I just got COD4 so if anyone wants to add me that'd be cool and i'm always up for some matches if you want to. I'm usually always free.

Free-for-alls. No idea if they're good scores or not.

Getting a little annoyed by being 1-shot killed but having to headshot or unload full clips to kill people, but I assume that's a function of player levels. Most of my kills are knife-related - and I got a 5-inna-row :D

It is sort of a by product of levels, as these open up more weapons and completing the challenges gives you the Red dot scope and ACOG scope, both of which make hitting someone a lot easier. Also the Juggernaut perk makes someone harder to kill, while the Stopping Power perk does more damage.

Personally I love the stopping power perk, combined with an accurate gun and sight will increase your kill rate quite a bit.

Good shout on the knife kills however, were they sneaky ones or face-to-face, as I personally suck at the latter.

As far as points go, the Free-for-all matches are not good points generators, but early on you are limited as to what you can play (I still play a lot of free-for-all despite this - I just like the matches); once you open them the likes of sabotage and headquarters will easily see you net 500 - 600 points a match if you are on the winning side, a very quick way to level up. Additionally once you have the challenges open they can help gain points, for example you get 100/500/1000 points for 25/75/150 kills for most weapons.

Hope the above helps out.

Have you done the private matches to get more familiar with the maps layout? It was really helpful for me.
And if you're that good with the knife right from the start, it really awesome. It'll rack you up many kills as time goes by. 👍
Free-For-All matches at the very beginning can be frustrating. My stats suffered a lot because I only played them during the first 2 weeks, been recovering slowly. You should try Team Deathmatches, they might seem confusing at the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, you'll love them. Plus, you have more chances of getting kills and won't be a target all the time as easily as in Free-For-All matches.
Also, on TDM matches, your chances of winning a match increase substantially, often it will be at around 50%, which also does good for your stats.
About the "ease-to-kill", it's sometimes really annoying to shoot quite a few bullets at a guy and then you see him start firing and killing you first. Most of the times, that happens because of the lag (invisible, since everything seems butter smooth). The best way to see what really happened is through the KillCam, as it always shows exactly what happened in real-time (without lag), and in that you'll see that more than often, the other guy was actually firing at you way before you had noticed that.
What weapons/perks are you using now?

My brother said that he camped out at the booth to the right of the ferris wheel, but that didn't really work for me. The time I got it right I went past the bumper cars to the right. I started shooting them from there. I had to move around a little and jump around when a couple of them got closer. You can also use the trees for cover.

Thanks, I'll have to give it another try camping on different spots.
I'd really like to finish the game.

But the online mode is so damn addictive...! :crazy:

magburner - Sorry I couldn't talk to you yesterday, but for some reason my headset wasn't working while in-game and I didn't want to risk leaving the online mode to fix it, only to return and having the "downloading game settings" error stop me from playing for the rest of the night.
And you're right, it was a nightmare to get in matches yesterday, I really hope they sort it out soon. I mean, literally thousands of people trying to find a match to play in, and the servers keep them all on hold for 5, 10 or more minutes at a time....

EDIT: tree'd by Scaff's post above. :rolleyes:

I've just noticed something - how do you know what my game stats were? I don't recall playing you...

I'm an alien with superpowers.
Or... I happened to be on while you were doing your first matches, and checked your stats after your 1st and 2nd ones. :cool:

Will you be on tonight? Id really like to play with you, if not more, to 'show you around' the basics and small helpful tricks and tips on some of the maps. Got headset?

I completed 1 player mode last night and then moved on to some multiplayer matches. I got murdered at first in the team deathmatch because I couldn't work out whoose team I was on.

I moved onto free-for-all, I managed to get second place in one of the matches. I want to get my stats up so I can wield a decent sniper rifle.

I will probably be online tonight I am just going to a add few PSN's.

Just head into 'Barracks' and take the Leaderboard option, and as Beerz said you will be able to see a selection of different stats for all your friends currently on-line.

