GT Academy Set to Return in 2013, Sources Say

Since the Middle Eastern and South African regions of GT Academy concluded last month, Sony and Nissan have kept quiet regarding plans for the competition this year, but that could be about to change.

According to sources familiar with the competition, GT Academy is set to return for 2013 and could be bigger than ever, with this year’s regional Race Camps reportedly set to occur over the course of 5 weeks in September.

Considering 2012’s major international regions were formally announced on April 16th of last year and qualifications began on May 1st, it’s likely the 2013 round of the competition will be coming very soon.

Assuming Gran Turismo 6 sticks to its estimated 2013 release date, GT fans could be set for a very exciting year ahead. Stay tuned!

My guess would be Silverstone as the track and the gtr gt3 car as the final time trial hoping they run the tt for a full month rather than 2 weeks much fairer for people who work lol

    1. DITCHLINE

Also as fairness goes allowing a convicted felon the chance as anyone else if you read the fine print if you’ve made mistakes in your life NOBODY will ever give you a shot even if you are a great racer–change the policy!!!!

  2. tpark103

DS3 50.00 USD, new copy of GT5 19.99 USD, the chance to become a professional race car driver priceless. Bring on GT Academy…

  3. SavageEvil

Anyone want to bet GT6 has some sort of mode that plays out a bit like GT Academy? I see it happening for some strange reason and some deeper immersion with the cockpit view is going to be added at least on the PS4 rendition of GT6. I hope that the cars used by the graduates make it in and hopefully PD adds the GT 3 class cars and the whole Super GT roster of cars, not sure I care about DTM anymore as all the cars look exactly alike like F1, but ALMS cars would be great to see with 40 plus grid count.

Seeing as GT academy is a success, why not run it again. Making it bigger, hmm how much bigger should it get though? What would be great is if the graduates actually get to come out and talk about their whirlwind career change from gamer to race car driver that would be pretty good viewing and informative and also educational for the youngsters.

    1. Pit Crew

Bigger could mean the regions previously omitted will get their opportunity.

      PS4 rendition of GT6 ???

    2. Amac500

Incase you weren’t informed ALMS is gone at the end of the season, merging with Grand-Am. The new series is USCR. An ALMS contract would have been unlikely anyhow because Forza holds it. I happen to like DTM cars and I think we should premium DTM cars before we think about a full Super GT field. Actually I would like Australian V8 Supercars before that. Mostly I have soft spot for indycar :D The competition is incredible and although different looking cars are nice, ya gotta respect a series like indycar where the drivers make the difference. Plus indycar is the only car I could see being fun on any track in the game. Oval, permanent course, street course, everything but dirt! Plus if they are going to have the Indy 500 in the game then give us some freakin indycars cus running the Indy 500 with LMPs just feels awkward and wrong, lol.

  4. v123moto45

I think it should be open, everyone needs a chance to see how good they against the rest of the world

  5. Hentis

I wouldnt be surprised if they used the same type format as 2012. That looked to be pretty popular with everyone. The design of academy 2012 program seemed “modular” where as it could be easily changed with different type cars, settings tracks etc etc. Quite possibly the same type disciplines as 2012 but on different tracks. But we will soon see. As for any hope in hell of winning that. I dont, I just do it for the fun factor. All you little kids in the “I want my hacked cars back” corner. Just deal with it and move on in life… GET over it!

    1. brianblaze

This is probably where the split between GT5 players is… I have never been interested in GT Academy, nor do I know too many people who are but I could see how cracking would make you guys angry. Maybe they will call GT6: The Academy and then we can all understand which direction they are going with this game.

Gotta stand up for the dudes in the corner :)

    2. Amac500

Amen Hentis, the hackers are absurd. Just to think, if PD didnt have ti take time fixing the hacking we might have some news about GT Academy already, but we couldnt start it while hackers could cheat it. As much as I wish I had the stealth Mercedes Benz SLS AMG (not hacked, just the normal car) I’m proud to say I never hacked :D And I the end of the day, I agree, people should go into the contest with the mindset of having fun. If you advance, hey that’s awesome, but most won’t so might as well have some fun!

