Gran Turismo 5: What You Need to Know

gran-turismo-5-subaru-wrx-sti

Some people were quick to lament that no “hard facts” regarding Gran Turismo 5 were released at last week’s E3 show, but now that we’ve had some time to carefully pick through the HD trailer, you can see we’ve actually learned quite a bit.  Much like we did with Gran Turismo PSP: What You Need to Know, let’s put the pieces of the puzzle together and find out exactly what Kazunori Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital told us…

The Facts

Near the end of Sony’s E3 press conference, a brief video of GT5 was shown to the world, formally introducing the game to the public for the first time.  Series creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, had earlier been on stage to introduce Gran Turismo PSP, but did not speak about the PS3 game and no other facts or figures were officially released.

NASCAR and WRC

gran-turismo-5-screenshot-25As we can see from the prominently displayed logos in the trailer, GT5 holds the official licenses for both NASCAR and the FIA World Rally Championship.  What’s that mean, exactly?  Aside from the obvious fact that stock cars and WRC rally cars will be in the game, it is still unclear how these racing series will be integrated within the classical framework of a Gran Turismo title.

New Tracks Revealed

If you know your race tracks, it didn’t take long for you to pick out the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway paddock in the E3 trailer.  The other new circuit may not have been immediately obvoius, but the Top Gear Test Track was first brought to our attention by amar212 (yes, that guy!) way back in 2007.  Now, two years later, we’ve finally got our first look at two LMP cars on the Stig’s home turf.

gran-turismo-5-screenshot-6The time of day at the Top Gear track may also be important – it could be our first look at day/night cycles and dynamic weather, something which Yamauchi mentioned in an interview with Audi last month.  Let’s not get too carried away, though.  As was noted by commenter Terronium-12 below, Laguna Seca was also played at dusk in Gran Turismo 3.

Another new track, Toscana, is set in the Tuscany region of Italy.  The starting platform is particularly interesting, as it indicates a realistic, point-to-point rally stage (as opposed to the dirt circuits found in previous games).

Car Damage

damage01

In the “crash heard ’round the world”, this Subaru WRX STi was first to demonstrate GT5’s long-awaited damage modelling.  The image pretty much speaks for itself – if you’re interested in frame-by-frame analysis, check out this topic in our Gran Turismo 5 forum.

It’s Berne alright: stick “Marktgasse 69, 3011 Berne, Switzerland” into Google Maps for the spot in the video. Berne’s tricky for driving, and I’m saying that as someone from London! Tram tracks, cobbles, high bridges over the river – can’t wait to race it. Nice to see an original and less obvious choice for a city track.

  2. Jason

when i was in japan I was skipping through a magazine with some gt5 screenshots in it, one was a screenshot of a map. it was the map of the track used in “Best Motoring” for touge challenges. hopefully that will make it into the game because then you could compare your times to those of the guys in the dvd’s!

  3. Carlo Lengler

I too saw the list with the 10,000 car´s. But I strongly feel that´s a Hoax. Im a gearhead Brazilian, and one of those car´s they listed is a Brazilian car thar went in MANUAL production in the 60´s or around. Not a real classic, kind of a “behind the shed” manufacturer.
I have some diggin around for facts, and appears that only 1 of that model still around today, in the hands of a private collector.

I think its really hard for a Japanese company to have heard of a car that even the nationals dont know, let alone go searching for it to render and real specs or speak with the family owner of the abandoned brand for legal purposes.

Well, the game is surely taking his time, let´s hope that the others 9,999 car´s really make it into the game ;)

  4. STEPHEN M

    @jereweeti

yeah thanks it really helped. the hungarian site must have blind ppl behind it…gt5 looks graphically phenomonal to forza 3

  5. Jack_uk

I can’t wait to have a crack at the Top Gear test track But I think the main feature that does it for me is damage. The attention to detail is incredible. I just hope its included on all cars. I think we will know if it is in next months issue of OPM if they actually get their hands on it

  6. jereweeti

‘Q’ stands for a quarter of a year. 12 months / 4 quarters = 3 months. Now we are in the Q2 in most countries but this varies between cultures. Q1 2010 would basically mean January-March of 2010. Hope I helped.

  7. STEPHEN M

@bern comments. is bern where all them JGTC cars in the video are revving up at the start line? if so, its looks bloody amazing. whats does ‘Q’ mean cos its confusing the hell out of me. is it a certain point in a year?

  8. Jordan

@Chip: Nobody forgot about them, but they only took place at night. The ability to race every track and watch the time of day turn to dusk and then to night is something completely new.

