GT Academy 2012 Rounds 3 & 4 Now Available, Attracts Half a Million Players

The third and fourth rounds of GT Academy 2012 have just been unlocked in the free downloadable mini-game which is hosting the international competition. As expected, the new rounds bring faster cars and more technical driving challenges:

Round 3: Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II (Current Leaderboards)

  • Rotary Corner in the Madrid City Course
  • S Curve at Suzuka Circuit
  • Continuous Corners and Elevation Changes
  • Variations of Corners
  • Maintaining Stability in High-Speed Sections

Round 4: Nissan 370Z (GT Academy) ’08 (Current Leaderboards)

  • The Nurburgring’s “Kallenhard” Section
  • Low Speed ‘S’ Curve with Changing Radius
  • ‘S’ Curves 2
  • Suzuka Circuit’s “Spoon Curve”
  • The “Variante Ascari” and “Parabolica” at Monza

The new rounds kick off just as the GT Academy mini-game achieves increasingly impressive milestones, now boasting over 500,000 players who have driven nearly 40 million kilometers.

There’s still no sign of Twin Ring Motegi, which our community discovered earlier last week, but it likely won’t be featured in the competition until the final round.

As always, stop by GTPlanet’s GT Academy 2012 Forum for more discussion, analysis, hints, tips, and conversation with other competitors. Good luck to all of you in these new time trials!

I have been using PS3 pad because there’s not enough room for a wheel. I have tried to get the best times but I can’t keep up and I am pushing real hard on the X button. I have decided to wait until the later rounds and hope that I can get a high enough ranking.

  2. speedy_2

I really couldn’t care less about doing this. I did the first 3 challenges in round 1 and watched the #1 replays. They all exploit the fact that this is a game. There is not a real race driver challenge here. Haven’t played it since.

  3. Quakebass

I just got to round 3, and I nearly threw a rage quit trying to beat my friend’s times on Suzuka and Sarthe… The Madrid Ring was a bit difficult as well. I didn’t enjoy the Skyline GT-R ’94, either – it was a little understeer-y. I still haven’t finished Round 3, but I’m looking forward to Round 4 and the 370Z.

  4. GLP

Should pad drivers/users really be in the academy? What they gonna do if they get through to finals and get in a real car? Take the steering wheel out and hook a pad up. Its good how they’re so quick in some events tho. Twinkle fingers.

    1. Quakebass

Thats where they start eliminating people; those who can’t drive with a wheel are likely to be eliminated first. Plus, everyone who qualifies in the final round should have a drivers license, so obviously, they’d know how to drive.

    2. inmyshadow

You haven’t taken a look at the stats on the leaderboards. There was a guy in the top spot yesterday from Japan with a DS3.

I check out the top 10 for times. I load the top spot’s ghost replay to help find the real line and give me thing to race against.

    1. DuskTrooper

The lighting used in GT Academy 2012, is the same lighting that is used in GT5. Nothing changed graphically between the two.

  5. EVODUDE999

I was 98th in the world on 3-4 for the 1st hour …. then more people played…now im 500+ lol

    1. Quakebass

Read the old articles… It’s so much simpler than us having to explain everything. Simply download, and play. Unless you mean to win GT Academy, you need to be (I believe) 18 years or older, and have a drivers license. You can still participate, though.

    2. NewCadillac

If I’m honest the info kinda sucks and doesn’t explain much. How do I win? I got great real world driving talent, but can only get in the top 500 in the game.

    3. Quakebass

Simple; rank high in the final round (8-5) and your eligible. I’m not sure how many people will get selected, though… likely the top 16-64.

  6. Turbo-Kai

exactly thos two cars I expected….
made a rank within top 500 at one challenge…lol…
the gold times are the best joke ever… nearly 2 seconds below with 1 try on some challenges…
but I don’t wanna complain… I really like these challenges and the cars you win!!!
    Cheers, mates!
    Kai

    1. DuskTrooper

GT Academy isn’t really about getting gold, as it is about getting a fast time. The Gold trophies are pretty much just there to give the player some insight about what the target time is if that player wants to earn those GT Academy ‘rewards’.

    2. Pit Crew

@Swynder Actually did win car, just hasn’t received yet. We get them at end of challenge. Don’t hate on his accomplishment.

