Before the 2012 GT Awards, I had the opportunity to sit down with Kazunori Yamauchi for a brief interview. We covered a wide range of topics, and I tried to cover some of the most frequently asked questions and discussed topics in GTPlanet’s forums.
Thank you to my friends at SCEA for helping to arrange this interview, and thank you to Kazunori-san for his time and his interesting responses.
On behalf of the GTPlanet community, thank you for your time today, it is great to speak with you again. As you know, fans are eager to learn more about your future plans for the Gran Turismo series. At the GT Academy finals at Silverstone, you said you wanted to focus on “human drama” in the next game. Can you explain what you meant by that?
Yes, I am sure the GTPlanet community and the fanbase there are wondering what I was talking about.
So to expand on that further, I believe Gran Turismo is not only a video game; it’s a movement. When I was at the GT Academy finals, I saw all those young people with the talent and the capacity to be involved in something that might be life-changing for them. I saw how Gran Turismo had an effect on their lives, so what I meant by that comment was that I hope GT will continue to have that affect in the future as well, because I could really see the impact Gran Turismo has had on people.
I hope it will continue to have that impact and to create drama in that sense.
Can you describe how the various themes, cars, and tracks are chosen for GT5‘s Seasonal Events?
Every time, our Online Operations team at Polyphony Digital has a discussion of what they would like to do next, then they come to me with their ideas. I take their ideas and then we decide what to do from there.
I think the online team has a very difficult job, because within the resources GT5 has they have to come up with something different every time.
You designed Gran Turismo PSP with an open structure to focus on car collection. If you were to build another mobile game, would you preserve this structure, or would you design it with a more traditional order of progression as found in other Gran Turismo games?
I always want to challenge myself to do something new every time, so if I were to create another mobile game it would be different from both GT PSP and from GT5.
Many online rooms in GT5 are created by players who want to compete against each other in drag races. GT4, of course, featured a drag strip here in Las Vegas, but there is no specialized drag racing track in GT5. Will a formal drag racing mode ever appear in GT5 or return to the series in future games?
I think there is a good chance drag racing will be featured in future Gran Turismo versions, yes.
And I think I have said this before as well, but when I went to see the NHRA drag races, I really got to see how involved those races are, because within a few seconds you can win or lose the race.
So, for example, if you had a car break after three seconds, it’s not strong enough, but if you have one that lasted for ten seconds, it would be too slow to win the race, and I think that’s the gist of drag racing. So far I have found it difficult to incorporate that into the game.
Can you explain why you decided to introduce the experience point & leveling system in GT5, and do you expect to keep it in future games?
It’s always difficult to answer a question about why we chose to do something. When we design Gran Turismo, a lot of it is just based on what we feel is the right decision at the time. When GT5 was released it just felt right to have those experience points, and that’s why we did it. I don’t know what will feel right in future games.
Every Gran Turismo version is actually very different and made from scratch; we really go back to the drawing board for a lot of things. GT5 isn’t necessarily a continuation of GT4, and the next game won’t necessarily be a continuation of GT5.
Critics often complain about the car engine sounds in GT5, claiming they sound sterile or artificial. What is your opinion on these engine sounds in GT5, and will these critics’ concerns be addressed in future games?
My perspective is that the sounds in Gran Turismo are just too real. With the recording method we use, we use a dyno and put the load on, and the sound we produce is just too accurate. I think it would be a good thing to sort of design the sound a little bit, and so that is something I would like to challenge ourselves with in the future.
What I find is that one of our themes with Gran Turismo is to create something that is real; that is what our team is focused on, but that can be an issue sometimes as well. If we see something in front of us, we try to reproduce that very accurately, and that tendency is getting stronger.
But, I think we maybe need to make things sexier sometimes, and I think that is something the Gran Turismo team might need to work on. It could also be because our team is growing in number, which could be one of our barriers to that goal.
There are many high quality racing games and simulators on the market today. What do you feel makes Gran Turismo 5 different from these games, and how do you think these features will evolve in the future?
As for how GT5 is different from the other games, that is something you all probably know better than we do, and I think that is something for you all to decide!
