Gran Turismo Demo at 4K Resolution Described as “Absolutely Stunning”

Polyphony Digital’s demonstration of a Gran Turismo tech demo running at “4K resolution” made quite a splash when it hit the news a few weeks ago.

The demo is on display and available to the public at the “Dramatic 4K Experience” hosted at the Sony Building in Tokyo, Japan, and hands-on impressions of the game are starting to appear around the web.

Aside from some screen-tearing and “pop-in” issues likely generated from the demo running on four independent PlayStation 3 consoles, the reviews are generally positive.

User “spats” on NeoGAF summarized his comments, describing the demo as “absolutely stunning”:

I’m giving off a negative impression but it really was absolutely stunning. The tunnel section in Eiger running at a 4K res and 60fps was some next level stuff.

Spats also shared gameplay footage of the demo in the YouTube clip above, though the benefits of 4K resolution will obviously not be apparent in such a video.

Keep in mind a version of this 4K game was first demonstrated back in 2008, and is unlikely to include any new features or changes which Polyphony Digital has or may be planning to implement for Gran Turismo 6.

But surely its just the same as GT4 running on a 1080p tv?
Textures and game assets are still the same so it would look worse than normal?

    1. phil_75

Give me 1080p at 120hz solid, no dips.
Anyone who thinks 4k will be the “norm” in thenext few years are kidding themselves!
Only around 40% (being generous here) have 1080 tvs, about 35% have 720 tvs and this is 6 -7 years after they came out with the last 25% on crt (probably higher)
As for 3D, over 2 years since launch i bet less than 5% have 3D 1080p tvs!
Don’t forget OLED is close to becoming mainsream as well!

4k is way off, PS5 maybe, PS4 no way!

  2. Mike712

I don’t see the effing point, the PS4 won’t have the texture memory needed for proper 4k textures(it’ll get 2gb shared memory if we’re lucky) so they’ll just be up-scaled 1080p textures and look exactly the same, really I don’t get it….

  3. jangelelcangry

the end of the video sounds more like prologue’s menu sounds, also the animation from the position chart is like the one from P except smaller due 4k res. this does not look like gt5. correct me if i’m wrong.

  4. zr1chris

That looks amazing even with an off screen camera shot. I can only imagine what it looks like in person. I hope the next gen of consoles supports this.

    1. That_guy100

If the next gen systems support 4k, which I highly doubt they will, good luck affording a TV that supports it. And if you do, good luck noticing the differences between current gen resoloutions

  5. BMfan

PD has to worry about 4k because of most of the people on this site.
If the next Forza game comes out with 4k support then you will have people complaining on here about the fact that GT doesn’t.

    1. RodSk8Dude

I would be happy with them just fixing the resolution of cars when in smoke/dust, having better shadow resolution and using some more anti-aliasing (it’s not like I would be able to buy one TV like that on this lifetime)

  6. lalaurentide

How can the game look stunning in 4K when all the game assets, except the car models, aren’t that impressive. The antialias and anisitropic are bad, the 2D trees, the absence of grass, the lack of props in the environment, the “box” buildings, the repeating textures, the low quality textures, low quality shadows, and so on. It’s on par with Grid on PC, not the next gen stuff that blow you away.

  7. SimonK

Filming this in this manner is akin to taking a tape recorder to capture a demonstration of a $100,000 7.1 Surround Sound system. Utterly pointless.

  8. LostBoyNZ

To me GT5 didn’t even do 1080p very well, so I really hope they don’t try for 4K. I imagine, like with 3D this time, Sony will put the pressure on them to do 4K to sell more TVs.

But with screen tearing (running off one single PS3), poor shadows and such, I think they should focus on making 1080p look fantastic instead.

    1. xmdfmk7x

Don’t be an idiot. 4K is absolutely ESSENTIAL for any upcoming racing sim. If you think 1080p is “good enough” then clearly you have never tried a sim with triple-displays or a single screen display running at QHD/2K/4K. Even at a sub-2K resolution like Quad HD, the huge number of extra pixels allows you to see so much more detail in the track, especially with seeing farther out toward the horizon, and you can actually use the in-car camera without crippling your view of the track.

Well,As long as everything will be upgraded ,not just grafics,Im all for gt6.Although im enjoying Nurburgring everyday in gt5.I love the new Honda Hsv.

  10. fifomaniak

It is probably the same version, which was used in 2008. Notice no opponents list, worse tire and engine sounds compared to GT5. It is based on GT5: Prologue, this 4K demo.

    1. Ii_law-man

Salsa notice that many people chose to doable those in the in game settings. It’s not hard to figure that out. Durr…….

  11. Owen.C93

Hopefully they don’t push for 4k in GT6, at least at 60fps because they can do so much more at 1080p in better hardware.

    1. shurnster

      ^ ^ This +1

Consoles this generation already had a problem outputting 1080p up-scaled, causing some games to run at 30fps. Next gen needs to be just at natively at 1080p, so developers can get more out of the hardware and run constant 60fps. Sony needs to stop rushing…3d technology wasn’t bad for games, but it would have been better for next gen.