  7. RobDoggy05

Created a US account and was able to download GTA 2012 (from South Africa) and i see South Africa, New Zealand, Australia are in the top 10 for average gold ranking, ahead of the US and Japan…. Hmmmmm and we still not included. Im not saying we have the best times because I would be lying if I said we did, I have no clue actualy.. What I am saying is that we DO have potential. So the countries who were NOT included, are doing better than the countries that ARE included….

    1. redgray99

If Australia and a few other countries weren’t able to down load GTA then how do they get in the ranking. If they made a US account then wouldn’t that rank as US?

    2. RobDoggy05

We create a US account, download the game (GTA isnt in our PS store), then log into the normal account (my SA account) and play from that. But apparently we cant compete in the final rounds.

    3. unit Delta

@RobDoggy05, Ineligible countries get more gold medals on average because when people want to make an eligible coutry account just for the Academy, they are more interested in it on average. When GTA is easily accessible and even on the front page of the local psn store, many people download it just out of curiosity and some get bored before golding much.

    4. sanesh21

What’s up RobDoggy05 , I’m from SA too, hit me up.
I really need to do that as well,in order to try GTA out.

  8. tawfiq

I think my Best run out of these 2 rounds was in the Monza (370z)
At the first corner, after overtaking the first guy, I broke, and didn’t know my rear right tire was on the grass x_x (was rolling with 0 TCS, Default is 7) so it started to drift. It would have been fine, but there was cones in the corner ! D: So I pulled the Ebrake, to somehow push the car back wards and controlled it flawlessly ! That made me feel like a True Racer :D

  9. tawfiq

    Jordan, please Edit your post.
Its a GT Academy GTR 32. (you wrote Just Skyline :()
I wasn’t sure which Skyline it was, and wasn’t sure if it was a GT Academy Version.
Yes, I know all cars will have GT Academy Branding over them, but I wasn’t sure :/ Had to check my game :L

    1. DuskTrooper

      ^
      Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II BNR32 (GT Academy) ’94

Is what you mean. “GT Academy GTR 32” Isn’t very specific either…

    2. tawfiq

      DuskTrooper :
B!tch Please, I think its a bit more specific than Jordan. Its like saying London, but me Saying London Bridge. And you saying the exact street.
      Stfu troll.

    3. another_jakhole

“I wasn’t sure which Skyline it was, and wasn’t sure if it was a GT Academy Version.”

You’re smart. This is GT Academy, so we’re obviously getting versions of the cars with GT Academy logos on them.

  10. Quakebass

Man, there must be a bunch of slackers in the U.S. – we’re only averaging about 3-4 gold medals per person… time to step up our game.

    1. Quakebass

It’s the average Gold medals per person in the given country/region. Then there’s the total per country/region.

  11. RB26 2jz

Round 4 was way too easy, I got gold on each one first try and 2+ seconds under par time, round 3 really started to piss me off though, I kept getting .0xx seconds above the gold time on a few of them, otherwise GTA isn’t too hard yet so more free cars for me!

  12. dalmaximus

I think pd were lucky to find Lucas, as for the other two I’m not too sure. I think this academy is about who has the most time available, not the most talent. NEVERTHEless, good luck guys.

    1. Dekropttiv

      (Y)
Totally agree. People like me, who go to school, and, no offense, have a life, have no chance in this competition.

    2. Frame

+1 I have a life that only alows me to play 11hrs a week at best. It would be nice if they took the # of tries it took to get that best time in account.

    3. PRR

Please always keep ind mind that GT Academy is a commercial advertising event, not an event to actually find drivers. So enjoy, but don’t take it too seriously :)

Counting tries would open a cheat hole to practice with one account and perform with another. So it would just make things more complex with little results.

    1. SZRT Ice

Realistically speaking, if you can’t dedicate your life to this, and school, job, family, friends, your “social” life, etc. takes precedence over becoming a true life racer, then you probably don’t deserve to win. I mean, what would happen if you made it to round 8 & won, and were sent a ticket to be flown to GTA HQ? Would your job, social life, and school get in the way then? There are people ready to fly NOW, ready to take that ticket. And they compete with that attitude, with that conviction. It’s not some pass time event or some demo to them, but a shot @ a dream. They may not know any other way, may not have money, the money, a car, sponsors, etc., but they have this. So they take it seriously. And these people are the ones on top of the leaderboards right now.