As for the future, there are always so many things that we want to do and usually just not enough time, so we’ll just have to wait until the package is ready to see what can make it in.
Lucas Ordóñez just competed at Petit Le Mans in the radical DeltaWing car. What are your thoughts on this car, and can players ever expect to drive it in a Gran Turismo game?
The engineering is very interesting on the DeltaWing; it looks kind of strange to me, like a tricycle, but it is based on very solid engineering and so that is very interesting to me. To try and understand that car is like trying to solve a puzzle.
As for people being able to drive the car in a Gran Turismo game, well, Lucas is a winner of GT Academy, so that is always a possibility.
For over ten years, the GTPlanet community has tried to figure out what type of car is under the sheet on the North American cover of the first Gran Turismo game; many think it is a 1997 Camaro. Can you finally put this debate to rest and reveal what the car is?
[Laughs, a long pause...] I think it was just a sportscar, nothing really strange, but I really don’t remember…I’ll have to look that up!

What the hell? ”The Sound is too real…”? Define the word ”Real” and then take another look at GT5. All he did was mess everything up. At first when I got the game I was excited to get my hands on the Bugatti Veyron ’09 and to take it for a spin with that loud W16. As usual when I first heard how the car sounded, I was like “Uhhhh wft is going on here?” and I was even more disappointed in the Lamborghini’s – since when do all Lambo’s sound the same, and in what world? ”The Real Driving Simulator” that’s fine but not ”The Real Car Sound Simulator”. I have a Samsung Smart TV with a built in FM Transmitter and by using my phone I can hear everything crystal clear by tuning the radio into the frequency through my headphones. It sounds great but not fantastic.
Suddenly the custom gearbox sounds are a lot higher in volume since the new update and it is irritating because thats all I can hear from inside the cabin and no engine sounds. The BMW M5, Citroen GT and Bugatti Veyron sound all the same from stock exhaust and why when you are trying to have a drag race, the only thing that gets louder is the wind from outside and not your car really.
The Honda HSV Weider: Why does the sound have to be ear bursting loud, even when I turn the volume down it’s still too loud. I’m a big Jaguar fan and I know how an XK-R sounds like in real life – the XK-R in GT5 isn’t even near the real life sound, not even 5% close, if I have to say it really sounds like marbles that is being shaken in a glass jar, that how I describe its sound. The Aventador. I don’t even want to talk about that anymore, but its sound can only be described in one word ”Ghastly”.
Explain this: Why is the Top Gear Test Track longer with water on the surface in the License Menu? Why, why, why? We want to experience real life Top Gear Drag Races, and lets face it Top Gear fans – the track is always a bit damp when they do drag races on it. So why doesn’t is give us the choice of having a bit of water on the track, and tracks like Monza (No Chicane), SS Route 7 (Weather with snow) why can’t we have that in Arcade mode, but Online?
Back to the sound. If he cannot get someone who can record REAL LIFE SOUNDS of REAL CARS, then why is he using the same sound director over and over again, thus messing up the sounds and also bringing disappointments to the game. Why is NFS’s sound and Forza’s sound so much better? Why, because nobody is messing things up from over 3 months of recording work. Take note Kaz. Get some help from the NFS and Forza sound directors.
Agree with you. Yeah, the guy suffers from impaired hearing or is lying. The single worst thing aboug GT5 is the unrealistic auto sounds. The Bugatti Veyron sounds like a cheap Japanese tuner.
Ok I think this news is very interesting . To make this convo short, engine sounds arent that bad . I mean I am speaking about stock exhaust sounds . I usually drive with stock exhaust and yes it’s accurate in a lot of cars but kaz is right . If they used dyno they can add more aggression to it . Like that ferrari f430, LFA or even the sports exhaust r34 sounds so good . I tuink the old nissan 240z and 280z sounds real inline 6 however ofcourse there are inaccurqte cars as well like vtec sounds . And I dont have any home theatre. I have g27 led 1080p tv and I only use computer speakers that has a moderate sub size ane 5.1 channel perfect for my room. So far im happy witu it anr I change the audio to “small theatre” and it actually makes a difference in cockpit view sound!