I had a quick check on your stats as soon as I saw you were playing, I also sent you an invite at around 1am, but the match did fill up quite quickly.

My most used sniper rifle (and still it's very scarcely used) is the very first one, the M40. It's easily (for me) the most accurate of them all and has some very decent power, you can get 1-shot kills with it and since it has very little recoil, it allows for a 2nd or even a 3rd shot on the same target to compensate a miss or two.
Other than that, the R700 has a bit more recoil, but is more powerful (not by much).
Too bad you can't use silencers on sniper rifles, so sniping in the game, even with the UAV Jammer gets you found out on the first shot you fire.

Speaking of snipers, last night I was on a TDM and this guy on the other team was using a Barret .50Cal on the District map. :eek:
He had it equipped with the ACOG+Bandolier+Stopping Power and was getting LOTS of kills, mostly 1-shot kills as he was able to, in a fraction of a second, get a perfect headshot even without using the L3 to steady the aim, because the ACOG has very little wobble compared to the sniper scope, and as the distance between players was so short, it all happened pretty fast.
In the end, he got a 34-13. Truly excellent and unique, as far as all I've seen so far. Very nice to see, except the part where he blew my brains out at least 5 times during the match. I pulled the trigger on my M4, started firing, and a moment later, I was dead from a single bullet through the skull.

Another thing I'd like to share is my new favourite combo for maps with closer fights.
It's my MP5 equipped with an ACOG+Bandolier+Stopping Power+Steady Aim.
I really love it, it's amazing how fast you can drop a guy with this weapon, even without changing magazines I've dropped 3 guys with it as it has a lot more power than what's foreseen on the graphic charts.
And with the ACOG, you get to kill guys at a longer distance you normally would with this weapon, if you can tame your trigger finger well enough. Truly awesome, namely on Ambush and Vacant (District is pretty good for it too). 👍

Does steady aim make the ACOG scope completely still?

In terms of sniper rifles, I wanted to have a sniper with a relatively fast fire rate. I noticed I cam across such a sniper in 1player mode, and my guess is it will also be in multiplayer. The first sniper is bolt action if I remember correctly and is slow between shots. It would be nice to get a scope for an assault rifle, and perhaps a silencer.

I accepted the invite, but got "Cannot Connect to Lobby" straight away. :(

Unfortunately it's happening a lot at the moment, fingers crossed the forthcoming patch will sort it out.

I should be on again tonight so will try and get a few matches together, do you have a headset?

Don't forget to invite me, I get lonely sometimes... :(

And I don't get how you guys (Stevisiov90 & Famine, his evil twin) don't recognize friend and foe on the TDM's. Basically, your team mates have their names in green, enemies' names don't show unless you aim at them, then they'll show in red.
Other than that, the uniforms. If your team has Marine Corp uniforms, you must kill the Iraqi soldiers (or whatever country that is on the game). Simple as that.

Now be nice Beerz, when you first start out on TDM's (particularly if you have been playing a lot of free for all) you just shoot at anything that moves. Some of the maps don't help sometimes either (such as Countdown with the smoke).

As for headquarters matches on Shipment, well then it difficult to know what the hell is going on full stop, let alone who is on which side. :)

:lol:

I used to have the exact same problem in the beginning, must teach young grasshoppers from the start.

Famine - TDM matches helps you to - while not being on the edge the whole time - see how other players move around the maps and you actually learn a lot in those.
Free-For-All matches help you to improve your aiming speed and practice the fine art of taking cover while searching for the enemy and improve the surprise effect on the opponents. But the latter screw up your stats big time when you're less experienced.

As a matter of fact, I've been seeing A LOT of new players on TDM's lately, there's barely a match in which my team doesn't have at least 2 players ranked 1 through 8, mainly 1's.
So, lots of new players right now, let the carnage begin. :D

Oh yes indeed, particularly with the Martyrdom perk and claymores, lots and lots of click......BOOM......+5/+10 since Christmas day. Almost too easy at times (still not going to stop me).