    2. mef

@ SZRT Ice : Well said. Even if you’re the fastest on the leadeboard, if you’re not willing to sacrifice *a lot* beyond the time you put in the game thus far, you’re not the candidate they will be looking for. I do wonder though what happens if they get a really fast contender who then chooses to pass up and stay with his non-racer life post Dubai 24h

    3. Quakebass

You may have replied to the wrong person… But yes, if I were to win, for one thing, I wouldn’t be eligible… so I wonder how that would work out – if I’d have to send the tickets back, or do nothing with them. And I don’t think I could really hold the responsibility of GT Academy… for now.

  13. Pit Crew

OPINION: If your friends achieved golds using aids i/e Traction Control, and subsequently have a couple tenths of a hundred better time then your score, achieved without using aids, doesnt that give you bragging rights in a way kinda?

OFF TOPIC QUESTION REGARDING Seasonal ASpec BSpec REWARDS for Jordan or Famine: Ive collected all the newer lvl cards from the Spec events not originally in the pre 2.0 spec update. (10 ,11 20 for example) If im counting right all lvl cards for all cars except lvl 24 card (Formula Gran Turismo ,2 Ferrari F1 cars ) have been used. Could this mean new rewards for next round of ASpec BSpec events. Hopeful you can answer this inquiry. Desperate to see evolving ideas for those modes.

    1. DuskTrooper

I don’t think it situation like that really does give you much bragging rights. Even if your friends did use ‘aids’ they still achieved a better time than you.

    2. Pit Crew

well beat alot of their times without aids, and though you chose to be the glass half empty to my jokingly post, im still claiming bragging rights till they do gta trials with no aids

    3. Quakebass

I honestly can’t go faster with the traction control at it’s default setting than I can with it off. So if someone beats my time with driver aids on, (and without track-cutting) they’re DEFINITELY better than me. I don’t know your situation; if you drive better with aids on or off. I leave the ABS at 1 (default) because I don’t have a good wheel… and pressing the “Square” Button ends up in lock-ups all the time. When I get a decent wheel (and brake pedal), I’ll turn off the ABS – I’ve seen how much more quick you stop (when you don’t lock) compared to when it’s on.

  14. TokoTurismo

The GT Academy mini game is boasting an new record! :D GTA is super fun! Especially having leaderboards makes it 10x better + fun. :)

    1. Quakebass

Maybe some basic one’s is in a GT5 update, like friend’s times in the Time & Drift Trials.

  15. researchALLwars

the picture for this article is TITS! great job, Des Foley, it’s the new backround on my phone. : )

    1. Pit Crew

Wish they could use a wheelie pic for a News thread just because, but unfortunately spec 2.0 update squashed that. Curses. Still a fun change of pace I welcome, and 370 GTA car is definitely in line for Drift tuning lol.

  16. MadmuppGT

I’m not getting too high in the rankings, but why am I enjoying this more than I’m enjoying GT5 lately?

    1. BlameAuntJemima

I guess it’s the competition and challenge that you’re facing. That’s what makes it fun for me, competing against everyone that plays makes it more fun for me.

    2. TokoTurismo

And because it looks and feels more complete and perfect then GT5 imo. :) I want GT6 to have that same feeling and enjoyment in it, and definitely have a similar leaderboards like the GTA mini game has.

  17. mickoafna

I passed the yellow car just after the Variante Ascari, so it shouldn’t be a problem for you lldantell.

  18. lldantell

the last test where i have to drive the 370z around monza is pretty easy to get gold but impossible to pass the yellow car

  19. BlameAuntJemima

I made it to 61st place in a challenge in round 3 or 4 and I think 40th in round 1 or 2 when it was released.
So far the challenges have been fun and great and the cars too. I can’t wait for Motegi.

  20. mickoafna

I actually did quite good in round 3 and 4. On average from all 10 challenges, I was around 400-ish. Better than the first 10 challenges :-)

  21. ilcrampo

Gran Turismo 5 is the best car simulator that exists to play 3-everything that has to do with it I love, who does not like it do not buy it, which seems very large to download gt academy who do not download. Nobody forces anyone to buy Gran Turismo 5. sorry for my bad English but I’m from Argentina, greetings to everyone and I look forward to the arrival of Gran Turismo 6 or failing spec 3 …..

  22. azbo1

Anyone else a bit concerened that PD are teaching us to brake and lift off half way round corners when the driving line is on? Try doing that in a racing car:/

    1. dalmaximus

You’re right, it is some very unnatural driving, some of the driving techniques I’m doing is very unnatural. I think kaz loves abs too.

