Gran Turismo Sport at TGS 2016: Off-Screen Footage

Gran Turismo Sport is playable this weekend at Tokyo Game Show as we reported earlier this month, and thanks to Gamersyde we have a few videos showing us the latest build that event-goers are able to experience.

Unfortunately for anyone hoping to see some new tracks or content, Polyphony Digital have held back and have chosen to show off more of the tracks we’re already aware of. Brands Hatch and Fisherman’s Ranch are the circuit of choice and all seems to be as it were from the last time the game was shown off at Gamescom (given the limited footage on show at that event). There are some slight alterations that are noticeable to a keen eye however; presentation-wise, improvements are definitely still on-going.

The HUD has seen some slight changes with a more dynamic map on display and some changes to the speedometers. At the moment, the screen shows a lot of data compared to what you’d usually see in a racing game from the ‘hood’ cam. Interestingly, in the bottom right hand-corner under a 3D view of the track being raced on, there appears to be the words ‘Map: 3D’ and arrows on either-side. Perhaps this view of the track is customizeable as opposed to the seemingly static track-view on the top-left side of the screen.

Loading screens have also seen a change, with a nifty dynamic display of the car complimented with random technical specs being highlighted such as vehicle width, height and weight, all presented in a very sleek fashion. The UI team at Polyphony have clearly been hard at work.

Even with the delay news clear in mind, it would have been a good boost of publicity for the game if PD showed off some new tracks, cars or features. There is a tournament at the Tokyo Game Show tomorrow where racers will get the chance to challenge some Super GT drivers, so perhaps Polyphony and Sony can show us some new content or share some new information to soften the blow of the game being moved into some point in 2017.

Is that damage at 1:27 in the first video? It looks to me like the AI car that the player collides with at 1:27 gets a big dent.

Looksl ike another copy paste of a series that hasent changed since its ps2 days. This would be ok if it was still 2004 but with games like Forza, Project cars, AC and more GT cant compete anymore its a dinosaur.

More useless videos of the most underwhelming racing series. Still the same collisions, still the same sounds, still the same roof cam.

Yep, can’t believe PD still haven’t sorted all these things out. Same awful camera positions from GT5, same lazy damage system, same old sounds!

Cameras are one of my biggest issues with GT. It’s as if they have no communication or method of where to place cameras. Some are really well positioned on the hood where others are on the top edge of the windscreen, some half way back along the roof!

The interior cameras are just as inconsistent and the chase cameras are way too far back. All this breaks immersion and ruins the feel of the cars! PD frustrates me so much, I’m going over to Forza if GT Sport is just as inconsistent as the last 2 games. I crave immersion but GT fails to deliver because of the horrendous cameras

It looks very nice and all but I think I’m going to be as underwhelmed with the rally section as I have in most recent GTs.

Rally for me should convey speed and danger more than any other form of motorsport because of the combination of high speed, often narrow tracks and multiple hazards near the roadside. GT rally is more rallycross – all sweeping wide tracks with the odd (wide) hairpin to try and break the monotony.

I really liked the street based circuits they did around GT4 with Amalfi and the south of France one, but I don’t think we will see their likes again unfortunately.

This game is destined to be a failure in game design. PDs leadership is too old in ideas.

Sony REALLY NEEDED to inject some outside developer talent into PD. Evolution Studios WAS their best bet, but Sony butchered them.

I skipped GT6 and I’ll be skipping this, too. I am NOT happy about doing so.

Sounds like they are sticking with the Hoover sounds for the cars. Nice smooth graphics though. Collision detection looked way off to me. Let’s hope they have some ai and a decent damage model and I may consider. I’ve ordered my ps vr so that may sway my decision to buy for a quick arcade blast with vr. I prefer Sims though.

  7. GTvsForza

I lost interest in GTS a while back. Looking at this early build, they still haven’t made the barriers and fences destructible. GG Polyphony.

  8. TrickyTree

The opposition seem to have 2 wheels off the ground on the Brands clip at 40 seconds.Front left and rear right! No wonder they need longer to develop the game. Imagine the outcry if it were to be released like that.

    1. ALB123

Great catch. If you pause it at 0:44 you’ll see exactly what TrickyTree is talking about. It’s probably exactly little things like this that caused the delay.

Look at the disaster of a launch for Kunos’s Assetto Corsa. Console gamers are a vicious bunch, I’ve learned.

  9. Theaffliction

Anybody else notice the green triangles on track. They look to be marking apexes and entry/exit points… Interesting

Still with the horrible roof camera? Ugh… Was hoping PD would finally fix their weird camera positions and do a proper hood cam already!

    1. Ben Rogue

Of course. I just want PD to stop being so i consistent! I often don’t drives cars I like in GT6 simply due to their camera positions. I understand that some people like the roof cam, but if a car doesn’t have a good hood cam, I just don’t drive it.

If they don’t correct this I honestly think I’ll pass on GT Sport, it breaks immersion too much for me. I’ll definitely be keeping an out on the XB Scorpio and Forza. It may not have good physics, but the camera positions have always been spot on!
