GT Sport Time Trials: Renault-Nissan Alliance

We’ve got a new set of GT Sport Time Trials today, covering the next two weeks. Not only is there a return for some rally action, but we get to race in opposite ends of the race car spectrum from the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Rally fans will be heading to the Colorado Springs Lake circuit and, unusually, the reverse direction course. That’s likely to see a spread of times, simply due to lack of familiarity with a track that rarely features in either layout — and the reverse course doesn’t even feature in Circuit Experience.

This week’s rally car isn’t a typical Gr.B machine, but something a great deal older and slower. Renault’s R8 Gordini, which arrived in GT Sport in an update in April 2019, may be small, but it was a successful rally car in its day. The 100hp, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive car won the Tour de Corse three years in a row. You simply have to set the fastest lap you can.

The tuning challenge for the next two weeks features something very, very different. When Nissan decided to take on Le Mans in 2015, following more than 20 years out of top level prototype racing, it came back with arguably the most distinctive car ever to race in the event’s top tier.

Nissan turned to the Ben Bowlby, the designer of the famous DeltaWing. He came up with a radical concept, featuring a front-mounted petrol engine driving the front wheels, and a four-wheel electric hybrid system. Despite sound principles, technology and reliability rendered the GT-R LM NISMO hopelessly uncompetitive, and none of the cars finished. Nissan subsequently scrapped the program.

You’ll be driving the car in this set of time trials, and you’ll have access to the full suite of GT Sport settings to tame some of its less remarkable qualities, as you try to lap the Circuit de la Sarthe — the only circuit this car ever raced in anger.

GT Sport’s Time Trial mode is a global competition, ranking your best time against all players worldwide, rather than just those in your region as with other Sport Mode events. These two time trials will run through to November 19, when two further events will replace them.