(sorry for any grammatic errors and spelling mistakes, English is a hobby language to me.)
I think people are been abit harsh on this thread. And I think that might be to some social/cultural misunderstandings.
Yes the Japanese are very proud, and will rarely admit they haven’t done their best. But, I rarely see the japanese people, hold back on an apology, if they actually think its deserven. And before I start, cmon guys. Stop comparing kamikaze plains, and been downright rude against an entire nation, that actually have a pretty good rumour for what you accuse them of failing in.. Anyway, I see alot of people bashing over this:
1. Sound, people seem to only notice him stating they are to “real”. He does actually state “But, I think we maybe need to make things sexier sometimes, and I think that is something the Gran Turismo team might need to work on.” Now, if we’re gonna be generalizing, then we westeners, have a tendency, to jump on the first negative thing we can “misunderstand”, and only focus on that. And also the japanese people, have it hard saying they did wrong. Instead they will usually do, what he just did. Say he will try to do better. Dyno runs have a tendence, atleast from my experience, to create a sound, not the same as on the street.(Somebody also stated, that it might be a translation fail, and it should have been “clean” and not “real”. Also, I have seen people in GT5, complain about cars sounding unrealistic, without thinking one bit, about how much noice a transmission make, in a full blooded racecar fx. Tho’ I will agree, the sounds are not satisfiying by any means. Summoned up in a defending way, he states the sounds might be to real, given they’r taken from a dyno, and they might need to work on making the sounds sexier.)
2. When it comes to drag racing, he is japanese. The american spirit of “racing a car” as a civilian on the streets, is from light to light. Where as in Japan, it’s about going fast on mountain roads. Two completely different things, and I wouldn’t be surprised, if they in Japan, (just like most of europe who follows races like F1, DTM, WTCC, ETCC and so on.) Think it is quite to simple, and has very little to do with actual driving skills, but more a test to the engineer, and the reactions of the driver. NOT how well he breaks a car, not how well he turns, balance the car, overtake others, or gets on the throttle out of a corner. But only a matter, of his reaction time, and holding a rocket straight so to speak. With that been said, I’d like to add, that (as I understood it.) Didn’t focus much on it, since he can’t make it a realistic challenge, why make a gamemode in a driving simulator. That is all about letting go of a button, at the right time. (Disregarding the exploits of the transmission that is needed, and most of the time COMPLETELY unrealistic. Sorry but I can’t help but be abit blunt on that matter.) – To summon up, I don’t think Kaz is eager to promote, something that has more or less nothing to do with driving, and won’t hurry to implement it, as long as he can’t make the real challenge of dragracing noticable, which is the engineering. – Like he states, dragracing is about gettin as much as possible out of the engine, without it breaking down. Engine failures is not a problem in GT5 as we all know. Besides, this is still a driving simulator, not a “tuners championship”.
3. People point argue, that he more or less states, that they won’t look at other games.. I think his comments in this interview, was just about been polite. He didn’t want to compare GT5 to other games, since that would involve publicly pointing out errors, that they might be working on allready, inspired by other games. (Which would probably just lead to comments, saying he is stealing from other games.) And because he would be speaking badly of other games, by saying they aren’t doing whatever as good, as them. Which is just not something a japanese gentleman does.
Put you’r positive-glasses on, and you will find he is saying it is up to us, to demand something more unique in GT5, or the implementation, of something already excisting in other games. :)
Anyway, that was my 2 cents of defending PD. I still think it’s a great game, regardless of the sound of the cars, lack of singleplayer options, or the fact that WE the community, basicly demanded a release, of a game that developers them selfs, didn’t concider finnished. But still gave in to our demand. So thank you PD, for releasing a game, you weren’t satiesfied with completely, that has given me countless of hours of fun. Both when racing sports cars on Nordschleife, LMP cars on La Sarthe, in day, night, sunrise and sunset. Not to mention drifting!
What i’d like to see in the future of GT.. That isn’t already mentioned, like sound.
1. More F1 tracks, they aren’t F1 tracks, because they are boring, or not challenging enough. Thanks for Spa, but I’d love to race Yas Marina in the sunset, drift Sao Paolo race track, or take some TC cars, out on Hockenheim fx.
