Since the launch of GT6, a team of mechanics has been re-building Mario Andretti’s first race car, a 1948 Hudson, as part of the game’s “First Love” campaign.

The entire build was live-streamed on GT6FirstLove.com, the highlights of which are now available here on the site.

andretti-hudsonNow that the car’s complete, Mario Andretti himself has been re-united with his “First Love” – the car that started his storied racing career – and he had the chance to drive it on a dirt track, just as it was in his first stock car race back in 1959.

For the rest of us, we’ll be able to drive the ’48 Hudson in Gran Turismo 6 when it becomes available in the game this Thursday, December 19, 2013.

The “Reunion” video linked above actually starts with a special segment featuring Takayoshi Kawakami, the Director of Car Modeling at Polyphony Digital. Takayoshi shows and describes the process of digitizing cars for Gran Turismo games, which includes thousands of photographs, laser scanning equipment, and a dedicated sound recording team.