I've never, ever used a Claymore actually. I suppose it would give you lots of kills since they still catch me out occasionally. :ouch:

At first with the team deathmatch, I thought anyone with a name beacon above their head was on my team...until some of them started shooting at me. I did work it out quickly but that was after a few easy kills for my opponents as I strolled up alongside them. I have been playing fre-for-all quite alot today and finding myself in second place at the end of the match is quite a regular occurance which is good news. I have yet to get first though I have just been one or two kills short may times. My win:loss ratio must be devastatingly bad, but finally my kill : Death ratio is starting to pick up nicely, a long way to go yet.

I am level 6 I think now with the weapon customiszation , or class thing is now unlocked. I am wondering has anybody got any recommended setups. So far I run two setups

C.Q.C Heavy: standard light machine gun, Saw I think. No modifications. Barreta m9 standard, extra health, extra damage, 3 times special grenade (stun)

Long distance setup: Ak-47 (I can't stand burst fire on the m16) grenade launcher attached (although I have unlocked laser sight, the grenade is more useful) Barreta m9 scilenced. more damage. Deep penatration.

The Ak-47 is rubbish slow fire rate loads of re-coil combined with the lack of laser sight means I cannot see who I am shooting at half the time. BUT the grenade fitting that comes with it is extremely effective at dispatching camping attackers in thick cover, or in above rooftops, its much better than throwing a normal grenade as it travels further, faster, and explodes on impact making it easy to aim, and hard to dodge unlike standard grenades.

Ussually when I am out of grenades I pick up another weapon. Does anyone else use the grenade launcher or find it abit of a waste.

I spotted one on an upper level of that town you help the tank drive through in a Free-for-all.

I shot it. The guy who planted it came running out of the room and I headshotted him.

Take the Red Dot Scope as the weapon attachment and then the 2 x RPG as your Perk 1, it gives you a much more effective package overall. Remember by taking the underslung grenade launcher you use both the weapon accessory and Perk 1. The RPG is very slightly slower to equip, but for me is a better balance.

Personally I love the M16, but it does take a bit of getting used to with the 3-shot burst, but its much more accurate than the AK, particularly with the ACOG sight, which effectively turns it into a medium range sniper rifle as well.

Which is why I always plant mine out of direct line of sight, make them difficult to spot and shoot at; plant them in pair and always wait for the 'mark' to come to you. I love claymores (particularly on Countdown - watch the hanger side doors).

They are also invaluable in Headquarters matches, as they give you both a first line of defence and early warning of the direction of an assault, get on a team that use them well and holding a HQ (particularly if its the upper floors of a building) is much, much easier.

I used to use them a lot, since they not only cover you better than a team mate most of the times, but the guys they kill cont as your kills, not someone elses.
Nowadays, I don't have them on any of my classes, as I've became less of a camper and "don't have time" to plant Claymores. :lol:

At first with the team deathmatch, I thought anyone with a name beacon above their head was on my team...until some of them started shooting at me. I did work it out quickly but that was after a few easy kills for my opponents as I strolled up alongside them.

You're becoming me now!!!
Exactly what happened to me at the beginning, word by word.

I am level 6 I think now with the weapon customiszation , or class thing is now unlocked. I am wondering has anybody got any recommended setups.

*snip*

Does anyone else use the grenade launcher or find it abit of a waste.

There's not really such a thing as a recommended setup, everyone likes different things and that's great.
My most used setups are:
RPD+Red Camo+Grip+Stopping Power+Bullet Penetration
M4+Blue Camo+ACOG+Bandolier+Stopping Power+Bullet Penetration
MP5+Digital Camo+ACOG(or RDS depending on the map)+3 Frags+Stopping Power+Steady Aim(or Martyrdom)
and less used nowadays:
G3+RDS+Bandolier+Stopping Power+Martyrdom

As for the grenade launcher, I've never been able to use it properly, but it does get you some pretty easy kills sometimes, especially when you have 2 or more guys right next to each other.
But from what I experience, some people rack up an impressive amount of kills just using them.