2. More options for customizing cars, I know this is abit of a NFS thing. But it really would be more rewarding, watching replays of hot looking streetcars, or drifting that 200sx with some nice skirts. I watch on youtube/in telly, and do in GT5. Watching sweet looking driftcars go sideways, is just not the same as watching a more or less stock looking S15 fx.
3. Engine swaps. (To a reasonable extend IMO.) call me old fashioned and boring, but I don’t think the game is about puttin X2012 engines in everything, to go fast in a straight line. But it would be nice, to put a 2jz or RB26DETT, in something like the S13, to give it that extra punch it might need.
4. More “realistic” horsepower to tuned cars, we all know the RB26DET, is capable of well over 1000bhp. So why can it only go to “near” 800?
5. *Get’s on his knees* PLEEEEASE fix the transmission exploits, one of my friends who knows I hate it, pulled out his 787b, which we race alot. “Messes up the trans.” And could acc. just as fast as me, and have the same topspeed as me (non-draft.) only using 1′st, 2′nd & 3′rd gear.
6. More DTM cars. And touring cars, like seen in WTCC fx.
7. EVEN more realistic touring cars.
8. Interior views, that actually look like the car has been stripped. Removing 200-400kg of a car, to make it as fast as possible. And you still have the standard dashboard, standard seats etc. Just doesn’t make alot of since.
9. Improve the way rain looks like on the windscreen. I’m sorry to say, but it looks downright rubbish.
10. Online events, that isn’t seasonal, but events to see who the best in the world is. Make them PP based, and make some based on either standard cars, or pre-modded cars. Say, “Rx7 event, fully modified only.” Or completely stock for that matter. Or, just based on the track. Who is the fastest on La Sarthe, in whatever car chosen? Please EXCLUDE the Red Bull’s. So we can have some consistently lasting leaderboards. That makes more sense, than monthly challenges, that won’t be played by more than 30-40% of the community at most, or not be spend as much time in, beacuse it’s “just another”.
11. Please make breaks a part of the parts dealer. :/ I don’t know if the breaks of the cars is included in PP. But really that can be what it comes down to. A RX7 FC, will never break as good as a rx7 FD. Simply because the FD has better breaks, I would like that variable removed if wanted, so it’s about the chassis really, which fully tuned cars in GT5, really is about.
Okay.. I think I got my 30 mins of sparetime killed now. Lol! Free cake at my place to anybody who actually read the WHOLE thing thrue.
(Must be collected wearing a flamingo costume, between 1:30 pm, and 1:31pm 7/5-2019. Phonecall must be given 6 months and 4 days prior to the collection date.)
After reading some of his answers i was thinking: Can i have some of the drugs he is taking? Too much cars sound so wrong, and he think they are too real?
Jordan, I believe that the questions you asked were VERY good. Thank you for trying your best to represent the overall community here, I was impressed with the validity and relevance of your questions. The problem obviously lies within the mind of this hilarious pod, Kaz Yamauchi. Not only does it lie in his mind, but also in the people around him (PD) are not telling him that he’s messing up. It is said that your REAL friends, the ones who care about you, are the ones who will tell you when you’re messing up. Right to your face. The people around you who don’t- letting a bad situation get worse, cannot be counted as true friends. It should be called into question what kind of people are surrounding Kaz at this point.
Polyphony Digital needs to hire an ‘outsider’ in a consultant role who can consistently offer them a fresh perspective- maybe something like what the fanbase is feeling combined with new (and old haha) ideas from the sim-racing industry. In other sim-racing forums around the net, Gran Turismo is seen as a bit of a joke. How I wish this wasn’t true- and it certainly doesn’t have to be. The engine of this game is pretty darn solid, and there is NO tangible reason that Gran Turismo can’t be the best racing sim on earth. The clear problem is the basic decision-making process going on inside that studio, combined with that classic Japanese pride that, as history shows, will have them rejecting any ideas from the rest of the world- to the point where they would rather commit literal suicide before suffering ‘perceived’ dishonor.
