Congratulations FP!
IIRC GTPlanet started out as a Yahoo Group before Jordan made it a standalone forum. So it's possible they racked up 1000 relatively quickly on GTPlanet.net, too, with the original YG people that jumped over.
It was an MSN group, but yeah
A quick look at the user list says after two months of GTP starting, membership was sitting at 281 (I counted May 14, 2001 to July 14, 2001). The 1000 member mark was hit on August 4, 2001. That might not be perfectly accurate though - banned members don't show up on the User list, so it's likely to have been a day or so earlier before hitting 1000.
Still, that was a pretty big swell in three weeks time!
Wow! 719 new members in 3 weeks is pretty astounding after only 281 in the first 2 entire months. What happened between July 14 and Aug 4?
According to Wiki, Gran Turismo 3 was released on July 10th, for the NA market, and the 20th for Europe. That might have been the reason why.
The owner of GT3.com unexpectedly linked to GTPlanet, and that drove a tremendous amount of traffic. It nearly overwhelmed the small shared hosting plan I was using to host the site, and it was my first baptism-by-fire experience of managing the site's infrastructure through its first high-growth period. I had no idea what I was doing!Wow! 719 new members in 3 weeks is pretty astounding after only 281 in the first 2 entire months. What happened between July 14 and Aug 4?