    2. mef

Indeed. Those who set ABS to 9 and trail brake deep into corners should try that at a track day (don’t!)

  23. XXI

*Cracks Nuckles, Opens Ice Cold Redbull*

I’ve never had so much fun chasing .300 of a second. Gotta love leader boards.

    1. MadmuppGT

I know right, its like theyre really fun… would be great to have something like that on all tracks on GT5

    2. TokoTurismo

I agree. We should defintely motivation Kaz and PD to do stuff like this for all tracks. It’s super fun. That’s what GT6 also needs as well. :D Can you imagine in License Tests it has leaderboards? I’ll love that.

  24. dalmaximus

I still think for the last round they (PD) should only allow it to be available for four hours maximum from a certain time.
That way you get the best of someone ability not the person who had the most time to practise.
These precussor rounds are good for whittling down the numbers, and then the final round could be a four hour shoot out.
If contestants aren’t available for those four hours then tough luck.
I will never have a chance of winning and neither will many others as unforutunately they can’t dedicate enough time, but i’m sure four hours would be viable for many, or even two hours.

    Oh well

    1. another_jakhole

It makes sense to have a time limit to qualify your best time. I’m with you on that.

    2. Quakebass

I’m sorry, but I’m with BWX on this one; this is basically training you to be a real racing driver, and I think that limiting your practice time would be counter-productive… The point about training is to get as much time as possible in it to get better and better at it, nit to limit your time and see how well you do in the time frame. And yes, people would just start making new PSN accounts.

    3. dalmaximus

@quakebass, it’s not about training drivers, it’s about finding the most natural and ready talent. they could easily have the comp open for four hours in each country then close it. by all means have these qualifying rounds then have a four hour shoot out, or 2 hours, job done.

    4. Pit Crew

IIts fine the way it s. heaven forbid oneof the top 50 got an 8 hr job. The rounds get harder beyond the GTACADEMY Download, so the weeding out process will develop anyway. no point in making final limited to 4 hrs. Let everyone play. We all 500,000 or more players will still be getting ACADEMY Cars (some may not be happy but maybe content) so no harm no foul.

BRO its about training a talented driver they may want to entrust to drive a Million plus dollar machine of pure speed. Practice counts, bigtime

  25. sgllocal

why only show us leaderboards? why not show eu and others too? not everyone is from usa ya know

  26. Youngun

ill wait a few days, then do my time, placement wont move much then. still in top 1000s for the first lot anyway, got to improve tho

  27. smskeeter23

I too have a lot of fun with this seeing how I stack up in the world ranks. Since I only get an average of maybe 4hrs a week to drive I was ecstatic to have placed in the top 9,000 out of 250,000 on all the events of rounds 1-2. Makes me feel a bit better about my abilities.

I know for a fact even with lots of trying I’ll never get anywhere near the aliens, but that’s ok. Fun to participate for awhile anyway.

  28. GTPGUNFIRE787

Alright this is amazing good luck everyone there some amazing drivers out there lol no where near the top but im learning alot

  29. TomBrady

Am I the only person who absolutely hates the Eifel kart track they’re using for GTA? First it was on one of the leaf tests, now the 370z. I hate it. Worst track I’ve ever seen made with the course creator

    1. TomBrady

I love a lot of creator tracks, I just find this one track to be horrible. It’s awkard, it doesn’t flow, and it’s counter intuitive.

      @Dusk
I think that was a different track. I pretty sure the track I’m talking about was used in the leaf test (either 3 or 4) and another track was used for the silvia. I could be wrong. It’s test 3 in the 370z challenge. Like I said, worst creator track I’ve been on. I usually love them, even the kart tracks (while using cars)

    2. SZRT Ice

Lol, I drifted Gold there. But I understand. Unbanked tracks feel unnatural and unbalanced. It’s unnerving how underwhelmingly unattractive it is to undertake the task of completing an event under such circumstances. So I understand your pain as it’s understandable that people would feel this way, cause under these circumstances it could only be understood.

      Un-
      K, I’m done.

    1. DuskTrooper

I found round 4’s Suzuka Test to be much harder. Yet again I hate Suzuka and I never drive on it some I’m not experienced much with that track.