I spotted one on an upper level of that town you help the tank drive through in a Free-for-all.

I shot it. The guy who planted it came running out of the room and I headshotted him.

:scared:

You're mean. Seriously.

EDIT: I only really used the AK-47 on my very first matches, it's enormous power is only surpassed by it's stupidly low accuracy, which makes it almost useless at medium to long range fights. There are much better weapons overall.

As promised (and sorry for the double post but I wanted to put this on it’s own post), here’s PART 2 of the MAP INSIGHTS.
Today we start off with:

CROSSFIRE:
Another one of my favourites.
Medium-small map with plenty to do, lots of places to hide, but not many where you can feel secure.
One of the maps where I find team work of the most vital importance, since going anywhere alone (unless you’re facing inexperienced players or are just extremely lucky) equals suicide after a little while.
I also find it one of the hardest maps to decide which weapon to use, since it very quickly turns from a medium/long range fight (where you need a powerful but very accurate and reliable weapon to get your kills fast before they hide again) to close-quarters fire fight, where that kind of weapon is usually less efficient due to their weight, and you’d be better off with a sub-machine gun for fast-action-kill-or-be-killed-thing-stuff.
What I do on this map is basically bit-by-bit advance. I clear a room, get in there, get aware of the enemy positions, try to take a couple from there, go to the next building, assess the situation, try to take a couple more… The problem is when your team mates don’t think like you and stick behind.
As I’m not that good, and after being surrounded be enemies with my buddies watching, I can only hope to take at least one with me (that is, of course, after I tie a red ribbon around my head, oil up my muscular body – after taking the top of my uniform off - and run up with guns blazing shouting “”ADRIAAAAAN!!!” with a crooked mouth), only to die right after.
Also, one of the maps where grenades (any kind) are of extreme importance, and where the art of throwing them well and using them wisely (check magburner’s write-up on this subject) makes a really big difference.
Another important thing is, when going from building to building, always be ready to bump into an enemy and have your knife at hand – meaning right thumb half-pressing the R3 button, this will save you many times and rack up easy kills.

Usual spots where people tend to camp:
Windows and balconies (sp?) basically all around, but mostly on both the building up on the street, from where you can see most of the map and have a clear sight of all the street and many other spots including the inside of some ground-level rooms where people usually think they’re safe (of course, all this also makes it a really hot place to be anytime, as you’ll then have a target mark all over yourself), and also the one building with no front walls on the opposite side of the main street, which might seem less safe, but has less entries (allowing you to be safer with a couple of well-placed Claymores), is more isolated (providing better aware of the surroundings at all times), and it allows you to get prone (making you a smaller target for everyone else, and sometimes really hard to spot if you’re on the correct place – almost invisible from ground level), while still enjoying the view and racking up kills.

Spots where you definitely don’t want to get caught camping:
Crossing main street is a suicide act during most of the match (not even talking about camping, which would be downright stupid);
The ‘Dead-Building’ (how I call it). It’s that ‘hidden’ building on the lowest point of the map, when you go down the main street and turn left. It’s almost useless on 90% of the matches, it doesn’t have any front walls to protect you and if you’re caught there, there’s nowhere to run or way to get out – at most, you’ll be able to keep one opponent under cover, but more than that and you’re as good as dead;
On the ‘Ruins’ – The upper part of the map, left of where you start (when you start on the top part of the map) is definitely a bad place to be almost all the time. You may shoot one, maybe two guys at most, and after that you’re dead with almost nowhere to cover;
On the lowest part of the mat, that little grassy bit near the smashed car – only stay here for short periods and still, only when you’re certain all the ‘bad-guys’ are on the upper part of the map, because in here, there’s at least 10 spots from where you can be shot – it looks a lot safer than it actually is.

