Gran Turismo 5’s NA Release Slated for “Summer 2010”

orange-tt

During a Sony press event last week, SCEA Producer Chris Hinojosa was throwing around a “summer 2010” release date for Gran Turismo 5 (presumably for the North American market). The news comes from Destructoid, who had listened carefully during his presentation about the game. While this does open up the release window, an early summer date (some time in May, perhaps?) has been the most reasonable assumption for us to make since the game was announced for March in Japan, so this isn’t anything to get too upset about.

Chris also talked about a rather mysterious mission he’d be carrying out over the next few days: taking “reference photographs” for Polyphony Digital. However, he was kind enough to clarify that his work is “not for Gran Turismo 5 or a DLC release,” and will instead be contributing to the company’s growing “reference archives”…

What about SUV’s and engine swap i want Porsche cayene s with the porsche carrera gt engine in it LIKE IN FORZA and forza like drag races

  2. luis

so I was randomly searching on the gamestop website and I’ve notice they have a release date for gran turismo, and its feb.02,2010. They even have a pre-order available. How true can u think this is?

  3. Craig

I doubt that there will be much of a delay between the NA and EU releases. After all (in terms of sales at least) GT is much more popular in the EU than NA. Besides, I can always import an NA copy if the wait is too long.

  4. NickHa

I doubt it will be out before November next year…GT5 prologue came out over 2 years ago buy that time. Honestly, if the new F1 game is any good….it’ll already have a much better tracklist, so prob wont have a need to get GT5 then.

  5. RS

Its purely for marketing reasons, not translations. But judging from releases of other games it will either be early summer/late spring or fall, games are never released in the middle of the summer.

  6. JAGUAR1977

Don’t get your hopes up, ‘summer 2010’ will mean late July/August, at which stage Sony marketing team may just say, let’s delay it until Christmas, GT fans are mugs, they’ll wait.

  7. mk1992

what are you all chit-chatting about translation, has nobody got a english version of GT5P then?
It’s 99% the same as the full game, so I’m willing to do some volunteer copy and pasting if that shortens the release

amazon claims it’ll be released in Q2, thats before the 1st of july. So I’m sure it’ll be in my hands before the summer holidays!

  8. Luke

The people at PD spend 5 years developing the best racing game ever for you, right now there are nearly working 24/7, even sleeping at PD studio. And most of you get pissed.
I`m pretty sure translation is already done by one trainee 2 years ago. And Kaz once said he is only responsible for creating the game, not selling it, so PD has nothing to do with when or where the game will be released, you can`t really believe NA and EU will have to wait another 6 months for a racing game beeing “translated”.
And if you can`t wait import it, but don`t bitch about Sony only wanting to make money, doesn`t make any sense if you cry about it and buy GT5 twice.

  9. S3 Racer

    1. This is a damn rumor

    2. Working in marketing i can assure you this is not because they want you to import it. Imports are so little compared to what it really sales(>1%). So this is not the reason. PLus that’s your choice to buy a game twice, they don’t care!!

    3. a lot of games are like that (FF13?15?, Ninja Sigma,………..)

    4. You get it when they want. If they don’t release it at all. That’s up to them and their choice

5.Get a life. 5 months pass on. Play other games, take a good f*** ,… what ever

    6. When it’s there you will flush red because of all the unnessecary complaining.

7+8+9 …. It’s done when it’s done (Duke nukem forever)!!!!!!!

  10. Rama

GT Player “If it’s not released in Europe by 31 May 2010, I will refuse to buy it”.
Sony Corp “Oh, yes you will still buy it”.
    “Oh, no I won’t”
    “Oh, yes you will”
    “Oh, no I won’t”
    “Oh, yes you will”
    “Oh, no I won’t”
    “Oh, no you won’t”
    “Oh, yes I will”. Bugger.

  11. Wizard Hat

Hmmm I wonder if the ps3 will see another GT after GT5?
I will continue to wait, as I have an actual race car I can build and drive. I can’t believe that it’s been almost 15 years for the GT series. I hope the rally in gt5 can replace Richard Burns Rally (the only driving game I have played in 2 years). I’ll be pissed if the low speed physics are shit again. Please have Seattle and deep forest and cittra d’aria. Peace.