    2. MadmuppGT

I hear that, it made the GT-R feel heavy and clumsy… Ok ok, I, I made the GT-R feel heavy and clumsy… Jeeeeez

    3. Borna12345

If you played GT4 and aimed at getting all the missions, all of these tests seem easy. Never forget:Mission 34

    1. Maddens Raiders

Yeah that’s weird, that they would have GTR’s since GT Academy is in conjunction w/ Nissan. ¬ ¬

    2. Quakebass

Well, he was whining about the GT-R, not the Nissan part, but still, what did you expect? It was pretty obvious that one of the older GT-R’s would be used, considering their performance range, and their drivability, PLUS, the limited range of Nissans they already had in the game. I’m hoping for a new model; the only likely one I could see for GT Academy is the Juke or Juke R, or maybe a new race-modded GT-R.

    3. Maddens Raiders

^^ yeah I know what he was alluding to QB. I was just pointing out that they go hand in hand, so why the incredulous response lol? “OMG there’s GT-R’s in GTAcademy”…smh

  30. Quakebass

Well, after about a total of 48 hours spent deleting and deciding on what to delete, I’ve FINALLY achieved enough room for GT Academy. I deleted about 8 or 9 Gigs if stuff… goodbye GRID Demo (you’ll be missed), goodbye, Fallout 3, (which I didn’t play), goodbye, ancient Christmas album that my mom forced me to install for the holidays, and goodbye, those other great 250+ songs I had to delete, you will be sorely missed. Well, most of you, anyways. The weird thing is, I achieved enough space to download GT Academy, and still had about 250MB, but then when I went to install it, it claimed to have too little space… So then I deleted about 50-ish more songs, Netflix, (which I didn’t use…) and then realized that my friend had forced me to play Fallout 3, so I deleted it, along with his save file… *Evil laugh*. It’s installing now. I wonder how much room the installation actually takes up; if it’s another 3 GB, that’ll be a whopping SIX FRIKIN GIGABYTE PAIN IN MY LEFT TOE. I’m expecting it to be worth it, though…

    1. another_jakhole

What do you mean Instatllion size? I highly doubt it’s more than 100mb if I think I know what you mean. There’s a small update that’s no more than 70 MB. It should be less than that.

    2. TomBrady

A lot of people don’t know about this but since I learned the har way, I will share.

Anytime you download a game from the PSN store, to download it, you obviously will need enough space for the download. So for GT Academy, you need at least 3000mb to download.

Now what many people don’t seem to know, is to install it, you will need another 3000mb free on your hard drive after downloading it. So in total, to download and install GT academy, you need 6000mb of free space. Anytime you’re trying to download a game from PSN, you’re going to need double the download size in order to download AND install it.

HOWEVER, the extra space you need for install, is not actually used. It’s not like disc based games where it has to install data on your hard drive, for whatever reason (I still don’t know the answer to why it’s like this), you need at least the size of the download to install a game on your hard drive.

So to lay it out simply, to download and install GT Academy, although the download is only 3000mb, you need 6000mb to also install it, but after installation, it will have only taken up the download size. This goes for any game from PSN. I don’t know why, this is just how it is.

My PS3 has been ultra low on space for about a year, and I learned this a long time ago. So anytime I want a game from PSN, I always make sure I have double the download size available on my HDD before I get the game.

    3. Quakebass

After downloading, it puts the file in the “game” section, at which point, you have to install it. (The installation process goes about 10-20 times faster than the download, and you can’t cancel or pause it, and it warns you not to turn off your system during this time). I had 250MB left after downloading (before downloading I had about 3.6GB), and it claimed that I “didn’t have sufficient hard drive space” for the install, even though I had already downloaded it. (I always have to install anything that I’ve downloaded from the PS Store… I believe everybody does.) I deleted a few more things, got up to 450 MB, but it still wouldn’t install. I finally just went to my game data, and realized that I still had FallOut 3 installed, so I deleted it, giving me about 4.2GB. It installed then. It’s now at 94% installed. THEN I’ll need to get the update, which I SHOULD have enough room for now.

    4. Quakebass

^^Sorry, it was in reply to another_jakhole – your comment didn’t show up until after I posted. I wonder why this is so? They should warn as to how much is required on your hard drive, not how big the file is… Either way, I would’ve needed to delete FallOut 3 to get it, no biggie. I DO need a new hard drive though, my laptop is down to 3.47 GB (HOLY CRAP), and I do a bunch of video editing, AND I’ll be getting the Adobe Creative Suite CS5.5… I’ll use the hard drive on both (and I know the PS3 requires a certain format of hard drive in order to install data on it).

