they aren't nearly as violent sounding in 5P either

That's why when I fired it up to play for a bit, I chose the Tuned Clio for the extra violence. Got it set up to run in the GT class. Making laps around the 1:50 mark, so within a second of the pole sitting time. 👍

You trying to push me over the edge to do it aren't ya?! That sounds very fun. I may just give in, I inevitably will be making laps on there.

Finally got the DP mod for GTR2 (Only for the Doran JE-4 as the Protoracers look like crap) and did some laps around Daytona. Car felt awesome around there, though I kinda wish there was an updated version of the track with the redone Bus stop chicane.

I realized 5P left a bunch of stuff out on the infield, like the first hairpin, just inside of that is the bike track hairpin. It would be nice to use all the runoff that actually exists there, not just hit a barrier when you go wide. Close enough though.

I can go through the pit out in 5P, though, to me, it seems much more cramped in Prologue than in real life, at least from what I noticed.

It's not that they were left out, but that PD modelled Daytona before those features came about. Suzuka and Indianapolis aren't quite up-to-date either.

I had a great time at the race and met with quite a few professionals who also sim race so that was cool. But by far that race was miserable to attend it was wet at the beginning and then cold with bad winds the rest of the race making me shiver even with 2 jackets on.

I'll upload the pictures I took from the race today hopefully by tuesday. I didn't realize I took over a thousand pictures (didnt know the memory card could hold that many) so I have to go through them and pic out which ones i want to put up on here and facebook and the sorts.

but seeing as this may take a few days heres a few quick picks to show. (note:2896px × 1936px image size when clicked so not 56k friendly)

You should really be thanking my father that he let me borrow his super expensive camera and lenses. Sadly I couldn't seem to get the camera to work to well during the night hours seeing as it had a selection for night shots and a selection for fast motion shots but not a selection for both. When cars are moving at 100MPH during the night a selection for both would have been nice :P

No doubt, thank you Mikey's father!. Are people always dumb in the infield? I was about to call the Sheriff on the one dude, I've like seriously never experienced stuff like that at a race. Did you get shots of the heritage cars lapping? I'd love some quality stuff of them on track, and my girlfriend had the camera at that point. So I've got nothing from them except when they were sitting in the fan zone.

No sadly we got there just as they where on the track running so by the time we got off the tram and situated they were already done.

I saw the results on Speed. I mentioned that I loved the simplistic paint scheme of the #9 Daytona Prototype, but congratulations to that #9 for winning the big one at Daytona. I'm also proud of Mazda in GT. I saw the newer RX-8 models at the Houston Auto Show, and I'm sure I would have congratulations to the Mazda boys on a win like this. Next race isn't until March for Rolex Sportscar Series at... Homestead, I believe.

Time to go off-topic. Now a lot of people mentioned a 24-hour race in the Gran Turismo realm. I asked in my blog if you would be okay with Daytona Prototypes in GT5. I've criticized the Daytona Prototypes as they weren't all that impressive of race cars. Even if you don't like the DPs, you have to respect and honor these machines.

Well, they aren't as flashy or fast, but they still put on good racing. I'd be fine with them in GT5. Just as I'd like a 24 hour Daytona race to go with the hopefully returning 24HR races at La Sarthe and the Nurburgring. And if we're really lucky, the 12 hours of Sebring and the 24HR race at Spa.

That's an interesting experience LSX, with all those weirdos. Every racing series/sport etc has its share of trashy fans

Theres no question in my mind the 24 Hours of Daytona will be in GT5, along with the Indy 500, Daytona 500 and others. However if PD doesn't secure the Grand-Am license then the race will consist of normal Le Mans prototypes which would be really scary. A Audi R10 could probably lap the Daytona road course 15+ seconds faster then a DP.

But what do you guys think about Justin Wilson's decision to duck into the pits from the lead after he felt a quick vibration and the car squirmed a bit? That cost them 2+ minutes and the race.?

Over cautious or the right move

At that point it was probably the right move. Seeing as it was so far into the race the cars where starting to go it was probably better to be cautious then to continue on and have the engine go on you. The same question could be brought up over Johnson pulling off the track and shutting it down after he thought he might have felt the engine seize for a second. Its a good thing he did because if he would have kept on the engine probably would have gone.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, I mean, if it was going to break, it would have. But at the same time, it could have been something minor that would have popped back up braking down into the infield and ended in a big accident. Though, I would guess that the car being quiet going through the bumps of Nascar three and four where they are the most pronounced anywhere on track, that it would be nothing. I bet they are gutted though knowing that likely cost them the win.