  12. Gar

Not sure how accurate Target is. Actually, not many retailers are that accurate when it comes to release dates… but I was at Target the other day and they have those little preorder cards by their video games. The card for GT5 says its release date was March 30th, 2010. Maybe the release date is still set for March? Doesn’t seem right for the consumer if Target continues selling those preorder cards and leaving them there when 3-30-2010 is specifically printed on them.

  13. david

honestly speculation as to when it’s release date is stupid and if you buy into the unofficial release dates and bitch and bitch when another unofficial release date comes out…then you just like being pissed off. Either way Day 1 buy for me and i can wait since there are so many games being released.

  14. Keitaro333

i just dont get why everyone is so surprised, we knew its 31th march in Japan and sometime later in the other countries. We waited few months for GT5P so i’d assume it will be similar with GT5.

  15. MitsuStigi

I’ve heard there wouldn’t be a Japanese release, but rather an “International” release, wherein you can just select the language that you like… :) :) :)

  16. twinspark24

Translation has nothing to do with the delay. Do you think that PD will start translating the game ONLY AFTER it’s released in japanese? and what is there to translate?- “single race”, “multiplayer” and all the tuning menus that have been present for years now?

I am begining to think the reason for delay is that “we are PD, it’s natural to keep our fans waiting because we can do it and they will buy the game anyway”

And watching all the videos, this damage is totally not worth it…How come doors that refuse to close take 5 years to put in a game? This “we will release tha game only when it’s finished” is becomming a complete joke, KY!

  17. tyl0r_r

The comments treating PD and Sony like evil demons are a bit much. Early 2010 has probably got the most insane video game line up of all time. God of War 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Bioshock 2, MAG, and a big pool of other GOTY contenders are all coming out in Feb through May. I very highly doiubt we’ll see GT5 in North America until at least June or July and to be completely honest I can see it releasing for the Christmas season 2010. I just really really hope this doesn’t happen. Now the only question I have is that if I import it what kind of online functionality will I get…

  18. setwave

Actually, the quote doesn’t mention early summer so it could be until the end of summer which is about September 21st 2010.

  19. yeti

Well – the Marketing boys get it right again…

Suitably late for people to import from Japan – and then buy again when it releases in English…

4 weeks wouldn’t be enough – but 2/3 months is too long for people to import it…

Either way – I just hope it hurrys the fuck up.

    C.

  20. Nixo

stop whining guys and go get an xbox and forza3 for now.. it sucks compared to gt but hey.. nothing else now? and when the gt5 jpn version comes out buy that and then your own region version when that comes out. :)

  21. Turbo_3800

Lol seriously why are people getting this upset over a game! We all wanted this game pretty much after we heard PD was making this game for PS3 (of course they were). No need to get pissed, it’s not gonna make it get here any faster besides you might be pissed till it hit shelves lol. It’ll be a great game worth the wait, so be sure to juice up Prologue around the spring to get your skills back up to par cause I’m quite sure most of you stopped playing along time ago LMAO!

  22. Marky5244

I will be very frustated if the EU release is delayed for marketing reasons – the only reason I bought a PS3 was to play GT5…

  23. meatbag_

i dont think its likely. the US is one market and the EU is several small ones, its probably easier to coordinate the US launch than the EU one. probably

  24. meatbag_

something to consider: as far as i know NOTHING s released worldwide on a disc media. NOTHING. as i understand it theres just not a sufficient volume of factory output to create enough copies for worldwide release. consider too that the 2layer Blu-Ray media is probably also in short supply as it is the newest of the disc formats. i wonder how many factories are geared to mass produce dual layer Blu-Ray discs? Staggered releases make more sense logistically. It allows them to better track regional reception and allows them to ‘phase-in’ the online servers. much better for the online community to get the servers stable at say, 30% load then 60 then 90, ratehr than go to full capacity over a weekend, this way if there is a weakpoint it can be isolated and dealt with causing minimal interruption for users. i’m sure there are a host of other reasons too but this is just off the top of my head.