    5. DuskTrooper

TomBrady, if does that because after the file installs, the PS3 automatically deletes the downloaded file and keeps only the files that were installed during the installation process.

    6. DuskTrooper

^ Unless I’m misreading, he doesn’t say exactly why “after the installation, it will have only taken up the download size”.

    7. Quakebass

No, when he says: “HOWEVER, the extra space you need for install, is not actually used.” I hate making constant short sentence replies, it makes me feel like a spammer…

    8. Quakebass

@Foxiol: I’m actually hoping to get a 500GB – 1TB drive; though I may inherit my dad’s 300GB drive. I’m unsure if his has the correct formatting, though; but it’s a free hard drive, I won’t turn that down.

    9. RobDoggy05

“goodbye GRID Demo (you’ll be missed)” Got the game on my PC, one of the best racing games ever made!
(Very Arcade like yes I know)
But still so much fun to play

    10. researchALLwars

aw man, not the GRID demo!! My GOD, what if we had 30 cars on track being driven by aggressive racing driver A.I. like GRID, in gt5? *wakes up* Hey, I just passed out there… what happened?

    11. Quakebass

Arcade games are still great fun. Grid is one of the few Sim/Arcade cross-overs that actually works WELL. It all really boils down to driving physics; the physics can be arcade-y, but in a good way. That’s what I miss from classic PS1 and 2 games, like FlatOut and BurnOut. But, gotta love simulators too; they teach you SO much more.

  31. Dowlin39

golded all of them just now. still not putting alot of effort into them unless i get particularly bored. My real effort will come once there are trials that are full laps of tracks.

  32. BWX

I usually get in the 3000 to 1500 range.. but I don’t try that hard. I wonder what would happen if I did?

    1. another_jakhole

I’m pretty sure, about 99% sure, that was this guy’s first comment in months, in the comments section at least, that didn’t include any negativity. I wonder if he was reading that thread I made.

    2. GTPGUNFIRE787

You would get to 500 if you tried i normaly try and i get to 300 for a couple hours before some else beats it but try it you never know

    3. BWX

Oh saying we need A-Spec is ”negativity”? In what bass-ackward universe?

We do need some more single player content to run the DLC.. it’s BS there hasn’t been an off-line A-Spec career update that uses all the DLC. That isn’t ”negativity”, that’s real-world constructive criticism. If you don’t like it, don’t read it, but I don’t need you and Toko and all the other apologist fanboys to cry every time anyone criticizes PD and Kaz for all the bad decisions they make and lack of content in GT5.

Mind your own business and move along.

  33. GT5 Level 41

Finally, my GT5 friends will have something new to do rather than play king of the hill and knock me off the #1 spot every time I get it.

  34. CarBastard

Well, I’m not close to being a top-simracer or anything (Mind you, I’m not even close to being a top GT5 racer) but making it into the top 30000 in almost all of the tests of first and second rounds means a lot to me, specially considering that 500000 people play it.

GT Academy is not only a way of finding the absolutely best drivers out there for a contest, it’s also a way of measuring how good you’re in my opinion.

    1. RockRoadKid

Excellent point. I have no delusions of driving professionally for Nissan, but placing in the top 10% still feels pretty good. I haven’t even begun to enjoy GT Academy as much as I expect I will have when it’s all said and done.

    2. CarBastard

Yeah, I mean, I know I’m far from being the best (four tenths on some tests!) but I feel proud of my times. GT Academy has encouraged me to practice even more on GT5 and on simracing in general because I’ve realized I’m not as hopeless as I thought, specially considering I don’t practice seriously and didn’t took more than half an hour per test. Maybe I’ll get back to GTPs WRS being more mature and patient (Mind you, once an attempt at the WRS costed me a TV! Yeah…not proud of that. However, I did score a division podium once.) than when I gave up on it.

Thanks GT Academy and good luck to the regional winners in the real world tracks!

    3. TomBrady

Yea it makes me feel good being able to get into the top 1000. I know a lot of people who are faster than me in some leagues but if I can get top 1000 out of 500000, that means I’m faster than 99.8% of the people who have participated. Badass. There was another GT academy thing, can’t remember which one but 200,000 people participated, and I was 684th. Although I really have to try to get this far up, just being able to get close with little effort is cool. Still can’t close in on the top ranked guys. Actually they’re not guys, they’re aliens, and I’m not

    4. Quakebass

It’s great realizing you can get a good rank with little effort… In Wipeout HD after you finish a race it’ll say “press (square button) to see global records” (in terms of race time), and I’ll be #1… on several races. I didn’t know if it was because I was on “novice” difficulty, and it was putting me on the “novice” leaderboard, if the times weren’t actually online player, but just CPU/Dev. times placed in the game, or what. I wouldn’t really have to try at all… but it still gave me a good feeling. I had fun going for top scores and times in MotorStorm: Pacific Rift’s “Speed Weekend DLC”. Can’t wait to see how I stack up in GT Academy, once I have time to play it.