OVERGROWN:
One of those where experience counts the most, also one of my favourites.
The ‘fresh country air’ feeling is awesome on this map, makes me wish there were more maps using this kind of scenery. It’s the best map for the sniper’s ghillie suit to work properly, but also ‘compensates’ that by not having many areas with large sight lines.
For the very “noob” that isn’t perfectly familiar with the map’s layout, it’s just terrifying (at least for me it was) to be on such a large map and only feel relatively safe inside the buildings scattered throughout the map. What I found out and it’s been working for me, is something that might feel like suicide when you first play on this map: don’t stand on the same spot for more than a while, try to go from building to building, advance through the map, assessing possible threats before you move - definitely uncomfortable at first, but after that it becomes natural.
Like said above, many people get their sniper Classes on this map, but it isn’t as much of a problem as with other maps (namely countdown which has huge sight lines and grassy edges), as a decently organized team can easily counter this by having at least one member calling them out of their hiding spots while still under cover and their team mates shoot or bomb those ghillied bastards away. :D
Don’t be afraid to cross the dry river to get to the other side, a quick glance will usually tell you if there’s anyone waiting for an easy target and the sprint is short enough to keep you away from trouble.

Usual spots where people tend to camp:
Attic of the ‘main house’, either through the hole on the north wall or the lateral windows (the one with the machinegun is the most used, as you can only take him out from the inside or, if on the outside, on an almost frontal position facing the window, which, if the other guy’s holding the mounted beast and aware of any move, can be equivalent to suicide);
Ground floor of the same house facing the dry river (perfect sight of any oncoming enemy and good cover);
On any of the small bombed out rooms (of the building adjacent to the wooden bridge, facing the dry river);
Sniper sweet-spot: the southwesternmost (sp?) point of the map, the grassy area near those trees, taking cover behind those metal zinc sheets near the stone bridge.
Small house near the above referred location, but on the windows facing north – great cover with a fairly good view to the barn;
The barn – although it has it’s weak points, namely the side entrance from which you can sneak up virtually undetected. Also, Claymores will be rendered useless here, because it’s too dark and the laser beams will be easily spotted.

Spots where you definitely don’t want to get caught camping:
The small wooden house next to the hay field (you’re visible from many angles, and if feels as if it’s made out of paper when shot – even without the Bullet Penetration perk);
Anywhere on either the stone or the wooden bridge;
Anywhere on the gas station – You get pinned there really easily and escaping alive will be a very hard thing to do.

_____________________

As always, suggestions welcome.
And thanks to those who liked my previous write-up, glad many of my opinions are shared by other
members on this issue.

The AK is chronically bad at long range, now and again a pot shot works but normally I just follow them or launch a grenade at distance. Quite ironic because I called the class with my AK in 'long range' :lol:. The problem with following people is you are often cannon fodder for snipers as you unsuspectingly cross the street to get close enough for a mid-range kill. I have found the grenade-Ak combo is really effective on levels such as pipeline, and especially countdown, where you get people camping around the corners of the hangers, pop a grenade in switch straight to bullets and follow in for stragglers, you don't need to see them, which often means you can get them without them even knowing you are there sneaky I know. Ideally I want the m4 with a laser scope as it seems just as effective at long range as a sniper rifle with scarce recoil, but I have yet to unlock it yet. The main problem with the grenade launcher is that you only have 2 shots, but I find it a very effective two shots indeed. I am going to experiment with the RPG, as scaff said, however I have a few questions.

How quickly can you switch from rifle to RPG? as the grenade launcher is almost instant which is what I like about it. Perhaps more importantly for me specifically; does the RPG displace the slot for your pistol? because I often switch to the pistol instead of re-loading my rifle when locked in combat, rather than finding cover to reload then re-engaging the enemy.

[edit] Nice post beerz, I am still learning the levels so that will come in very handy.