  25. R53freak

I was expecting to hear something like this so why don’t we say Christmas 2010 to round off next year so we don’t too disappointed about the release date?

  26. Rama

I’m taking it with a pinch of salt. Who is this guy and what authority does he have to make such comments? We’ve had Sony executives making “unofficial” statements about the release date before. They should keep their mouths shut until the actual release date is formally announced.

  27. Dom

“This is honestly getting out of hand.”
I totally agree. PD and or Sony try everything to kill their No.1 franchise. Translation is simply not an acceptable reason to delay it further. Given the development time of GT5, a world-wide release (at least within 2-3 weeks) is a MUST. Seriously, my frustration level is already overclocked to the maximum.
I really hope Kaz, PD and Sony will learn from this disaster. I still want GT5 and I still value their passion for cars and racing in general, but if they really think that the (more or less simple) translation process can be started after the japanese release, something is going terrible wrong. As said before, some people need more fresh air, or to say it with John Cleese, they lack some ‘fresh fruit’.
I hope this comment wont be deleted again, because it’s not overly enthusiastic. I’m a die hard racing fan and GT slave/aficionado. I love the games, but they need to rethink the surrounding parameters.

  28. tameem

remember guys KAZ said ” i promise you that all versions will be finished at the same time its upto to sony from then on”

  29. Erix

Someone should get hold of a pirated GT5 on blu-ray and threaten Sony and PD that if they dont release it at the same time they will distribute the pirated version. But it will be kinda impossible though :/

  30. StogyBear

It is ridiculous to say sony is lagging the release so we can import it. Only a handful of enthusiasts will import it which wont even show on their charts. The reason why I think they’re going to release it later is to pretty much use Japan as a huge beta test. See what the people like/dislike before shipping it out to their biggest markets. NA and europe. As for translating the language and numbers. It’s pretty simple. Shouldn’t take more than a month with ONE person working on it. I’ll bet they already have the english version ready since the demo will most likely have the final game menu.

This is honestly getting out of hand. Sony and PD have hyped up this game so much that it’s not gonna meet people’s expectations. The graphics don’t really amaze any one anymore since most games have amazing graphics and we’re used to GT5P graphics too. Yes I will buy the game whenever it comes out. Would I be blown away as I would have a year back? Most likely not.

  31. Cuztheyrefast20

While most are upset with a delayed release, please realize it works both ways. MW2 just came out here this week. Shift and Dirt 2 came out a few weeks ago. MAG won’t come out until well after the US release. You just happen to be on the wrong end for this game. Just like I’m on the wrong end with other games.

  32. Dean

Next month they’ll say that US release date is March, 2011 LOL, and then I am officially shooting my PS3 right in the CPU.

You all have to understand why SONY/PD is doing this, it’s just business.
They can release it at the same time World Wide.
They know that 70% of us will import GT5 anyway, and when US version comes out, guess what we’ll be buying that too.

And finally, the release of GT5 is going to be huge business, they will outsell all games, people will be buying PS3 only for GT5, Bill Gates will be selling Microsoft for GT5, Mike Tyson will Box for GT5, Every kid will skip school that day, it will be a world wide holiday, Hollywood will complain because none came to theaters.

  33. sgh

To bad by that time GT5 hype is dead as Elvis and we are already playing other games and we shall see Forza 4 and PGR. But i think this will produce the biggest import of japanese game, since it will be so late especially in EU. I dont get it why cant they make it on April.

  34. dave.t

HOLY FREAKIN CRAPPPYYYY!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS DAMN WELL PISSING ME OFF. The ONLY reason why i got the ps3 was because of the GT series, but damnit PD, im about to run to xbox and forza 3. this wait is killing me beyond belief and this lesson in patience is way way way way worst than any girl can teach me. WAY WAY WAY WORST!!!!

  35. eMke3

NA gonna bite the bullet again and wait for the game while everyone else on the planet will be playing the game. Smart marketing cause they know a lot of us suckers will import other versions of the game, and when the game is released in NA we will obviously buy that one also. $$$Cha ching $$$ Sony bastards…..