  9. GT-FOR-REAL

    Upcomming games list

    Q4 2009

    FORZA 3

    DIRT 2

    MODERN WARFACE 2

    Q1 2010

    GRAN TURISMO 5 !

    ALIENS VS PREDATOR 3

    ALIENS COLONIAL MARINE

    BATTLEFIELD 3 …. 2010

I think they will release the game if its done in detail so release Q1 2010

  10. STEPHEN M

@10,000 cars! i come across the list and appears to be a fake….but its a wish list. 400, 000 polygons and 6 months it takes to create each car…10,000 is an insane figure

  11. SFC

The Euro cities in the video look like Florence where all the people are walking around and the other one with the tram car looks a lot like one of the sections of Prague where Nissan’s “The Run” was filmed…

  12. Daniel

In my country (Portugal) the game is already on stores to be reserved, the launch date is december 2009. I’ve already reserved one! Can’t wait…!

  13. STEPHEN M

wasnt smokey mountain or something like that; in Gran Turismo 3 had races at dusk? I mean the dark atmosphere with car headlights on that circuit? also worth mentioning that Peter Solberg now runs his own team and drives for it with Phil Mills still co-driver-i only found out by watching WRC: access all areas on Dave (Dave-tv channel known for Top gear repeats here in the uk). i agree-i hope there is a release date this year. interested in the comment about 2004 races such as ‘chamonix 2004’-it could be to with how delayed by a year and a half the game was (Gran Turismo 4) and PD decided to leave that in the game. correct me if im wrong any1?

  14. Bilbo

hmm Kaz still has to include all those features that his team saw while at the Forza event and then make another CG trailer featuring them. Damn then he has to work on the cockpit mode and sound effects so that they’ll be more like NFS:Shift.

THEN he has to make time to go kick Turn 10’s dog and trade “yo mama” jokes with Dan Greenawalt. Now people want him to get this game out by the end of 2009? Have mercy, people.

  15. Wheeler

Not sure if this has already been bought up but you mention a new track ‘Toscana’ I belive this is in fact the old Citta di Aria circuit we are familiar with which is set around the streets of Assisi in the Tuscany region of Italy. So it’s probably not a brand new track.

  16. Joe

I read on ign that the producer said that the game was ready to launch now, so it must just be sony waiting for the holiday season so they can get the max sales

  17. name

    release date?
its absolutly pathetic how long its taking them to make this game.
than forza 3 comes and claims they have everything GT5 has and more, theve spent less time in development and its comming in october.
in a interview with IGN months ago ign asked will it be pushed to next year (2010) and one of the devs laughed and said no it will definetly come out this year.
well heres my 50 saying thats a load of **** and we wont see it till next year.
im sick of sony announcing titles than later on the year 90% of them are pushed back enough is enough release the dam things deliver what you promised otherwise your never going to catch up.
i thought they would of lernt there lesson with home………. looks like i was wrong.

  18. Joecitizen

What’s the point of having more than one nascar track? They’re pretty much all the same anyway. They should spend more time developing tracks with left AND right hand corners…

  19. RAugie

oppylocky, the audi is actually an R10 TDI 2008 model. I have the exact picture of the same audi above my computer screen. Also, can anyone comfirm the custimization of the cars?
What extent do you all think we can custimize the cars?
They better have Virginia international raceway, Road Atlanta, and Sebring in this game though.

  20. caribbean topdriver

totally forgot about red rock valley lol……… granturismo has the all time greatest tracks, cars, music u name it…… cardigans ” MY FAVORITE GAME” sweetest theme song ever.

  21. Arathorn

““When was the last time you’ve ever seen a Gran Turismo race….at dusk” Gran Turismo 3 – Laguna Seca. :p”

    Red Rock – GT2 :D I loved it!

  22. obi_one

now did everybody forgot KY saying this to one of the GTP members :

” -Me: because of what i know is that the team still didn’t think even of targeting a release date for GT5 and to be honest i dont believe GT5 will come before 2 years which is a long time/

-K.Y : “2 years hahaha, no no. dont worry much about that its gonna be sooner than expected”

K.Y: “smiled” we will anounce it in our website before there is any update. but we will anounce the information only before an update is goin to be released in a couple of days like what we did in spec 3. even GT5 will release at the same way “laughing” we will do every thing as a surprise. ”
    its all here http://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=111878

  23. oppylocky

The Mazda 787B is 100% having a race with an AUDI R8 LMP. Also I do not think that the track they are racing on is in any way part of the TopGear test track since when have there been runway lights on the topgear test track. BTW Kudos for having a digital driver of Petter Solberg as that really made my day. One thing that GT5 has had over the other games is movement of the camera during the replays because the only game that does replays as good as GT is the codemasters guys on GRID. damn that game made watching replays way too enjoyable!!!

