Round 2
Nations Cup
Was keen to get back into some proper high speed racing after slugging it out in the MX-5 at the Red Bull Ring, and halving my points with a disastrous second attempt. I was certain I’d be able to pull off a top 5 finish at Brands Hatch, driving my usual weapon of choice - the V12 Aston. Sure enough I qualified 2nd, but things that appear too good to be true often are. I only made it as far as Sheene’s corner before clipping the grass and pirouetting into the barrier, falling to 15th as I desperately tried to get the car facing the right way.
The pressure was on to get back into the top 10, but I managed to deliver, slowly climbing into 9th place by Lap 6, as just about every other car in the field also slipped off on the exact same section of track. I pitted for hards around Lap 7 to hold me over until the final few laps, when I planned to unleash the soft tires with a lighter car. I came in for the soft tires and a quick refuel on Lap 12, having climbed as high as 3rd, and immediately hit the ‘Do Not Refuel’ button. Devastated, I emerged in 5th with 4 laps to go and less than 2 laps of fuel to do it with. I raised the fuel limiter and nursed the car around to avoid wasting the tires on a dud lap, and pitted back in for the refuel. I was back in 7th, but several cars were immediately within reach, and one by one I managed to claw the places back. A Supra ahead tried to block my pass at Pilgrim’s Drop, knocking me onto the grass. But Karma came back to haunt them as they braked late into Hawthorn, running wide onto the grass and allowing me to slip by and take home 5th place, disappointingly close to 4th across the line.
Manufacturers Cup
Qualified 3rd in the V8 Vantage, and started on soft tires to give me as much pace as possible in T1. By Lap 4 I was putting the heat on the WRX ahead of me, moving up to 2nd. By Lap 7 I was first, but having gone out on softs I needed to pit for the required medium tires. I merged back in 3rd on Lap 9, and began pushing for 2nd place.
I passed the GT-R in 2nd on Lap 12, but was only the start of the fight to hold position against the Nissan, with us duelling for 3 laps. By the final lap I let the GT-R pass into T1 on purpose, before putting the pressure back on and drafting them as they had done to me. Sure enough I passed by at the hairpin and managed to drive off with 2nd, although still several seconds behind first.
