeasE DatE?!?!?!?! Is that so much to ask?!?!?!? What an arrogant tease this “creator” is.

  40. N155AN

“You’ll find that Gran Turismo for PSP is closer to GT5 and it’s a lot different from the history of the GT series that we’ve had over the years”

i hope this doesnt mean GT modes gonna be like the psp challenges etc.

  41. topdrive

I think that day/night is easier to implement than weather, and that is why I believe that this will be shown. But it has some things which have to be implemented because of night – headlights. Projected headlights need some power from the gfx (but you can gain it by shorter view range and less objects fully rendered on track sides, much less visibility backward).
This would be a great feature in GT.

As it comes to weather, I believe that it will be in GT6. I think that making shaders for wet/dry/damp and so on is a lot of work. Please remember that you need them for tracks, cars and people. A lot of code to be written. In day/night it is more fluent and the modification can be somehow automatic (possible to have only three shaders day, night, dusk/dawn and a fluent change can be auto).

I also hope to hear “we will have full WRC season in GT” :P. With many stages to rally on using the WRC cars and tuned cars from the normal stock ones, like the peugot 106, lancers, imprezas, S1600 cars… :) This will be a killer – maybe something which will be as fun as richard burns rally? :)

Nascar will also be nice – if it will be complete. Not complete Nascar will be sad news, although I am not a Nascar fan.

  42. James

I think it’s going to be weather and/or day/night cycle.

Think about it… At Gamescom they confirmed damage. And at TGS they’re gonna be unveiling a similarly major advancement. Oh, what could that major advancement be? Perhaps it’s in the E3 concept video? Anyone remember the dusk?

  43. Sifu

From the way things have been going with the GT series, I highly doubt Kaz will finally “get it” and develope the game correctly. Major Advancement? Give me a break! The game has been in developement for over 5 years now? And the only advancement I’ve seen so far is the graphics. The AI are still retarded and looks like they belong in a PS1 game not a PS3 game. The sound is absolutely asanine and I’m sure the final game will have no changes because PD is too busy concentrating on making the leather stitching perfect on the Ferraris.

Here is Kaz’s definittion of Major Advancement: OMG super omega realistic perfect car graphics!!!!

Everything else will be subpar when compared to other racing games currently out or will be out in the near future. AI will be stupid, Sound will be disappointing, physics will be crap and they still won’t be able to simulate how a RWD car should handle like, collision detection will be just like GT4 because GT5P wasn’t any different than GT4 at all and the same will happen for GT5. Online will be absolutely horrible!

If Turn 10 can get over 400 cars done in 2 years with cockpit views for every single car then PD better have cockpit views for all 1000+ cars in GT. No excuse! Not all cars will have damage due to licensing issue? Bullshit! Turn 10 has damage and rollovers on Ferraris, Lambos and Porsches so there goes that excuse! It may not be realistic damage but it is still damage on EVERY car!

Move over Kaz and let someone who knows what they’re doing do the job! I really hope someone from PD will read this, get pissed and actually kick each other in the butts and start doing it right!

  44. J.P

If they’re going to have the NASCAR licence then surely they’d have to have all the tracks that NASCAR race on!! If they don’t then the licence is wasted…it would be like having a F1 2009 game but with only some of the tracks…pointless!!

  45. Dom

No info there. We all knew that TGS will be the place for GT5. Maybe we get a demo, but the advancments so far are pretty limited if you compare the whole GT series.
It’s time to rethink for PD and Kaz. Making lame “probably/maybe” statements that are not true in the end don’t help.
I hope we will see a dynamic weather system and wet races for GT5, a full realistic Nascar season with most tracks (def. not going to happen) and major improvements with the damage system, as well as tire rubber – finally. We will see if Kaz can deliver, or if he is just talking too much in these days.

  46. Corey

That’s cool how un-informative that was. I know TGS will be huge for GT5 already. I wish the guy would’ve asked better questions about the real problem at hand.

  47. ninja220

“Yamauchi: At E3, we showed a concept video and this time at Games-Com, we have a playable demo with damage, and I think you can expect a similar major advancement at TGS.”

KY says it will be a “similar” advancement. Basicly means that the amount of info we will get at TGS will be the same amount we got at E3 and GamesCom, which wasn’t alot when considering the how big GT5 is.

  48. alba

I’m so pumped, I cannot wait… I wish I could travel forward in time and then come back with all the news right now :D