  24. mike

didn’t polyphony say it was pretty much finished and they could put it out now if they wanted, but i don’t mind them taking there time on it when it comes out it will be awesome,u have so many racing games in one i not buying dirt 2 because GT5 rally will be better, nor there F1 game because it will be better on GT5, and who knows what all other racing types there will be,and has anyone seen the list of 10,000 cars said to be for gt5.on zerotohundred.com and not that forza isn’t any good but 400 cars 100 more than F2 and really Forza 2 should have been called Forza 1.5 because there really weren’t that many new cars, and all they mod parts were the same from the first game, so hopefully they add new content. so u can paint your car it’ll just be the same cars u painted from the last one, and a few extra.but gt5 will not disapoint it never has.

  25. drew

If you look close enough, you can see Daytona on the wall of one of the Nascar shots. Will they have the entire Nascar circuit or just the big name tracks?

  26. Hunter

and they are not releasing it till sometime around christmas this year……and I bet that those people over at SCEA dont even care whats at that ideas website and they wouldnt listen anyway

  27. Hunter

Why dont they put the whole nurburgring on gran turismo 5??? there almost a whole extra 10 kilometers to it

  28. thomas

One thing i did notice for the nascar…

    2 or 3 jeff gordons, 2 michael waltrips, 2 denny hamilins….

  29. STEPHEN M

i want to know the final car list, also track list! i also would like to know of a release date! also, i would like GT5 to kick some ass (you know what game im refering to here-LOL)

  30. Zuel

Guys we need to get as much info on GT5. Jordan can’t do all the work now. I’m going to work on the tracks with some help from master once I ask him.

  31. STEPHEN M

well when we saw ‘Chamonix 2004’ for example in GT4, remember japan had the release in very late 2004 so that could be the same for this year but for the rest of the world! good work polyphony digital…i dont have a ps3 but i shall get one…1st game-GRAN TURISMO 5! i am still excited to see the final car/track list and screenshots and videos in the future!!

  32. Zuel

Great work Jordan alot of the tracks were spoke of in new threads but your SM closed the threads after two or three post. Please put a leash on them so this wont happen any more and we can freely talk about things.

  33. alex c

they neeeed to release this, nowww, i smell it coming though, i smell them talking about it next month in official playstation mang, which ive herd’, then releasing a week after, shok.!

    we can but prey.

    the last guardian
    god of war 3
    ace combat 7
    twisted metal 5
    gran turismo 5

    need to come out, nOW!

sony would have it sewn up. but, they wouldnt release so many blockbusters to close to eachother so as not to infringe on sales, how gay for the average joe who just wants these games. and sony to be triumph’nt, once again.

  34. Belifant

I’m Swiss and I agree, it could be Berne, it looks like the typical old part of a swiss city, though I haven’t been to Berne for a while now, i’m not 100% sure.
It would make sense, cause Eiger is part of the Berne Alps.

  35. MarcoM

Neil, Codemasters have the F1 licencse for the upcomming years. Of course Sony can get them as wel. But the it would not be a GT game anymore imho.

  36. Neil

Having NASCAR and WRC is a sign of more things to come. Really hoping they put Formula 1 in there. I reckon F1 in GT5 would really set the benchmark no doubt. :)

  37. jereweeti

MarcoM, GT4 had signs reading 2004 even though the game was released in 2005. Allthough I wish it’s coming this year. =D

  38. Haiej

Dont watch the YouTube version of the Trailer. Download the 1920×1080 version from the Playstation Network, using the PS3.

Around 00min:35s, when the Citroen Rally car (with Total and Red Bull logos) is slowly stepping down of the stand, you can clearly read “Rally Toscana 2009” at the top of the stand.
Could that be a hint of the release rate of Gran Turismo 5 ?

  39. MarcoM

From the movie itself I wouldn’t have guessed the scene with the LeMans cars was at the Top Gear test track. But if it is, that’s cool.

  40. Jordan

Excellent point, Terronium – I didn’t recall the track being that dark, but it was certainly at dusk. I’ll edit the post to mention that.

  41. Terronium-12

“When was the last time you’ve ever seen a Gran Turismo race….at dusk” Gran Turismo 3 – Laguna Seca. :p