    3. brianblaze

I can’t help but feel like this page says everything about this game and the people who play it. I was playing 24 hours a day and played mostly online with friends just messing around. Short races, Drifting all that good stuff.
I feel like maybe this is the direction they are going for in this game and maybe future GT’s and why it is such a big deal that people cracked.
I was always hoping they would go more towards having unique creations and just racing for fun kind of like a weekend thing.
They want to see how you compare to someone who plays the same track with the same car day in and day out. Which is more of a career in racing thing.
I have things to do and that to me is what turns games into WOW type games… AIN’T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR DAT! lol

Seriously though it is good to see where they are going with this game at least.

    4. Hentis

To be honest you cant forget that they have pulled out at least two successful racers from kids off the street. Jaan and Lucas to name but a few. So they have done well there. I respect that. I don’t respect the people that hack because its the “thing” to do. I like winners not cheaters. Yes the “kids” have found a novel thing to do with GT5 but that’s not what its about.

    5. Pit Crew

Jann M, Lucas O, Jordan T, and Bran H. Think theres 1 more.

brianblaze, I just can’t see your point. I can say GTAcademy is popular with some, a waste for others but thats why participating is optional. Its not like GTAcademy is new, and your not knowing many people being interested along with your own lack of support for GTAcademy doesnt define its influence on the GT5 Community as a whole.

A true race fan can appreciate the “Rags to Riches” saga that encompasses the GTAcademy storyline, one of my favorites from NASCAR was Alan Kulwickis. but to each his own. No point razzing on the Academy because PD attempted to fix modding. I read some old (4yrs) post from gtplanet before GT5 was released, and the dialogue from those fans said nothing of full customization featues as a make or break proposition for purchasing the game.

    6. brianblaze

I think it’s more that expect my games to grow more then finding ways to get us to feel like we are competing against the world. I get what you are saying we all love the bum turning to CEO though. I just have always hoped for GT5 to add so much more customizing. Honestly 4 years ago I wouldn’t have expected that much but since January I saw what we can do and how easily we can do it I feel like anything but adding those options to the game is back-tracking for me.
I have not heard of those people you have mentioned except for Alan Kulwickisand and that’s just because I have a brother who is a huge NASCAR fan. I feel it is the seriousness of this Academy and the idea of it that is slowing down GT from completely blowing Forza out of the water of course this is all my opinion.
Because in the end I don’t care about the racers I am here for the cars. Period.

    7. Pit Crew

^Lol well like I said to each his/her own. GTAcademy though isnt the problem, nor a solution. Its an opportunity, and quite voluntary.

Jann, Lucas Bryan, and Jordan were GranTurismo players that succeeded in previous GTAs, and are now involved in Nissans various racing ventures, and finding great success for guys that were once “PS controller Jockeys” like many of us, but thats irrelevant now as you only care about the Cars, whatever that means.

When was PD gonna add these Customization features in? The game was notoriously criticised for being incomplete sure, but 3 years ago no one was pushing for body off mods. PDs trademark car building model was tampered with and they fixed it. Their not backtracking doing GTAcademy this year over allowing Mods. GTAcademy is a tradition, and GT5 isnt the only game with Online leaderboards that put yours or my scores against the world.

I think its sad that your faulting the Academy for GT5s shortcomings, but admonish the hackers as heros who showed us a deeper way to customize, albeit was against the TOS. How you figure GTAcademy is whats holding GT series from overtaking Forza as a serious Racing game is…Puzzling. If anything many of the recent and future driving titles are conforming to PDs model of a true driving/racing title.

Just like life, you get rewarded with what you put into it.