    5. TomBrady

      @Quake
Yea the same thing happens in Grid. When I first got it, I remember it saying “world record broken” or something after I set a time, and I was thinking, what? no way. It’s just the in game “world records”. The online leaderboards were actually very different story. I was far behind but who cares, what’s the point at being number 1 in an arcade racer lol

    6. MyFavoriteGame

I miss GRID …. imo, the most important aspect of any video game is “fun-factor”, and damn, did GRID have that. PD should sell their engine to CM. I would love to see what they come up with.

    7. Quakebass

^Nah, all we need is to have PD get some more time with their own engine; THEN see what THEY come up with. I don’t know if Grid would be the same; they already have a great engine for racing and damage. I’d like them to leave it as it is. Unless you mean an entirely new game…

  35. HuskyGT

Yes! I’m still 70 in round 4-4 after an hour or so! I thought that was going to be my worst result since I really hate Suzuka and that’s probably my least favorite turn.

    1. Quakebass

Likely people have FINALLY gotten over the fact that GT Academy is the reason for the lack of DLC. The only complaint I have is the fact that PD/Kaz didn’t announce this earlier…

    2. montecarlo87

It’s really too bad too. There are some of us that can’t compete in this because we don’t have compatible internet due to living in a large rural area. The only way I’ve even been able to get the last set of DL’s and DLC is to make a short run to the library. We rely on DLC to keep us interested. Let’s hope we get at least some kind of news about a new DLC for June, lets say around the same time of the 24H Lemans leading to some new LMP cars. R18, Deltawing etc.

    3. HuskyGT

Damn it PD! we don’t care about GT Academy! We need DLC or stuff for free that doesn’t start with the word Nissan and ends in GTR! More tracks, More high end super cars with fancy names, I hate these stupid seasonals… Forza 4 is better, blah, blah, blah!!!!

…There…Someone had to do it. The comment section is nothing without its usual whining.

Now let’s wait for TokoTurismo to talk beautiful things about PD and how much he loves GT5.

    4. another_jakhole

hahaha it’s not so much about “how much he loves GT5”, but more about the “beautiful things” about PD/GT5.

    5. TomBrady

I’m all for GT5, I think it’s the best, but there’s nothing wrong with being pissed and criticizing PD for this crap. Most people just throw hate around like a bunch of ginnygoats, so I get why you guys are saying this stuff, but really you can’t possibly think this is a reasonable excuse for skipping the DLC?

GT academy is cool and all but it literally doesn’t really affect 99.9% of the people who play GT5. Sure, a lot of people will participate, but only I tiny amount of them will win. DLC effects everybody, and it’s something everybody wants.

Think about it, DLC’s have sold probably more than triple the amount of people that have participated in GTA, and GTA is free, you don’t even need GT5, yet the DLC still sold at least double.

They really didn’t need to make a standalone game either. Nobody who doesn’t have GT5 is gonna get anywhere near the top ranks. And if they wanted a demo, they should’ve released a proper demo before GT5 was released.

I’m not bashing GT5, but PD has their heads up their asses. It’s time they realized the fans want DLC, not another contest, and especially not a contest that friggin delays the DLC we all want

    6. Quakebass

^ It’s really all about marketing. With GT Academy, it basically advertises not only the game, but the fact that it’s so realistic that you could become a real racing driver by playing it. By having a free standalone game, it will reach out to more people, and persuade people to buy the full game, and possibly it’s DLC. I think that’s why it’s called the “GT Academy 2012 DEMO”, but I may be wrong. I’m expecting DLC and an Update either during or after GT Academy, especially now, since Twin Ring Motegi was leaked/announced, and there appears to be new features, like audio adjustments mid-race. It’d be a great time, too, since all of these non-GT players may have purchased GT5 after GT Academy, and will then want the DLC, greatly increasing it’s sales.

Basically, to summarize what I just said, it’s all about advertising and making future money.