^
I'm hoping PD adds a 24h Daytona Road Course for GT5.
That would be epic.
Same here. :)

:nervous:Was there any hot cocoa on tap? Or any hot beverages at the concession stands for that matter.

I would be for it. I just hope we get to choose the chassis and engine for those cars. And I hope the RX-8 race car they use as the RX-8 LM in GT5 is the #70 Castrol RX-8. ;)

There was plenty of hot cocoa! I didn't get any though...

:sly: However I did run home for blankets, two more jackets and dry socks. :sly:

I did accidentally leave my wallet in my other pants, which is why I got no cocoa...:guilty:

Edit: Wow, I guess after watching the line the Grand-Am and Conti car's were taking through the infield helped me a lot. I always felt like I was leaving something on the table with the second hairpin after the kink, now using the line I saw them taking, I feel much quicker through there. :D! First try netted me 264th in the BMW Tii race car, even though it's slower than a GT class car.

From my experience watching daytona protos, these things can hustle. They're not like indycars of course. I've seen them power out of what I believe was turn 5 at thunderbolt, a slowish corner, and they blast away quite nicely to say the least.

:tup:Awsome win for the action express #9:)

yea those prototypes may look big and heavy but man can those things move.

but i got the first 200 pictures uploaded on my facebook and its taking forever. i still have another 641 to go but it looks like it will take a few days. if anyone knows of a site that will upload a few hundered photos in one go with out failing let me know until then heres the link to my first album of 200

They hustle for sure! They aren't turbo diesel engineering wonders, but when one fires up in front of you and smokes the tires, or accelerates out of a hairpin or does pretty much anything, they are hard not to like. They sound awesome too. And IMO look damn cool, especially the Crawford and the Coyote.

There was supposedly a company that years ago was assigned with making the Grand-am Licensed game, but it seems as if nothing has happened with it and supposedly the license lasted to 2009 so its possibly still up for grabs.

Well, I'm divided on this myself. On one hand, it might have been overeactive but on the other, after seeing the 02 car go out the race it seems right to do as this isn't the Lexus Powerplant they've been used to since 2004, this was something new. It could be seen both ways though.

Yeah, the Crawford DP04 is one of the best looking DPs out there, along with the Lola. In my mind, thats my idea of what a DP should look like.

Is it that hard to exit pit road? I could understand when the 10 did it since it was on cold tires and a still wet track, but in daytime in dryweather?

Also, Bobby Labonte is still in contention for a win in GT despite running out of fuel. He was leading.

I think they were having problems not only because of cold tires, but the the track temperature was cold too. There was no sun to heat it up and the ambient temperature where I live, about an hour south, was only in the forties, maybe fifties when it happened. It couldn't have been much warmer up there. Most of the racing they do is in the summer, they probably aren't used to driving on a cold track. If you saw the outlaps you could see how they had to creep, they were getting passed by GT cars.

As for the #1, it was a crappy situation. Like the announcers said, if it would have happened after pit in and they would have had to drive all the way around the course, they may have realized it was nothing by the time he got around again. But I do think he made the right decision. They still finished second and if they really did have a problem and kept going it would have been a lot worse.

I remember a few years ago Jeff Gordon hit the wall exiting pit lane.

Its probably the toughest pitlane exit in the world, your turning very hard on fresh, cold tires and the wall is a couple of feet off to your right.

The idea that it was 40, 50 degrees, a green track, and cloudy didn't help

No doubt, those outlaps looked painfully slow. Would scuffed tires speed up the heating process? Not that I think there were any left when they went to the day time, just wondering though.

Too bad about pit out, because there is not really a way to change it except move the entrance for the infield over, and widen it out a bunch. It really is hard to navigate, even in games.

I don't think there is any need to change pit out, I think the drivers just need to be patient and take it slow. This is one of the many things they should remember for next time.

So, Alex Job Racing, Level 5 & a couple others are defecting to the ALMS LMP Challenge class...

I also read a rumor that Gainsco is done for the year.