The word of the day is Perception. Kaz had better widen his, and soon- because right now most of his fanbase feels like we’re on a Mistubishi Zero ride straight into the side of a battle-cruiser. Unlike those kamikaze pilots though, we don’t have to stay on this ride. This interview marks a sad day in the history of a once-great franchise. I desperately hope that someone gets through to this man, and opens his mind to the actual, nearly-infinite possibilities that could be used to revive his beloved project. No longer should such pride hold him back.
We will not think less of you for asking for help Kaz! It’s ok!
The sounds are too real?
That’s like saying margarine is too natural.
Good grief.
I agree with you I think PD should listen their fan base take the best points and consider apply them on the game, take feedback always will make an improvement, I think they need to be open and see what factors can make their game better, we are talking about the best selling exclusive on PS3 and that is not a joke so is logical the fans will expect to have the best.
Nothing about the horrible AI that slams on it’s brakes if you are any where near it in a corner?
No questions about the “chase the rabbit” ai in GT5 that saps the fun out of every single player mode until it’s not even worth playing anymore??
No questions about forced rolling starts in GT that were implemented because Kaz would rather completely give up on ai than fix it and make it smart enough to handle a grid start??
Really? You couldn’t ask one question about that?
Kaz seems more arrogant, disconnected from reality, and clueless than ever.
I fear Gran Turismo is dead forever. I think Kaz is the problem, he just doesn’t have a damn clue anymore, and won’t even give GT the thought it deserves when creating it. He is the problem, I am convinced of that.
LOL
I’d ask him, why does the game does not take advantage of all the features on GT Mode, I mean with this why is rarely seen races using day/night transition? why some few races used weather change? why not all the time are 16 cars running? why is that the races are too short so we ca not used the pits stops on race? why there is not same qualifying system that is featured online for the GT mode races?, why can’t we choose IA cars to race on GT mode? I never seen a DLC car used by the IA, all of this can apply for seasonal events too, I mean imagine use this features during a race so you add more fun, you need to plan your strategy to win te race, change tires due weather change, learn to race the same track during night, don’t know men this game can be much more, also imagine race with two classes like American Le Mans where you have the prototypes and the GT cars run from each perspective damn that would be great…. and please for GT6 no more standard cars I prefer less cars but at least premium….
You are making the mistake of thinking Kaz puts any thought at all into the creation of Gran Turismo. He does not obviously. That is why all your obviously good points are ignored, he doesn’t want to be bothered to waste 1 minute thinking about what makes GT fun to play, let alone how to have his employees implement it into the game.
^ I’ll take you as a credible source of info as soon as GT6 is as much of a failure as GT5. It’s apparent that GT5 will not be improving, or if it is, too slowly to show much change in these flaws you constantly talk about.
But for now, I’m just going to sit back and wait for GT6, and reply to/correct any false or idiotic statements here, because as stated, GT5 isn’t likely to get much better with most of the focus being on the next game.
Although, SOMEONE has to tell him the AI algorithms are poor and flawed… (to put it lightly…)
SOOO disappointed. WHAT a shame.
I just lost my faith in a good ending.
Every answer he gives shows how narrowminded he is, how much he is living in his own world.
Kazunori is sitting on his throne, nobody dares to argue with him en he himself lost all contact
with reality. He lives in his own world en does not care about critics even though they’re from his
loyal fanbase. Without that fanbase that supported GT through more than a decade he wouldn’t
be where is is now so you Mister Yamauchi, you are obliged to listen to us.
Step off of your cloud and come to our real, the real real world.
I’m afraid that if he continues his path he will perform seppuku.
Remember, no emperor without followers.
AMEN!
He is the one who runs the company, I think he might have a more than a minute to think on what can make the game better, I can’t understand why he does not take advantage of these features if his team work hard on them, I also disagree with you because Kaz has passed through Real races so he knows better than anyone at Poliphony what elements make a race feels great, wouldn’t you like to race on this way where you have this dynamic features, I think that would give the game the aggregated value that not to many games have, but lets see what happens I am saying this from the perspective of a racing fan, I see on TV races that have this factors
Where you don’t know who is going to win.
The sound is “too real”???… Really!?