    7. TomBrady

      @Quake
I hear what you’re saying, but there’s really no way it will make them more money than the DLC will.

And where did you hear about in race audio adjustments? Do you mean like being able to shut off music in races? or even better, change what music tracks you’re playing? That would be great. I love the custom music in wipeout because you can do things like that, and I will also love it for when I join an online lobby, and forget to turn off the music if the lobby has microphones enabled (you can’t use custom tracks if mic’s are enabled, I hate that stupid song with the little kids singing. it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me)

    8. HuskyGT

      @TomBrady

You know, I kind of agree with Quake in which this is more of a marketing tool. But I have to agree as well with you in which I don’t think that this will significantly push sales as much as if they release more DLC for people who currently own the game.

      Also,

      “…baby i dont know
just why i love you so
      maybe its just the way
that god made me this day
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      honey i am you
      and i feel for you
it wont be too long till
      that like us one again
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      just wait
      just wait
      just wait
      just wait
      eh
      oh eh
      eh
      oh eh
      baby i dont know
just why i love you so
      maybe its just the way
that god made me this day
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh
      eh-oh-eh-oh-eh…”

It makes me want to shoot myself in the foot…

    9. HuskyGT

I know it sounds wierd, but I just wanted to annoy everyone here with that stupid song…

      …PD, please change the lobby/race settings music…

    10. Quakebass

      @TomBrady:
I’ve gathered that you can now adjust the sound effect volume and music volume during a race; You can only do this in GT5 in the options menu at the main menu. This is what I’v heard, I still haven’t been able to play the academy yet. I’ve heard some say that the Nordschleife was edited as well, but then some people have claimed that it feels different due to a different time of day.

And as for the marketing “strategy”, I think its really just trying to get more people to play and purchase GT5, and THEN DLC. Obviously, anyone who downloaded GT Academy could download DLC, as long as they’ve got money. Let’s say GT5 gains 10,000 new users from GT Academy; lat’s say all 10,000 of them purchase a NEW copy of GT5, and buy $10 (USD) worth of DLC each. I’m assuming a new copy of GT5 is $30 (USD). 10,000 X 40 = $400,000, (USD) a hefty lump of cash if you ask me. (There’d likely be more than 10,000 people purchasing GT5 and it’s DLC, but 10,000 may be accurate for the amount that got new copies of the game). I’m not saying that this will work or it’s a good idea necessarily, I’m merely saying that it’s likely what PD believes or is trying to make from GT Academy. And it also strengthens the partnership with Nissan; PD’s basically giving Nissan free race or test drivers every year. GT Academy is BIG this year, but I wish we could’ve gotten an announcement of this earlier on so we could’ve expected a delay of DLC to make room for the up-sized GT Academy. And I’m sorry that I’ve said that about 1,000 times now… I feel like I say to much sometimes…

    11. RobDoggy05

I always wonder to myself, imagine if the PD team was split up 33% American, 33% European and 33% Asian.

The Europeans would do the car choosing, legals, branding, organising, research.

The Asians (The current team) would do the physics engine of the game, track mapping.

And the Americans can do the final graphic rendering, damage physics, menu screen/ music, and then add anything they want (with permission of the other two teams, even call Google to do something, I donno lol)

Could you imagine????????? Would be destined for GREATNESS!!!!!!!

    12. Quakebass

^That doesn’t really make sense… it doesn’t matter where or how you have your company set up, you’re still going to get the same productivity from the workforce, unless you’re talking about hiring a greater workforce. All PD needs to do is buy licenses and select more cars from different areas if you want more car variety. But more importantly, they need to HIRE MORE PEOPLE – you can see how much gets done with Forza, and T10’s got 3 times more employees. And they wouldn’t need “permission” from other teams… the entire project would be managed by Kaz…

    1. Quakebass

Then you obviously haven’t checked the GT Academy website; it has a count-down to the next rounds.

  36. crcn11

I was ranked 43, like… my best result ever but I highly doubt I’m still in the top 1,000 anymore :(

    1. HuskyGT

LOL! Me too! I got 42 in the “maintaining stability” test at the ring. I’m probably down to 5000th place right now :(

    2. HuskyGT

Yep, confirmed. I’m down to 783.

Oh well, it wa fun to see only two digits in my ranking for a while.

    1. Quakebass

Actually, the comment stating “Boom! First Post :)” would be the third post. And, speaking for just about every user on the internet, WE DON’T CARE!