    8. brianblaze

I am just speaking as a mechanic who hangs out with other mechanics who I guess are not hard-core gamers in the sense that they would never back up a game company like you would.
On another note they are biased towards the cars they like and so I can see how you would be biased towards the games you like. I am not trying to say hackers are awesome at all actually and if you knew what you were talking about you would know they are crackers not hackers but I forgive you. The problem is the options are there and the reason to not let them free is because it creates too many problems trying to monitor everything for leader boards and creates unfair advantages all over the place. Which leads to the academy.

And when I say I am here for the cars and you don’t understand that is exactly what is starting to be lost in all this. I play to hear turbos spooling, superchargers whine and V-TECH kick in lol all while having a less arcade feel by actually having to break into turns and such great things that are realistic. The inline 6’s and V8’s to glorious 12 cylinder monsters… THE CARS… sigh :)

    9. Pit Crew

Well thats on you, that you minimized your fun factor on GT5 with just listening to Turbos spool up lol. Your biased to the activities that you like so as I say, you get out what you put in.

In my world Cracker is a racist term I choose not to use, plus I hardly need your forgiveness, and I go to the Hybrid threads and see the term Hack being used consistently because thats what it is. Dressing a pig in a dress, is still a pig.

The customization options you wanted were never in GT5 from jump street, but you still bought it (im guessing) now your dissatisfied because PD regulated the hybrids, and somehow its GTAcademys fault. Did you not get GT5 because you liked it?

Im just trying to figure out why, if GTAcademy is of no importance to you how you figure in all your wisdom that PD supporting it, is a Backstep for the series. Guess you just gotta blame something.

    10. brianblaze

So because a million people call it hacking… when it isn’t it makes it true? There are lots of words with 2 meanings some with even more! And why do you keep saying you get what you put in? Yes if you do anything 24 hours a day you will get better but what does that have to do with this argument?

I wasn’t blaming anything before because I figured it was just PD doing what all the crying people were asking but if you look at why it bothers people leader boards are the reason. That’s all I am saying.

Anyways This argument will go nowhere but at least I know I am not the only one who feels like this. Sadly I am probably one of the most polite people who will even bother wasting time writing on a GT5 fan site about why a lot of people are still crackin and how it’s too bad no solutions are being made PD just continues doing what they do.

      Here’s hoping to GT6

  6. Lazy Liquid

I´d trade all the GT Academy since the 1st steps for having back my hacking customization options.

    Period.

  7. Amac500

I hope they use the kind of cars you would drive if you were to advance out of the videogame. You know, like lower level Formula cars all the way up to the LMP2 cars.

    1. Pit Crew

Im not that optimistic we will see much changes to the Academy formula as far as the cars go, especially the LMPs.

I see a Juke, maybe the R33 Skyline GT-R and the other 2 Usual Suspects.

  8. Flagmo-T

with those amazing Race Games coming out the over the Spring/Summer/fall is going to take up all my Driving time guys . I’ll guess i’ll be back when GT6 arrives – But i will still run some of the seasonal and timetrails ( I think ) :P

But Great Racing to all of you, ANd i doi wish you all the best Race experience ever, and please do push yourselves to the max :O)

  9. gtrx251

I want to receive prizes immediately and not wait for the end of the competition as it was the last time. Please do not GT Academy 2013 WAITING simulator in this time.

    1. Amac500

I hope they at least give us all the prizes right away instead of waiting all summer. They can still do special events for each car, but I’d like to have things right off the bat, like the special suit from last year. Also I wish the suit and helmet could be separate pieces, not one outfit. If they do the special events again I hope they have out something for getting gold in everyone of them. I got gold all the way through the Academy events and the specially events but got nothing for that effort.

