Aussie Auto History Will Be a Focus of Forza Horizon 3

Forza Horizon 3 had its big unveiling last month at E3 2016. While the presentation was full of salient details – widebody kits, a custom event creator, the return of the auction house and storefronts, drones in the sky – some unexpected surprises arrived in the various interviews conducted after. One that’s sure to interest fans of Aussie metal is the promise of an increased focus on the island nation’s exclusive creations.

During an interview with Kotaku Australia (here), Playground Games Art Director Benjamin Penrose confirms the team has looked at both old and new rides. Arguably the most welcome is the first of the Ute breed, a 1951 Holden. Penrose also name-checks the 1974 Sandman, a ute (or panel van) cousin of the HQ-generation Monaro. Conveniently enough, a 1973 Monaro showed up in a Forza Motorsport 6 car pack earlier this year.

It’s blurry as can be, but the basic features point to this orange blob being the Pursuit Ute.

Those looking for newer metal shouldn’t be disappointed either. As detailed in our earlier article on Horizon 3 pre-orders, the Motorsport All-Star Car Pack will feature 2016 editions of both the Falcon and Commodore that take part in the Virgin Australia Supercars series (previously known as simply V8 Supercars). VIP members will gain access to the last-of-line 2015 FPV GT-F 351.

Utes will be available in more modern forms as well. Forum member StigBelcherStyl caught what appears to be a 2014 FPV Pursuit Ute in the stage demo that first showed off the game (watch it here, at the 2:25 mark). Penrose told Kotaku that the game includes “the latest and greatest utes from Holden”, so we should expect the Pursuit Ute’s competition as well.

Turn 10 has yet to start their usual weekly car reveals, so fans will have to wait a bit longer still before more is revealed. We doubt it will be long, however: Horizon 2’s reveals started late July in 2014, while last year’s FM6 reveals started exactly one year ago today.

This is great news, great to have something different available in a racing game, especially when they’re mostly RWD V8s :D

I’m gonna enjoy Forza Horizon 3 so much!

GT Sport can wait until two or three months after its launch for when the reviews’ll be out, we’ll see if it’s better than I think. Not too interested into learning how to drive when I’ll never drive in real-life… handicaps…

Oh nice… I hope the windows 10 store gets a version of this game. Not keen on buying an xbox but I am keen on playing this game on my PC

The game launches in September on both the One and W10 simultaneously. Exactly the same, and multiplayer will be cross-platform.

I’m a Gran Turismo guy but Forza Horizon 3 is starting to tempt me with Australian cars finally getting represented in the gaming industry.

I still prefer GT gameplay wise. But Forza’s release cycle keeps me hooked better, but not for as long.

If Playground are focusing on Aussie cars, does that mean the Interceptor from Mad Max will be DLC later on as an extension of that?

Don’t we all? With the fact that it’s going to be on PC as well, it’s not like we’re hoping for something wildly farfetched.

I also hope they will add some AC/DC music, since it would be really appropriate and even original. I can’t remember any racing game that featured this band in it’s soundtrack.

Oh, I love it. Australian cars have always been ignored a bit in racing games. Looking forward to FH3 even more now.