  36. goonersems

expected really x box sales are battering the ps3 so sony can’t put their 2 bloskbuster games gt5 and god of war released in the same month but when you think it through
gt5 already has 3 demos lol

  37. pegaz2507

Thanks Kyle, but i ment how will i scroll down the menus, adjust my options etc… i will be lost and wont know where to go!I want this game for a long time,i might take Japanese lessons or something…this is really frustrating, counting days till realease!None of the racing games i play gets me say wooow, look at this,i can really feel the car!that is what only gt can do!you know what i mean right?

  38. Alan

@ setwave, i dont need to link it to u, im assuming its a may date in the us from the story that where commenting on right now, did u not even read the story?

  39. Kyle

    @Pegaz2507

playstation disks are region free which means they can be played on any playstation 3 console. Meaning you can race, but you won’t understand the language unless you speak and read Japanese.

It is no different if you lived in Japan and played the game there.

And people, give it a rest. It’s no marketing ploy or scam, they need to make the game equal for everyone else so they have to convert all the numbers and words and compile all the languages so that the game plays the same as if you were playing in another region.

  40. pegaz2507

I am from Croatia. Can someone explaine to me how can we play gt5 from Japan if it has Japanese language?I am sorry for my ignorance and my bad english!Looking forward to the demo!

  41. Tim

Actually this is good news for me because I am replacing my Digtal camera with a expensive sony Alpha A350 or A330 so I am going to be short on cash for a few weeks or so this gives me time to get the dosh to together to pay for my pre-order

  42. PeterWRC

My english is not very good sorry! But what’s your probleme with the comment? The PD will give the game for me, for you, etc… or not?

  43. setwave

    “Alan Says:

Going on the news that the realease date is march in japan and may in the us and canada,”
There is sony/pd news of US and Canada release in May. Unless you want to link it.

  44. ICANT55

Sony need to stop trying to make money by us importing the game then buying it when it comes to our Area!!!! Sad to say if it drops in march i will be one of those people LMAO!

  45. rich85tegr

I know some people have said it will be released after Japan because of localisation, but I assumed the GT5 menu’s would be the same as prologues menu’s so most of the localisation would already of been done would it not?

Also I’m a student in the third year of my degree and if GT5 is released the same time in EU as Japan then I’m going to be playing it instead of studying and end up failing my degree, don’t get me wrong I want GT5 released soonish but it would be better for me to be a summer release. I have some friends who have FM3 who are diehard shitbox fans and I didn’t see them around uni for a couple of weeks and there still behind on work and I don’t want to get into that situation, they also bought the collectors edition (waste of time in my opinion, the cars in it should be available in any good driving/racing game as standard anyway).

  46. viejalocca

Anybody know if GT5P will still be able to dwnload the rest of the stuff in GT5 when it comes out or is that not happening anymore?

  47. Alan

Going on the news that the realease date is march in japan and may in the us and canada, id say it should be april in europe, seeing as prologue came out in japan in december 07, europe: march 08 and us/ca: april 08

Once again pd are ripping us off by releasing it so much earlier in japan and hoping for people from europe/north america to import it from there and then buying it in their own region when its released there

  48. noname

A very trustable danish store says it will release in Denmark Friday March 5th. (Europe)
Though, they said that the release date could be moved. Dont know what to believe.. I guess a 2011 release aint that unrealistic..

  49. ralph89

May is my birthday, so i don’t care what the others are saying :). It’s still a win win situation. Sony are releasing some top games in February and march, if your a GT fan you do want to get GT5 full attention from the mass. If they released this side by side with some top game it will hurt the sale for GT, and that whats you call bad marketing.

  50. GT-Relentless

This is my second comment and I am getting madder by the minute! I agree with most of the comments said here ie this whole release date thing is starting to feel like a big marketing scam, as was said above after “5 YEARS” in development they surely could have organized a similtaneous worldwide release right? but lets face it were all still gonna buy it (but some of people maybe even twice) this is just plain wrong!

  51. setwave

Just because i like to see solid dates, here is the official start of summer for 2010 in the northern hemisphere:
    “June 21, 2010 at 7:23 am EDT”
Early is a term to define prior to the middle, which would mean anytime from June 21st to August the 5th. August the 5th is still early summer 2010 and could be as late a release for GT5, argh!

