GTPlanet’s GT6 Track of the Week: Complex String

Gran Turismo first showed up in racers’ PlayStations way back in 1997. Over the almost 19 years since, there have been tracks that have fallen by the wayside, but few of Polyphony’s original creations have achieved the level of prominence that Complex String enjoys. 15 years young, its one and only appearance was in Gran Turismo 3, as far and away the longest track in the game at that point (and a precursor for the even longer Nordschleife in GT4).

Now, you can drive it again.

Okay, so it’s not a 100% accurate recreation: the undulating S-bends on the back half have been flattened, while the box-turns are now a sequence of hairpins as tight as the Track Path Editor will allow. The other big difference is that the final chicane of the lap has been smoothed into a flat-out kink. But Complex String lives! Forum member ZEROTHEKNIGHT has painstakingly recreated the track, as you can see in the very detailed revision history provided in the download link. It only seemed appropriate then, to drive Complex String in a car that is inextricably linked to the track: the Ruf RGT.

Gran Turismo 6
Look at that body roll!

The RGT was the weapon of choice in GT3’s final Time Trial. Players were met with top times to beat much like the license tests found elsewhere, but these times were posted by Polyphony employees. Of course, the top time to beat, on the hardest track in the game, had to be set by none other than Kazunori Yamauchi himself.

The RGT is a lot more prone to roll-on oversteer in GT6 than I remember it being as a teenager playing GT3. But it takes to the turns on this Eifel Flat recreation with aplomb. The smooth surfaces make the corners very unforgiving, as you can’t rely on the camber of the road to get you back on the racing line if you’ve overshot your mark. Each section rewards consistency, and stringing a full lap together feels just as fulfilling as it did all those years ago. After trying a race against the AI, I can only imagine what fun this will provide for online racers!

I leave you with this video from the original, care of staff member daan, with driving by big p:

Have you created the next great race track? Add your track to the GTPlanet Track Database now, and submit it to the Week 25 Submission Thread for your chance to have it featured next week. The deadline for submissions is 20:00 GMT on March 31, so don’t wait!

My friend in Japan had made a very close but he made a shorter one which is 6.21 miles long and the GT3 version in 6.98 miles long.

Can there be a separate competition for modded TPE-created tracks? The normal TPE competitions show great use of creativity and skill under constraints, but we could also showcase what would happen if those constraints were to be lifted.

Are modded tracks not allowed or something? There are so many better made ones thanks to modded TPEs

Although the track path editor doesn’t allow to replicate the final chicane, the lap times between GT3 and GT6 are pretty close! Daan did a 4’35 in GT3 and Kyle is on a 4’30 in GT6. Take that chicane into account and you’re right there.

I’ll start off by giving thanks to Kyle-P for this article :)
A thanks also to the respective forum members who’ve voted for this resource which had started at the early days of Gran Turismo 6 Course Maker :)
A special thanks to Jordan for being the first to like my resource when it was at it’s second update on GT6 track data base which was version 2.5 – which to me embarrasingly way different than Version 5.4 X)
Because of Jordan’s early ( like ) to this resource – it motivated me to torture myself for about 5 months if we counted it since last year’s October until this march X)
The most difficult edits were the 3 half circles & the wavy or zig-zag lines above the course map X)
Thanks to everybody who’ve liked this resource ^^
    Please enjoy this replica ^^

    1. ZEROTHEKNIGHT

Notice : Version 2.0 originally is the first update of the resource before publishing it as – the first published – version on GT6 track data base.
So version 2.5 is actually the second update ( on the site version history – not in my own version history ) since i didn’t posted version 1.0 on the site before version 2.0 X)
Just liked to confirm it to everyone :)

    2. ZEROTHEKNIGHT

      Yes thanks to you X)
And one correction on my notice :
*( on the site version history – not in my own version history )*
      The correction is :
( In my own version history – not on the site version history )
      I’ve flipped them XP
