Gran Turismo Sport is not Gran Turismo 7, More Substantial than Prologue Titles

Following hot on the heels of everything we currently know about the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport, there is another fact that can be added to that list, one that answers a question many of you have been asking since yesterday’s announcement: Gran Turismo Sport is not Gran Turismo 7.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s president and CEO Jim Ryan confirmed this when speaking with Eurogamer, saying GT7 wasn’t being announced at this stage. However, there’s insistence that GT Sport will be more substantial than the more traditional ‘Prologue’ titles in the franchise that have prefaced the full-featured releases.

“Fair to say [series director Kazunori Yamauchi] has been making these games for some considerable time now. I think it’s reasonable to assume that something else might come down the road. Is it a Prologue? No, I think it’ll be more than that.

The old days, when the games were offline, the experience was defined by what’s on the disc. You had a distinction between a Prologue and a full GT, it was very stark. When the game becomes more of an online connected experience, that distinction blurs. This will be much more than a Prologue type experience.”

There are still many questions surrounding the new title and with the confirmation that GT Sport is not the seventh entry in the franchise, but a standalone effort, one of the more frequent questions can be laid to rest.

For more on everything we currently know on GT Sport be sure to turn to news that broke shortly after the official reveal, and stay tuned to GTPlanet for more news on Gran Turismo as soon as its available.

“When the game becomes more of an online connected experience, that distinction blurs. This will be much more than a Prologue type experience.”

But that only signifies an ever-growing problem with Video Games and Gran Turismo nowadays. To much reliance of internet connectivity. When one becomes reliant on something that isn’t dependable, it leads only in disaster.

I hope for the best. But, I can’t shake the stark feeling that this game will be released incomplete and then take 2 years to become so. As was 5 and 6. And hell, it’s questionable whether those two can be considered complete.

This could be a lot more like what GT HD was meant to be with the start of the PS3’s life cycle. It was going to be continually updated in an evolutionary sense.

When Polyphony Digital logo popped while watching the conference I almost teared up… aww who am I kidding I did tear up. I have always enjoyed Gran Turismo games and from what was announced I’m thinking this one will offer alot. It might be a bit confusing as to what this is, but hopefully as they test the waters they will make good decisions on the final release.

Josh, I’m trying to plan holidays next year. What will the weather be like in Central Ontario in the first two weeks of August?

So, we’re to disregard a direct comment from Sony Europe’s President and CEO (that’s the important bit there) in lieu of this comment with no evidence or proof?

Yep, seems legit. I will rename this piece immediately.

What if it needs Playstation Plus to play online? Wouldn’t the number of online players would be reduced?

I thought the age rating “7 to 77” indicated a hint, that it was the seventh installment.. Guess it’s like a GT 6,5 then?

My conclusion from everything that I have seen and read is that GT Sport is an interim title to get the GT brand on PS4 and plug the gap between GT6 and GT7.

The FIA connection could be a possibly very exciting idea. People have been asking for a more hardcore racing experience with proper mechanical/cosmetic damage modelling, better AI, race rules, qualifying and etc. It is mere speculation at this point but working with FIA may mean that PD is trying to make progress in this direction, it makes sense considering PD is trying to bring an official racing body like FIA into a virtual realm.

I don’t want to scare people but I did notice with the graphics that whilst the car modelling has certainly improved, it seems to be that the tracks look like they are GT6 assets with some minor improvements. It is not a major issue for me, it takes a long time to create models and assets for race tracks and it still looked nice to be honest. However, there’s no excuse why this shouldn’t be 1080p 60fps.

I am looking forward to playing this as it is a fresh direction for the series and it gives us something to play whilst GT7 is on its way.

So I’m guessing it would be sort of like a “Horizon” game, sort of a different series from the same franchise.

So this sounds like a sim version of Driveclub crossed with GT Academy. If they sell it like that I think it would be fun and do well. If its sold as a Prologue Plus though…

So, is the new GT Sport forum gonna be cleared of all the GT7 threads, are they gonna be put back in the GT7 sub forum?

  10. Mr_Hansen

First of all I wish (though it’s not gonna happen) that people would relax and look forward to what we get, instead of being negative and demanding more information – when they’ve only JUST announced the game..

My personal opinion is, that Gran Turismo Sport might become a stand-alone – E-SPORT like game, which will possible live alongside GT7 when it is eventually released in the future.
That doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be some sort of Beta for GT7 too, but given that it now seems its championships are officially recognized by the FIA as a kind of racing series, GTS might continue as such a thing for the years to come.

No matter what, I’m really looking forward to it, and to finally retiring the PS3! :D

I wish they would outright tell us WTH this thing is instead of giving completely vague information. It’s confusing to the consumers.

    1. crunchMONKY78

I’ve a feeling that PD doesn’t even know what this is. With how vauge this announcement is and how out of touch with reality they are when it comes to their own product.. nothing about this says “we’re sorry about our mistakes.. here’s a game to make everything right with the franchise again”.

    2. mister dog

No GT title would be complete without the necessary vagueness of what the game will be about. It helps to sell day one copies.

  12. KPizzle16

I was going to assume that GT Sport would be limited to FIA related content, but after watching the trailer that can’t be the case. So, I assumed it would be some sort of beta or demo instead. Would that be a safe conclusion?

    1. Johnnypenso

It could still be based around FIA sanctioned racing but not taking the connection to FIA to the letter. That is you might still see saloon type racing in the lower classes and graduating up to the FIA sanctioned events at the higher levels.

This will probably be another let down once again from PD….I loved the game for over a decade but when PD started making promises which they couldn’t keep. My faith in this game went south……….SO with that being said I’ll believe it when I see it.

    1. The Chosen One

“This will probably be another let down once again from PD”
      Stop yourself right there.
We do not know ANYTHING about this game related to features/gameplay/cars included.
Why is it such a trend on GTPlanet to crap on every release, mind you this game comes out on 2016, a YEAR AWAY.