  52. AutoAki

Classic PD… hahaa, maximizing sales cause every european GT-fan will buy JPN-version. :D

Oh boys what a harsh strategy to take every penny away from our wallets. I’m so glad that I’m cured from GT-fever. Year ago I would have ordered that JPN-version without second thoughts… nowadays I’m only waiting first Game-Stop ‘Preowned’ copy.

Nice way to do business Sony.

  53. Rens

Why would people say this is fine? (first couple of comments)
    This isn’t fine!
I am willing to wait for a game because it is under construction,
but I am absolutely not willing to wait for no reason!

And early may pherhaps? Why would we assume that since the
summer does not start until the 21st of june?

This is truly ridiculous, why the hell do they need a few months
    to ship a bloody game?

PEOPLE SHOULD NOT REACT LIKE THIS IS NORMAL!

I am quite excited about coming thursday though!

I’m starting to think this time trail demo where getting is not the real demo. It’s far to early plus its a competition. Most demos come out a month or less before the full game.

I agree, I am thinking it as sounding and looking just like gt5p.
Hahahaha…what is funny is that I had a dream that I was already playing it.
The graphics and sounds were unbelievable beyond gt5p. the cars sound and looked just like an opening movie.
but, i’m sure that the demo and even gt5 won’t sound and look as good. dreams…they are too good to be true.

  55. jc

Summer of 2010 sucks, ill be importing, after 5 years this better be the best driving game EVER and keep me occupied for 5 years, Prologue got boring after a month or so, it would probably keep my attention with the online but it sucks, Keep getting failed to connect, locked into predetermined races, limited worldwide races, empty races, lots of immature racing.

  56. Sam__ NY

I’m starting to think this time trail demo where getting is not the real demo. It’s far to early plus its a competition. Most demos come out a month or less before the full game.

  57. GT-Relentless

All I can say is after all this GT5 had damn well better live up to all the hype, after all it’s the main reason most of us on here bought a PS3 in the first place! Sony and PD sort yourselves out, I think I can safely say we’re all getting a bit sick of these release date games now!

  58. JAGUAR1977

A summer US release in unreasonable, simple as that.

Hopefully the EU release is much earlier, if not I’ll be buying the Japanease import.

  59. 8@No$

Those stupid different release dates !! Because some managers want them to make sales… I guess they won’t listen to us anyways so stop complaining everyone.. After all, this is far from official so a worldwide release could be possible..
PeterWRC wait for GT6?? lol whatever dude

  60. Drug

I personally don’t see the point why a world-wide release is not possible. Even if they start to translate the game now, it’s still time to do it in time. And well, PD is working 5years+ on this baby already. They should know that the european market is the most important one for the Gran Turismo franchise. I still hope for March 2010.

  61. Craig

@PeterWRC. You have no idea at all! Go buy your xbox and play what??? Forza? I’ve played it and while fun, wasn’t impressed at all with the much touted physics engine. Do you believe a WRC game will even come close to what GT will be? You’ll buy GT5 on day 1 like the rest of us and enjoy playing it. Neck up you parrot.

  62. Craig

@NBH. The reason the game will release at different times to Japan has nothing to do with it clashing with the release of another big AAA game. To release in the US, the game needs to go through translation and localisation, English language, currency etc. Due to the number of European countries that speak different languages eg. Italian, Greek etc. the game usually releases a few months after Japan. It’s been the same with every other GT. They’re not holding it back, they’re finishing it off.

  66. drummermaniac

I think i will have to import this game from Japan to Portugal if thats the case…i can´t see this game shipping in Europe at the same time as Japan…i really can´t :S

  67. PeterWRC

I realy looking forward to get the GT5, but the PD going to pissed me off. If the WRC game will coming out before march, ill leave the GT. I wont buy it. They had 5 years to give me the GT5. If they dont want to do it,ok, ill wait until the GT6 coming, and i use other games. I wish good luck for the sony to keep their customers. I think a lot of people will buy xbox very soon!