    2. xmdfmk7x

      @shurnster

You really think the next-gen consoles should just shoot for a pathetic standard of just 60fps at 1080p? Have you forgotten that console cycles are pushing beyond 7 years now? In another 7 years time, 4K will be widely accepted and supported. If the consoles shoot for a standard that is already out of date like 1080p then we’ll all have 4K TV’s and our games will be upscaled from 1080p to 4K and look just as horrible as they do today when they upscale from 600p/720p to 1080p. I have a fairly powerful gaming PC and it does 1080p on not just one, but 3 monitors without ever dropping below 60fps (capped with v-sync) in Battlefield 3. This is with all options maxed out, including anti-aliasing, and BF3 can tax hardware pretty good. If I can do this on my PC today, I damn well expect to see the next-gen consoles that handle something similar or we’re going to be in for another 7-10 years of absolutely rubbish looking games. Current console game graphics are terrible as it and it’s a shame to keep seeing games that are held back by crappy hardware, especially when I’m certain that if GT5 was available for PC that I’d be able to run it right now at 4K with no problem.

I am stoked about Sony making so much noise with 4K. They’re pushing for consumers to get their hands on awesome technology and if they do it right, it’ll help them out big time with their financial troubles. It took far too long for TV & gaming to evolve from SD to HD. The transition to 4K needs to happen sooner and as long as the people in charge of making it happen think more like me instead of you, then we’ll all benefit sooner rather than later. You shouldn’t ever be satisfied with today’s technology, because that attitude is exactly what prevents advancement and it’s the same reason behind the super long wait for the next-gen consoles.

4k resolution will be amazing but there is one problem that people still forget:

The higher the resolution, the more “defects” show up and stand out in game in terms of visuals, for example: the spectators in game which look like a piece of cardboard will look even worse. The lack of dynamic lighting in-game, the lack of detailed cracks and dust on track will be amplified, etc etc.

Small things like that will become BIG things with 4K resolution.
Look, Im all for 4K resolution, but hopefully PD realise that other things must be upgraded along with the higher resolution, which PD DIDDNT DO when we all started playing on 1920X1080 and they kept the standard cars.

    Holding thumbs!!!

    1. SavageEvil

Relax dude, PD isn’t going to out a GT in 4K. This was a tech demo because GT5 is a technically impressive feat on a console, so Sony obviously wanted to show off 4K using Kaz’s baby. I surely hope that GT6 sticks pretty close to the models of Premium cars in GT5, double the on screen cars, seriously upgrade the courses(courses should have fans, fan noise, cheering, air horns, photo flashes, track side movement safety personnel and actual movement because cars are passing by). Night and day transitions for every course in the game, weather effects according to location and can be altered within reason. Endurance races will have realistic rules, which should tie in to vehicular damage modeling, cautions laps, flagging and the like. Included race disciplines should have their rules and their own race series that you can optionally enter during your playing of the game. More robust tuning, more options related to tires, engine(ECU, boost pressure, etc..), suspension, aerodynamics and weight. I do hope that PD really overhauls the tuning aspect fully and make sure to not make it too limited. Sure there are casual players but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have time to sit back and really dig into the meat and potatoes of the game.

We want easily shareable tunes and car club type of interaction, a more solid online that allows seamless hop in hop out racing, allow A-Spec to B Spec switch and vice versa in any race, even online. Allow the amount of cars that have RM to increase to as many as allowed, also when they include Super GT or any other racing body, why is it we need to have like 6 of the same type of cars but many others are not even represented, at least get all the Super GT cars from the same season in the game and WRC, Le Mans, NASCAR…no more multiple cars but not enough to have a field of realism with many different types of cars and liveries.

Good, nip that^ in the bud early. :)

    Your learning Jordan.

    Lol.

  14. 05XR8

I’m still waiting for the day that a developer can record an actual race and we can drive the whole event as it happened, in a game.Formula 1 did something similar by testing the players skill by nursing the car or advancing position in certain situations. I also agree with everyone about the sound, it’s been 15 years and i’ve been with Gran Turismo from the start, can we get real sound bites for a change?

  15. Haiej

Does anyone know how many inches (diagonal) is the display they are using ?
Is it a TV or the Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K Projector ?

  16. GTPM118

Maybe its my imagination but people look better not a pixelated. They seem to have the real texture that PD intended to be.
    Sorry for my English

  17. djs

I bet PD is going to push 4K for GT6 like they did with 3D on GT5 and run out of resources for other foundamental aspects of the game. Hope they don’t, but a big let down feels incoming…

    1. phil_75

Yes you know that, another stuttering, screen tearing, pixellated mess again thanks to Sony wanting to sell 4k TV’s.

      learn.like.no.other.

  18. yanfloist

Awesome, pretty sure the next game will be on a new console. Remember, PD is all about visuals and 4k resolution should do the trick.

  19. m8h3r

Will the PS4 have the power of 4 PS3’s and be able to run smooth and without much screen tear, or is this just a “for the sake of it” test by PD.