    2. gtrx251

They should include some special prize for the best 100 or 200 or 250 participants. I took the 150 position after the final 7-8 round in the Russian region and received nothing. It was very disappointing:(

    3. Amac500

Yes! Spreading prices for how many ever finishers is great. Like how they were doing the suit last year. The top 5,000 could get a special suit and helmet, 5,000-15,000 get something slightly less special and so on. It all depends on how many people play from the numbers point. I know here in America it was popular. Spreading little prizes like special cars and suits through out us what they should do.

    1. Lococurling

Maybe a worldwide event, for everyone who own the game. So, qualify all the leardboard screen and make a mega event to choose the tops. Just a suggestion…

  10. Imari

Can we have Australia and New Zealand included again this time please? We may be on the arse end of the world, but we’re still quick even from all the way down here.

  11. Amac500

What track(s) could we possibly get? If we got Motegi lat year I’d imagine there will be a new track this year. If its expanding maybe more. I bet ya we get the Shanghai Circuit because Kaz said he was traveling there to see about adding it to GT5 like a year ago. I want a new American track badly though, come on Sebring! :D

    1. Quakebass

This doesn’t necessarily mean new tracks… Don’t get your hopes up.

I’ve put myself in a mindset to see very little new GT content until GT6 comes around.

    2. Amac500

I doubt they’d use an old track for the final TT though, they don’t want to give anyone who knows the track already the advantage over somebody who doesn’t

    3. Soyuz 77

Willow Springs is not a very good test for skills imo. there would’nt be very much to seperate the lap times.

    4. Amac500

Willow Springs could be fun, maybe they’ll give us that when the Corvette is released because wasn’t it in a C7 Corvette video? Idk I got my money on shanghai even though I don’t care much for that circuit. It would be cool if they gave us a track like Sonoma or Valencia from GT4 though. Idk, something.

    5. Pit Crew

@Soyuz 77 One could say the same for Motegi if your talking full course, but out of 7 track configurations, just like motegi im sure their would be a skills challenge to test and separate laptimes. Streets of Willow? Horsethief Mile? Its even got a Kart and Oval Configuration. IMO i think we would be thoroughly challenged, if that Course made a Cameo.

    6. Amac500

Oh man Pit Crew, of the final round was all off Willow Springs that would be crazy! Like 7 TTs and they add up your ranking numbers from all 7 and low number wins. Like if you were 2nd, 5th, and 4th your score is 11, if ya get what I’m saying. Then nobody would have time to fully master a track anyways when you have 7 to worry about, lol.

  12. Amac500

I hope those 3 race cars in the picture are all included in the competition too. That open top LMP2 would be my baby, lol, drive the hell outta that thing, I promis :)

  13. Peelster1

I just hope that this time you can import your replay files from GT Academy 2013 into GT5. I saved my replays last year and exported them out to the PS3, but I can’t watch them now.

  14. Soyuz 77

If GT Academy had another season, I think it would be awsome… but I agree with those who are hoping for better/newer cars. Maybe even include the Zytech LMP that Ordonez drove last year at Le mans as a special prize car.

  15. loftrash

Greeaaat. Another year of a summer with a DLC drought, lack of updates, and lack of interesting news regarding GT5 & GT6. Can’t wait for this!

    1. R1600Turbo

You’d rather PD release a horrible game every year that takes you 3 hours to beat like everyone else? You’re lucky they’ve kept up with GT5 as much as they have over it’s life span. Usually companies update the games for a few months after release and move on to the next. People should be more grateful.

  16. Roxa_p

I hope it will be more fair this time. Not everybody got time to practice full time. Maximum 2 hour run for each challenge. That way whe all have to give our best for 2 hours. But who am I ??

    1. FerrisBueller78

This makes sense to me. I remember playing it all day, and eventually I got up to 72nd in the U.S when it was all set and done. Only needed two tenths but I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I didn’t have so much time to keep trying.