  68. Erix

I hope the european version comes out at the same date as the NA release. It will be fairer that way. Then again if it comes out before I am not going to be too upset :P

  69. Gar

i forget to mention they’re the same people that wrote the article on Forza 3 being the better racer than GT5. How did they come to the conclusion? By comparing Forza 3 w/ GT5 prologue!

  70. Gar

Oh wait…. this news coming from Destructoid? That heavily biased anti-PS3 site? Shoot. I wonder how good were their ears.

  71. snaketus

If we don’t see the game in Europe before christams 2010, i don’t even bother to buy it. Japan releasei is in march and North America in early summer why keep Europe wait till christmas. Actually keep anyone waiting beyond march is ridicilous. Ofc I can import it, but I can see various problems with online play. So Europe release march or early summer or they will lose one customer. I won’t be waiting any longer than fat yanks.

  72. Wheel Nut

Err the report on the date is actually speculation!
No need to get too worked up yet and I agree with most of you if other regions are approx 1 or more months after Japanese release date then yeah it will be an import for many of us.

Lets wait and see when the dates are officially announced.

    As for EU/UK hasnt:
GT PSP, GT5P and even on X360 FM3 appeared in USA actually AFTER! the EU release date didnt they?

  73. RedBaron

So Sony wants us sheeps to buy game twice again and all rumours about worldwide release were useless. Thank you, Sony!

  74. NBH

The release dates are getting a bit frustrating now, they should have kept quiet until all 3 were known and then said them all in one go. I hope the EU release isn’t too long after the Japanese one, I find it annoying and I even have a bit of a chuckle to myself thinking the game is done and finished and people are playing it in other countries but some marketing person is holding it back because the release may clash with another ‘big’ game. I don’t care what other games may come out at the same time as GT, I’m buying it and not interested in any other PS3 game now until I get my hands on GT5! As far as I’m concerned the only reason to hold the release is if another big driving game was also coming out, can you really say because a totally different genre of game is also being released that people won’t buy GT5? I think Sony forget that there is a whole GT generation who have been playing the games for over a decade and will buy this game no matter what.

  75. ---Stone---

How about pushing Gran Turismo 5 to the exact, gauranteed, absolutely the final official date of December 20th 2012???

That way we can all play the greatest racing game ever to grace our existance one day before the entire world ends. :)

  76. Deadboy

I’m fully expecting GT5 to be unbelievable – but come on, we need to play it.

release it now (with a world wide release – ideally), and then release gt5.5 xmas 2010 everyone knows that we’d happily drop another £50 for another gt game.

    release the damn game!

this wait is killing me. oh well back at gta and gt5psp.

now taking bets on a xmas 2010 release date for Europe.

  77. Racer612008

Not that bad,I was hoping that the US gets the game on DAYTONA Speedweeks because NASCAR is in the game and that is the start of the NASCAR season or in March, and March 31 for Japan and March 26 for Europe

  78. [UK] ANDYW

Man… i hate this staggered release BS.

They’ve had 5 years to work on localisation..

I dont buy the ‘Marketing strategy’ kak either, 99% of GT fans know its due for release March@Japan.. so they’d rush to the shops at these dates in the US/EU regions..

Pah.. I just hope the GT Academy / Demo has some more meat to it than it would appear.

Right, back to GT4 for a bit, only done 30% anyhoo, and hopefully it’ll make full GT5 seem even more of a jump..

I don’t konw if you guys know this, but games generally release in S.E. Asia around th same time as in Japan. However, they release here in ENGLISH as well as CHINESE. So if you wanted to import a copy of the game early, why not purchase one from S.E. Asia (i.e. Malaysia or Singapore).
Beats waiting until May, and its in l’Anglais.

I will be very very surprised if the game is going to be released in may i NA and EU. I expect a late summer release, but hopefully I´m wrong. I have absolutly no faith in PD anymore…

I’d say poor Europeans they won’t see the game till next Christmas, but they do have GT Academy. Hearing this news almost makes me want to import it but I suppose I can get NFS:Shift in the meantime. And start saving up for a G27

more waiting :( … but what else can we do…

torture!!… Aside from importing from Japan, most of us will have to test drive that GT5 demo for 5 months…

whatever new track it will be on the 17th, we will be wearing it out bad…
