FIA Manufacturers Series Round 22 - Gr4 at Kyoto Park
Had a forgettable first race. Forgot to change my livery to the FIA series white, after running the inverted black look in the Nations race last round. Was bummed to be assigned #1, because that means less points and a little more of a hit for a bad result, but it was cool to see
@CurbHog and
@Lewmatic on the grid. Nice race, HiortinTexas (4th)! I hope to actually make a good race with you worthy of your good YouTube videos one of these times, but this was not my race...
(First race, forgot to change back to standard white livery... but at least it looks cool with the #1 on it!)
Got totally held up in qualifying... why can't people figure out how to behave on the out laps?! WT*!?!? THE LAST TURN ON THE OUT LAP IS NOT THE TIME OR PLACE TO MANAGE THE GAP IN FRONT OF YOU! And... this race, the KNUCKLEHEAD in front of me was the FIRST car out, I was second... WHY would you slow up in the final sector on the out lap!?! To hold me up? It was all downhill from there as I never got a clean spot after four tries to get in a clean QT, and ended up with only one 2 minute window at the end of the session to make due with whatever I could-- Q17, stuck behind the same types of drivers that would hold you up in qualifying, ruined by plan to run fast on Softs and gain some ground as there are not many passing places on this cool track... and finished 12th after a forgettable race. (for the record, two TT's were 1-2, a M4 was 3rd. in a low A lobby.)
Wasn't sure I'd have time to race again, but was able to, and it really worked out well. Q5, after a pretty competitive session. Had planned on going with a one-stop this time, but with a good QT and starting position, decided to go all-out and gain what I could until I had to give up 6 seconds to take on the Mediums... worked like a charm. Was top-3 most of the race, pitted with 2 to go, to get a clean run on the last lap, and braced for a final showdown to keep a podium spot after pit stops cycled me back into 2nd place...
@afc5150 lurking in the background... he drove a good race and was right behind me all of the second half
But a Subaru and McLaren were on my tail, and the Subaru in particular was fast. I had to concede my spot to him as he outbraked me at the chicane in the valley, but when he went past, the McLaren saw it as an invitation to barge through and doored me, sending us both off track, but he stayed in front of me while I got a penalty, which meant I was toast.
@afc5150 was the lucky benefactor, as he was on my tail for the last half of the race and was able to get by me when my momentum was uh... interrupted... but I have to thank him for being a great wingman, because it sure looked like if he could have move the guy aside for me, he was ready to, on the remaining half a lap! Good race!
So despite getting robbed of a hard-earned podium, it was a good result, with my best points haul of the season even in 5th, and I'm at a new peak DR as well (having sat out of the Bathurst race). Hope everyone else had a good round as well, cheers.
Almost had a well-deserved podium sticker to add over my rookie stripe again, but not this race...
I'm sure there are different opinions, but if you watch the whole replay of the race, which I posted on GTS, you can see how clean I race, and how many times I give and take, to avoid contact. Then after a great clean race, I get doored by a dive bomb that costs me a podium (and a bunch of FIA and DR points) well, it sucks. Oh well, you race and learn...
