But *are* they trying to appeal to those fanbases? My reading of the proposed rules is that they are trying to find a way to force the title fight to go down to the last round.

The fact they've implemented a playoff system and they're now trying to force the championship fight to the very end proves this point, in my opinion. Just like stick and ball sports (NHL, NFL, NBA, etc) you try all season long to qualify for the playoffs (the 26 first races), then they select a certain number of teams (or drivers in this case) and while it's a bracket ladder instead of an elimination, it's effectively the same system; people get eliminated until there's only two left to fight for the championship. This works well with those sports because teams that are eliminated pack up and go home, they're not playing alongside the final two. Doesn't work with motorsports (aside drag racing) if only 10 cars are eligible for the championship (this is merely an example), and at every playoff round you take one out until you're left with 2 cars. No team and sponsor that's taken out will be happy to see their exposure pretty much vanish out of thin air, no fan will want to watch only 2 cars go around for 400 miles.

At the same time, they're trying to fix the championship, they're trying to plan the excitement. These things happen by themselves, even if you try to plan it ahead it doesn't mean it'll work, and most of the time it's an absolute failure.

There are other ways to improve the product, instead of changing up the points system and the championship race; perhaps getting rid of certain racetracks, holding shorter races, adding more variety in the racetracks, perhaps even adding a bit more international flavor...

Let's face it. The sport's changing. Much as I'd love to go back to the '03 system, it won't happen. The average viewer doesn't enjoy it. Look at the positives, sure it's gimmicky as hell, but it should be fun to watch. Perhaps consider it a new era, for better or worse.
I'm not sure the ratings freefall supports this sentiment.

They've also been blind to the fact that the Truck and Nationwide series, under the same 43-1 point system has had close championship battles without needing silly gimmicks.

What they should have done back at the end of the 03 season was change the points system, not change how drivers compete for the series championship.

The average viewer isn't an idiot, he just isn't blinded by nostalgia like we are. Honestly the new points system (And recent changes in general) haven't been that bad, and in some cases are an upgrade to what we had

Its not nostalagia, its having a gimmick that's taken away the racing and replaced it with "a show". We don't want a show, we want racing.

Allgaier has finally been announced as the driver of the #51.

Allgaier named driver of #51 for Phoenix Racing: Phoenix Racing announced that Justin Allgaier will be the driver of the #51 BRANDT Chevy SS during the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Allgaier, who finished fifth in the 2013 Nationwide Series championship points, will be a candidate for the NASCAR Rookie of the Year award. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime and I intend to make the most of it," said Allgaier. "I am very grateful to Harry Scott and BRANDT for having faith in me to compete against the best drivers in the world." BRANDT will be the primary sponsor for the #51 for 21 races during the 2014 season. The agriculture retailer and manufacturer of agricultural specialty products has been active in NASCAR since 2011 and sponsored the #51 for four races in 2013. Joining BRANDT on the car are The National FFA, TradeMark Nitrogen, Nutrients for Life Foundation, Precision Tank and Grigg Brothers. Together, these partners are supporting the only true ag-focused car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Allgaier, 27, joins Bobby Labonte as teammates at Phoenix Racing. Labonte will drive the #52 for several races in 2014, including the season-opening Daytona 500.(Phoenix Racing)(1-21-2014)

BK Racing also announced their drivers as well as a new number.

Bowman, Truex to drive for BK Racing: BK Racing has signed Tucson, AZ native Alex Bowman and Mayetta, NJ native Ryan Truex to pilot the team's #23 and #83 BK Racing Toyota Camry's and compete for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Bowman will drive the newly renumbered #23 entry and comes off his rookie season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series which saw him win two poles and finish 11th in the final standings. Truex made four starts between the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series this past season. Both Bowman and Truex tested for BK Racing in the NASCAR Preseason Thunder at Daytona last week and have already begun to create a relationship with their respected teams and crew chiefs. Bowman and Truex will make their team debuts in the season-opening 56th annual Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway on February 23. Dave Winston will crew chief the #23 BK Racing entry with Alex Bowman while Dale Ferguson will crew chief the #83 BK Racing entry for Ryan Truex. BK Racing has also finalized an agreement with Borla Exhaust as a primary sponsor for the Daytona 500. The deal signifies a multi-race sponsorship for the 2014 season. More details to follow this week. In an effort to better align with long-time partner Dr Pepper, BK Racing will renumber the #93 to the #23 in 2014. The number is synonymous with the regular Dr Pepper's original 23 flavors. However the #93 will remain with the team on a part-time basis.(BK Racing)(1-20-2014)

Unfortunately, even with 8 ROTY candidates, only Dillon and Larson have competitive rides.

Kinda think Austin Dillon has abit of an advantage as he had far more seat time in a cup car then the others.

The Blue Deuce will be yellow for 8 races in '14.

The most Decent paint scheme for cup so far (though its hard to make a black stripe on the bottom look terrible).

I think that the number on the car would look better with an outline rather than just being one color. It's still a good paint scheme.

Would be funny to see Pennzoil 22 and Alliance 2 in same race. May not be able to differentiate between the two.

Okay, here's my prediction on the Chase changes.
When Brian France comes onto the podium at Media day and announces the changes, the clouds above the building will part, the roof will blow away, the heavens will open, and Big Bill France himself will descend from the heavens.
He will look around, think of the ramifications of what his grandson just said, then will go up to the podium. He will then give him the slapping of a lifetime, announce that the Chase will keep existing over "my dead body" (Bob Pockross will try to interject and point out that he is already, in fact, dead, but France will yell "SILENCE"), and appoints Jeff Green to take Brian's spot. Then, Big Bill will ascend back to the heavens, the roof will come back, and the clouds will close.
Brian France will then continue speaking as if nothing happened and the media will imagine nothing out of the ordainary happened and thus won't report the heavenly encounter.

I loved the old MGD black & gold car, they need to bring it back. Oddly enough I think it might benefit Miller to do so. Sales of MGD are way down, and they have no trouble at all selling Miller Lite.

On an unrelated note, booked my plane tickets and rental car for Daytona next month.

Had to go back and look, but I thought it looked familiar. From the 2013 NASCAR Thread...

Looks good, but I'd do it just a bit differently
Session 1: 15 minutes, 26th -43rd and slower eliminated, leaving top 25.
- 10 minute break -
Session 2: 10 minutes, 11th - 25th eliminated, leaving top 10
- 10 minute break -
Session 3: 5 minutes, top 10 positions and pole settled
- 10 minute post qualifying interviews etc -
Entire session fits perfectly in a 60 minute window

He was only off by a bit. Well done Earth.

One change, splitting up the most laps lead BP's to increase the emphasis on domination

Points per race - 43-1 (No points for a race you finish less than 50% of)
Bonus Points - +5 for the pole, +3 for leading the most laps, +7 for leading more than 50% of the laps in a race
Chase Picks - All who win a race plus those in the top 10 in points that don't have a win
Chase Seeding - +1 point for every place over 10th in the points you were pre-reset, -1 for every place behind 10th you were pre-reset, +1 point for every win
Eliminations - If you fall more than a race and a half behind the leader (So 65 points), you are eliminated from the Chase and your points are reset to pre-Chase totals plus what you have earned in the Chase