    2. nascarfn

I see where your coming from but i also diasagree if you cant find enough time to try and become a real race driver than how bad do you really want it… if you think you actually have a chance then call in sick for three days cause you can pay that off really quick once you start racing

    3. Roxa_p

taking some day of from work is possible, but whit 3 kids running arround makes it hard to concentrate. Some people got a famaly. I want to win like everybody, but the chances must be equall. Affraid you wont be fast enough after 2hours practice nascarfn?

    4. Amac500

I disagree with Roxa_P. Opening for 2 hours isn’t quite fair for the same reason you first mentioned, not everybody has the time. Last year during the second event I had to go in a vacation with my family, but I was able to get my gold the night before when it first opened. If its only open for 2 hours people in many parts of the world will be left out, and even if it goes by time zone the people who go last have the advantage because they’ll have the ability to review video of others who ran it and be able to learn the course. Best leave it the way it is.

    5. Roxa_p

Open for 2hours is possible.. when you enter the time starts.. when you leave it stops. so other time you can continie untill the 2 hours are finished. its as simple as that.

    6. Amac500

I still think people would have the advantage of seeing video of it before they enter. I know that’s what I do when I want to find time on track.

    7. Pit Crew

^Agree about the videos, because one done by GTP member Tidgney helped me get final gold for last years GTAcademy. Round 8-5.

Im not totally for limiting how much practice time is available. Seeing how so many of the top regional contenders have some level of Real world track experience and the licences to prove it, I know my chances are slim so I just do it for the fun and the Collectable cars.

With that being said PD could limit everyones attempt total by their log in time, when they fire up the GTAcademy demo. So if you come home from wherever and start GTAcademy game at 10pm you got till 12am to complete.

    8. HuskyGT

No matter how hard you try, there is virtually no chance you’ll make it. I know where I stand so I won’t loose my time with this again.

Although with all my good intentions, I wish you good luck.

  17. nascarfn

i am 16 which is under age, but can i do it if i show that i have a drivers license a racers license and my parents approvel? cause if so im actually gonna try this year and i also live in Canada

    1. Quakebass

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that you need to be 18 and over to register…

I’m 16 this year, but I don’t have a license yet. I probably won’t have a REAL chance at entry until two years from now…

  18. GTP_SniperWolph

    System boot…
    …..Loading Race Files….
    Racing Mode Enabled:
    System Check………
    Racing Wheel loaded.
    Mind set to Competition mode.
    ……Loading……..
    GT6 content pre-ordered…….
    System Awaiting Input…..

  19. Mr_Hansen

It’s amazing for young talents that Playstation and Nissan are doing this. I just hope that Denmark can participate this time around. I was just under the eligible age for partition in the 2010 GT Academy, when Denmark was included, and since then DK have been excluded from the competition..

  20. KYD302

Would be nice if Nissan wasn’t the only Manufacturer doing it this year. An that would lead to more then the same 2 cars all year. If they put them in four or five different cars it would show who has more skill. I want to see them in a rwd car with over 650hp to see how they do because rwd with 350hp is alot different then with 600 hp an sure the GTR has over 500hp but it’s also AWD which doesn’t hardly ever get loose in the corner. If Porsche Bmw Ford GM SRT or Ferrari got into i think it would make it much more entertaining.

    1. KYD302

The reason i picked the brands i did is because they all have multiple class race programs ranging from D1 to WRC then who knows maybe we’d see a Rally Driver come out of it.

    2. Quakebass

…This is kinda the NISAAN GT Academy… It’s sponsored by Nissan… I doubt we’ll be seeing anything other than Nissans here.

They could try more variability, like Jukes, Silvias, etc.

    3. Amac500

You new here? We all know we can’t get Porsche because EA holds the licensing agreement. SRT isn’t an actual car company it’s just a performance badge for Dodge. Lastly, as the others said, it’s called Nissan GT Academy because its a deal with Nissan, it’s to become a Nissan factory driver, that’s all.

  21. another_jakhole

It’s really great to hear that the camp will be five weeks long. It can be taken a whole lot more seriously, imo.
