With the addition of another family SUV, the Renault Captur, I am still saddened to see that PD adds all these cars but does nothing in the game with them. They just exist.
I understand that people like to see their real-life car in the game - I would like that, too. But just having it in the game is only halfway there if you can't really do much with them. In an open world driving game I could just roam around, but GT7 isn't open world.
So racing it is. But these cars naturally are pretty slow and you can't tune them much either, especially the hybrid ones, so racing them feels kind of pointless. You could pit them against each other in a "family car cup", and that's exactly what I am missing in the game.
This here is the biggest problem. It’s much less to do with
which cars are added, and everything to do with the fact that there’s sometimes nothing to do with them with the toolsets the game offers - despite said toolsets being quite large and wide.
It’s even more annoying because as recently as GT6 cars with CVTs (Demio as an example iirc) could have traditional fixed or custom manual gearboxes installed in their place. That’s not an option in 7, and even if you have a lot of power available to you through upgrades the locked CVT box doesn’t let you get anywhere. I’m surprised there isn’t more available to hybrid and EV powertrains, given in the same game we’re able to ram 6L V8s and 16.4L W16s into cars that normally only hold 2-3L 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Surely depending on the car you could either change the transmission out, or if the hybrid isn’t a driveshaft-based unit, have independent motor and battery systems as performance upgrades.
Many of the SUVs just end up as high-riding heavy slush boxes that can’t get much more than 30-40% more horsepower over their stock output, have little to no special GT Auto options, and are just fundamentally not very utilitarian in the game (which is
extremely ironic given the name of the class

). VGTs also have similar issues, but at least they’re fast and (usually) pretty to look at.
I’m not really sure what can be done given the track record of just not really anything changing to make more functionality and connectivity out of content in the game. Think about how long it took to have Group 1 and 2 events added, and the fact that 4 years in,
there’s still some track layouts that still aren’t used in any campaign or mission events.