The Subaru WRX engine sound in the game is woeful!!! This to me is the best example of how bad and ‘unreal’ the engine sounds are in the game currently. I own a WRX, and I can tell you that a boxer engine does not sound anything like a lawnmower. Worst, most inaccurate engine sound in the game.
There seems to be some sort of mis-translation here, especially in the drag racing part… I wonder if Kaz actually meant too “clean” for sounds, not too “real”. I’d believe that, since the engine tones never seem to waver or stutter during gear changes or when changing throttle force… just a straight steady tone to the new rev value.
I could be wrong, though.
Agreed in everything.
Proper english translation:
” I have completely disconnected from Gran Turismo and reality. ‘Human drama’ refers to the kind of drama you humans experience, as opposed to the drama that whatever sort of creature I am tends to experience. The seasonal race events are fantastic, as we are fully utilizing all that GT5 has to offer when making them. Over and over. Yes 1000 cars and tracks with weather/time transition are available, but we need not worry about them. Did you guys enjoy the last Skyline events? Good. My Online Operations team are the most creative in the industry. Speaking of the industry, we care not about ANY of our competition. What they do, how they do it, great ideas that could be researched from from studying them- no matter how simple, will never be looked at by us here at PD. That is the most abhorrent thing I’ve ever heard. I believe our sales numbers tell the entire story, and business is good. We will keep this train of original japanese ideas rolling, until we drive off a cliff. This is our prideful way. We also start each Gran Turismo completely from scratch, even though I make statements to the contrary in silly interviews like these. Remember the hope-inducing line about GT5 being the operating system, and GT6 will be like adding software? That was a good one. Don’t worry, I will completely contradict this new statement in a year or so.. Also I want to point out that Drag Racing is a befuddling mystery to me, and all of the people on my planet. Just read my answer to that particular question again if you want to experience similar befuddlment. To reiterate, it would be very difficult to implement a straight 1/4 mile track, a light tree, and then make the cars go forward when you press the accelerator. This is ridiculous. By the way, how about those butterflys, dogs, and sheep that we modelled for various scenes in GT5? Did you all appreciate the craftsmanship on those animals? Very good. I hope to incorporate rabbits into GT6, and maybe some of you will get the ‘joke’. Ha Ha …Ha.”
(shakes Jordans hand, buttons stylish jacket, flies off into space)
; )
Kaz: You are crazy.
If you say that the engine sounds are “just too real” it’s clear that you and your “sound engineers” don’t know what they are doing. Sure, SOME of them sounds are damn right, but others (most of them, sadly) are PURE GARBAGE.
I’m sorry but the aventador sound is no where near realistic
GT5 engine sounds are quite realistic when the cars are stock. But if you upgrade them, which most people do, the cars sound nothing like the real ones. I’m thinking about getting an Xbox just for forza, if GT6 has real car sounds, it’s the only GT we will ever need
I agree for the most part. I usually leave the exhaust stock because I prefer that sound. Some cars are good and realistic. But then theres others which are totally wrong. Dodge Viper GTS-R Team Oreca’s V10 sound like they have V8′s. I’ve seen them a few times running and they’re not that Beefy sounding. Another real disappointment for me is the Chapparal 2J. That car sounds awesome in real life. GT5 have half the sound right. The V8. But as it’s twin engined it has 2 engine notes. The V8 and a 50cc engine. So it sounds like a cross between a Cobra and a moped. The best sounding car for me compared to real life is the Mazda 787B.
An option to roll down the car’s windows would be very realistic (conforms with Kaz’s realism requirements), and would allow us to hear the exhaust sound.
I didnt know everyone wondered what the car under the cover is. Isn’t it an NSX? I’m pretty sure it is.
Some say it’s the Stig’s personal car. All we know is, it’s got a sheet on it. :)
*improved
There are cars in GT5 like the 458, LFA, c63 AMG, that sound fantastic, but others like the Subaru impreza that start up perfect but then doesn’t sound good when racing, so I like the fact Kaz agrees they should design the sounds more.
I wish in the next gran trusimo 5 that when DRAG RACING and you pinks with a person and you lose you can get out of the car and it becomes the other person’s car
